Amazing staff - Darnell was outstanding in helping me today. I was trying to back into my driveway and got my car stuck in the alley ice ruts - Minneapolis plowing was not top rate this winter. Darnell delivered bags of salt and traction grit. He brought an ice pick and worked on the ruts, then spent time pushing the car to get me out. Pretty awesome hardware store with great prices on the corner, in the tiny Minnehaha Plaza, in a residential neighborhood in South Minneapolis. Definitely one of the better hardware stores that I've dealt with in the Great Lakes region and really friendly and I got exactly what I needed. I have been in this store quite a few times over the years. In my humble and misguided opinion, this is the best nuts & bolts shop in Minneapolis. Never have I found another type of shop like this. What other shop, near you, that you will find chicks or bunnies and a resident cat? I came in looking for one thing or another and ended up leaving with a tool box sized wood saw, among other things... Such are the dangers of walking into this place. I've been there numerous times now for random stuff from an organically recycling bin to felt pads for chairs. Staff are always friendly and willing to point you in the right direction. Prices are a little high, but you pay for the connivence. The Ace rewards coupons more than makes up for it. Parking is easy, the store has its own lot. The store also has 2 per cats that you can see wandering around the store at anytime and like a good scratch. read more

First off I decided to sit on this review for a while... I was going to give them 4 stars but after reading a review of another Yelper I decided to give them 5. Let me tell you why. I didn't like the fact that a they abused Ace, but the more I thought about it they were abusing Yelp. So I applaud the cashier at Ace. Said Yelper decided at the last minute to buy an additional sled. They asked the cashier to wait while they went and got one. She wouldn't. So they only bought one, the store "missed out on a sale". I'm glad the cashier did this. Any self absorbed princess that thinks her time is more valuable than the next customer shouldn't be indulged. Next, Yelp shouldn't be abused. I don't care if you are "Elite" or not, it's not a points game... it's about honest reviews. Don't say in your review that they didn't have a good sled selection, give them 2 stars, then write as a tip to "buy sleds here!" just so you can get "first to tip". Funk that. Wait, did I just age myself? All I'm saying is lets be honest. On that note here is my review. I found the staff extremely polite and helpful. I love our local Ace Hardware for so many reasons. First, they are a cooperatively run business and it definitely shows! Their customer service is always great - workers greet you in the store and ask if you need help finding anything. Plus, they'll give you advice on projects. Home Depot and Menards' employees don't even compare to Ace's knowledgeable and friendly staff! Moreover, this particular Ace has CATS in the store who are so cute and will tag along in your cart or shopping basket. Who doesn't love that!? Ace could be slightly more competitive with their pricing (their potting soil is expensive compared to the big box stores), but I am willing to pay more for great service. Also, if you sign up as a member they frequently send out coupons. read more

There are probably six Ace Hardware stores within five miles of my house, but this is the one I patronize. Need a length of pull chain for that light fixture? You can buy it by the yard here. How 'bout a replacement key for the radiator? Yup, got that, too. No matter how obscure my request, they always have what I need in stock, and every clerk in the store knows where to find it. Speaking of which, I typically do the vague mumble thing when store employees ask if I need help. The folks at this Ace seem to have a sixth sense about when to ask me this question; I like to be seen as self-sufficient, but sometimes I just want to get in and out without a long search. No matter when I go in, their staff is always in tune with my attitude of the moment, and step in to assist or stay back and let me do my thing. You can save a bit going to Big Box Home Improvement, but it's more than worth the pocket change you'll save to get the personal attention and focus on the neighborhood these folks'll provide. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for almost 10 years. Having (almost) completed a major overhaul of every room in my house, I have frequented this Ace Hardware almost weekly, and sometimes several times a day. I have patronized them for everything from buying washers to replacing glass in broken windows. Not only is it an incredible feat of physics, planning, and spacial dynamics that they are able to pack the incredible amount of product into this extremely compact space, I have always found them to be attentive and helpful. I am always - and I mean ALWAYS - asked if I need help finding something by the time I have taken a few steps through the door (and I too do the vague mumble about finding it myself.) I have found them friendly, and more important, genuinely helpful. While there have been very few times that I couldn't find a particular hardware piece I need, they almost always have what I need. This is a great resource for our community, and I am thankful to have them in the neighborhood. I don't give 5 stars easily, but these guys have earned it. read more

