I'm not saying you should visit Kendall's hardware simply because they have the two most adorable store cats in the world, but it certainly a good reason to do so. In world of large big box stores in Amazon, the local hardware store is more important than ever. It's where you can get advice, where you can find things easily, where the staff is always helpful. Kendall's is a wonderful store. I normally visit a different location so it's not aware of the store cat thing. I may need to visit this location more often. I stopped in For a few specific items and was immediately greeted and led to each of the items. It could not have been easier. The selection was amazing and staff super friendly. I love this store. read more

This ace hardware has always been helpful through my years of living in this neighborhood! And there isn't a lack of people that is willing to help. The selection they have is of wide variety. read more

The customer service guy (Edward or Andrew, I can't remember) was incredibly helpful! I came in trying to find a nut and bolt combo to fix a patio chair, and he took the time to help me find exactly what I needed. I absolutely would have messed it up without his help! He was knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely nice. Ace is lucky to have him! read more

Customer service and racial profiling. While at out local hardware store placing an order for a home improvement repair. I proceeded to look for weather installation, such as plastic for my windows, and while I was doing so with my child, I felt as if someone was peeking around the corner which made me feel very uncomfortable. I then went down the aisle a little bit to look at some ways to insulate my door and the cashier was basically peaking around the corner and didn't even ask if I needed help. As I returned back to my partner, who was still placing the home repair need whom had a question for me, I observe the cashier basically running behind a customer who had just entered the store and went to the right side of the store who was a African-American male. I think that this location can improve from understanding the authentic community in which it serves in following the diversity equity and inclusion initiatives that most businesses should be following by now . read more

Great service, well stocked and if they don't have it they'll order it for you. Join the rewards club and get a calendar for $5 off coupons, When you walk you're greater and there is always some one there to help you find what you need, the size of the bolt, o ring or washer. Old time service. And its a private lot so parking is easy too. Highly recommend. read more

I have lived in the Payne-Phalen area for 20+ years and have shopped at Kendall's several times--spray paint, winter salt, bird seed, miscellaneous screws/nuts/bolts, and cat/dog food. Kendall's carries Nutrisource cat/dog food. One gets a free bag after buying X number of bags. August 2023 I needed a bag of dog food. I thought I was getting close to the "magic number" of bags for the freebie so decided to go to Kendall's (Chuck 'n' Don's also does the same thing) since I live nearby. I arrived about 4:15 p.m. There were only about three open spaces in the parking lot (on the east side of the store), probably from people stopping on their way home from work. I went in the back door and took a left at the main north-south aisle as the pet food is on the south wall of the store. The customer check out is also on the main aisle. I grabbed a large bag of dog food and went to the check out area. There are two cash registers. I believe both had clerks at them with one clerk checking out a customer. I don't recall if the second clerk had a customer or was on the phone. I didn't want to block the north-south aisle so took a step back. The clerk with the customer either finished up with the customer and then walked away or the customer needed assistance with something so the clerk left the counter to assist the customer. The other clerk was on the phone for a while so wasn't helping a customer. I stepped up to the unattended cash register so that when a clerk came I could check out. A clerk came with a customer he was helping. Even though I was standing next to the register, the clerk (a middle aged looking guy) completely ignored me (he could have said "I'll be with you in a minute"), checked out the customer, and left! The other clerk who was on the phone ignored everyone. There were two other employees (who are easy to identify as they wear tie dyed T-shirts) who also acted as if I didn't exist. I ended up waiting about 10 minutes and during that time was ignored by FOUR clerks. I finally got checked out. Haven't returned since. This isn't the first time that the customer service has been bad. Several years back I was looking for mink oil so stopped at Kendall's. There was none in stock but a young male clerk said he could order it for me. I said that would be fine. Never heard back from anyone at Kendall's. I got the mink oil at George's shoe shop. There was another time something was going to be ordered for me or the clerk would see if it could be ordered and then get back to me. No one ever contacted me. Several years back a friend had brought a metal framed, glass-topped coffee table to Kendall's. She needed to have the glass replaced as it had broken. It was WEEKS before it was done and there was a flaw in it. read more

