Lasagna is my go to Italian restaurant dish more than any other pasta creation. Read the mixed Yelp reviews for Mercato, seemed that it could offer a good dining experience and it is close to the hotel. The bread and olive oil was enjoyable. Service was friendly and attentive. The lasagna was unfortunately terrible. I've never had soggy pasta in lasagna previously. It tasted water logged and there was minimal firmness. I don't know what happened but half way through I thought maybe I should just abandon that dish and order something else. It was that bad. Squishy pasta, yuck. My assumption is they didn't bake the lasagna, rather they boiled (over cooked) the flat noodles and assembled it. That's my feedback. Big miss. Won't return. read more

Extremely disappointed doesn't begin to cover it -- the fact that this place holds a Michelin star is genuinely baffling. On the bright side, our group of 4 was seated quickly (which, in hindsight, should have been a warning sign). From there, it went downhill fast. We waited 30 minutes after being seated before anyone came to take our drink or appetizer order. The bread arrived dry and stale, and one of our cocktails came garnished with a lime that still had a produce sticker on it -- see the photo. As for the food, "mediocre" is the most generous word I can offer. The ravioli was the standout of the four dishes we ordered, which isn't saying much. I'd strongly advise skipping this one. read more

We asked the guy at the hotel front desk for a good restaurant nearby and he pointed us there without hesitation. It has a nice overall ambiance, and we're greeted pleasantly at the door. They asked if we had reservations and I said no which was not a problem. They escorted us to the back room which was completely empty and sat us is a corner area. That was where the pleasant stopped. The table was a corner bench seat and was way too high for the little table. They asked about drinks and we ordered. It was at least 10 mins before they came back to even get us water (no drinks yet). Finally got drinks and the waitress read off the specials. We said we wanted to order a Caprese salad and beef carpaccio. She asked about entrees. We said we wanted to start with those and see how we felt. She made a comment about "it's easier for me if you order entrees now" and walked off. Came back like 5 mins later and asked if we wanted prosciutto with the salad. We agreed. Asked if we wanted olives. We declined. I should have put 2 and 2 together and realize they were tacking into the bill. The food finally came out and was underwhelming. Very little flavor for the Caprese salad. Carpaccio was better, but I've also had a LOT better. No one came to check on us except the busboy. However, a table came in next to us (5) and they were all over them. Better service, continually checking in, etc. Overall, subpar food, non-existent service. Cannot recommend. read more

Mercato was a mixed experience. We had a larger group reservation, but the seating setup did not really fit the group comfortably. It seemed to assume people would squeeze together on a bench, and the space already felt cramped. Fortunately, the table next to us opened up later, which gave everyone a little more breathing room. The food was also hit or miss. The meatball side was good, but the gnocchi bolognese was disappointing. It was skimpy on the sauce and did not really come together the way I hoped. Overall, there were some good parts, but between the cramped seating and the uneven food, it was just an okay experience. read more

The ambiance here is absolutely stellar! You first walk in and think it's just a few tables but it tucks backwards to a lovely back seating area. It is still small and quaint but that added to the vibe. The food overall was a bit boring and small portions TBH. I did appreciate that they serve the bread with lentils and oil which was unique. The Rucola salad was good but nothing spectacular and the Orecchiette was a big let down. Tiny portion. Zero sauce (which I expected light sauce but literally none) and absolutely no hints of anchovies. It basically tasted like pasta lightly coated in olive oil with a few pieces of broccoli rabe. Given the quality of the savory foods we opted to find dessert elsewhere. Service was also nonexistent. There were not many diners and after the food was served we were never checked on, water was never refilled and we had to grab their attention to be able to pay the bill and leave. read more

