This was a weird experience in terms of service. We went on a Sunday around noon. The place was packed with families. I think we (just two of us) scored the last table for awhile. Our server was initially prompt and took our drink orders. I inquired about the soup of the day and was given two options. I thanked our server for answering my question. She said, "So, do you want soup then?" Uh - not really sure what I want as we are just looking at the menu and not ordering yet. My date ordered a beer and a glass of water. I requested a soda. The soda and water came out in a timely fashion. I have no idea how long the beer took. Somewhere between five to ten minutes (and it was served in a bottle so why would it take so long?). I don't think this wait for a beer was due to our server. We were near the bar, and she kept going back to the bar. To me, it looked like she was trying to get the beer. I'm guessing the bartender was a bit slow here. My date ordered a large pepperoni pizza. I ordered half a Cesar salad and half of a sub (avocado). The salad was the size of what I thought the large should be leaving me no room to eat my sandwich. The salad was excellent. I found the lettuce to be fresh, and there was plenty of cheese and dressing. The cheese was shaved Parmesan - and it was great. The salad was around 5-6.00 so it was an excellent value. The sandwich was also good (I had a few bites) and also an excellent value - about the same price as the salad. I was just to full to eat it. I thought half a sandwich and half a salad would make for a full meal, but they could both be eaten as meals in and of themselves. My date was very happy with his pizza. It appeared to be perfectly cooked. I lowered the overall rating because of the service. Service was sometimes prompt and sometimes took forever. I think my server may have had more going on than she could reasonably handle. Once tables started to leave she got a bit better. It happens. We had to wait a very long time to get the food. I understand that the place was busy, but I had to wait about 15 minutes just to get my salad. That seems a bit much. read more

I've been to this location probably a dozen times or more, and I always enjoy it. This past Friday night was no exception. My husband and I arrived a little after 7pm and there was a 20 minute wait. I like that the hostess takes your phone number and texts you when your table is ready; it cuts down on a lot of the commotion and noise and you can easily see how many tables are in front of you. I think our wait ended up being closer to 15 minutes, which wasn't bad at all for a Friday evening, especially when there was also a DPAC event going on. My husband later commented on what a nice crowd there was there, how it felt like a good representation of Durham, with lots of different races and ages together. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, near the bar. Service was pretty good at first, but our waitress became MIA once the food arrived. I think that bartenders service those back tables, so I realize she was also busy with the bar, but it would have been nice to have drinks refilled without us having to leave our seats. Anyway, we ordered two small pizzas - the Pacific Rim (minus jalapeno) and the Mel Corleone. Both were great! I love the flavor of the dough, which I think has the right amount of chewiness, and their pizza sauce is robust and not too sweet. I really liked the ham and carmalized onions on the Pacific Rim. Other favorite menu items are their magic mushroom soup and the Mighty Meaty pizza. The pizza is pretty yummy reheated for lunch the next day, too! read more

Came here today for an early dinner, so it wasn't busy at all. Staff was courteous, friendly, and respectful. And they can be gluten-free! Bonus, if you're on any primal/paleo diet :) We ordered: -Chicken wings in Jerk sauce: I wanted to tried the jerk sauce here because the only other time I've had jerk is at Buffalo Wild Wings, and I was sorely disappointed with the BWW sauce. One waiter described it as "tamarind and black pepper." Well, I love tamarind and it's sourness, so can't go wrong. The wings came out delicious! They were piping hot and covered in this delicious jerk sauce. Mmmm... I'm drooling thinking about them! I would totally come back here just for these wings. -Buffalo Chicken pizza (gluten free aka thin crust): This pizza was disappointing compared to the wings. Maybe it was because my mouth was already flaming from the wings, but this pizza was so, so dry. It didn't taste like anything either. Definitely did not taste like a pizza. My bf claimed it tasted like "an open-faced sandwich." I thought it tasted like chicken and cheese with some buffalo sauce on crackers. Disappointing. I was EXTREMELY thirsty after this meal too. There was either a lot of salt or msg, and I'm guessing it's the former. Either way, not a good sign... I'll be back though, next time I'm in Raleigh, and maybe I'll have better luck with another kind of pizza :) Recommended! read more

This was my first visit to this location. There were only two or three other tables at the time we went (it was around dinner time). The seating area was clean. The room was dimly lit and there were plenty of tvs showing different games. The waitress was friendly and helpful. My friends and I each ordered a different pizza. I asked the waitress to surprise me and she brought out a Cesar salad pizza. It was definitely interesting and the first time I've had a pizza of that kind. It was pretty good. Not sure if I would order it again though. Dessert was really good. We shared a psychedelic cookie. All the food came out in an acceptable amount of time (although not as quickly as I expected from it being so quiet). Wanted to go to Mellow Mushroom 6:15PM on June 25th before a Durham Bulls game. To our dismay, we were met with so many dirty tables outside we started to turn around. However in the past the food's been so good that we decided to go inside. Inside was a little better but no one greeted us to take us to a seat. We left to go to Tylers. Who doesn't love Mellow Mushroom?!?! This particular one has a great location just next to a parking garage that's free for two hours, and also convenient to all of the shops in the complex. As an out-of-towner it was kind of hard for me to find until I saw the mushroom sculpture. Just know that it's on the very end. The service at this place was average and the pizza was fantastic as always. We sat near the bar and had no trouble with food, drinks, or conversation. I've had varying experiences at different Mellow Mushrooms, but this one was a very good experience. Highly recommend! read more

