Disregard any negative reviews. I am not from here and this was highly recommended. After eating there this was addictively good. -Tuna app served with pine nuts in a chili oil was deliciously light opening app. -Caesar salad is not truly a Caesar. We were glad the dressing was on the side. Not a fan of the sauce. -The massive steak cooked to perfection served in a bed of roasted vegetables was yum. As an easy main course split. -The pizza is paper thin. Made for one and is sprinkled with addictive magic. Wow that was good. We ordered one for the hotel. Did not travel well so enjoy there. -Roasted halfed eggplant seemed to vanish from the plate. Apparently my kids ate vegetables this evening. -My daughters bugitini served in a light pomadorii sauce never stood a chance. Truly a wonderful experience! Tony provided exceptional service - if I lived in Charleston, I would be here every weekend. The food was delicious (I got pizza and it was definitely big enough for 2) and the atmosphere made it even more perfect. Melfi's...we have eaten here probably a dozen times or more over the last couple years, and went today for lunch. The reason we've stopped coming is this- it's way overpriced for what it is, plain and simple. They also give off a pretentious vibe, again for what it is...pizza and pasta, nothing fancy at all. Good quality, but simple. Today was the last straw however, when we walked in and the manager or whoever sat us, asked my husband to remove his hat. It was so ridiculous I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My husband was wearing a nice-ish clean looking baseball hat, as he's bald and almost always does. He's never ever been asked to remove a hat anywhere in Charleston-or Italy, and it was LUNCH! Get over yourselves Melfi's. read more

I had a five-star experience yet I'm holding back that elusive fifth star for a couple of reasons. As for the good parts. The food and service were wonderful. Sean our server knew a bit about every dish on the menu. Granted the menu is limited but you could tell he tasted every dish I mentioned. This was an outing for my wife's birthday party and it happened to be a Monday when many restaurants were unsure of opening because of the Corona scare. I'm not sure we were doing the right thing supporting locals or risking the spread of the virus? Back to the food. We started with stracciatella a burrata like cheese on toasted Italian bread. If I was a teenage girl at a boys band concert I would have had tears rolling down my cheeks screaming OMG! It was that good. We also shared a dish of cacio E Pepe, a simple pasta dish with pepper and cheese. also for an app was the funkiest Ceasar salad that you could eat with your hands ( washed 15 times, naturally). The salad was a must-have. I'm guessing because of the Corona scare certain entrees were half price the night we dined. Oh yes God is good, which included the Osso Bucco. $24 was a bargain yet the full price $48 was a little pricey considering the restaurant's location is on upper King Street. Don't get me wrong you might think it's the hood but the inside of the restaurant is authentic Charleston southern with exposed brink walls. Kudo's to the designer, very cool space and it might have been my imagination but I could swear I heard Billy Joel singing "A bottle of red.." They even have a doorman and he talks like he's from where baseball players wear pinstripes. Ok so maybe I talk like that too, but he was friendly and welcoming and having a greeter was a nice touch. Great experience, great food and if it wasn't so pricey I would be a regular. $50 for a liter of house red is what I would call pricey. What I appreciate the most about this place is the staff! Don't get me wrong, the food is fantastic, but they truly went above and beyond for our two-person party on Friday night. They seated us earlier than our reservation due to a schedule change, and Isabella is a wonderful waitress! The ambience is clubby but sophisticated; well-suited to a neighborhood Italian restaurant that also has a serious cocktail selection. My pasta meal was solid, but did not fully live up to the hype. One of the pastas at our table was very undercooked. My biggest issue, however, was with the service. The water glasses are about 5 ounces big and we sat without water for about 95% of the meal, which is not ideal with a pregnant wife. There are just too many good things to say about this place but just know you will be spending a pretty penny coming into Melfi's. The staff is great and you can really tell they work as a team rather than as individual staff members which I find to be an important aspect of hospitality. The drink menu is great and the bartender was very helpful upon arriving to the restaurant! It's tough for me to give a restaurant that makes Italian food five stars, but my recent trip to Melfi's was one to remember. I have now told so many people about this restaurant, and is the thing that defined my first trip to Charleston. Let's talk about why: Usually ambiance and service are afterthoughts for me, but at Melfi's, they were spectacular. Karen was our waitress, and did a lovely job recommending dishes and giving us great service. The restaurant itself was amazing, and we sat at a bar overlooking the kitchen, which is my goal at any restaurant of this caliber. But, as always, it comes down to the food. While the pizza we shared (The Mr. Wally) was underwhelming, the rest was astounding. The Mr. Wally was a vodka sauce pizza with sliced salami, onion, mushrooms, cheese and peppers. That was our starter. For the main course, I had the Bucatini 'Cacio E Pepe', and we shared the Wood-Fired Eggplant with pistacio peste, and my friend had the Paccheri with a duck ragu and pargmigiano. First, normally we would have had the appetizer first, but Karen suggested eating it WITH the Cacio E Pepe. And let me tell you, this combinations was so exceptional, I can't do it justice through this review. But, what I keep telling my friends about, is the Duck Ragu pasta dish. OMG. It featured these large tube-shaped noodles, with a melt-in-your-mouth braised duck, in a tomato sauce, with onions and carrots, and thick, shaved parmigiano over the top. The nuanced flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg, the al-dente pasta, and this really hearty duck, has made it the most memorable, and best pasta dish I have ever eaten. I am not sure I have said that about another pasta dish in my 200 or so reviews. Thank you Melfi's, and I will be back to Charleston for the sole purpose of eating this dish again, so it better not leave your menu. read more