Salad was really nice, as were the olives to start. I had the eggplant rigatoni- which was fine, kind of forgettable. Things I did not like: no complimentary bread, no refills, and the space is extremely tight in the front. Good food and service - came here for lunch for the holidays with a group. They can get quite busy here so best to know what you want especially with a big group. Menu: plenty of options to select from - there is something for everyone. The homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta was nice and light but filling given we were all going to eat again in a couple of hours. Everyone enjoyed their dishes - including the fettucine with wild mushrooms, homemade, spaghetti, gnocchi, and grilled salmon. portions may look small but they are filling. Nice space for groups in the back and glad they were able to accommodate same day reservation for lunch. Will definitely come back to try other dishes.. read more

Wow. In a city of every type of cuisine and at any hour, Mercato stands out. Ambiance was cozy and warm. Staff was attentive and friendly. The food was the star, from our apps of carpaccio and grilled octopus, to our four pasta choices; and finally the tiramisu and fried risotto balls. This place deserves their accolades. Simple yet complex flavors presented in each item and each course. Try it for yourself! read more

By far the most dissatisfied Italian restaurant I've been to. Went here based on the reviews and the assumption that we would be satisfied. First and foremost the appetizer plates were very dirty and so were the cocktail glasses. We were glad not to have ordered appetizers. Main course, we had pasta and it was the quickest we've gotten our pasta ~less than 5 minutes, as if it was premade. Our waiter also didn't share the specials for the day (but did for the table next to us) nor did he check up on us (1 time towards the end only!), instead the busboy did!Flabbergasted! I ordered the Linguine AI Frutti DI MARE. It had mussels,Calamari,shrimp,and clams, with a spicy tomato sauce. I started off with real Italian bread, unlike the other bread I was served at other restaurants . The bread was delicious, however the capers and oil had no real flavor. The pasta with fish was very good. It was loaded with fish and very tasty. I got extra bread to mop up the sauce at the end. The sauce had a nice fish flavor and was not spicy . Because of its location, this is a solid choice before seeing a show. Service was friendly and attentive. I got the sense chef is not afraid to experiment. In general, I really enjoyed the flavors. We shared deep-fried artichokes, carpaccio, and fave e cicoria (fava beans with chicory). I would not have ordered fava beans and chicory, but it was well worth the experience. For my main course, I had one of the daily specials, a lamb ragu with pasta. Also, I had a cocktail and a glass of wine. We were a group of three and my share was about $90 including tax and tip. Overall, this was a good value considering price, service, and quality. I would easily return. read more

What a quaint restaurant in the Garment District. We had a lunch reservation prior to a Broadway matinee. The interior has a very old European vibe. Service was very professional and attentive. I did think it was odd that they wouldn't serve us the bread until our fourth guest arrived. Al the food was delicious and ingredients fresh. The serving sizes were appropriate for the price point. Four of us ate for $125 before tip, 4 entrees, 1 wine and 1 coffee. We arrived at our reservation time and were qseated at a table by the front window. It was fun watching all the people pass by. We were the first in the restaurant at lunch time but as we sat there were several large parties arrived. There was a plaque on the wall stating it was Michelin rated. Mercator is an easy walk to the Broadway theaters and worth a visit. read more

Based off the hangings on the wall this place has won some Michelin stars and what I had definitely didn't let down. It looks small looking in from outside but there is seating in the back. The service was friendly and even though we didn't have a reservation on the Saturday they made room for us. The server we had was very knowledgeable and took her time to go over daily specials. The food was so delicious we came here twice on the weekend trip. The first night I decided to order the Spezzatino di Manzo al Primitivo. It was delicious! So juicy and the gravy with it just made the whole dish. My husband said the gnocchi was delicious as well. However the second night I ordered the same dish (creature of habit) and it was nowhere as good as it was the night before. There was barely any gravy which made the meat tough instead of buttery soft. That little blip is not enough to keep me from coming back next time in nyc. 5/5 read more

