The last time we were here was the week before Ohio went into quarantine. Still a pretty good ramen place, even if they don't have my favorite pork broth. Meshikou is one of my favorite places for bowl of ramen. Their mala veggy is my favorite ramen. It's a you can feel it in your ears warmth. You know, the nose runs, lips tingle, and mouth feels just a little bit numb. Love it. Their sichuan tare makes the broth something that really stays with you. Meshikou's menu is written in a way that clearly explains dishes. Additionally, you are able to add ingredients. So if the bowl you are eyeing does not come with the toppings you really want, you can add them. I always choose counter service. Especially when it's in a space where the kitchen is open. A huge downside is that this place auto straws drinks. So your best bet is to ask nicely, before you're brought a glass of cucumber water that you don't need one. A plus is that the cucumber water pairs heckin' nicely with the heat of the mala veggy ramen. The hot tea is nice as is the offering of sake. There are tables that can easily sit 6 people, but I'd say anything larger may be challenging. Overall: Medium sized restaurant but I liked the decor. It was clean and very hip and seemed to be busy with lots of people. I had just heard about this place a month ago from a few friends and had to try it out. We came around 5:30 ish on Saturday and it was about empty. Only two other customers in there. As we sat, it got busier closer to 6 and at about 6:15 there was a wait. The place is small! Much smaller than Fukuryu Ramen. Not a ton of tables and just a handful of seats at the bar. It's dimly lit with very cool looking light fixtures, and wooden tables. They gave us waters with cucumber in it. Yum! Refreshing! My older sister got the Karaage Ramen, which had a side of fried chicken. It came with a sauce that was also very delicious. My other sister got the Shoyu Paitan Ramen. She got it with pork tenderloin. I got the Shoyu Chintan Ramen with pork tenderloin as well. They all have a soft boiled egg, scallions, mushrooms, bamboo. My sisters' ramen had fish cakes while I had a seasonal green. The broths were different. Mine was much darker while they had a lighter looking one. It was all very good! Much healthier than other ramens I've had. The broth wasn't salty. The noodles tasted homemade. Much different than the thicker noodles I got at Fukuryu, but they are both good in their own ways. Wouldn't mind coming back again! Seeing how popular this place is, it's worth a try! After multiple outings at Fukuryu and Menya ramen, I finally got the chance today to try out the ramen at Meshikou. It was overall an excellent meal-- but I can't quite jump out and label this the best ramen in town like many of the top reviews say. So first of all, I do think that they have the best noodles out of the ramen shops in Columbus. It's cooked just right, with a good firmness to it. I'd say Menya's is second place, while Fukuryu's noodle is easily their weakest link. Next comes the broth, and this is where things get a bit complicated. Traditionally, different ramen broth flavors (soy/shoyu, miso, shio, tonkotsu, etc.) all have different base stocks. So while Fukuryu and Menya use a chicken stock base for their soy/shoyu ramen, they switch to a pork stock for their miso ramen. At Meshikou, all of their broths, even the miso, is based on chicken stock. Chicken stock based broths are lighter and smoother. Pork stock based broths are more robust and flavorful. So if you prefer a lighter and smoother broth anyways, then you can't go wrong at Meshikou. If you prefer a more flavorful broth like me, it's a bit disappointing here. Ideally, they'd use different base stocks on the different broths to cater to both preferences like Fukuryu and Menya does... but that isn't really possible at Meshikou. Looking at toppings next, I love that Meshikou gives you the choice of choosing fatty pork belly vs lean pork tenderloin as your protein. Traditionally, ramen comes with fatty pork belly, but I know many Americans don't like fatty cuts of meat, so having the option of switching to tenderloin is great. They also use a blowtorch to grill the pork belly before putting it on your ramen bowl, so that's an added touch that I really appreciate. On the other hand, many of the the traditional ramen toppers like nori (dried seaweed), menma (pickled bamboo shoots), and red pickled ginger were absent here, so that was a bummer for me. And finally, one of the other reviewers recently pointed out that they're pricey. Indeed, it appears Meshikou's miso ramen ($12) is slightly more expensive than the miso ramen at Fukuryu ($10.90) and Menya ($10.75). Not a big difference, but worth noting. I definitely paid $12 for my ramen today dining in, but their delivery menu on Postmates says the same spicy miso ramen is $11. I wonder if they have different prices for dining in vs delivery? All in all, if you prefer lighter chicken based broth for your ramen, Meshikou is likely your top choice in Columbus. Personally, I enjoyed everything about them except for their lack of a more robust broth. I'd probably end up picking Meshikou when I want a shoyu ramen (which is lighter to begin with) and pick either Menya or Fukuryu when I want a more robust broth (miso or tonkotsu). read more

