Poor customer service, staffing and management. Waited 1.5 hours on a Saturday to make a purchase. No one available in the department I needed assistance. Walked around 45 minutes and finally found someone to radio and find out when someone wd be available. Person working in the dept was "pulling cabinets" for an order and was not available. for another 30 minutes. Never was informed prior. Person pulling cabinets was only person working and no one else was available. Stumbled on Manager who had very few answers so wrote a letter to Guest Services. They completely ignored my concerns and said "sorry they did not meet my expectations"? Not my expecations, but what other customer wd accept this. No mention of compensation or follow up. My purchase was $551.00, which should include prompt, professional customer service, which they failed to deliver. Revenue, not professional service is their intent, but long term Menards will suffer from this. read more

Love this store definitely offers more than just tools. You can find dog food here, candy and even a sweatshirt or too. But on the serious side I do enjoy shopping here. The prices are very competitive and you do always find a friend employee willing to help. The quality is great and everything is stocked here. I Recently had the WORST Customer service from the Menards General Manager (Bob F) at the Clybourne location in Chicago. I purchased a patio door in September 2022, I was promised a delivery date of 10/18/2022. The door was delivered on 12/10/2022 and our contractor couldn't wait and started on other projects. In July 2023 the contractors return to finish the work in our home and discovered that Menards sent us the wrong size door. When I placed the order at Menards, I provided Sales Rep with all of the notes from our contractor with the measurement of the door. When the door arrived in December of 2022, we never opened the box trusting that Menards had delivered the correct size door. When I took this to a supervisor at the store, he took all of my information and arranged to have to door picked up at my expense. The next day I got a call from the General Manager (Bob F) stating he was not going to refund my money or take the door back because it was a special order. I reminded him the door was a special order just not the door I ordered. He finally agreed to give me store credit for more the $800.00 to which I told him I would be contacting the corporate offices. Worst Customer Service ever. read more

this is directed at Corporate and the administrator of the "11%" rebate. I specifically shopped Menards for the high ticket items while preparing my house for sale and bought early so I could get then rebates before moving to and area without Menards stores. It has now been over 3, almost 4 months later, I have moved and yet still no rebates (I'm talking several hundred dollars not chump change). without the rebates, I would have gotten a better deal elsewhere. I was looking for a cordless drill. Found a great deal Two pack drill for $99. I ask an attendant to verify, turned out they had the wrong tag over the regular price of $149. Talked to a manager about honoring the sale price, as that was a misrepresentation of the true price. He wouldn't budge, pretty much an "oh well" attitude and insinuating that I changed prices. Even more insulting. If he looked at his security camera, he could have seen none of his words were true. My husband have enjoyed coming here for years, never felt so disrespected. Unfortunately does not accept TVDL (Temporary Visitors Drivers License) to rent out a pick up truck. It is clearly a drivers license issued by the secretary of state. Had a credit card for the $300 deposit, insurance, and well the TVDL. They should def consider accepting them. Had to drive down to Home depot and thank god they were able to take care of us. read more

This place will give you wood. I used to think all they were good for was lumber. And yes they have enough wood to make a beaver berg. But that's not my bag. So howcomes I'm so gaga for Menard's? Well I'm glad you asked, reader, since Menard's is so much more- in fact a general store! Hugeee selection of candy. Obscure kinds and great variety all at a terrific price. Infinity kinds of chips, pretzels, nuts. Tons of storage bins and carts. Oh and the garden area is terrif! The lighting fixtures for indoor and out are myriad and eclectic. The selection of pet food and accessories are phenomenal. For instance, their Greenies are much less expensive than anywhere else. I also found some dog biscuits on clearance for .89 cents!! And my dog loves them! Ha, I never thought a home improvement store would become a fave. I'm not that domestic or handy. However...Everytime I shop here I hear my family silently chanting "one of us, one of us!" read more