I have shopped here on a regular basis for the last 10 years. Never again. Treated like a criminal because I didn't have a receipt for an appliance cord I was returning. I intended on buying about $50 worth of merchandise, but the refusal to credit me a return/exchange (not cash) is a big bummer. I have not been treated that way anywhere in the Kingfield or Central neighborhoods at any other shop ever. So much for supporting local hardware stores. read more

We went here to buy some sleds and the selection wasn't the best. We did end up buying one and the price was cheap and it held up okay. My main complaint was while we were in line we changed our mind and wanted to buy a second sled as well. We asked the cashier to wait 1 minute while we got it but she wouldn't wait. So you know what, we just didn't get the 2nd sled so they lost out. Okay it was probably only $10 bucks so I'm sure we didn't put them out of business but it was the principal.... Next year I think we'll try another sled source but I'm sure their hardware is nice. read more

A tip: if one employee can't help you within the first three minutes, find another one and that one will. I guarantee it. And don't worry, you'll be approached by someone as soon as you walk in the door. Sometimes you'll even be approached before you get in the door. Everyone is super friendly but some of them are a little insecure and won't actually say the words "I don't know." So find someone else. read more

ya know I'm all about promoting and using independent local store rather than the big box places. I usually have great experiences at locally owned stores because there is a lot more personal service offered and one on one attention, rather than at the big box places (where you ask someone a question and they look around like "are you talking to me?" then they say " Oh, well i don't know this is not my "area" you need to find someone with the smock that says "Dave" and he can help you.") when I've gone in to the smaller stores and i ask a question, they bring me right to the product i need show me how to use it and make sure that i have all the parts and all my questions answered.... so like usual in supporting local business i went to this ace and was expecting that kind of service..... i went in looking for some lawn bags and it being the first time I'd even been in this store i ask someone at the "middle of the store counter" the guy behind the counter was talking to another worker that was standing, well leaning on the counter... i guess they were not busy that day... so i asked where the bags would be and the only response i got--- isle 3. and then they went back to talking... no hello, how are you, or let me show you were they are, or even have a nice day . i would have appreciated even a finger pointing in the direction of isle 3, but i didn't get one, he just turned his head back around and started talking to the other associate... and i was left with... isle 3. i stood there looking back and forth to see where isle 3 even was.. and went off in search of the bags, i did find them... but i don't think I'll be going back there ever again. I'm glad it's not the ace that is next to my house, it's the one near my moms house so i wont need to go back to this one. read more

I've been coming to this store for years - driving past several others on the way there. They have an extensive rental selection and any little doodad of hoohah you can think of, and six people to tell you where it is and what to do with it. Great paint, high quality tools . . . you get the picture. My loyalty was cemented several years ago when one of their staff walked me through replacing a water heater over about four trips to the store and two phone calls. I love this place. There is so much crammed into this friendly little store. Staff is extremely helpful, knowledgable, and friendly and great at greeting everyone who comes in the door. I've had glass cut, keys copied, rented equipment, and made a ton of odds and ends purchases and all were good experiences. Also, they are dog friendly. Don't post many reviews but I know these guys deserve a great one!!! I love this place!!! It's the best neighborhood hardware store around!! The customer service is EXCEPTIONAL, especially when you consider how you get treated at the big box hardware stores. It's great having them so close for when I just need simple things that I forgot or ran out of or lost for the 100th time (hammers, crow bars, squares, bits, etc). They may not have everything and the prices may be a little higher but I don't mind paying for the convenience, the friendliness, the help and the expertise that comes with going there. They really make me dread going to Home Depot or Menards where I can spend 20 minutes just looking for help!! Plus being able to go pet the stores mascot, a cat named Debbie is probably good for my stress levels when I've been to the store eight times in one day because I keep screwing something up!!! I used to go there. It was an average place, with average service. I went to rent some equipment recently, took it home, spent three hours trying to get the equipment to work. It was the only one they had, otherwise I'd have gone back immediately for a replacement. I finally gave up, took it back and told the clerk about it.It was a case of faulty equipment, not user error. He listened to my complaint and seemed sympathetic. He offered no refund but told me someone would call me the next day. No one called. It was convenient to go there, but there's another one not too much farther away that's average, too. read more

