When in Lisbon, and Fado(Fa-thoo) show IS A MUST! Mexicans love their Banda and Mariachi, Hawaiians have their Pa'ina, Spain has their Flamenco, and Portugal has Fado. It is a huge part of the Portuguese culture and started out right here in Lisbon in the Alfama District. Originally, we planned to go back to Estaca Zero Fado Restaurant (where we first went 8 years ago) but unfortunately they were closed for the evening. Casa de Linhares was just down the street and so we went there and inquired if they had openings for the evening. Luckily for us, they did! On top of that, they had a Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition on the door! We killed time until our reservation at 8:30pm and we were seated promptly. The Fado show is 15 euros per person and also have a variety of food items for dinner. They offer a tasting menu as well as a la carte, so we got a few things and a great bottle of Vinho Verde. Food was staggered throughout the evening with five different fado performances. Keep in mind that this is a 3 hour evening start to finish so plan accordingly. I did a ton of research and asking around for which of the places in Lisbon to go. This was in some of the travel publications as a recommendation and we couldn't have been more satisfied with our choice. It's a beautiful setting at the foot of Alfama. The location is slightly hard to find as you have to walk up an alley from the main street. The staff are incredibly friendly and happy. Often food in a show+dinner situation can be meh, but we food the food quite tasty and the show was fantastic! Throughout the night there were multiple singers...what I loved is they don't really have a time to stop, they keep singing as long as customers want to stay. We had a very early flight the next day so left after 11pm (3 different sessions already), but they were likely to go another 60-90 minutes depending on how late customers wanted to stay. I love that! The singers were talented and so beautiful to hear in this atmosphere in Lisbon. The manager is also a singer and she had the most beautiful voice. Incredibly a friend of the singers was in the audience and they had him join the singing, so we got an impromptu session. Truly an incredible experience and well worth the expense. Overall pretty reasonable considering the experience. We loved it! read more

Ah, fado. The "Portuguese blues" as a tuk-tuk driver told us. Grown from the writings of Portuguese sailors who missed their loved ones, those writings were put to music and thus fado was born. You have to experience a fado show, and if you choose do so I recommend Casa de Linhares. Make your reservation on their site. The venue is a little tucked away as you have to walk up an alley from the closest main street but the signage will help. Once you are checked in and seated you peruse the menu. Our server was friendly but very businesslike which I understand as they are trying to get orders down before the show starts you do need to make your decisions in a timely manner. You order drinks, starters, and entrees prior to the show. Dessert towards the end if you wish.The night is meant to be slowly savored. Singing doesn't start until after the appetizers and drinks were out. Each singer, all of whom were AWESOME, had a set of about 4 songs which led to breaks where the next course would be served. I went on a limb, or should I say tongue, and ordered cod tongue as my meal. These were breaded meaty morsels. The texture was similar to scallops. It came with a bread pudding and I enjoyed it! The rest of my group went for the seared tuna dish and a beef pasta. Each dish was prepared well and all cleaned up their plates. I ordered a bottle of vinho verde which was rich and refreshing pairing well with our seafood. We actually passed on dessert as we had multiple sweets earlier lol. While the food was splendid, the highlight was the show. There were five performances, four singers and one instrumental set. Each singer had a voice that easily captured the ear especially with the acoustics of the small dining room. The last singer, Vania, was actually the manager and she was so sweet, coming by the tables between each set. We asked her the names of the artists and she took the time to write things down so we could find them on Spotify. Our favorite was Fabia, whose very first song to me really captured a state of sadness and longing. I obviously had no clue what the words were but her voice and expressions led me down that road emotionally. That takes talent. If I were to come back to Lisbon this is a definite return for me and I wholeheartedly suggest you make this a part of your own visit! read more

I have been here twice. Once in 2019 and again in July 2023. Both times the music and the food were exceptional. The staff are attentive. The ambiance and acoustics suit the music perfectly and the singers that perform here are top notch. This place is on the expensive side. Prix Fixe for two people and one bottle of wine ran us 250 euro. you will be there for quite some time so make sure you are prepared to be there the entire evening. read more

We were fortunate to find Casa de Linhares restaurant in Lisbon. The ambiance was warm and friendly. The food was delicious, served in a timely manner, but not rushed. There was live music of a guitar and mandolin accompanying the Fado singers while we dined. Casa de Linhares was a highlight of our visit to Lisbon. The servers were very attentive, the foods were scrumptious (breads, spreads, soup of the night, & seafood rice), and of course, the Fado singers and musicians were excellent! It was a perfect location to showcase their voice and very cozy inside. It was pricey but worth it. The seafood rice was a bit too much for us (2ppl) that we didn't have room for dessert (not a problem though). Fantastic meal and Fado music! Though we had some menu and wine challenges, our waitress and restaurant staff helped immensely. In addition, one of our family members has a gluten allergy and required a gluten free dinner. I started with the garlic shrimp, which with a great blend of spices including garlic, coriander and sweet chili, had a superb flavor and light sauce. It made for a tasty beginning. Then I asked if the seafood rice could be made for one instead of two, as directed on the menu. The restaurant was extremely accommodating and said that it wouldn't be a problem. The seafood rice came in a large bowl with saffron rice, a rich and delicious sauce with mussels, clams, shrimp and lobster. Tasty and very filling!!! To complete the meal, the moist chocolate cake with berries and a berry sorbet. It was most delicious and had a wonderful flavor and was a great way to finish off a delightful meal. The Fado music was just another part which added to the overall meal. This was the first time we had heard Fado music and it was delightful. The musicians and the singers sang with such passion that you couldn't help but be drawn into the beautiful music. Though I do not speak or understand Portuguese, it did not matter as you felt every word and sound. It was great that about every 30 minutes we would hear more Fado music. Highly recommend this fine restaurant and Fado venue. The decor adds to the music and presentation and makes it a true find. Make sure you allow for plenty of time. This is not a meal you want to rush through. Enjoy the various courses and music that goes along with it. read more