For me, Menard's is the answer to the Hell of Home Depot. So if you need to go buy home improvement items and Home Depot is on your list...maybe check this first because it'll be more enjoyable, less chaotic/overwhelming and you'll probably still find what you need. For one, they have snacks. And DVDs, if you might need some. Even some random "work" apparel like gloves and hats and strange leggings, etc. It keeps me entertained when my super/landlord (husband) is looking for things like an axe, of which I have no interest. However, when you are waiting for that person and they come running down the aisle with an axe almost as tall as they are, it is pretty amusing. (not recommended). Also, you are much less likely to get killed in the parking lot. So there you go...need more reasons to go to Menard's? Did I not just mention they have a really robust supply of snacks and sodas? Don't buy any outdoor power equipment(lawn mowers) there. Brought a faulty lawn edger back the next day and was told to call Briggs and Stratton. Briggs sends you over to a lawn equipment service center which is usually a dealer who will treat you like dirt. The amount of time wasted with assembly, phone calls and driving to a service center would be worth hundreds of dollars at minimum wage. Menards lost a customer for life read more

This was my first trip to Menard's and I was looking for a dual window fan, they had 2 different brands one for $25 and a $40 one. Online it said they had 6 of the more expensive ones and 30 of the one that cost less. And figured this would just be a quick trip to pick up the one in my price range. I found the section where they had the fans quite easily, they had all of the $40 fans on the shelf but none of the $25 dual fans, which I thought was odd since the site said they had 30 of them in stock. I wandered up and down the aisles for a while to make sure they weren't on an end or in a display, no luck. I asked someone, he said they had them in stock and would be bringing some down if I didn't mind waiting, so I wandered around some more. About 15 - 20 minutes later they still hadn't stocked the shelf so I went to one of the registers and asked the cashier if they could just bring one down so I could pay for it and leave, she called a manager and he talked to another person who was supposed to bring it down. Now that was 4 people, to my knowledge, involved with this, they were all polite. But I waited another 10 - 15 minutes, until the cashier that I spoke with had to go on break and I waited a few minutes more. Not including the amount of time I wandered around before asking anyone, I waited over 30 minutes for four people to work on bringing down an item their site said they had plenty of in stock at the store, they just weren't on the shelf. I feel duped, because if it's not on the shelf where a customer can easily access it themselves then they don't have it. I left without purchasing the fan. If I'm going to be forced to buy something out of my price range, I'll spend my money someplace else. I will not be back or even look at their website again. read more

I came in here for one thing: a window air conditioner seal. I was thinking that it would be a quick easy trip right? I think not. We went here a little later in the evening and we headed right to the window air conditioners. You would think that this is a logical place to find the seals, right? I think not. After looking around for a while, we we not sure where they may have been keeping them if they had them at all. We started looking for someone to ask. You would think that a store this size that there would be someone around somewhere to answer our question right? I think not. My husband and I have been taking on home projects to improve our condo. We have VERY little storage for our place. We were able to put 2 storage sheds on our deck to help with this problem. We had a front hall closet holding miscellaneous crap along with our coats. We came up with an idea of turning this crap closet into a pantry for bulk food items (Costco trips), paper towels, TP etc. We tried getting the supplies needed to mount wire shelves into our closet. Menard's had great visuals showing what you need to get the job done. Unfortunately they were OUT of stock on most of the items we needed. Trying to figure out what will work for 45 minutes with no employees to be around to give us a hand. My husband even went searching for help with no luck. We left frustrated and empty handed. I hate Menards. I fucking HATE Menards. I brought in a sale paper with a few items circled. They had NONE of the items. Not only that, but whenever I asked someone to point me in the direction of said items that I wanted, they sent me in the wrong direction! I wanted a set of bowls and the woman told me to look in plumbing. Um...wow. I found it a bit odd that they also had a section with seats and vending machines; after the 'odd' feeling passed, I found it a bit disgusting. Empty pizza boxes and cups were strewn about the tables. AND -- the vending machine stole my money! I bought a thermos here and after using it a few times, it started to stink. Kitchen cabinets and counters are not best quality and staff in that department is not expert in kitchen design. Staff is pleasant and tries. Free parking in lot. Has wreaths and garlands at Christmas time, but only one shipment. If you don't get it when you see it, you're out of luck. read more

