We stopped in for my mom to grab a few supplies for a minor bathroom repair. She needed a few things that we weren't really sure where they were located and needed to ask for help. I will say the few staff we asked for help did generally help by pointing in the direction the item would be in but I felt like none of them were so busy that they couldn't walk us to the area (as they couldn't tell use an exact aisle). We did eventually find everything we were looking for. I generally just like browsing around. I found some bublr flavors I haven't seen other places. It sounded like someone was playing the piano upstairs but maybe it was just a radio, the escalator to go up was out of service so the elevator was a bit busy and not worth exploring upstairs. Every time I go to this Menards, I have a great experience. They have the cutest walk through display that changes with every holiday. The staff is knowledgeable and always helps me find the items I need. The store is huge, so any help with locating things is greatly appreciated. We went specifically for the live Edgewood, and although the selection wasn't the best, there was 1 in the very back that worked for what we needed. It's nice that they have Edgewood at an affordable price. The customer service at the return desk is always quick and easy; Nas was great! read more

Sheesh it's been over 11 years since I last updated this review. You know, everything in my previous review holds true. There are also employees here that have been here for many moons, and also some new people. They had supply chains issues post pandemic like many but they've expanded their outside yard and are able to offer more and better quality wood. We've been able to find just about anything we could need or want here, along with some items we wouldn't have thought of. I will say, the advice can be hit or miss from the staff, but everyone I've spoken to has been super friendly & helpful. I also love that they have a piano player, or at least the player piano going. We Midwesterners all know the motto: save big money at Menards! They almost always have some sort of rebate program, usually 11% back, which definitely helps the wallet during a large home project. Worst Menards in the Twin cities. A staff member "helped" my customer load the vanity and broke it. My customer said they were very aggressive when trying to fit it in the vehicle. When I brought it back for my customer, I told the manager I believe some compensation is in order (at least a slight discount) since they have to pay me to return it for something Menards did. Looked around Christmas and saw some cool Grinch ornaments, a musical Grinch doll with saxophone and other inflatables. The store was not busy at all. The cashier was nice. MasterCraft door I special ordered a fire door and then tried to install it in a lower garage that had a concrete block opening. My husband and I had much difficulty in getting it to fit, so we removed the brick molding. We have installed a dozen doors in our lifetime, so are familiar with the process. After the trim was removed, the door went in smoothly. Upon closer review, the brick molding did not have 90-degree angles in the corners, thereby skewing the squareness of the door. This explained why it was impossible to plumb the door into the opening, since the unit was not square with the brick molding attached. A week after it was installed, the plastic sill plate cracked. Menards does not warranty the workmanship of their product, but only offered to send out parts to replace the defective parts. This simple project involved many more hours of work to fix their poor workmanship. The Jeld-Wen warranty offers compensation for any labor required to remedy their workmanship. I did not buy a kit to build a door, but rather a door unit. So, if you want a door that has quality workmanship, do NOT buy a Mastercraft door, which is a subsidiary of Menards. read more

I bought some plumbing items to fix a broken seal on a toilet. Wasn't exactly sure what I would need so I bought enough to cover the bases. I used my Menards rebates to cover the cost, and since that was not enough I paid the rest with a debit card. When I took my items back that I did not need, I was told that I had to get the value from the items in the form of in store credit. I was quite upset by this. I have spent thousands of dollars in Menards over the years. Their system of marking up prices 15% to give me a 11% rebate is bad enough (and in order to get that I have to take the time to fill out a form and spend an additional 73 cents on a stamp and walk it to a mailbox), Basically they have made certain that if you spend any money in the store, they will keep every penny. They are not unique. If I go to Kohls they will mark the price to a price that no one has ever paid in the history of the product and amazingly give you a huge discount. Everything is on sale, trying to give you the false impression that you are saving some huge amount of money. I for one am tired of the lies and deceipt. I will not ever shop at a Menards store again. I would rather go to Ace hardware and spend a little more knowing that if what I bought does not work out, they will return my money read more

