A culinary feat of generational magnitude. A dream come true that can only be rivaled by meeting Jeb Bush, my idol. Had dinner here on a Tuesday night. Walking in, the hostess greeted me and walked me to the dining area. The decor was very pretty and the mural was beautiful. The restaurant is small-ish and great for dates and friend-dates because you can actually talk and hear each other! It was the first day of their spring menu and I liked that they didn't have too many items on the menu so it wasn't overwhelming. I ordered two drinks: first was the guava sangria (yum!) and the second was a glass of gewürztraminer (light and sweet wine). My friend and I just ordered a few apps as our dinner. We had the uttapam, leek flatbread and the Malabar parotta with a side of red curry to dip in. Each dish was unique and flavorful. I especially loved the parotta as it was flakey and warm. Paired very well with the curry. We asked the curry to be "Indian spicy (spiciest level)" but it really didn't end up being that spicy so they brought out the "spice bomb" paste that took it up a level or two. I really appreciated the owner coming by and saying hello and making sure everything came out great (& spicy)! Service was very nice and attentive and they cleared out our plates in a timely manner. Whenever a group of us 8 agree on a date where everyone is available, Mesa doesn't have availability so my wife and I decided to go ourselves. We cannot wait any longer and it's a lot easier to make a reservation for a party of 2. We ordered so much and walked out of there so full. APPS - The Mesa wings were crispy good and sweet. It reminded me of teriyaki for its sweetness. Also ordered the Malabar Parotta. It's as good as roti with a side of Panang Curry as dipping sauce. MAINS - I had the Lamb Burger. It's not your typical burger. It's juicy and flavorful. Even the fries that came with it was good. I had a taste of my wife's shrimp and grits and that alone will fill you up. This place promises to raise the bar for Indian food in the area. While I did find a nice Indian restaurant on the northern highway, within the city I expect that they're correct. This is a residential area with a fire station next door and no other restaurants to speak of, but it is quite a nice space with indoor seating, an outdoor fenced patio, and a bar. This place is not standard Indian fare and offers some traditional items from Kerala, a coastal region on the south of India with a language that even my Indian friends tell me is hard to learn. It also offers some more modern fusion cuisine. While intrigued by the Malayali options, I wasn't hungry enough for some of the coconut-heavy dishes and so instead landed on one of the fusion items. My burger and fries was a chickpea burger; it had a lot of whole chickpeas and was not the same texture of flavor you'd get from falafel, but it was certainly delicious, especially when you consider the spiced fries on the side. It had a mix of toppings a bit like a vada pav or something, but looked like an American burger. Adding a chai on the side was a good decision though it took a while for it to cool down. While my travels may make it a while before I can consider a repeat visit, I would recommend it to anyone seeking a little bit more than the basic Indian restaurant experience. And if you're new to the cuisine, their servers are very interactive and happy to introduce you to it. If you have dietary restrictions, this is a cuisine that has vegan and gluten-free options. I just tried this restaurant tonight and I'm still in a food coma from it! We've been wanting to try this restaurant for ages now since multiple friends have raved about it. I'm now screaming at myself for not coming here sooner! This has got to be one of the best, if not the best restaurant here in Jacksonville. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by multiple friendly faces. As we sat down, owner/chef Saji came and talked to us about her passion and menu. We could tell how passionate she is about her Indian cuisine and she explained to us that she uses only the best cooking oils like coconut oil, ghee, and palm oil. It was very lovely chatting with her and we felt right at home! The atmosphere was lovely and I loved the lighting and the modern décor. The restaurant was also very clean and when I went to use the bathroom, it not only was also clean but smelled nice! The restaurant is on the fancier side but we didn't feel that we had to dress up or anything. We were treated as valued guests. We had David as our waiter and he was such a delight and joy! He was super attentive and made sure we had water at all times. He also provided suggestions on what to eat on the menu and