With zero prior knowledge, and it being picked by a savvy teammate, we went to Mercato last night. I was thrilled to see a Michelin Star rating and all I could think of was the show, The Bear. For some reason I equated this to a magical experience. Mercato did not disappoint, and I'll start with the wait staff. They were attentive and the dishes were fired with great timing, and the staff was properly attentive. A host of Italian standards and some a bit more funky, the menu has lots of options - but not too many. We narrowed it down to the beef carpaccio and the eggplant parm special to start. They served bread with oil loaded with capers, which was a nice touch of difference versus a chain Italian basic. For my main dish, I ordered the malloreddus al sugo di cinghiale (homemade sardinian cavatelli with braised wild boar ragu). Taking a risk, as I'm not one to usually get wild / game meats. The tiny cavatelli were beautiful, the wild boar ragu was dark and subtle. A fresh shredded bit of Parmesan goodness made it pop! I ordered a shareable side of fingerling potatoes which were solid, and not overly salted. For dessert, I ordered a shareable portion of tiramisu, which was gorgeously silken and a perfect treat. read more

Not sure what the lower star ratings are all about - that wasn't our dining experience at all! We were a party of 3 girls on a fun long (cold, wet, snow flurried) winter/January weekend in the City. It was the perfect first (Friday) night in town and we were iso a little local spot close to our hotel (midtown near Penn Station) that we could go to to hang out over a non-rushed home cooked meal, some wine and good conversation. MERCATO WAS JUST WHAT WE HAD ENVISIONED AND FIT THE BILL PERFECTLY. It was a Friday night, late-ish (730 ish) when we found Mercato on (where else?!!) Yelp in our hotel room. THIS PLACE IS OPEN TILL MIDNIGHT EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. Wow! That's AMAZING. PRO TIP1: HIGHLY RECOMMEND HAVING DINNER HERE AFTER THE SUN SETS! Why? Because this place is soooooo magical, beautiful, inviting and elegant AT NIGHT. Candlelit tables, low dimmed room lighting really makes you feel like you are in what I might envision a small, intimate place in the Italian countryside to be like! Soooo charming! (Let's put it this way, in terms of super moody lighting, I had to turn on my phone's flashlight to read the menu ha!) Mercato takes reservations - another plus for them - we didn't make them because we were looking for something that night that we could walk to but I would probably recommend making them if you're a larger party because this place is pretty small (which gives it its charm!) but can accommodate larger parties in their cozy back dining area. Great place and choice for a date night btw - cozy, intimate, personal with great service - they don't rush you - just a great ambience for a romantic private dinner. We arrived around 8PM (on a Fri mind you) and we had no issues getting a table (for 3) without a wait. We did notice the Michelin plaques on the wall just inside the entrance as some Yelpers have noted. The place was decently filled but not packed or crowded and I noticed that all the diners were enjoying their time there. Larger groups, a family with small children, couples. PRO TIP2: if you come for dinner after sundown (my Pro Tip1), ask to be seated in the back dining area! It's so cozy, warm, moody and intimate. A great gathering area and, in the winter, further away from outside drafts coming from the front entrance. I did note there are some fun seating options in the bar area up front as you walk in the door - right along the front window that looked really cool and vibey - if you see an available "window table," go for that I would say. Also - IF YOU'RE A SOLO DINER, the bar area right when you walk through the door looks super cool! I would come here by myself for a sit-at-the-bar meal and/or for a glass of wine or a cocktail. The menu is not massive - good down home Italian selections for everyone. We each had a different pasta entree. All were delicious. Pastas were perfectly chewy al dente. Sauces were perfect compliments to the dish - not oversauced, sauced just right. Prices were reasonable (for NYC!), portion sizes were decent. They served a complimentary bread basket with a small dipping bowl of olive oil with capers (agree with one reviewer - the capers were unnecessary and did not enhance the flavor of the dip lol - so we asked for another side of oil olive and asked for parm cheese which the server hand-grinded into it. We then added salt and pepper to it and - voila! A perfect dip!) Fresh ground parm cheese - nice touch and the sign of a true authentic Italian restaurant! In myyyyy book anyway. :) Glasses of wine were on the slightly expensive side - we are not wine aficionados so good wine is totally lost on us lol - but this place does seem to pride itself on its wine selection - in fact, we sat next to their corner wine cellar which was pretty darn impressive and was a decor statement piece in that back dining area - it gave their wine stock a legit air for sure. There were also shelves full of bottles of wine scattered throughout the restaurant. LOVED THE AMBIENCE HERE. THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. No issues whatsoever. In fact, we had probably about 4 different people serving us, stopping over to check on us, etc. Not in an annoying way or with the intention of rushing us out the door. We were able to enjoy a nice, leisurely dinner and were one of the last parties in that back room to leave. To cap off our meal, we decided to try the Semifreddo dessert. OMG. SOOOOOO GOOOOOD. Look at my pic. This is no store bought dessert! BEAUTIFULLY PLATED AND PRESENTED AND EVEN MORE DELICIOUS THAN IT LOOKED ON THE PLATE!!! Shareable if your small party wants just a palette-cleansing, refreshing taste. Our Mercato dinner on our first night in the City really set the bar for the rest of the trip. So into small, local, charming restaurants serving delicious housemade creations providing exceptional service by experienced staff. I have traveled across the United States, into Italy various locations in Europe and Mercato provided me with a truly delicious experience that will rival and win against the fresh hand crafted dishes made in every other location . walking in to this quaint picturesque eatery reminded me of being in Neumarkt, Italy where the narrow structure has exposed brick walls, simple decorations that looked to be handed down or perhaps never left. soft lighting, and joyful, authentic faces of what reminded me of a family meal, excited to share their stories and love of their craft. We were seatted immediately in front of large windows facing the busy New York neighborhood draped in scaffolding required to support the changes required toll that open to walking traffic outside. a small dish of lentils, capers and olive oil, fresh baked bread, simple but delicious kicked off our meal. The smooth texture and balanced flavors set the tone for what was to be the best meal we enjoyed in New York. All of the pasta was hand made, wide noodles, hand cut gnocchi, and firm spaghetti was absolutely delicious. The spaghetti with rich pomodoro sauce was well balanced and held large slices of sweet aromatic garlic. The linguini fungi was intensely flavorful, truly one of the favorites. Every nibble led me to understand how they achieved their Michelin star. I am not sure why there is not a long line down the block, but I will look forward to traveling back to New York and Mercato as soon as possible. Do not let the opportunity pass you by. read more