Yesterday, I was nearly hit by a car because some genius installed a high fence over sidewalk leading from University Ave to the parking lot and did not provide an alternative pedestrian walkway leaving one to WALK in the entrance as the vehicles. It's generally OK, but then if you go here enough you will encounter the rudest, laziest thugs working the store you will ever meet. E.g., "hi, would you please help me find XXX, it has SKU YYY" to which I get "it's over in aisle ZZZ, you can find it by looking" Or when you put your shopping list in your pocket at the checkout aisle (because you need your hands to pay) and 400# security guard rushes out: "what did you put in your pocket? I just saw you on camera. What did you put in your pocket?" "hi, good afternoon to you too, oh, this pocket, yeah my shopping list". Oh, you've already walked away from me. It was so bad that even the clerk at the cash register was embarrassed. Store manager will just recite some BS about "profiling" and "red flags". Menards has a great selection of home and hardware needs, but customer focused staffing is very poor. It's hard to find an employee in you department that you are looking, and when you do walk around with that "blank look" the employees don't care or notice. Too often I've seen then too focused on chitchat with other employees or their momentary task to pay any attention to customers who need assistance. Having a store map on locating anything (like Home Depot has) would be a great help. Tip, if you want customer service, go to Home Depot. read more

Went in for the first time during Black Friday. Not sure how things are on a non-event day, but on this day I found employees to be helpful and not at all begrudgingly. Most actually smiled and seemed happy to help. I always assumed it was a store for those look to do home related projects, but surprisingly there's a range of non-home items. Like foods, pet supplies, hair products and clothes. That said not only did I leave with the BF deals I came in for, I left with a few extra items like butter mints and a collapsible dog bowl. Menards has a lot of useful stuff, so it's often a good idea to come here. The Midway location was remodeled a few years ago to add a second floor, and although I like the additional space, I don't like the fact that an escalator is not one of the options for getting between the two floors. Not a regular escalator, anyway. There's a long, slow, flat one that is designed to allow for carts. But if someone has a cart on that thing, everyone behind them is stuck waiting on that plodding journey between floors, which takes longer than an elevator trip. There are also regular stairs, though. Menards has hardware and home improvement needs well covered, much like its chief rival Home Depot. Since going to Home Depot can be such a drag, this is a bit of an improvement, although you'll experience similar customer service problems. They should really do a better job of addressing the fact that it can be difficult to find what you need. My "favorite" is when someone helpfully explains that what you're looking for is "over in hardware". It's like, dude we're in one big hardware store. May as well tell me "over there, in Minnesota". Also, they remodeled the cashier area in such a way that the cashier doesn't face you. What does that tell you? The cashier interaction is invariably awkward because of this. That said, there are sections that are more distinct from that. Upstairs there's a good area for cleaning supplies where I get a lot of stuff for my house. And there are groceries! It's at least as good for groceries as a large Holiday store. And they seem to have all the supplies you'd need for big projects; all kinds of building supplies that intimidate me even though I do sometimes need them. I also like their section with patio furnishings. So yeah, Menards is where I often go for mass home improvement needs, and you should consider doing the same. I cant fucking count how many people asked me if I needed help while I was in here everyday for like a week straight. So many good folks, the manager Justin marster was 1 helluva dude who actually had me cracking up & just wanting to shoot the shit instead of do my work & finish what I actually came to do. I cant count how many Fucking times I got lost inside this super badass place & then another justin who I learned was called "J-Lo" found me looking all lost & retarded. He was a huge help as well & God bless that awesome little bastard for politely listening as I pissed & moaned about my wife who was being a real "bitch ho" during these particular trips to menards. We even discussed a different version of the game "chicken" but I'll leave that story for another day. I accidentally bumped into some russian guy on a forklift who was super dooper fucking helpful & despite his accent he spoke better english than most native Minnesotans I ran into. Another dude on a forklift hooked me up, I think his name was John but you'd think he was mexican since he looked like cheech from cheech & chong but he's actually Columbian. I bought a shower sliding door. Menards at Univercity location doesn't have the one I wanted, then they got it from their stocking location. Later I found out I can not use this door for safety codes reason. I had to return the door, and bought another door at Menards. Menards charged me 25% restocking fee for the one I had to return. which is $237! Also watch out your 11% rebate thing. I buy $6000-$10,000 each year due to heavy improvements of my houses, I only got partial 11% rebate back. read more

