After going back in forth on a few I had narrowed down, I decided to try out Mermaid nails and became a loyal customer after my first visit. Apparently this used to be a nail shop under different owners so they are relatively new, but, not the location. Why 5-stars? It's simple, the shop is pristine and they are professionals who you can easily tell take pride in their work. I hate hate hate going to nail salons and feeling rushed and literally watching the nail techs do a half-a** job painting half my nail while missing the other half bc they're too lazy or rushing too much. Celebrating my friends birthday. She made the appointment and I decided to do a pedicure despite the short days, cold nights, I wore sandals and capris, for a Pedicure. I pretended it was summer time. I pretended it wasn't going to get cold and dark at 5:00 pm. All for a pedicure. It was worth it. The Covid protocols were in place. Limited capacity, temperature checks, masks, gloves and excellent service. My poor feet were in need of TLC. I decided on gel because I think we're going on lockdown soon. This spot will become a regular situation as they are very clear about pricing too. I know that some customers complain about nail salons jacking up prices unnecessarily, so their clear pricing was appreciated. Went for a pedicure and got to add not one but TWO trips to the hospital. After an extra vigorous clipping, three days later I was in Urgent Care for an ingrown toenail and infection. Haven't had my nails done for many many years. Decided I wanted to try gel nails out. I came here and they did a great job. My nails however are really thin so it didn't stay on. Came back and tried the dip. Sure loved that and they looked amazing but came off pitiful my nails too - but lasted about 12 days. So I went back to acrylics. Best location to get your nails done in the Monterey area I've been going to this salon on and off since it first opened up business. Never has the quality ever gone down. This salon retains professionalism through and through. It's clean, quiet, and your nails come out looking perfect. Techs are extremely gentle and professional as well. Other salons in Marina are good for a walk-in, but for good reason - they are not as great at THIS spot. I never walk out of here wishing I hadn't gone in. I leave with the best possible nail service. If I HAD to nitpick - this place is appointment only. Which I personally love because this means they can focus on their clients. What I don't like is when someone walks in to make an appointment, which then impedes on my time slot. It just feels counterproductive. I'm always so skeptical when trying a new nail tech and nervous if I'm going to like it or not I think every girl gets like that. After reading reviews after reviews I came across this one, & I've read nothing but positive things so I went ahead made a appointment. Walking in I liked how they had me sanitize my hands! lol that was a green flag. 2. I notice it wasn't packed how other nail salons are, I was the only one plus my nail tech & another employee witch was kinda nice & relaxing! Went to Mermaids Nails for approximately two years, not too long after they opened and during the midst of Covid. Since they were new to the community decided to give them a try. Initially, they were wonderful - Tu the owner was very respectful and polite in both text messaging and greetings. Their quality of work was thorough (although my nails always chipped after one week - dip powder), the shop was clean, and the atmosphere relaxing and quiet. Fast forward two years - I received a blunt response from the owner to "NOT COME BACK", due to my need to reschedule a few appointments due to personal reasons, which I communicated to the owners. I always gave the salon a minimum of one week's notice prior to my request to reschedule. NOT ONCE DID THE SALON GIVE ME ADVANCE NOTICE THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OR WARNINGS IN THE SALON REGARDING RESCHEDULING RULES AND REGULATIONS. It was an unexpected surprise and did not see it coming based on my interactions with the salon. In summary, I have been getting my nails done for close to 30 years. I have never experienced this type of behavior before. If I knew this was a problem, I would have worked with the salon. The owner was very negligent in communicating any perceived issues. I certainly hope that other customers are not treated in this manner. Thank you. read more

In these uncertain times they were prepared with hand sanitizer partitions where needed and scheduled people out so that there wasn't more then a few people in the salon at a time. Felt very safe and my nails came out great! So happy that I tried them. My nails were a wreck from trying to do home manicures and I even tried to do Dip powder at home and my nails paid the price.
