The chicken is tender and perfectly seasoned. The cabbage tasted fresh and perfectly seasoned as well. The mac and cheese is so yummy and buttery. My friend ordered meat loaf, mashed potatoes, corn and caramel cake. The meatloaf is just like grandmama made it with the ketchup on top. The mashed potatoes were creamy and amazing, and they made the corn to perfection. I knew they were good and hard-working people when we forgot to carry out the caramel cake and the owner offered to bring it out to us. 49 Cents more valuable than rapper Fitty, this is a cute soul food shop that decided not to give me any soul food this time. I desperately wanted to try this place again because it's been so long, but they decided to close up really early on Columbus Day. I called earlier and asked and they said they'd be open for several hours. 30 min later - boom. Done. I got here still during the lunch hour and they had locked the doors and I saw a bunch of people eating inside a bunch of food and I don't think it would have been that difficult to just slap me up a portion of smothered pork chop or whatever they had - even some leftovers would have been fine. I wanted Mac and cheese but they were sold out at 1pm which I though was a little off for a soul place, there should be enough Mac and cheese for the whole day. They were also out of mashed potatoes. So instead, I got mixed greens and corn. Mixed greens were tender and seasoned. Corn was just corn. Honey gold wings: they are HUGE!!! I didn't realize I was getting full size wings when I ordered. I love their honey gold sauce. They give you extra too so you can really dip your chicken in it after you eat the skin. It wasn't the crispiest chicken but I enjoyed it nonetheless. This chicken spot was pretty good. It was right next to the civil rights museum. The restaurant was clean but the wait for food was super long and we were the only people in the restaurant. The food came out extremely fresh and hot. I ordered two thighs, greens, yams, and Mac and cheese. We also got banana pudding to split. I felt that the food was kind of expensive and that it could have been a little cheaper. Overall it was pretty good. The best part was the hot sauce by far. I saw all sides were now $3-5 each, so I opted in to get the Blackened Salmon for $14.99(NO SIDES INCLUDED) only a strip of salmon. I gave the restaurant only 4 stars because after placing, paying, and waiting about 15 minutes for my order I was informed that they out of yams. I had already paid for my order, waited on it, but still did not get what I ordered. So far 99 cent soul food express has been my favorite experience in Memphis. Be prepared to wait as they do take their time with food preparation but for some reason when you see the food you instantly don't mind waiting. Also make sure to grab you one of those Obama drinks...we call them half and half back east but I'm cool with calling them Obama lol. I actually came back just to grab one after touring the museum. Tried the catfish, wings, and souther dressing (my favorite of them all) and everything was perfect. If you have time call your order in...if not grab a seat and wait but don't feel too bad because the food is fresh and worth the wait. What a wonderful surprise. We just finished a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum and were in search of a nearby lunch. Just doors away from the museum is 99 Cent. This is a very casual, order at the counter, restaurant. I chose the crispy fried chicken breast and some simple sides. My traveling friend opted for the "wet chicken" in a light gravy. I received a HUGE boneless crispy, juicy chicken breast. While my crispy chicken breast was somewhat overly salted (possibly over-brined), it was some of the juiciest chicken I have ever enjoyed encased in a delicious crispy coating that was not at all greasy. Even with the slightly salty meat, this chicken was outstanding. The sides of cole slaw and potato salad were delicious. The string beans were disappointing, tasting canned, perhaps. We left this restaurant remarking to each other that this was a wonderful surprise. It is very unassuming on the outside and looks quite modest with a name that might say "cheap food", but our food was excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially if you are in the area around the National Civil Rights Museum and the Blues Museum. read more

Should be 99 Cent Soul SIDES Express. Everything in my first review is still true. Still a decent lunch spot for the value. But when I can expect (every time) slow service, waiting for the meats to cook, smaller side portions, sometimes undercooked chicken, I'm now gonna drop 2 stars. Now months go by before I come back & I have the same experience. The cook has the "gift of gab." I really enjoy getting to know people I interact with, but I hate to see him hold up the line in conversation over the last Dallas Cowboys game when folks have a limited lunch time. There was no fry batter on it. Look like it had been grilled. Mac n cheese was pretty good. Greens tasted ok but had lots of stems so probably came out of a can. You walk in, order the pre-cooked food that's like a buffet style (except the food is behind the glass and you tell the staff what you want from the menu on the wall, and he'll get it for you). When we were there few days ago, he was the only one working at front. He's getting your food, and he's also the cashier. This can be slow, since he has to scoop the food out from the warmer serving bowl one dish at a time. Total time spent for the four of us to order the food the pay: 20-25 min. I ordered a bottled water and I mentioned to the staff the water wasn't there. So that was an item I got room temperature and drank it on ice. I had to wait about 13 minutes for my chicken wing, but that was OK. Overall the food is very good, but they have a lot of minor bugs to work out. The best kept secret and yet I want to tell the world!! I found the 99 Cent Soul Food Express while planning my trip to Memphis. I had a specific goal of supporting black owned businesses. We went to another place her somewhere buys of a two hour wait. No way!! We headed to this location. The location is cute and quaint. I love the colors on the outside very inviting. Inside was good seating and a great atmosphere. I love the interior decor and assortment of chandeliers all over. Now I'm not quite sure why they are called the 99 Cent Soul Food Express. That much in there that's $.99 unless you plan to eat cornbread. But don't let that distract her focus. The food is fantastic! And I was with a small group. We each ordered something different had the joy of sampling lots of things. Somethings were readily available like a cafeteria style offering. Other things I catfish were freshly fried which we most appreciate it! EVERYTHING was well seasoned. The service was exceptionally friendly we had a great time laughing with the staff. I did not hesitate to tell many others about our wonderful experience. I can't say enough nice things about this establishment.
