In my view, a once great hardware store is going down the tubes. I've been shopping there for over 30 years; when it was owned by the Frattalones, it always had a wide selection of items, including harder to find stuff, and better quality builder's hardware and contractor supplies. Since they sold out to that Tennessee holding company in 2021, the product selection seems to have cratered, shelves seem poorly stocked, and a lot of the older employees who gave the place character have left. I just don't see the value proposition in shopping someplace that has worse selection and 20% higher prices than, say, Menards or Home Depot. Too bad the Frattalones sold out. read more

This is the only place in the twin cities that I can find Frosty Top Birch Beer. If you like root beer, you'll love birch beer. They used to carry it all the time then it was gone. Now they have it again. I go to Frattallones because it's close and I can get in and out right away and I don't have to run through half the store to find someone to help me. I always pull for the local guys over the big box store behemoths. But I also feel that they need to serve us well and, more often than naught, they do. The store on Plato Avenue in St. Paul has a program where customers can bring in their snowblowers in the Spring, leave them over the Summer to be tuned up, then pick them up in the Winter. We also drop the lawn mower off in the Fall and pick up in the Spring, sharpened blade and all. This is a wonderful program for us because our tiny garage has very little space for 3 bulky machines, so we bring in two in the Spring and trade those two for one in the Fall. The past couple of times the big Craftsman snowblower and small Honda have been returned in, shall we say, less than pristine condition. This year the grounding plug is missing on the Craftsman and the pull cord won't budge -- something is preventing any movement. The little Honda is not tuned correctly and is backfiring horribly. Last night we had over a foot of snow. No problem, we thought. We've got the blowers all tuned and ready to go. Tried pulling the cord on the big one, and nearly ripped my shoulder out of its socket. So off to find the cord to use the electric start, found it, looked in the plug to see which way to insert the grounding plug, and what? Where the heck is it?!? Dang. I've got to get it started so plugged it in anyway, said a prayer and pushed the starter button. It didn't start. It never started. Grrr. Ok, let's try the little Honda. Two pulls and it started. Wow, did it start! It sounded like it was going a million rpms! I thought it was going to blow up so I pulled out the choke. Better, running rough, but better. Off to blow off the sidewalk. After 15-20 minutes it started running rough and backfiring again so I pulled out the choke all the way. Must get the sidewalk cleared. Unfortunately, that never happened. The little guy died a few minutes after. I called the store and spoke to Service Dept. He was very nice and said that if I got the blowers to him, he could start working on them right away. I was exasperated, told him that my car was socked in by 2 feet of snow, and no, I was not going to bring them down, he was going to come and get them. Crickets. Then he said Ok I'll get it scheduled with Logistics. 3 hours later and thanks to my super nice neighbor and her snowblower, the snow was cleared and the non-blowers are still here. One day later, they're still here. To their defense, it is Sunday. They will be here until at least tomorrow. I don't think they started the blowers after they were "tuned up". If they did, I would like to think they would have known something was wrong and fix them. I'm going to clean out my garage so that I can fit in all 3 machines. Fool me once, shame on you. Close, convenient and just a cute little neighborhood hardware store. I always pop down to this location when I need an extra set of keys made. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Only thing that is hit or miss is parking. However, for the most part I've always been pretty lucky and found a place. read more

This place is single girl's dream: you breeze into the door, spot an idle worker and say "do you want to help me?" and they are always obliged to walk you aisle by aisle locating the random stuff on your list. I was a stupid person that didn't take measurements for some teeny-tiny screws I needed and thus a 5 minute hypothetical conversation ensued between myself and the most helpful worker - all for my .68+tax purchase! They employ some surprisingly likable teenagers that are always quick to visit at the check-outs. Instead of defaulting to the usual big-box places, I highly recommend stopping in for pretty much anything you need! read more

This is the Frattalone's ACE at the Crocus Hill end of Grand Ave. It's a great hardware store to have in the 'hood, and they have an incredible amount of stuff crammed into that little space (in a good way). Good local shop to grab things like flowers, pots and soil, or little pieces of hardware you need in the course of day to day life. The employees are knowledgeable and eager to help. The downside is, as you might expect, they aren't the cheapest option out there. If you can afford the slight price differential, or don't have a car, this is the place for you. They'll help you load your new plants onto your wagon so you can pull them home. read more