Customer service was awesome! As soon as I walked in I was greeted and asked if I needed assistance. Dragon helped me find the right part I needed. She spent time helping me and answering questions. I was a bit disappointed when they allowed others in there without masks despite the sign on the door requiring them. When I checked out Heather was very attentive and offered a free sample and was very upbeat and polite. I don't usually experience great customer service like this but when I do, I become a very loyal customer. read more

Friendly service, great selection and they even have cats and a dog there. I even received a FREE bag of popcorn!

My husband and I were having an issue with our cold water knob in our shower and the sales associates all made it a point to say hello and ask how they could help. Best hardware store in the cities. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I can't think of any other business in town that gives excellent customer service EVERY time I visit. From small purchases (gloves and screws and plumbing supplies) to large ones (grills, lawnmowers), I've always been treated with kindness and respect at this store. I'm not a "handyman" by any stretch, so I appreciate their patience and desire to teach. Even when the ACE corporate website was having major problems, the employees here took it on themselves to make sure I got the results I needed. I'd much rather shop here than try my luck at the big box stores. And, for the big purchases, the prices at Kendall's have been exactly the same as the big stores anyway. read more

Prepare for a time travelling experience. It's the way hardware stores used to be, in the best possible way. The staff are helpful, and will guide you to what you need, not what they need to sell. Forget cavernous stadium sized buildings and staff always playing hide and seek. This will spoil you. Give them a shot. Also, they have cats. read more

Fantastic location (minus the cat roaming around, I'm super allergic). Minus a star for that but the associates are friendly and knowledgeable. Lots of patience too. Would choose this location over the various other Ace's in the cities. read more

This is our closest Ace and we've always liked it. Very friendly. Sometimes a cat or a dog to pet (bonus!). Today, however, was a great day. I wanted a LOT of paint samples, most of them not from in-house brands, though I did have the names, brands, codes, and hex codes. For whatever reason, their system was having a really hard time tracking them down. Randall, though, was a rockstar. Super patient. Very nice. I really appreciated him sticking with me, especially since they were busy. Bravo Ace. I'll be back. read more

After frustrating trips to Home Depot and Menards, I was fed up by the staff's utter ignorance of something as simple as sillcock washers. Home Depot told me they didn't have the washers I needed (because he couldn't find them in the (wrong) section he was looking in), and Menards carried the needed washers, but was out of stock on three of the four items that I needed. That led me to Kendall's, where a very helpful and knowledgeable woman not only found exactly what I needed, but installed them on the valve stems I had brought along. In the future, I will very likely go out of my way to give my business to Kendall's. Two hardware stores closer to me have been driven out of business by the big box operations, and I want to reward this terrific neighborhood business that does it right. read more

I tried this place twice and find that as a neighborhood business, they're NOT very neighborly. 1) I called and asked if they had a round sled for my dog, guy said yeah, "they're $6.99." I send my son up, who happens to be biracial, he was charged $10.99. I went up there and confronted the guy and he said he was looking at a mislabeled one while on the phone with me. I said well the decent thing to do is to give it to me for that price, he said, "well I really can't and there's nothing I can do." 2) Feb. 2019, I dropped off a storm window to get glass replaced and the guy said he could try and have it done by Saturday, I said super. I called up there for an update Saturday afternoon and in the most snide and condescending way he said, "I thought I told you it would be 2-4 days." Once I get my window back - I will never give this business my business again. ~ signed neighborhood homeowner. read more

Great hardware store to pick up those quick emergency items and parts. Went in today to fix my leaking outdoor water valve and was greeted right when I walked in and walked to the parts I needed. Made sure I left with everything I needed for the job, but didn't try to upsell, just was very helpful. read more