Extremely disappointed! The restaurant looks beautiful, but the service and food was below average. Fined with 2 other people, all 3 of our entrees came out cold. Even if they were hot dishes they probably wouldn't have tasted good. Servers were not attentive, the only employee who cared was the Sommelier (probably because we bought a 50€ bottle of wine). Fado was nice, but interrupts your dinner which is most likely the reason for cold plates. Too expensive to serve that garbage. read more

This is a fabulous venue for a meal and some Faro performances It is set in a room that survived the earthquake. The evening is cared for by a group of people committed to the traditions music of Portugal. Their performance is stunning! But be prepared - this is not a venue for someone on a limited financial and/or time budget. First the cost. Compared to a meal 1/2 km away down the street, the prices were double. The wine, while very good is also expensive. We dealt with this by sharing an appetizer, ordering the "cheap" house wine, having the veggie mains and sharing a desert. All the food was very good. Note that you also pay 15 cover on top of the meal. Secondly, whether it is to encourage more spending or their commitment to the show, they work hard to keep you there for the full show. So don't think of popping in for an hour or so. So overall it is a fantastic unique cultural evening with great service in historic surroundings. Yes, there are better places to eat and cheaper places to hear Fado music, but this venue provides a special experience. read more

I see there have been no reviews for a while and I would like to add an update. Just finished a most memorable evening at Casa de Linhares. True, this is not an inexpensive evening, but if you know that going in, it can be a truly magical evening (and if you need to be somewhat price conscious, there are still plenty of delicious options on offer). While in Lisbon, I brought my Mother for a Fado show for (U. S. ) Mother's Day. The singing was truly magical. The setting with vaulted ceilings completely enhanced every singer's natural abilities-- truly could have listened all night. We each ordered the tasting menu thinking we could taste the dishes the restaurant was most proud of and we were not disappointed at all. Being only our second day in town, we feel like we got a great variety of Portuguese dishes with this tasting menu and at such high quality( never did we feel like we were eating "tourist" food.). Some reviews mention food getting cold while they waited for the singers. All I can say is they must have worked out this issue as each dish was served in perfect time & temperature during our meal. My Mother & I each have very different tastes in wine and our server could not have been more gracious and accommodating. He offered up sells, but left it to us to pick and choose with no pressure and quite a bit of low key charm with the end result being that we were both pleased with all of our eventual selections. Finally, at the end of the evening they called a taxi for us and sent an employee with us (to the main street ) to make sure we were safely on our way home. They offered this at the beginning of the evening which allowed us the freedom to have a carefree evening of our choosing rather than worry about the logistics of a foreign country on what was meant to be a special night. It is hard to say enough good things about Casa de Linhares. If you are looking for a quality Fado experience, this has it all-- excellent service (from front of house to table service), high quality food and most importantly, amazing Fado music. Great meal, amazing music! The food was excellent, best we've had in Lisbon. In particular the duck pie and the seafood rice and the pork cheeks were perfect and paired well with local wines recommended by the somm. The Fado started around 9. 3 songs then a break then 3 more with a different singer etc. we left after 1 but it was still going on. The guy playing the Portuguese guitar was amazing as was the classic guitar player. The room, which is built like a high chambered wine cave, has amazing acoustics and resonance with the singers' voices. We we lucky enough to be front row, which was immersive without being overly loud. read more

We went to Casa de Linhares on our last night in Lisbon with the hopes of a good last meal in Portugal and to listen to Fado music. The Fado did not disappoint...all acts were superb and were well worth the 15€ "tax" that was added onto our meals. The front of the house manager is even one of the singers. For food, I only had a few starters but the garlic shrimp were divine! Cooked and flavoured to perfection. Be warned though that the bread and spreads that are given in the beginning are not free, and if you eat it, they will charge 5€ per person - not worth it! It does get warm in there, so best to dress light or bring a fan. All in all, a delightful experience and despite a few misses, the fado totally makes up for it! read more

The restaurant opens at 8pm and not a minute earlier which was our first impression of the restaurant. We ordered asparagus, garlic shrimp, octopus and seafood rice for two. The food was pretty salty, but decent enough. The worst part of our experience was that the food took an hour to come out and when we asked politely how much longer, the waitress ignored our question and replied "it's not my fault." We didn't say that it was her fault, but only wanted to know how much longer and why everyone's food came out before ours even though we were first there and first to place the order. Also, if you didn't know they charge $5 per person for bread in the beginning. The music was fantastic though. Overall, we have mixed feelings about the place. read more