This place was highly recommended & gets mostly great reviews. WHY? I ordered the branzino which was so bad bland inedible after eating 1/4 of it I pushed it aside & ordered a different entree. The server ( who never introduced himself) didn't ask if there was a problem. When he asked if I wanted it boxed to take I said no thanks I'm not eating that. He said ok & just took it away(!) They were only seating @ the bar saying we couldn't get a reservation @ a table. Ok no problem. Except the tables stayed empty all night. If they didn't have enough staff to handle tables we would have understood but their message was the tables are taken (?) Our server was barely attentive (see above) and when they switched to a different guy neither one did the usual goodbye/ introduction. Just a new guy asking if we wanted more wine. The server we had Isabella was very knowledgeable and pleasant. The SA Carson we had though should have definitely been our server. She was vibrant, charismatic, and attentive! She was immensely pleasurable and quite frankly the only reason we are leaving this review. The food was not authentic and was grossly overpriced for the portion sizes. After numerous recommendations from people that Melfi's is great Italian my wife and I tried it tonight, 3/3/23. We just moved down here from NY seven months ago. The atmosphere and bar are really nice. We were instantly impressed by the smell and decor of the restaurant. Once seated at the bar for dinner and looking over the menu we realized that they had Zero GF pasta options. (My wife is celiac). The steak option is made for 2 people, no exceptions. The Branzino entree side cannot be substituted for anything else. So my poor wife's options were super limited. She ordered the Cesar salad. It looked great. However upon eating it, it was drenched in dressing ruining it. My Rigatoni pasta entree was so spicy w/red pepper, I could only eat half and had to stop. The manager was a nice guy and when I told him how disappointed I was with the lack of GF options he did have the kitchen make a risotto with the Bronzino fish entree which was delish. Kudos to the manager. Very nice of him to address the issue. The bill comes and the bill was extremely expensive. Yes we had a bottle of wine but with tip, dinner for two was over $300! I was really excited to try Melfi's. It was really mediocre. Great vibe, but a crowded space. Fairly noisy. Things we enjoyed: the prosciutto and melon appetizer and the spicy caesar salad. Things we'd pass on: the overdone, average noodle dishes with the insanely pricey bill. $200 for a bottle of the house red, 2 apps, and pasta. Wonderful experience, great food. I'm not a Charleston local, but this place was recommended to me by my cousin who is. He's Selena a long time in the F&B scene and has his finger on the pulse of what's new and good. Although this has a king street address, it is off the beaten path and outside of the hustle and bustle (other side of HWY 17/26). There's some other popular wine/oyster bars nearby that make this area a great alternative. We sat at the bar because we didn't have a reservation, but it was comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable. We started with the Sorta Spicy Caesar which lived up to its name and was a nice spin in the salad. For mains we split the duck past and a pizza which were both phenomenal. The prices seem a little elevated ($21 pizza), but ultimately we left very happy. read more

At the beginning of our meal our server was fine, as more questions were asked the more short she got, rolling her eyes multiple times as well. Ordered a vesper martini which then couldn't make because they didn't have Lillet nor did they have any other vodkas other than kettle One and Tito's (not what I want in a martin). The service was descent. The restaurant is really Small and once it was filled, became really loud where you could barely hear the conversation at the table. My husband's parents took us here for dinner tonight and was had a fantastic experience! From apps, to our main courses, to dessert, it was all absolutely delicious! Our server was Todd and he was wonderful. I am vegan and he made sure I had food to eat and went above and beyond to make sure all the ingredients were good for me to eat. For an appetizer, I ordered the sweet peppers but just put the cheese on the side. For the main course, I ordered the linguine but in red sauce and added some broccoli rabe and it was unreal. The fresh pasta was to die for. So amazing! And for dessert, Todd suggested the lemon sorbet which was phenomenal. All in all such a wonderful dining experience. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was excellent. There wasn't a single food order that wasn't mouth watering good. I'd highly recommend giving this place a visit. read more