I love Kendall's! Their lovely dog Tula stands guard at the door and is super friendly. There is also a resident cat or two wondering around and can either be helpful or not, depending on wether or not they are sitting on the time you wish to examine. =) The staff here is super friendly and knows the items they do have very well. They have a large selection of locks and will rekey them for you if you ask. They do not have a large quantity of different times but they have most items you really need from a hardware store. The prices might be slightly more than one of the big chains but I guarantee you will have friendly help whenever you need it! And besides, you make up those few cents in the gas you save not having to drive all over town. Support your local businesses!! =) read more

I walked into Kendall's Ace Hardware on Payne Ave recently and was surprised by how friendly and helpful the staff was. I've subsequently returned on several occasions to purchase odd items that I had difficulty finding elsewhere. When it comes to replacement parts for window screens or odd-sized screws, if they don't have the items in stock, they can often order them. read more

Kudos to the entire Kendall's Ace staff!! If they don't have it ,they can get it. The big box stores can be given a lesson from them in customer service. Service with a greeting and a Thankyou. My family loves this store. read more

Really nice hardware store, staff are very helpful, did not know they were there until I looked it up, so glad I did. The building itself looks so nice on the outside, the inside is so nice and clean. read more

We love coming here for hardware and household necessities. It's a friendly, helpful place, crammed full of interesting bits. Today we needed work gloves, a programmable thermostat and an outdoor thermometer. All were reasonably priced and there was a good selection to choose from. Plus, they always have freshly popped popcorn available for a free snack. We had a short wait to check out, but enjoyed pointing out some novelty items (like the tie-dyed t-shirts with the store logo and amusing sayings on them) to each other. All this made a chore into a fun family outing. read more

The staff is very friendly and helpful. However, on a few occasions, there was either no follow-through or I ended up dissatisfied with their recommendation for a product. One time I wanted to buy mink oil and I believe I looked online to see if Ace carried it. It did, so I went to Kendall's. They don't carry it in the store but an employee looked it up in their system and said he could get it for me. Never heard anything back on that and it's probably been a year. I ended up going to George's shoe shop on Grand and got it there. Another time I purchased a kitchen sink "stopper" as one of mine was no longer fitting tightly. When I got home, I discovered that I bought the wrong kind--the one I bought had a metal peg on the underside instead of a flat bottom so it didn't fit in my sink. I returned to Kendall's with the stopper so I could get a refund. I told the employee why I was returning it. Instead of simply giving me a refund, he said he could saw the peg off so it would work in my sink. He did that and although it fit in my sink, it didn't provide a real tight seal, which allows the water to slowly drain out of the sink. If I putz with it, I can get it in fairly tightly but I shouldn't have to work that hard. I could have returned once again to Kendall's and asked for my money back but the item cost less than $5 so it wasn't worth my time. Around May/June 2015 I went to Kendall's to buy a new garden hose. I had looked online. The "pocket" hose was (and still is) frequently advertised on TV. I had read reviews of it online and although there were more positive than negative, the negative reviews were enough of a concern that I decided that was one hose I wouldn't buy. When I got to Kendall's and told an employee that I was looking for a garden hose, he immediately recommended the pocket hose. I told him about the negative reviews I had seen. He enthusiastically told me that just recently a customer came in to buy her third pocket hose because she just loved them. I silently wondered why she needed three hoses. So, I shoved aside my misgivings and bought the pocket hose. What a mistake! A couple months after I bought it, it had a hole or small tear in it and I hadn't even used it that much. Then probably late summer or fall, when I turned the hose on, no water came out of the nozzle. When I investigated, I discovered that there was another tear--about six-inches (I think the seam simply came apart)--so all the water was coming out at that spot. So, the hose didn't even last one season. I'll never buy one of those again. I still shop there on occasion and the employees are still friendly and helpful but in the future, I will listen to my own inner voice rather than blindly take the recommendations of the staff. read more