Prices are a little higher than most pizza joints, but you get what you pay for. Really, the only negative we had was that the child's high chair strap was broken. Food is always delicious with a variety of fun, flavorful interesting specialty pizzas. I've never tried one I didn't love. My daughter and I went yesterday and had an issue with an old Groupon. It wasn't MM's fault at all, but the manager took care of it. That's good business!! The food was great but it would have been better if it was still warm when it got to our table. Our server spent the majority of her time flirting with one of the cooks to the point where we saw our food just sitting in the window getting cold. Mind you, our food is getting cold in the window and she hadn't even brought our drinks out due to the fact that she was soooo busy entertaining one of the cooks. We had to stop another server that was walking by and ask if she could bring our food out since we were watching it in the window. When our server finally appeared we respectfully asked for our drinks but she seemed so bothered by us. It's very unfortunate because my fiancé and I met working in the restaurant industry while in college. We respect our servers so much especially now that they are on the frontlines like we are as healthcare workers. On this particular night we were doing the "tip the bill" challenge to help out our server due to the hard times with covid. The wait wasn't bad for a busy Saturday night before an event at Dpac. About 20-25 minutes. We got to our table and was greeted by Paige! She was amazing! So friendly and awesome at suggestions. We got pretzel bites for an app and then a free Caesar salad for checking in. Then we shared a thin crust pepperoni pizza and it was all amazing. The beer cheese for the pretzels was so good. Went on a casual date here on a Monday night and was very pleased! My boyfriend loved their beer selection, which was a nice start to the evening-- he enjoyed the Duck Rabbit Milk Stout. We ordered the Mighty Meaty and it came out very quickly and very deliciously. I highly recommend it, especially if you like bacon (whole strips on pizza? yes please!). Our waitress was really pleasant and attentive, and it was a really nice experience! Note: I've been to several MMs throughout NC and this one definitely sticks out as being less chill/divey and more bougie. Not bad or good, just interesting to note. Our first visit to a Mellow Mushroom and it didn't disappoint. We had the pretzel appetizer, a specialty pizza of steak and pineapple, and a few kids meals - mac n cheese and meatballs. Pizza was tasty and price wasn't too bad. Service was a little slow, but overall we were pleased. Overall, Mellow Mushroom is wonderful, but as someone with a gluten allergy, I have to say, their gluten-free crust isn't amazing. Kind of mushy and grainy. My husband and I have been to a couple different locations so we aren't new to it. The food here was delicious and cooked perfectly. What made this experience so much better was our server Ryan. He was outgoing and friendly. He brought us refills without us even having to ask. There was a perfect amount of time between his check-ins with us as well. Hoagies are great, pizza is less fantastic than it used to be. This location has an unfortunate habit of allowing streams of people exiting the Durham Bulls games to waltz right across the outside patio, right by your table. Pretty distracting from a meal and time with friends. Under new ownership, ther is no more soy cheese so vegans can't enjoy Mellow Mushroom pizza anymore, which is unfortunate. Being a vegan, I'm always concerned about a pizza joint because I cannot always find a vegan dish; however, the great server pointed out the vegetarian and vegan page on the menu. This was my first time going to Mellow Mushroom and I was very impressed! I tried the vegan pizza (my first vegan pizza from a restaurant), and it was perfect. The vegan cheese was amazing, it had good texture and tasted just like the real thing! My husband had a regular hand tossed cheese pizza and cheese sticks and loved it. The waitress was pretty nice but could have made more of an effort to be nice and check on us more often to refill drinks etc... overall I would recommend checking them out. read more

I really liked the vibe of this place. The decor is really cool and the hostess was pleasant. We didn't have to wait long for a table even though we went on a friday night. Our friendly waitress dropped our drinks off and we ordered our pizzas. The choice of pizza itself was vast and I was a little surprised but their toppings were quite interesting. The crust was great, a nice middle ground between thin new york crust and chicago deep dish. And we had plenty of left overs for the next day! I left mellow mushroom stuffed and happy. So happy to get some decent gluten-free and celiac safe pizza! Make sure to tell them if you have an allergy so they give you a CC safe plate. For you lucky gluten eaters, I used to eat giant calzones and pretzels here and they were always delicious. I've had issues on different days with super slow service (45 mins for a sandwich?), but other times they are just fine. They also have a server or two who seems to be having a perpetually bad day and this can really ruin your dining experience and turn what should take an hour into two or three... While waiting outside in the outdoor seating (which I'm almost sure our hostess saw us go to wait), apparently there software system went down and they "closed" the restaurant, giving us no notice.
