Fado and guitar

Mesa de Frades was a recommendation from a tour guide and it did not disappoint. We made a reservation and unfortunately was pending- make sure your reservation is successful otherwise you may not get in. Fortunately for us a party of 6 became a party of 3 and us 3 girls got in! The food was amazing they give you appetizer, main course, and dessert! Multiple Fado performances with multiple voices from 21:30-2:00. Also unlimited beverages including espresso and alcohol. I got the steak which was so good a friend of mine got the pork ribs which were also amazing. All of this included for 65 euro. Definitely recommend!

We came here for the second time and I can honestly say I'm deeply disappointed with service and the lack of food choices. We pay 60€ per person and we got one of two dishes. We didn't get refills that we were supposed to get before the show. The waiters acted like they were doing us a favor every time we asked something. One time I asked ice and we never got it. It's sad... I used to love this place but now it is on my black list. Don't come here.

Beautiful azulejos line the walls.

This beautiful, ancient former chapel is lined with gorgeous tiles appropriate to the holy experience you will enjoy there. Mesa de Frades was the best of all the Fado houses I experienced in Lisboa. No, the food wasn't amazing. Only pretty good. No, the wine isn't great, but it flows freely and they'll bring you carafe after carafe. No, each and every singer wasn't amazing. But the camradere...simply wonderful. The range of fadistas was delightful - from teens, getting their feet wet and learning to control their instrument, to well aged singers in their sixties and seventies, making up for what they had lost vocally with what they had gained in life experience. And in the middle, incredibly talented singers in the prime of their career. Unlike most of the other Fado houses, it wasn't about the tourists. Instead, there are only so many tables and you're sitting in the midst of the singers. During the breaks between sets, you can share a glass of wine with them out front. We got to hang out with the remarkable Pedro Moutinho! I was told by many (and confirmed at the Museo de Fado) that all of the greatest fadistas performed here at some point in their careers, including the late, great Amalia Rodrigues. A Spanish friend suggested getting here at 9:30, to dine and secure a good table, and to not worry when the singers showed up very late because the singing would go well into the night. He was so right. As we finished our meal, they closed the doors, moved a few tables around and the singing began. At 2am, they barred the doors and brought out more carafes of wine for all who wanted to stay. The wine poured and the music flowed until 4am. One of the most magical nights of music I've had anywhere in the world!

Pastries de Bacalhau - the crust was not brown enough. May be longer time. The stuffing was flavorful but it's more the cod taste than the flavored mash potatoes which I prefer. I actually prefer the other local restaurant I tried the night before better. Caldo Verde - The potatoe part of the soup is great. Perfect viscosity but the flavor is not. It wasn't salty enough but more importantly is the flavor of the veggies and the spicy sausage they supposed to use that makes the soup taste different. Grilled giant pawns - The flavor of the prawns is not as intense as expected and hope to be. The squid ink pasta also lacked of flavor. That's disappointing. With the prawns, they should at least use the prawn shell to make sauce for the pastas. The pasta was tasteless, didn't even use enough garlic and olive oil to flavor it up. Seafood rice - Another disappointment. They used fish, small mussels and little bit of shrimp pieces along with some bigger whole shrimps and mussels. However, the rice was lack of the true seafood flavor that made from shell fish. They also added cilantro which overwhelmed the whatever left of seafood flavor. The lemonade was not a sweet lemonade but sour. Fyi. It's not fair we just went to another restaurant in the neighborhood and everything was so much better but people should know.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. FOOD - 4 stars...succulent poultry with a unique spicy kick AMBIANCE - 4 stars...like an old-fashioned dining room in a Portuguese home SERVICE - 4.5 stars...they move quickly and courteously TOTAL - 4 stars...a Lisbon institution worth checking out RELATED - Exploring Lisbon? The chicken is pretty tasteless besides some of the skins with the marinated rub which then became too salty. I've had much much better piri piri chicken before so I was sorely disappointed.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live. You will not be disappointed. Promise.

It was not crowded at all on a Friday night, and I was able to strike up a conversation with fellow diners and actually hear myself talk. That is rare these days. I was surprised they were offering Happy Hour pricing around 7 PM, so I quickly took advantage of a pitcher of sangria, which was delicious and incredibly fresh. I started with the chorizo, which you cook yourself right at the table. For my main course I ordered the steak with eggs, and it was excellent. To finish, I had the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was also outstanding. Overall, a truly wonderful hidden gem in Lisbon. I cannot wait to return.