Today I was just in here to shop since I was in the area and needed new faucets for an upcoming vanity and sink I'm getting installed next week... I first walked into this amazing store 10 years ago....and I remember being taken back with all the extravagance....WOW...Grand piano in the lobby with a live player! 10 years later I walk in... it's not as shiny and new anymore but the grand piano is still there with a live piano player. The only reason I gave one star at all is because the app does not allow ZERO stars. It was raining on the delivery date chosen, and the driver clearly wasn't about getting wet. He gave us an ultimatum; dump my delivery on the front lawn, or he will leave. Thinking we would just follow up with customer service, my husband agreed to have it dumped on our lawn. The driver crawled through the cab into the back where he literally kicked it out of the truck and left. I, in the pouring rain having paid extra to have it delivered, dragged the heavy awkward box to the backyard alone. (Husband had recent surgery on his arm and couldn't help) Calling customer service was no help either. Justin, the stores general manager, simply said, "Well next time don't let him drop it there. You got the merchandise, don't be picky." My husband and I try to shop local, shop small {er} business, and stay away from the big chains, but Menards have proven they aren't about the customer service life, and if it's a hassle they will not be bothered. Well, we don't need to bother with Menards. Delivery service is part of the customer service experience, part of the service, and too expensive not to be done right. Justin, the general manager who does not have a boss above him I'm told, has a lot to learn about going the extra mile to retain good business. Shame on you Menards for hiring piss poor delivery, hiring piss poor general managers, and not following through and making good on a very expensive delivery charge. OK -- this Menards gets five stars just because it is the coolest, strangest, most awesome Menards I have ever been to... Even for a Mendards, this one is HUGE. Think of all those movies where people get locked in a giant warehouse club type of store. They could easily film one of those here. It's a two-floor Menards and is seriously bigger than any Super Walmart. Accordingly, the selection is crazy wide-ranging and vast, even for a Menards. While we were there, we looked at grilling things, propane heaters, wood chips for smoking, dog stuff, fleece blankets, DVDs, kitchen stuff, chainsaws, TVs, lawn ornaments, hardware and candy. Totally bizzare but a really fun way to waste some time! My favorite part of this store, by far, is the people-mover/cart-mover that takes you and your cart up or down from floor to floor. I have seen big moving walkways in airports. And I have seen cart movers in two-story stores in other cities. But I have never seen one quite like this that is SO long and SO big and just SO impressive. Who knew you'd find this at a Menards??? And there's often someone at the bottom playing a piano. Because... why not. Even if you don't need to buy anything, I highly recommend going to this particular Menards just for the fun of hanging out there and looking at stuff. I had worked for Menards for 16 years and worked part time moved up to full time and cross trained in 4 departments and then was assisted manager in flooring. Had been thru many managers and general managers and have never been mistreated or disrespected until a month ago and the assistant manager in hardware was very disrespectful to me cussing and swearing. I decided to work part time on other weekend so I wouldn't have to see that assistant manager and was told I would need to work a week day as well so I agreed to work on Fridays. The new HR wouldn't even ask to inquire about what was going on she was very rude as well. Never the less I said I would turn in my badge and the HR just put her hand out and said goodbye.. I don't shop at Menards a lot, but when I feel like being handy which usually only lasts about 5 minutes, I come to this location. My attention span is low when it comes to home projects. I want things done, but realize how much work it is and lose interest fast. This location is the mother of all Menards. The layout is huge. It's two levels and has the nifty little people mover for lazy individuals like me who don't feel like climbing the steps or waiting for the elevator. I can also throw my cart on there which provides as something to lean on while I take the lazy ride up to the second level. Around the holidays, believe it or not the short ride is quite entertaining. There's a grand piano (sometimes with a player) serenading Lite FM piano versions or holiday tune muzak beats surrounded by those obnoxious size energy sucking snow globes that you can place in your yard. What would Leonardo DiCaprio say? Kidding- I don't care what he would say.. If big snow globes are a person's thing, who am I to judge? Nice selection of Christmas decor and clearanced out items at the end of the season. I found a really nice tree skirt for $5.00 after the holiday season. Garden Center is nice during season with a nice variety of no nonsense hanging plants and other low maitenance flowers and such. I enjoy looking at all the bathroom fixtures and model bathrooms that I'm way too lazy to install. Staff has always been pretty helpful and well informed. However the staff over by the air conditioners always seem to be on break. I had a terrible experience today. I brought back a lawnmower, that I purchased 5 weeks ago. The self propulsion had stopped working. They explained that I needed to take it to a 3rd party to be analyzed. I paid over 400, and didnt want a "fixed" lawnmower. NO was all the store manager could say. He is so afraid of corporate people, he can not make a decision against policy. The service at menards is poor, and is a direct result of the Menard family leadership. The most singularly frustrating business in Minnesota to try to give your hard earned money to in exchange for goods and services. The store layout is an abomination. A hardware store has gotten cutesy selling all sorts of stuff you'd get at Target near the registers. Then any actual hardware you may need is a full 3 city blocks from the entrance due to the megalithic size of the store. If you happen to need the assistance of an employee, good luck. This store is the Bermuda Triangle of Lost Employees. Just yesterday I was on the second floor (a labyrinth of nonsensical layout) and didn't see a single employee anywhere over several minutes of brisk walking to find one. At my wit's end, I seriously considered filling my cart up with random crap, one item each from every shelf in the store, and then jamming it onto the World's Slowest Escalator sideways and walking out. But back on the first floor where I noted the presence of some humans, and therefore possibly employees, I found an employee who was able to help me! She told me where to find the part and even offered to walk me to it. I thanked her but felt I could track down it's locale. I then had to go up the God Damned World's Slowest Escalator all the way to the far back of the store. There I found similar parts, but no exact fit, so I had to buy two parts and got lucky that one worked. So now I have to go back there to return the extra part. Maybe I can sign up for a complimentary colonoscopy while I'm there. Ever been to Home Depot? Wow talk about a fancy smanchy hardware store. Grand piano in the lobby with a live player! With all this extravagance I thought the prices would be high but they seemed to be pretty reasonable or lower than home depot. The grill guru spent at least a half an hour with us as we hemmed and hawed over whether to get a natural gas or propane grill. He didn't try to upsell and and just gave us the facts and let us make up our own minds. They helped us get our new grill into the car and the gas tank was cheap too. We are now happily grilling away and thinking of gong back there this weekend to get some patio furniture! This particular Menards is conveniently located right off of University Avenue in Saint Paul (right off the light rail) and has a decent sized parking lot. During COVID, this Menards has been really cool about delivering online orders same day. We did end up going into the store the other week to purchase paint and other supplies. The staff were all very friendly and helpful! I was surprised staff was actually asking if we needed help finding anything because nowadays, customer service people in big box retail just ignore customers. Also, the staff at the paint desk were very knowledgable about the specific type of paint we were looking for. The only thing that was a bummer about this store was it seemed very shopped and almost empty. Maybe its because of COVID? Maybe its because it was during their 11% rebate deal? Either way, a lot of shelves were almost empty. Regardless, I will go to Menards over Home Depot any day. read more