Brought in a very small 12" x 6" screen to be rescreened. Dropped it off on June 15 and they told me it would be ready on July 1. I went in on July 5 and it was not ready yet and they told me "you should not have been told that". Incompetence and laziness of the highest degree. Last time I had to have these repaired was about seven months ago at an Ace Hardware in Oregon. They did it while I was waiting. read more

I like hardware stores, I know that's so stereotypical male, but I can't help it. I'll be honest, these guys have the largest advantage that they're walking distance from my house, so I end up there way more often than I might otherwise. The Good: They are so knowledgable it's freaky. You ask them if some device exists, they say, no but if you got all of these components it would do the same thing. They always know where everything is, I start discribing something and they listen and say "OH, you mean the do-hicky-sprocket-thingy" and take me straight to it. The amount of time I've saved by coming here and just asking what something is called is worth the cons in most cases. The bad: as a small hardware store, they just can't compete with their larger competitors in prices. Even their house brand is more expensive than name brand items elsewhere. One time I went there looking for a hack saw, when I saw how much their cheapest hack saw was, I went to target and got a stanley one for about $5 less than their store brand one. I hate to make it a game with numbers when dealing with small locally owned businesses, but unfortuneately I don't make enough to be that not choosy in widely available goods. Not that I don't ever buy stuff there, but I frequently find myself getting in the car to go elsewhere if I think the item I need will be too expensive there. So: if you need something and have no idea what it is or what it's called, go here and they will help you get exactly what you need. Otherwise, go somewhere less expensive. read more

I have lots of home projects in the works these days as I get ready for the arrival of Baby G. This led to a return trip to Ace and it was even better than last time. You cannot walk more than five steps with a confused look on your face, without one of their helpful staff asking if you need assistance. I ended up being helped by about five different people (for five different things) and they were all knowledgeable and nice. They also didn't make me feel dumb for knowing next to nothing about hardware supplies so I give them extra points for that. Another bonus is that Ace has lots of non-hardware related items as well. There are multiple isles of cute kitchen supplies and fun stuff to put in your yard. They also have cookie cutters in non-traditional shapes (elephants!) and duct tape in leopard print, zebra print and neon pink. Love this place. read more

Compared to Seven Corners, this joint is like the cleaned-up (almost sanitized) suburban version of an Ace. It's like a Barnes & Noble to an old dusty-musty used bookstore. Which is not a bad thing, because it's a lot easier to find stuff, get in and get out. And it's definitely not a big box store...dunno if they have their own parking lot, but we had no problem finding a spot out front, in our weekend warrior glory. read more

A throwback to the days when the corner hardware store wasn't just a place to buy tools and materials, it was the place to go to get rock-solid advice on your project. Exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable staff, who've managed to answer every question I've ever thrown at them. I consider myself to be pretty handy, but whenever I run into a problem I've never dealt with, these folks always set me up with everything I need, including detailed instructions, in about the time it would've taken me to find a parking space at one of the Big Box dives. Less, if we're talking about that idiotic lot at the University Menards. Sure, it's a small store (Albeit packed to the gills.) so their prices are a little higher. I for one am happy to cough up an extra buck or two to be treated decently and get actual help when I need it! Parking out front is always a mess, but they have a clearly marked little lot off the alley behind the store. read more

Nothing special about this store. Employees will hound you from the minute you walk in. At first it seems helpful, but it gets overbearing quickly. Also, if you have any service done there, they will quote you one price, then jack it up when you pick up your item. read more

Often put things away for the season when you still need them. Hard to navigate with more than 1-2 items because of the multiple levels and overstuffed aisles. Hard to park in front to pick up seasonal items.Long, inefficient lines for the cashiers. Service can be surly. Have to order more and more stuff from Amazon. read more

I live part time in this neighborhood in an old condo (2nd home). Frattalone's Ace Hardware on Summit Hill is 5+star. The staff are friendly - and helpful. I've been in MANY times for everything from paint to plumbing/broken hinges to electrical switches. Most appreciated is their expertise. I've learned from them how to plumb a leaking toilet to rewiring a 3-way switch. They have offered to lug heavy items to my car, taken calls over the phone for advice and made suggestions for paint spills. Ordinarily I would have asked my dad or older brother for this advice/help, but they have passed away to the fix-it-up better place. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Frattalones on Summit Hill.