Okay, I think this is a classic example of needing to try a few different things until you hit the item that rocks your world. The spicy mala ramen with braised tofu is that exact item for me. It ticks every box. I'm pretty picky about my ramen, and the spicy mala is truly unlike any ramen I've ever had. I tried their spicy miso the last time I came, and really didn't care for it; but THIS spicy mala is absolutely divine. Now, onto the chashu buns. They were...okay. My problem is actually the chashu itself. At some other places, the chashu is usually the star; here, it feels like an afterthought. It just doesn't have any flavor (except a few bites had that unavoidable pork funk, if you know what I'm talking about), and the fat didn't feel/taste fully rendered. I got the chashu on the ramen I tried last time, and didn't care for it then, either (which is why I ordered the braised tofu with my ramen this time). It was definitely the right choice, and the texture of the braised tofu (and how it soaked up the broth) was incredible. I was hoping the chashu inside the chashu buns would be better, maybe because the barbecue sauce would save it, but it was still just...meh, to me. The staff is also always very friendly and on point. TL;DR: Overall, the spicy mala ramen is simply spectacular. I'll definitely come back to this place again and again for it. This is my favorite place to get ramen! I love the various options you can choose from and the vibe of the place. I wish there were more seating and a bigger space, but it makes for an intimate meal. There's plenty of parking, no WiFi, bathrooms in the back, and only 3 big tables that hold up to 8 people. If you come on a busy day, you may have to wait awhile. There are other shops surrounding the area, you could check out. Staff is usually friendly and helpful. Each table is provided a spice seasoning, salt, and pepper. On a cold night, my friend and I decided to get ramen. It was a great decision. We went on a Wednesday around 6:20 pm. Came here with my sister on a Tuesday night around 7:30. It was impressively busy. We only waited about 8 minutes. We were sat at the bar. The waitress, Bethany was extremely nice and attentive. She immediately asked if we wanted something to drink and handed us waters in cute little mason jars with two slices of cucumber each. She also regularly and briefly checked on us. We ordered the salt and pepper calamari, the fireball Paitan ramen, and the Meshikou black ramen. We got a choice of pork tenderloin or pork belly with the ramen and we both chose the belly. Food came out QUICKLY! The calamari was extremely tasty and stir fried with jalapeños, red peppers, onions, and garlic. The accompanying vegetables were all perfectly soft while the calamari remained crunchy. The ramens were both absolutely delicious, some of the best I've had in Columbus. The bowls are huge which allows for a lot of noodles to be put inside (a problem I've seen in other restaurants where they don't have enough noodles) and the ramen wasn't too salty (another big problem I've seen!!!)! It was perfectly seasoned and had the this meaty, Smokey broth flavor. The egg was perfectly soft boiled, as was the pork belly. They were so soft and easy to bite into while retaining their shapes. The mushrooms and bamboo added texture and soaked up all the broth. This place is certainly one of the best ramen I've had in Columbus. The price is generally reasonable and the atmosphere is nice. This place has the best ramen I've had, hands down. I ordered the Meshikou black, which comes in a shio tare (salt based seasoning as opposed to soy sauce or miso) broth and a lot of toppings: pork belly or tenderloin; egg; fish cake; mushroom; bamboo; and black garlic oil (hence the name). Because I'm picky, I subbed corn for the mushroom and bamboo, for no charge. There's also an option to add Asian greens, but it would have cost more. The broth is rich and flavorful without being too heavy, salty, or greasy. The noodles had the perfect firm texture and there was a good amount of them in the bowl. There was also a lot of pork tenderloin, which was as flavorful and juicy as pork belly I've gotten at other places for ramen, and of course a lot meatier/less fat. The corn provided a nice sweet contrast to the savory flavors. My only minor complaint is that the garlic oil was a tad overpowering. Next time (and trust me, there will be a next time), I'll go with the regular shio broth sans garlic oil. We also ordered chicken karaage (Japanese fried chicken) as an appetizer and it was amazing. They used chicken thigh meat, making it extremely juicy and tender. The breading was crispy, but not too greasy. It came with a citrus dipping sauce to go with it, which cut through the grease and complemented the chicken well. Service was great - the waiter was informative, attentive, and quick. Love this place!! Now the people are starting to come back out