Being a corner house we can't not have outdoor Christmas lights. That's just blasphemous. They have a great selection here. You also run into many good buys like really cheap dish soap and other cleaning products. But this is not a safe haven as far as food goes, they have every kind of junk snacks, retro candy, almost movie theater size right on the outer aisle. My husband made a special point to report what wonderful customer service he received from Breanna, who went out of her way to arrange that he was brought down the humidifier filter so he wouldn't have to make the trek upstairs. Why am I writing a review about a Menards? There's one Menards tip you should know: Check it out for kids toys around the Christmas season. Seriously. I went shopping ALL OVER for stuff this past holiday season and then I went to Menards to try to find a toy tractor...and found most of the other stuff I had purchase for a fraction of the cost. For instance: Domino set at Target? $12.99. Domino set at Menards? Around $3. They don't have a great selection or anything (and they have some crazy board games from when I was little that I was pretty sure they didn't make anymore ..like Shark Attack!), but it's totally worth a trip. And on other notes: The staff has always been very helpful/friendly. I appreciate the clean and organized store (it feels spacious and open...and I love the little lighting fixture displays upstairs--so bright!) and they also have a curiously great selection of camping foods (Shore Lunch soups, anyone?) for stocking stuffers for the MenFolks in my family. read more

Guess I never knew Menards was like a candy store for grown adults who are into DIY projects. This place even has candy and canned products (maybe more too, but I just have not ventured off throughout the entire store to actually check). If you can't find what you are looking for to complete a project in your house/apt then you don't know what you are looking for and you should hire someone else to do that project for you. This Menards is a huge 2 floor building that literally has everything including the kitchen sink. I usually am not the shopper at this place but my roommates are frequent visitors. I think by now the workers there know them by face. They can't seem to leave the store without buying something, which means that this place is doing one great job of making sure people get what they need and then some.