Mediocre Italian food with mediocre service. I ordered the Lasagna Tradizionale ($24), which did not really have any cheese in it (until I asked to add parmesan on top). It was also kind of flavorless aside from the tomato sauce and was too soft/mushy. I also tried the Fettuccine al Funghi ($20), which, on the other hand, was a bit too hard. This led me to believe that the pastas are not freshly made. The mushrooms in the fettuccine were pretty good though. Some of the staff are friendly, but our waitress was not that friendly and had a bit of an attitude (gave unhappy looks when we said we weren't interested in dessert or when asked to clarify menu items). It also took them a while to take our order after being seated, but then the food came pretty quickly. It was quite crowded inside on a Saturday night, although we were able to get a table without a reservation. There is a bar and multiple other areas with table seating. The dim lighting adds to a more intimate atmosphere. Overall, I was not impressed by the pasta or service at Mercato. It's not the worst Italian restaurant I've been to in the city, but it's definitely far from the best. read more

Went here for dinner tonight. They sat us at a small table in the front near the window. The place has some cool character to it, with brick walls. Service was okay, nothing special. The food was mediocre. They told us about a special appetizer which was fried dough with sprinkled cheese and marinara sauce. It turned out to be a couple tiny pizzas and was the most expensive item on our bill, $22. What a sneaky move that was. The sliced bread was dry and came with some odd lentil and oil mix in a bowl, that tasted pasty. I asked for butter and the female server immediately said they don't have any. What kitchen doesn't carry butter?! The three meatball appetizer I had was awful. Mushy meatballs that tasted like too much bread crumbs and it came with hard dry bread. The rigatoni Norma dish had too hard noodles and lacked flavor. My Diet Coke was 3/4 ice. Needless to say this place is far from authentic Italian food. A total rip off. read more