There are two stores that I looked down upon and scorned as an adolescent, but now love and appreciate as an adult: Menard's and Aldi. The staff at Menard's is hand's away more knowledgeable then the people at How me Depot. They have a much, much better selection, and much better prices. Me: "If they have oscillating fans, they automatically get 5 stars." So yeah, the oscillating fan in my bedroom that distributes that delicious air conditioned air suddenly stopped oscillating. Henceforth, I needed a fan that DID oscillate air so I didn't suffocate in my sleep. But. It's the second day this year it's been hot. So OF COURSE the city is in a panic. Target was sold out. Home Depot was sold out. I was sad. Then superstar Paige W suggested Menards. Heck yeah! I fought traffic to get there singing, "save big money at Menard's!" the whole way. We entered. I noted it smelled like Orscheln's. (Maybe that's a Missouri thing.) Paige spotted the fans. I ignored her while I spotted an entire row of nothing but yummy barbecue sauce. I was amazed at their selection. Who knew Menard's carried this stuff?! (And I totally picked up some A&W root beer BBQ sauce - um, hello, genius?!) So back to the fans. THEY HAVE FANS! Lots of fans! I got the second to last tall oscillating fan, AND it was cheaper than they were at Target and Home Depot. SCORE. The cashier was nice. The security guy at the door who checked our receipt? I've been shopping here for about 7 years, since I moved in the neighborhood. It's the closest hardware store to me and the location is convenient, but apart from that it's rare to have a pleasant shopping experience. In particular the lumber department is always frustrating and the people who work there seems to make it a point to frustrate you. If you think you can buy something online, drive to the lumberyard, show your receipt and pick up your things you would be mistaken with this place. There is ALWAYS something wrong and most often than not you get to drive around 2-3 times between the lumber yard and the general parking. When they started enforcing draconian measures including not let young people in the store and force people with medical conditions to wear masks or be refused service I decided to write the review. Every big chain has it's issues and every store is different, but on principle I will no longer spend any of my money here. read more

You know how easy it is to spend $300 at a Target, when you only meant to buy cat food? Menard's is the same kind of dangerous. Menard's carries a crazy amount of items outside the definition of hardware. Oh sure, you can find all the fixtures and Philips head screwdrivers and plumbing supplies you want here, and more. Menard's seems to have every little item that people in John Deere hats and flannel shirts could dream of owning. If you are the average Chicagoan, living in a relatively small space with non-handyman needs, your credit card may be in deep peril when you enter this store. It happened to me, and I am, to all intents and purposes, a semi-normal Chicago female, in an apartment with cats. I ran out of light bulbs. Not a crisis, right? Little did I know how complicated it would be to buy a light bulb, especially at Menard's. Too much choice, too much technology. Do I want LED? Or do I want the other kind, the twisty ones that replaced incandescents? Do I want bright glow, or do I want something with a soft muted glow? Did you know you can buy light bulbs that are designed to work with dimmers? Finally, armed with a 4-pack of 60-watt LED lamps, I made the mistake of glancing at the aisle signs hanging from the ceiling. Menard's has pet supplies? Score -- Tidy Cat litter 20-pound tubs cost almost a dollar less than Mariano's or PetSmart! Wait, now I need to go get a cart. Going down a different aisle back towards Pet Supplies, I saw gallons of white vinegar. $2 each! White vinegar is so hidden at grocery stores, I haven't even bothered spending the time to look, and now Menard's has gallons and gallons right along the aisle! Put gallon of white vinegar in cart. On to pet supplies for two tubs of kitty litter. Gee, what else does this store have? Household cleaners. . . suet to attract birds you can hang outside your window. . . step stools. . . I snapped to my senses when I realized how heavy the cart had become. Time to check out. Hey, not bad! I came in under $100! Not bad when all I wanted to buy was light bulbs! Friends, this store can tempt you and run up your credit card charges. It is the apartment-dweller's, home-owner's, handyman's street of dreams. I shop a lot at this Menards and I prefer it over Home Depot. As others have mentioned, you stand a better chance of finding a live body to show you where the item you need is located and who will actually know something about the DIY project you are attempting. Home Depot has a better selection of obscure hard-to-find items. But the pricing on brand name items will usually be lower at Menards. I've noticed that Home Depot always carries one version of a product and its a brand name. Some things (like tools) I want the brand name but for other items I want the cheapest. The biggest plus for me is that the check out lines are usually quicker. They usually are pretty good at opening up cashiers when the lines are long compared to Home Depot which will have one cashier open and force you to use the self service checkout where there always are customers who have problems. I have been going to Menard's since I first got to Chicago. I love it. Where else can you get a vegetable peeler, work gloves, a new toilet, and a box of Little Debbie snack cakes? The staff is always helpful, though sometime elusive, but once I get one they know where anything is in the store. I get everything from crown moulding to insulation here. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5 star rating is the fact that they don't take American Express, and I buy a lot of stuff for work there. I always recommend it to a friend. read more

