Being a vegan, I'm always concerned about a pizza joint because I cannot always find a vegan dish; however, the great server pointed out the vegetarian and vegan page on the menu. Besides having a vegan sandwich, I could build my own pizza to include vegan cheese. Although the wait was longer than I would have liked, it was well worth it. This was my first time going to Mellow Mushroom and I was very impressed! I tried the vegan pizza (my first vegan pizza from a restaurant), and it was perfect. The vegan cheese was amazing, it had good texture and tasted just like the real thing! My husband had a regular hand tossed cheese pizza and cheese sticks and loved it. The waitress was pretty nice but could have made more of an effort to be nice and check on us more often to refill drinks etc... overall I would recommend checking them out. read more

So for a chain pizza restaurant this place is not bad. I have eaten here multiple times but recently ate here about a week ago. If I had reviewed it before last time, I probably would have given it 3 stars... but I think they must have recently changed their gluten free pizza crust and it's so much better!! I have to eat gluten free (celiac) and I've tried a lot of gf pizzas. This is one of the better crusts I've had! We stopped into the Mellow Mushroom after a long hike at Eno River. I was starving when we got there and we took a seat outside since we had our pup with us. Our server came over and introduced herself but then never came back. When my stomach started to turn on the rest of my body, I decided to go in and find someone. Another server started helping us right away and then our original server came out and apologized explaining that she had forgotten about us. I know that kind of thing happens so it wasn't a big deal, especially because once our food was put in it came out quickly. We got the pretzels which were good but a little too buttery and then a pizza with pepperoni and black olives. Overall, I enjoy the Mellow Mushroom's pizza but I'm never super impressed. I will definitely go back to the Mellow Mushroom since it's standard ok pizza but it's definitely not someplace that I crave. read more

Unfortunately rude host staff. Love Mellow Mushroom but not happy about my short visit in which we were given a wait time of 15 minutes and were never seated. While waiting outside in the outdoor seating (which I'm almost sure our hostess saw us go to wait), apparently there software system went down and they "closed" the restaurant, giving us no notice. We waited 30 minutes and decided to go ask about our place in line. We were greeted by a hostess who told us they were closed and no apology was made. Will not be returning, sadly. read more

I've lived away from Mellow Mushroom for a few years and have had cravings for their pizza on the reg. On our most recent trip we were told it'd be a 45-minute wait for a table. We saw some seats at the bar so we opted for that instead. The service from the bartender was excellent and the food arrived very quickly. Delicious as always. I've lived in (well, near, at least) the Triangle my whole life...and I've only had Mellow Mushroom pizza once. And honestly, I wasn't impressed. I had a couple slices of the Mighty Meaty and the Hawaiian, and they really both tasted like Papa John's to me - and I'm not a big fan of Papa John's. It wasn't bad per se, but it was a far cry from what I had come to expect based on the praise heaped upon it by many. I just felt like I really wasn't missing anything those first 29 years. So I was looking forward to this trip to mellow mushroom bc I've heard such good things, but I must say that I was not impressed. We came to the restaurant before going to a baseball game-I expected it to be busier than it was. So I joined my part and the serve was quick to come and take my drink order. We ordered two pizzas, was very surprised that our server was unable to get the order correct. Our server, Juliette wasn't the one to bring out our food, so we felt bad having to tell the other girl that the order was wrong! She came with two small pizzas and we one was supposed to be a medium! So we sent the woman back with the one pizza and she returned a few minutes later and gave us the pizza-just cheese and mushroom-although we didn't get very many mushrooms on it for $2 extra that we paid for them! We were told that they were making a second pizza with the same toppings and it would be out soon. As for the pizza itself, eh, it was ok. The three of us ate all three of the small pizzas. When the time came for our check to be dropped off, I was kind of surprised at how our server came to check and see if we were ready for her to get the bill-I was the only person at the table when she came to check and my friend hadn't even looked at it before he stepped away to use the restroom. Our server approached the table didn't say anything to me, moved my friends sunglasses off of the check thing and flipped it over at which I finally spoke up and said the bill wasn't ready. Great pizza, great salads - it's hard to go wrong here. I frequented the Chapel Hill location so I was sad to hear that it closed recently. I checked out this location after a Bulls game and was pleased to see that the quality of the food has continued to this space. The decor is... interesting, but amusing. The best part of this place is the pizza crust... wow. Might be my favorite crust ever. Our waiter was a little "spacy" but very nice and got us what we needed. Plus, it's almost the kind of waiter you want at 'Shroom. I've been to the Asheville and Boone (can we say contact buzz?) locations as well, and those were just as tasty. read more

I have been there tree times. Never again. The food was fair but I've had better. The service was reallllllly poor. First visit - we were sitting outside and had our drinks and finished our appetizers. After a few mins we saw our waitress walking across the street, obviously leaving. We waited 10 mins or so and finally one of our group went to the host stand, where she and two waits were chatting. After a lot of finger pointing, one said "we'll find out". We waited another 10 mins before a waitress came and said our food would be right out - but we waited another 15 mins. Visit two - service was slow but there was a very large table so I understand. When our food did come, they were one dinner short. Everyone else was almost done when it appeared. Visit three - ordered appetizers. They brought us appetizers we didn't order, so back to the kitchen. We waited....finally our meals came, no appetizers ever. This restaurant obviously has some management and staff training problems both in the front and back ends. As I said, never again. read more

Two Words: Vegan Cheese. If you require vegan cheese to enjoy a pizza, they have it here! You can order it on any pizza. This is a must for me at pizza places, and only a couple places offer it. As far as the pizza goes - I really like it. Pizza is a very personal thing for each person, thickness of crust, sauce, everything varies person to person on taste, so I respect that, but I think this place is definitely worth a try - see if this is your idea of pizza! I personally love the thick, tasty crust. They have a really fun variety of toppings - the potato pizza with bacon, chives, and ranch is amazing (you can order the sour cream on the side if you're like me and ordering vegan cheese!!) I found a regional menu with a pita something or other on it so I asked if I could have all of those toppings on a small pizza. I think this is my new favorite location! Since we live in Carrboro, we usually frequent the Chapel Hill MM, which I still really like. This one though is right by the durham Bulls stadium, and is in such a cool setting, fountains galore! Obviously I love their food. Try their pretzels, they're the best! You get large soft pretzels, I personally loved the garlic one dipped in mustard. The pies are great too. Bayou Bleu and Philosophers Pie make my tummy happy. They have tons of outdoor seating, a decent beer selection, and great waiters and waitresses! We'll totally be back! read more

This place is a favorite to take out of town guests. Its located on the tobacco campus, which in my mind, is the place to see in downtown durham. The parking is ample and free and the walk is pleasant. The historical aspect of the campus is intriguing. Mellow mushroom sells large, interesting pizzas with unusual toppings. My favorite pizza is the holy shitake that comes with a garlic aioli and garlic base. There are a few different types of mushrooms. The crust is really what makes the pizza here something to write home about. Sit outside if you can, its hard to get too much of what the tobacco campus has to offer. read more