dining, I've noticed that some of the restaurants are used to enjoy have changed a lot of things. Sometimes the food isn't as consistent or the service isn't at the level that I was used to before. I get it. Everyone is dealing with supply chain shortages for ingredients and they're short staffed. However I have to say Meshikou has been one of those places that have been very consistent. The same friendly faces are there to greet you every single time I go. And I have gone over 10 times, Introducing different friends and family to this authentic Ramen house. My favorite used to be their Paitan, But recently that's changed to their spicy mala. I've also discovered that I love their tofu and makes for a healthier option to the pork belly. The broth is very deep in flavor and the noodles have a nice texture and chew. The serving size is generous and if you opt for extra noodles (smart tip), you can often wrap up your leftover broth and have lunch for the next day. The only things I would change is there Karaage chicken is made of dark meat only and sometimes has some Cartlidge or excess fat. My son seems to love that though so I guess it's individual preference. They offer alcoholic beverages but nothing too fancy. It's a small restaurant in a strip mall so it's not anything fancy and you may have an issue if you come with a party of four or more as far as wait times. And also the clear curtains that they're currently using because of Covid is a little off putting aesthetically but I understand and appreciate the effort to keep everyone safe. They've resolved it by hanging plastic clear curtains around every table, and plastic separator between the guests and kitchen. All employees wear masks and the plastic curtains are cleaned with the tables after each guest leaves. The food is fantastic as always! I love the Black Meshikou since I'm partial to garlic, and their pork belly is always very moist. Straight noodles don't have egg yolk in them, so if you're weird like me and have an allergy to egg yolk, get the straight noodles! Wow, this is very, very good ramen. The interior has a cool, funky, and modern feeling. It's on the small side, though, and it can definitely crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. There is a counter to sit at as well as a couple of high tables plus about maybe five normal-height tables that can fit about four people. The table right by the door is to be avoided (if possible) as it gets cold with the door always opening as people come and go. Most of the staff are very friendly and helpful. I've maybe had one server that was something of a dud. For starters, the chicken karage is very good. This is not your normal fried chicken; it's a wonderful lightly crispy fried chicken. There seem to be chunks of both white and dark meat chicken in the karage. It comes with a lightly spicy and is served in a little fryer basket. There are several different types of ramen to choose from with different broths and either wavy or straight noodles. You can switch noodle types on any of the ramens, though. The fireball paitan ramen is a favorite. A wonderful, rich base with a chunk of a spicy garlic paste that really makes the dish. You can get pork tenderloin or belly with each ramen. The tenderloin is a less fatty and (I think) yummier choice. Having been here many times the food is consistently good and the service friendly. Definitely try it! read more

Not sure how I've gone so long without trying Meshikou. Stopped in with the fam for a late lunch after appointments. The space is quaint and dimly lit, just a few tables and a counter top. They still have plastic dividers in place for Covid precautions. We scanned a QR code for the menu. Being that it was my first time and that I am by no means a Ramen connoisseur, I really appreciated the detailed descriptions of everything. We started with crab tacos and the KFC. Both were amazingly delicious. The shell from the crab tacos combined with the creamy imitation crab and the sauce with corn was a flavor explosion I didn't know I needed in my life. The KFC was amazing too, I loved the flavor of the sauce, the chicken was juicy and the breading was spot on. For ramen I went with the fireball miso without mushrooms (I don't mess with fungi) and pork tenderloin for my protein. I loved every single bite. The garlic seasoning provided just the right amount of umami. After having this bowl of ramen I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go back to the orange pack from the grocery store. I'll definitely be back to expand my horizons. For anyone who's on the fence about trying this out, just go for it, you'll love it read more

This spot is amazing! It's a pretty small space but the food is amazing! Our server Bethanny was very knowledgeable on the whole menu and answered all of our questions. Our table ended up getting multiple appetizers and sharing them and then we also got some ramen! I tried the bacon wrapped enoki and the mango habanero wings and I also tried the BBQ Chashu Bun. Which was all very delicious *chefs kisses I will definitely eat coming back and trying more. read more