Service is FAR better than Home Depot and even though it is a warehouse it feels more welcoming than the HD. You have to love the outside lumber yard and they are always willing to help. They keep the inside of the store organized and the parking lot always appears to be clean in the summer or winter. read more

This Menards is close to my house, so i go there a lot out of default. I wish it were better and it has so much potential. The "garden center" is a tiny greenhouse at the end of the lot and it's no where near the store, so that's really inconvenient as you have to go through a cashier line twice and they aren't too keen on holding your plants for you while to trudge back to the store to buy your pots/dirt...as the "garden center" has only plants and no soil or pots. Their sign says they will open checkouts when there are more than two people in line. Not true. I bought a grill there last month and they were really helpful and got me the right person to help me. Also, they have the biggest selection of grilling accessories I have seen anywhere around in the big box stores. I also scored a great deal on a patio umbrella for 30 bucks as it was returned without a box. Bummed they don't carry orchid plant food. Weird, right? read more

I just needed 12 red paver bricks, which Home Depot does not carry. Getting 12 bricks in an empty store should not be a process that takes an hour. But it was. Admittedly, I'm a Home Depot kind of gal, so I'm used to everything being there on floor, ready to load in a cart and cut to size. Menard's has a different system--write down what you need, have a sales associate ring you up, and then drive around back to the secure lumber yard to load your car. This would be an amazing system if, say, you needed enough materials to build a house. But when you need 12 bricks, it's annoying as hell. And perhaps its because I was there at 9pm on a Friday night (yeah I'm awesome like that), but I was a bit creeped out by the whole thing--the security guard inspecting your ticket, and then inspecting your trunk with its contents on the way out of the yard. I felt like I was entering prison. So why the 3 stars then? Well, it's cheap (granted, bricks are cheap in general). And if you don't have to use the lumber yard, then you don't run into these inconveniences. Sales associates were generally easy to find (way easier than HD). read more

They have some strange stuff but ya know, I will pick Menards every single time over Home Desperate. I come to this Menard's at least once a month to pick up something for work, for myself or just to browse. I've hardly ever been let down after a trip to Menard's. The customer service is solid (attentive, not pushy, unlike Home Depot's complete lack of customer service). The lumber yard is fantastic. They have everything a hobby woodworker needs and at very reasonable prices... like with all lumber, the prices fluctuate with the market but the boards I've bought there have always been the cheapest around and in excellent condition. Also, the light bulb selection is out of this world! I know that is a really random compliment for a hardware store but nowhere else have I found a 24 pack of 100 watt light bulbs for under ten bucks! Or a two-pack of 75 watt halogen floods for just under eleven! Screaming deals! The home remodeling, paint and outdoor sections beat the Home Depot's any day of the week. Utility shelving? Cheap, and lots of it! Hardware? You want it, they got it! They still have bargain bins for random items... I think I once picked up six hinges for like two bucks. The missing star is due to the tool selection. It leaves a little to be desired. I hate to say it but the Home Depot on North Ave. has a far superior tool selection. It really kills me to say that, actually. But for everything else, from work gloves to BBQ sauce, there is no better place than Menard's.