Love this Ace. I've lived in the neighborhood the last three years and this place has been a life saver on so many occasions. Whether I need to pick up a certain type of hardware or paint or cleaning supplies, they have it. It's such a nice alternative than driving further to get something small and simple, and if I'm not sure what exactly I should buy or where something is located, the staff have always been quick to help and pleasant. I appreciate that every time I've come here, the employees actually make eye contact with you and say hello and ask if you need assistance. Even though I'm horribly awkward most of the time, human interaction is nice and I believe essential to a good business. Everything is always clean and well organized, and the whole vibe of the store is welcoming. One other fun plus, they have cats! (Right now they have baby chicks as well)! If you live near by or you're passing through, this is a great store to check out. read more

Everytime I go here, an employee walks me through the hardware area and makes sure that I get everything that I need. You can just buy what you need, too. I bought a piece of glass here the other day and after the carpenter got here to install it we realized it was completely the wrong size. It was a hard repair to schedule and I was irritated. I went back with the glass and was completely taken care of. I was so happy it all worked out because I love my friendly neighborhood hardware store. This ACE hardware sucks...I went there yesterday to drop my window screen as it needs to be fixed. I forgot my wallet at home and the store manager told me that they will fix the window only if I deposit $10. I been there before, i requested manager that I will give my home address and cell phone. But the people SO unfriendly...they will NOT take my word. It is so insulting...what kind of business will they do not trust their customer. I ordered a few glasses at this same store a few months ago, then they of course gave a wrong size of glass..I let it go as everyone makes mistakes...but now I will NEVER go to this store. I went to WELNA Ace hardware and they did not ask for any deposit..just took my window and ask me to pick it up next week...That is what a community store should be like. read more

This will be my Ace Hardware as long as I live in Minneapolis. They helped me out during one of the most stressful days I had last year, and got me through it while being kind the whole time. I had just moved into a home in the area that had been flipped, and all my roommates were gone for the weekend when I fuse blew and lost power to most of my home. It turned out when the home was flipped the electrics were not, so I was dealing with an old fashion fuse box from the 50s. My landlords were not much help since it was the weekend, and the handyman they sent could not figure it out either. The guys at ACE, Michael and Michael in particular were extremely helpful and kind. They even talked on the phone with an electrician to try to figure out which parts I would need. I had to drive back and forth multiple times over the whole day to test out different fuses and during the last trip I ended up locking my keys in my car. By this point my phone was dead and I was crying in the store and the workers at ACE let me charge my phone in the store so I could call someone to get the spare key for my car. Since they helped me narrow down the parts it was a much easier fix when the electrician did come. They really went above and beyond. I've been loyal to this store ever since, and have always been treated warmly. Thank you! read more

I already loved shopping here because even the teenagers who work here seem to have years of knowledge and experience behind their help. In S. Minneapolis, where the houses are old and all have "quirks", that is a 5 star rating in and of itself. But here is why I am compelled to write. I went in a few weeks ago on a spur of the moment decision to build a barre for my at home work-outs. I had a rough idea in mind and dragged my dad with for back-up. The (of course) couldn't be old enough to drink kid who helped us laughed at me but helped me draw up plans and then cut the pvc pipe and fit the whole get-up together (and make additional suggestions to "improve" my design). I walked out with a fully functional, collapsible for storage, $40 ballet barre. That's the price of 2 barre classes. Awesome. Now...if only the staff could actually force me to get off my you know what and use my little creation more often! read more
