My husband and I recently tried Mesa for the first time and we were so impressed. We got two small plates to share and one large plate each - I got the crab curry and he got the shrimp and grits. Everything was superb. The dishes were unique and flavorful, and the portion sizes were extremely generous. We also got drinks which we really enjoyed. I had mentioned to our server that we were celebrating my husband's birthday and she brought us a free dessert which is always a nice gesture and was delicious. We will definitely be back. read more

Mesa exceeded expectations. Lovely in every way. Well worth the drive. I'll start with the atmosphere which is classy yet laid back. Beautifully decorated, comfortable seating and had garden seating out front. Small parking lot but plenty of street parking around. We had a reservation and arrived early. No problem seating us early. We ordered drinks: the mule and strawberry sour. I'm a sucker for sake cocktails and the sour was great. Perfect blend of the sweet/sour. Mule was great too. Incredibly helpful and attentive waiter recommended the wings for a starter. These had a delicious crust and sauce on them with the right amount of heat. Their take on shrimp and grits and the jackfruit biryani were what we ordered for entrees. So delicious! And filling. Ordered the pistachio tart to take home. Had it later and it was incredible! To top it off we got to meet the chef/co-owner who was as kind as could be. My daughter booked this reservation for an early Father's Day dinner. I usually know or heard of restaurant's name in Jax but this one I'm unfamiliar with. Very impressed upon our entry to the restaurant. I was envisioning typical Indian restaurant but I thought this one has a different vibe. Much classier and upscale. Great looking decors and murals. I ordered the salmon curry with basmati rice. My wife ordered the bass fish entree while my two daughters ordered the chicken curry and the burger. I tried all of them and the flavors were excellent. Desserts were also awesome. The highlight of the night is when the owner introduced herself to my family. I thought it was very nice that she took the time to talk to us and told her story about the restaurant's origin and her cooking passion. I actually wish I could give it a 4.5 star rating, but the service was excellent so I rounded up versus down. They are just serving their Tasting Menu which consist of 5 courses for $55, but will soon start serving food off their other menu as well. Dining is by reservation only. Reservations are made via email. Hopefully, this is updated to a more efficient online reservation system eventually. Best Indian food in Jacksonville. The prix fixe menu is absolutely worth the price if you've got the time and appetite, but Mesa is also a great takeout option. They have a great website, and the food is ready usually within 20 minutes. Everything I've had here I've enjoyed, with some standouts being the pav bhaji, the chicken curry (ask for it spicy), the lamb burger, and the shrimp and "grits". The only dud we've ever had was some cold and under seasoned fries one time. The service is fantastic, and will make even a novice with Indian food feel comfortable. Finally made the trek over to Mesa for dinner and it did not disappoint. Service was amicable as soon as we walked in the door, with the host, servers, and all other employees being extremely kind and attentive the whole night. Our group started with the hummus and wings, both of which were delicious. The mango lassi wasn't overly sweet and was a large enough portion to last the entire meal! When we ordered our mains, our waiter was very clear in explaining the spice levels and suggested accompanying side dishes to ensure an enjoyable eating experience. We were so lucky to meet Saji tonight! She's the owner of the two year old Ortega area restaurant, Mesa. Saji left her home in Kerala, a state on India's southern tropical coast, at 12 years old and moved to Syracuse NY. While living in Syracuse she assumed that the rest of the US must look like...well, Syracuse. After her and her husband's first trip to Florida, they knew they had to live here! It reminded them of southern India. This restaurant is her 25 year in-the-making dream come true! Everything we ate and drank was truly outstanding. Don't Mesa with my Indian cuisine unless you can do it right! I am more of an Indian buffet kind of girl, so I was hesitant to try this place at first. However, I truly enjoyed the food, ambiance, and drinks! FYI they offer cocktails, just know that all drinks are wine based. They offer beer too. This is the type of place you'd want to go for an experience. They offer a tasting menu but don't let that fool you, the portion sizes for each course are the perfect amount. You definitely get more than just a taste. The upscale twist on the Indian spiced flavors I've been accustomed to, did not disappoint. My wife and I arrived on a Saturday evening with no reservation. Parking was full. There's only like 6 spots for this restaurant but we found a spot across the street past the fire station. The wait was about 5 minutes. I asked if I could grab a drink from the bar while we waited but the host mentioned we needed a reservation to sit at the bar...? The menu was very limited. They offered a tasting for $65 a person but we opted to share the chicken curry - medium and an appetizer since we ate not long before trying this place out. Think they mentioned food here is south Indian with a little fusion. In my opinion the Indian restaurants in the Southside area are better. Service was excellent and they did a great job with the decor. Just thought the menu and food could have been better. Indian cuisine options on the westside is very limited. Our group of 7 people (thankfully we had made reservations in advance!) had a thoroughly enjoyable gastronomic experience as well as great service. BTW, the menu is seasonal and some of the dishes I mention here may not be on the menu when the seasons (and the menu) change. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees - every one of the items hit the spot . Personally, my favorite was the Pav Bhaji (three of us ordered it and all of us enjoyed it). Tip - Order extra bread or the Malabar paratha as a side as they provide with a lot of Bhaji. Others in our group ordered an assortment of chicken dishes and the unanimous opinion was that the food was tasty, and had the right amount of spices and "heat". Tip - Their medium is about right for most dishes. We were seated outside, and in Jax in Spring, the setting was perfect. The owner's mother spent a good bit of time talking with us and providing us the origin stories of the dishes we consumed. Make sure you get to chat with her - you will not be disappointed. They had lived in India for several years and were familiar with the southern Indian state of Kerala from which Mesa's cuisine originates. So we tried the 5 course dinner last night. Let me just say what a wonderful combination of flavors and spices. Started off with a papaya salad - the cool papaya paired with a delightful balsamic dressing, goat cheese and pomegranate seeds and chilis. Light and bright. Next Moong dosa (similar to a crepe) with a bright cilantro chutney which I think I could put on so many things. The Dosa had an earthiness was beautifully crisp on the outside. Complemented by a small lentil soup with just the right amount of spice and heat. 3rd course PAV Bhaji - it's a typical street food - has a combination of veggies and is to be eaten on the bun. The bun was so light and airy but beautifully crispée on the inside. The attention to these small details says allot. In addition to the staffs attention to timing the dishes. I should mention the restaurant was packed and the staff was very attentive. 4th Lamb chops with gun powder potatoes. It also came with a small side salad of arugula and goat cheese perfectly dressed. 3 Lamb chops beautifully cooked except one small one. Seasoning lovely. Chutney again we'll paired. Dessert was a passion fruit semifreddo topped with crushed pistachio. Light dessert after a filling dinner - with just a touch of sweetness. Parking is a touch tricky bc set in a mostly residential area. They have room in front for a few cars and there is a lot across from them for business which isn't open in evenings, as well as the side street. Owner was in the kitchen and also came out to chat with guests and check in on things. Staff supports each other so the first experience isn't impacted. Very friendly. read more

I've always loved Indian food, so I was pleasantly surprised by this modern Indian place. It seems small on the outside but inside is spacious and nicely decorated. There is outdoor seating too which we will try when the weather is cooler. Our server explained the menu well and checked on us often. The food is a modern take on Indian cuisine and was delicious! The samosa chaat was flavorful . I had the meen pollichathu which is sea bass cooked in a banana leaf with tamarind and coconut milk sauce and basmati rice. It was a unique flavor and I enjoyed every bite. The bread was buttery and flaky and was great for dipping in the sauce. The chef/owner stopped by our table and chatted with us. We got the Chicken Curry and Lamb Burger and both were incredible! We also tried the malabar parotta and sweet potato samosas - yum! Best meal I've had since I've been living in Jax! I can't speak for "authentic" Indian food as I've never been to India, but I can speak for the flavor of food. I had the shrimp n grits, yes, normally a Cajun dish but their spin on it made it made it probably the best meal I've had in my life. My friend had the salmon, and she Absolutely loved it. My friends and I had a wonderful girls night out here and tried several options from their spring menu. The restaurant is beautifully designed inside and out. They have a seasonally changing menu and also a tasting menu too. We loved the wings, samosas and the breads that we tried. The passionfruit dessert had a strong rose flavor and the seeds in it were similar to chia seeds but smaller. I enjoyed the nimbu pani which was like a limeade. Our waitress was excellent at recommending dishes and drinks on the menu. This is my new favorite restaurant in Jax and I know food (my wife is a chef!). The food is superb at Mesa, the flavors sublime, which is hard with the strong spices and curries inherent in Indian cuisine. Last night I had the halibut dish and it was amazing, flaky, well seasoned...and I never ever order fish in a typical restaurant. Then again, this is no ordinary restaurant. Try it, you won't be disapointed. BTW, did I say that the service is impeccable and the chef is so nice. She came by the table to introduce the dishes and personally made sure that everything was done to perfection. The "spice bomb" is perfect and is some kind of amazing home concoction, if you need a bit more kick with your food. BTW, I've been to this restaurant 4 times in the last 3 months. She gave me background if the owner and I was able to meet the owner. She's very nice. They care about people and their health. They do not cook with seed oils. They use avocado oil. They also use cardamom with their food which helps with the digestive system. The owner does want you eating their food and feeling bloated. The food is absolutely amazing. They don't have a liquor license but make great drinks with wine. On my first visit I had the Mesa Chicken Curry. Best Chicken curry I've had. 2nd visit I had the kerala shrimps and grits we also had their wings for starters, wow, wow, wow. 5 stars!!! 3rd times a charm. I had Salmon Molee. 5 plus stars. The salmon was excellent. The ambience is cultural but modern. Outside seating is available. I just love the customer services. Most of them remembered us.