every item he suggested was a hit! David made our first time here very memorable and went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. In fact, all of the staff were super friendly and provided top notch service! We had the following: Appetizers: Mesa wings: 10/10 - these wings were juicy, plump, and bursting with flavor. They are double fried so they were also very crispy! They give you 6 big wings for your order and as soon as I had the first bite, it was game over. I knew the entire menu was going to be amazing. The Manchurian sauce (with green onions and sesame) on the wings were tangy, sweet, and just a tiny bit of kick at the end. We all finished the wings and exclaimed that these were some of the best wings we've ever had in our lives. Beef puff pastry: 10/10 - This came with two huge puff pastries filled to the brim with beef brisket and potatoes and came with a cilantro crème fraiche. Oh my goodness! It was like biting into the flakiest pastry ever! All of the flavors punched me in the face (in the best way ever) and I was shocked at how good this was. The pastry dipped in the sauce was the chef's kiss and it sent me to heaven. Masala fries: 10/10 - YOU NEED TO GET THESE! The fries were fully seasoned and the masala spice added a pleasant salty and spicy surprise! It came with their house "mesa" aioli and you need to dip your fries in it! The sauce ties everything together! Entrees: Chicken curry with basmati rice: 10/10 - My friend and I had the same entrée with mines being Indian hot and hers mild in spice level. What I appreciate about the spice level is that while my dish was spicy, it wasn't the obnoxious, overly spicy, where you can't taste the fragrance and essence of the dish itself. Our chicken curry was spiced to perfection, the chicken was tender, and the rice was cooked right. The rice was very fragrant and fluffy. We could also taste the fresh coconut milk and curry leaf! I've had many curries in my lifetime (Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai) and this one is definitely in the top two. The portion sizes were just right and both of us had Togo boxes. We also ordered malabar parotta (mix between naan and roti) and it was like biting it the flakiest, layered croissant in the world. Definitely a must have with your entrees! Salmon molee with basmati rice: 10/10 - My husband had this and he said it's one of the best seafood dishes he's ever had in his life. It had coconut milk and turmeric flavors and while I'm not a fan of salmon, I tasted it. The salmon was super fresh and did not have any fishiness to it and the sauce was the star. I think I loved this dish more than mines! It was very delectable and the aroma from the turmeric was very inviting. We were in awe how special this dish was. Definitely would get this 100% again. Desserts: Orange cake: 10/10 - It had chocolate chantilly and jalebi bark. This dish was very unique and I've never tasted any dessert like this before. It was sweet, salty, and citrusy all together. As soon as I took a bite, I knew this dessert would be the one for me. The bark had pistachio nuts and it tied the dessert all together. You taste the sweet citrus from the orange and then the bitter taste of the dark chocolate kicks in, and it ends with a sweet/salty note from the pistachios. This dessert will take you places to where you've never been! Chikoo posset: 8.5/10- it has rava ladoo (coconut, raisin, and sugar) crumble and some type of rice pudding consistency. The pudding's flavor reminded me of spiced milk (cinnamon maybe?). I loved the flavors and the crumble but bits of the crumble was little on the harder side. Nonetheless, it was very flavorful! We are so lucky to have Mesa modern Indian cuisine here in Jax. Who knew such a refined, sophisticated Indian restaurant could be found nowhere but in Jax. Everything on the menu is good (trust me, I've tried everything except for the burger) so you can't go wrong. But one of my fave items is sometimes on or off the menu: stuffed dosa. But if you don't see it, just ask chef Saji nicely, she might make it for you. It's tissue thin, light, crispy and stuffed with flavorful potatoes and spices. BTW, more than likely you will see Saji coming your table to say hi and flash her beautiful bright smile that will make you feel warm and so appreciated. Did I mention the food is off the chart? And so are their cocktails, mixed by talented mixologists. And the ingredients are clean and of premium quality. Chef Saji even make her own ghee. Our long awaited dinner at Mesa finally happened and overall, we were very pleased with the experience! We had an early reservation which allowed us to take advantage of the happy hour specials and to