So the stars kind of make this harsh, and I get that, but I have my reasons. First, service, was actually pretty good. We had reservations and they sat us promptly at a cool table in the back patio. Ambience was good it was a perfect weather night. Ordered martinis (very good here), and some wine. Appetizers were delish: Caesar salad, calamari, the bruschetta. All were very good. For mains my wife and a few others had the rigatoni, someone had the clams linguini, and I had the duck paccheri. Just being honest, and it pains me because I wanted to love this place, I was underwhelmed. Pretty lacking on the flavor, despite a solid attempt. Unsure if it was the sauce or the pasta itself, but it just missed the mark on that wow factor I'm look for at a place like this. A little more flavor, a little fresher pasta, a little more "je ne sais quois". So I was between 3-3.5 leading up to the end of the meal, and as we were finishing our 3rd bottle of wine after having cocktails we decided not to have dessert and we were asked to leave. Over $100 a plate and seemed like we were rushed out for the next seating. We didn't make a scene but since I was on the fence, that tipped the scale for me. Some of the best Italian food I've ever had. The appetizer was good, it was a little odd that the cheese was cold (though that is how it should be served). Next time I'd try the burrata app. The potato party pizza was soo unexpectedly good. Back in the day California Pizza Kitchen had a potato pizza that I loved and this was like that on steroids. The Cacio e Pepe is the best I've ever had. So full of flavor, we couldn't get enough of it. It was a fun atmosphere, we sat at the counter looking into the bar and I loved watching the appetizers made all night. First of all, they ask us for reservations when the place had multiple tables available. Anyways, they don't have a lot of options on the menu apparently the menu changes at 5 pm, so if you go thinking you can eat meat, then, my friend, you will have to wait after 5 pm. We order arancini for appetizers, not a fan. They gave us bread with oil; that was really bad. The oil tasted flat, not flavored at all. We also ordered a pizza called Stretch Armstrong for $27 imagine getting a cracker with pizza sauce and ricotta cheese on top, semi-cold; that's what it tasted like. Anyways, the reason we visited here was because it was the only Italian restaurant open for lunch. At the end they gave us almond cookies that looked and tasted like dog cookies. Also, you have to pay for the parking across the street. I don't recommend this place. Service was okay, we tip well because it was not her fault that the food did not compare to most Italian restaurants. read more

I love this intimate above 5 star ristorante tucked on the northern part of King and I'm certain you will too! There isn't anything on their menu that will disappoint you. I love sharing plates just so I can try as much on the menu that they have to offer. The burrata is to die for and so full of Italian flair, if that isn't your style then try the clams. The broth will make you ask for additional bread just to soak up the savory broth. genuinely one of the best meals I've eaten on American soil. I visited for my birthday and we were seated on the covered outdoor area which was very cute and kept us warm. You NEED to try the stracciatella whether it's the appetizer or the margarita pizza. They make it there and I was speechless after my first bite. The cacio e pepe was also the best, most authentic version of the dish that I've gotten at a restaurant. The homemade pasta and pizza dough are incredible. The tiramisu was delicious and I was skeptical about the raspberry on the bottom but it was a great touch. The zeppoles were also delish and perfectly balanced with the orange whipped cream. When you make a reservation online you are alerted to their $25 cancellation policy. I get having a cancellation policy, but there needs to be a clearly stated time frame for which you should be allowed to cancel with no penalty. Also they want solo diners to sit on an uncomfortable backless stool at the bar. For the duration of my dinner, only a fourth of the restaurant was full so I would have preferred to sit at a table. But I saw they made a woman with a baby in a front carrier on her chest also sit at the bar, in the mostly empty restaurant. The Bucatini Cacio e pepe was delicious! They use a really strong, good quality peppers. The peppers were so big, they were bigger than my grated parmesan. It was super filling. But $30 for a vegetarian pasta? With tip and tax it came out to $40. The bathrooms have sliding doors and are spacious and even have a chair in them in case you want company. Don't arrive early as they won't open the doors earlier. I have eaten at Melfi's a couple times. It's always been good. Last night it was really bad. Service was really bad. Took a long time to get drinks at the bar, even though Restaurant was half full. It took a really long time to get second course cause they said that the kitchen burnt a pizza. But to top it off. They were out of coffee and espresso because I guess a machine was broken, having worked in the hospitality business for over 20 years a I find this unacceptable at an Italian restaurant. I know if I would've been put in the same position, I would had to run out before service started and buy / borrow or steal for some sort of coffee machine on a Saturday night this definitely would not fly anywhere in New York City and to top it off the dessert. We finally went to Melfi's after moving to the area around 8 months ago. We were so focused on trying seafood places, we put this off. What a mistake. Melfi's is hands down one of the best restaurants in Charleston. We went for our anniversary and they had a lovely little card at our seats and gave us glasses of champagne to celebrate. The service at the bar was amazing. Negronis were delicious, the bartender made perfect wine selections for us, and my husband's martini was delicious, The staff was busy, but never put out by our needs and closely monitored us so that the pace of our drinks and food service was spot on. We can't pick a favorite part of the meal - every dish was outstanding including the artichokes, tuna crudo, mafalde, and bucatini. My husband loves cacio e pepe and it was the best he's ever had. I made a visit to Charleston and was recommended Melfi's by several coworkers. I am so glad I managed to snag a reservation because this is one of my favorite meals I've ever had. My sister and I started with the fried zucchini and arancini appetizers. The arancini was a perfect small bite with fried cheesy goodness and I could've bathed in the sauce. The fried zucchini was perfectly seasoned and had a texture like shoestring potatoes. My one feedback for this is that it would be great if it came with an aioli dipping sauce or even that fabulous marinara sauce that the arancini came on top of. We also split the "sort of spicy Caesar salad" and that was absolutely fabulous. The subtle spice was in the breadcrumbs on top, and the dressing had that perfect balance of anchovy and acid. We decided for pastas to share the rigatoni and the cacio e Pepe. It seems unfair to compare the two because the cacio e Pepe was quite honestly the star of the meal. While cacio e Pepe seems like a simple dish, it really is hard to get the right balance of cheese to pasta water ratio without being too rich, but Melfi's absolutely nails it. It was creamy, peppery perfection and the bucatini had the perfect toothsome bite. The rigatoni was rich, garlicky, and the ultimate comfort food. We decided to get the tiramisu to-go because we could not fit one more bite in, but it ended up being a delicious late night snack for us. While the meal was pricey, it was well worth the splurge and I'd definitely recommend if you are ever in town or wanting somewhere for a special occasion. read more

My boyfriend got the Osso Buco and he loved it! Fried zucchini straws as an app were addicting. Our server was nice and helpful, but a little pushy with things like ordering an appetizer. We've had Melfi's on our radar for some time and finally went! Reservations are far out there so plan accordingly. Overall it was a good experience! The menu is quite limited so that is the reason for 4 vs 5 stars. My hubby got Mrs Melfis pizza and I got the pasta dish with the ground veal. The pasta was amazing but also quite expensive. Dinner included the Cacio e Pepe and Mafalde Bolognese. My daughter said the Cacio was quite creamy. The Bolognese was quite flavorful, but had too much kick on back end for me, with addition of red pepper flake, as some do put that in their Bolognese Service was excellent.