Thanks Yelpers, for pointing me to this restaurant. It was really , really good. Small inside, but the menu and specials were mighty. My DH said it best, not the usual menu. He had 2 large stuffed calamari on a bed of squid ink sauce, with the calamari covered with a light tomato sauce. Calamari were tender and stuffing excellent. Daughter had the fried platter with squid, shrimp and cod in a shattering light crisp batter. I had the octopus with potatoes, capers and olives with a side of sautéed broccoli Rabe. They were all wonderful. It was a very enjoyable meal and we'll remember it when we're looking for a meal near Broadway next time. Prices were reasonable too, a great deal for NYC. read more

Going to level with everyone here and share that I only had wine and tiramisu, as this was an after dinner but pre-late night pizza adventure for me LOL. The correct order of things when on vaca: full dinner, big amazing Italian dessert, followed up by pizza. Anyways, I was staying across the street and thoroughly enjoyed sitting at the bar here for some vino and tiramisu. My montepulciano by the glass was outstanding and the tiramisu was some of the best I've had. Do NOT skip if you're dining there! The menu is filled with Italian classics - this would be a fantastic spot to bring family prior to a show and away from the Times Square hellscape. The bartender chatted with me about Italy in between bites of tiramisu, and I am very much looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu here. Intimate, lovely space to boot! read more

I was a little hesitant to come to Mercato because I've been to some other highly rated Italian restaurants in NYC and not enjoyed it for the price point. This is a small but cozy restaurant. The back room was a little loud if other people are sitting near you. I think I took our waiter's opinion on everything and it didn't disappoint. He made a mocktail for me which was 1. Creative 2. Very kind to do since it wasn't on the menu and 3. Delicious. I thought all the food was very fairly and reasonably priced. Not huge portions but also not super expensive, and everything is really fresh. The fried artichokes were really good and the meet & cheese board had so much on it (this was definitely a good portion side). The ravioli was delicious - even though the sauce was a butter sage sauce the butter wasn't overpowering. The gnocchi looked so pillowy soft. Everyone enjoyed their food. The pistachio semifreddo was, again, delicious. Not too sweet and the perfect dessert. I would definitely come back here for some good Italian food and a mocktail! read more

We went to Mercato for desserts. The host who made us sit was exceptionally nice and made us seated and gave us the dessert menu. Ambiance of the restaurant was very cute as well. My sister and I ordered Tiramisu and their Almond Tarrone icecream. Both desserts were insanely tasty. Above all our host/server was very nice and kind and was giving ua some tips what to order next time when we come back for the food. Came on a Saturday night and had a reservation for 6:30Pm we waited about 15 minutes after the 6:30PM reservation to be seated. Our server Roberta was excellent, the food was bland and the ambiance was excellent. Just wished the food was better. We shared four appetizers Rucola, carciofini fitti, salsiccia E patate and the Polpo E patate. One major flaw was the sausage looked and tasted exactly like breakfast sausage long and thin. I've been to Italy and I have never seen this type of sausage throughout all of Italy. We had the The salmon and even though the menu states Chicory, it was spinach. The fettucine and mushrooms and the cavatelli with wild boar. The wine we ordered was good and at a fair price Nero di troia Botromagno. As a traveler coming from Las Vegas, I heard the food in NYC is something to try. I ordered the Lasagna to go, something simple. And it was just that... a simple lasagna. I ordered the food to go because looking at the restaurant it was a really tight space. I'm talking about elbow to elbow type of deal. And when I asked for plastic cutlery, I had about 3 staff ( that were sitting down by the bar area, assuming they are the owners ) say that there should have been some in the bag.