beat the dinner rush. The single server did an amazing job with managing all of his responsibilities and remaining attentive to our table. We started with a few appetizers - sweet potato chaat and pumpkin samosas. So I love samosa chaat but it's admittedly a bit messy. I really liked the presentation of the sweet potato chaat with crispy chips for dipping. The sweet potato, yogurt, tamarind, and cilantro all worked really well together. The samosas were surprisingly delicious. They were served on top of cranberry chutney. Our two appetizers together felt a little like an early Thanksgiving! Our entrees took a little while to arrive from the kitchen but we didn't mind as we munched on their perfectly cooked fries with the delightful and spicy masala seasoning. We got two orders of the salmon based on our waiter's suggestion and one order of chicken curry. Of the two dishes, the salmon was definitely the way to go. The curry that accompanied the salmon was much more flavorful than the chicken one. The portion sizes of both were OK. The only issue we had with the salmon was that it was overcooked and therefore dry. The curry helped with this. Our impression was that the concept was good and service was excellent. Came in with no reservations on a Saturday night, we only had to wait a couple of minutes and they kindly accommodated us outside, which was great. We shared the mesa chicken curry and the pav bhaji which were both highly recommended by both the waiter and the owner of the restaurant which kindly dropped by to go over the menu. I wanted to try the naan nachos but they had ran out of it, however it seemed like they still had of it left and brought a small plate for us to try it. So for service and attention this place gets a solid 10! We went to Mesa Jax and WOW was it incredible! There were three of us that went, and we each got a different appetizer and entree. Service was great, our waiter was just as excited about the food as we were, and after we ate, the owner came over to see how our experience was. The ambiance of the restaurant was a pretty, eclectic vibe with murals and different things on the walls. Appetizers: hamachi chaat, lamb ribs, and mesa wings - all three appetizers were to die for. The hamachi chaat had a delicious sauce over it and was on a bed of little crispy rice puffs. The lamb ribs had a glaze that had a little bit of a sweeter undertone to it. The wings were huge and had a mango kashmiri sauce. We were impressed. The entrees from the summer menu that we chose were the chicken curry, the goan crab curry, and I got the salmon molee. I absolutely loved my salmon. I got mine "medium" spice, knowing I can handle hot, but I wanted to see what their spice levels were like. It wasn't super spicy, and I'll definitely go with hot next time. The chicken curry was a nice mild curry flavor and the chicken was tender. The goan crab curry was outstanding and there was SO much crab! Each of the entrees had a slightly different taste to the sauces, but all were made with coconut milk - we also got the malabar parotta which is like a roti bread and was perfect to dip in the sauce. I got the guava sangria cocktail which was so fresh and light! I'm glad I got it. They have all wine based cocktails and saki. Overall 10/10 and absolutely need to go back! We've visited Mesa several times in the last year and a half and finally got around to writing a review. I couldn't recommend Mesa enough if you're looking for something new and authentic in Jacksonville. This time we stopped by Mesa for dinner and we were not disappointed. Even though our reservation was for indoor dining, the host was kind enough to seat us in the outdoor patio - it was perfect weather to sit in the patio! Our dinner kicked off with Mesa Wings and Corn Pakoda appetizers. The wings are unlike anything I've had before. Perfect crunch and amazing flavor anchored by the mango Kashmiri glaze. A must get. The Corn Pakoda was also good; however, it was a lot more breaded for my personal taste. Regardless, the sauce was great and it was a sizable portion to share. Our main entrees were Brinjal Biryani and the Kerala Friend Chicken sandwhich. Both were amazing for different reasons. The Brinjal was a delicious vegetarian dish full of flavor and also a large serving size. The Fried Chicken sandwhich is my personal go to meal when I am not feeling adventurous and as always, it did not disappoint! One of the best brunches in town! From beverage to entrees this is a nice level up from the typical brunch around town. The chicory coffee is smooth and perfectly balanced and the same for the Chai. The French toast is beyond words. Great crisp on the outside while soft and flavorful interior.
