Oh Renzo. You are just so cute! It's this little corner pizza place tucked in one of the best neighborhoods of Charleston. Service was great- all the guys were attentive and friendly. Service was fast, pizza was hot, and wine was yummy! Even their house wine was delicious! If you come during the week they have happy hour from 5-6 where they have discounted food and $6 house wine. Both delicious, I would have preferred a chimichurri sauce than the Asian chili oil served with the cauliflower. Definitely need reservations as it is a small cozy place. I judge a pizza place by their cheese/margherita before I try specialty pies and Renzo's is very solid. We got takeout so I can't speak to the service or vibes of the restaurant, but we got potatoes al limone and charred cauliflower + margherita and wrath of kahan. I'm a sucker for potatoes and these were fantastic. Smashed, crispy outside, soft in the middle, with a delicious lemon aoili. The charred cauliflower was good but with a totally different and not very italian flavor profile so of the group it seemed the most out of place. Pizza crust was too good to leave behind - chewy with proper bubbles - and the sauce of the margherita was bright and fresh. I recently had the chance to visit Renzo, and it was certainly an interesting experience. Overall, I would give it a solid three stars. From the moment we arrived, the gentleman who greeted us was a bit detached, simply pointing us to our table. It felt a little odd, but we decided to go with the flow. After ordering cocktails and appetizers, the service didn't really improve in terms of warmth or attentiveness. It wasn't until we ordered the bottle that the server seemed to realize we were in the mood to enjoy both drinks and food! When the bottle was brought to the table, it was simply placed in front of us--no chiller, no real attention to the details. We made the best of it, even though the champagne started to warm up as we slowly savored it. I thought maybe it was a simple oversight on the server's part but definitely was a little disappointing. As for the food, while I didn't get a photo of the pizza, I thought it was decent. Have been dying to try this spot since moving here 2 years ago and we finally made it happen. We started with 2 pepperonconi martinis- I'm not a huge fan of martinis so it was a tough one to drink but I enjoyed the concept of it. For apps we did Caesar salad and the Korean Fried Chicken. Caesar was good- not blow your mind good but it's a staple on an Italian menu and everyone around us ordered it so I'd say it did the job. The chicken was good- but I felt like I could easily replicate it by throwing some Trader Joe's chicken in an air fryer and dumping some TJs sweet Thai chili on top. Again, not bad but not amazing. Honestly the star of the show was the sauces for the pizza. We ordered all the dipping sauces and the Garlic was by far the best. We ordered a bottle of the Ambre de Solemme Champagne. Here's where I have to complain- for $150 a bottle it should have been kept in a chiller or ice bucket. It was placed on the table and we had to refill our glasses ourselves, which we are more than happy to do but it just seemed a little odd. Back to the pizzas- A$AP Rocket was delish- my friend wanted it to try the taleggio on it, lovely toppings and we enjoyed the texture of the crust. Thick on the outside and thin in the middle. We got one other red sauce pizza that was tasty as well- even better when dipped in their sauces. Overall service was a 3, food was a 4 and atmosphere was a 4 I'd say. Without a doubt, Renzo is a statement piece. It has a quaint charm to it as it's nestled in a neighborhood near downtown Charleston. In my opinion, it's a perfect first date spot. The small and intimate atmosphere is one that would surely impress a love interest. Matter of fact, there were multiple dates happening around us. If you're looking to step onto the town right after, this is not the place. There's not much on the street other then them and a catty corner speakeasy bar. You'll definitely have to uber to your next location. The menu is petite, which I personally did not mind. It made it simple to pick an appetizer and entree. Again, great for a first date when you want to be focusing on the other person. ;) We chose the Caesar Salad, Wrath of Kahan and The Cheli. The Caesar Salad was unfortunately a big miss for me. It was very heavy on celery, which completely overpowered the salad and masked the traditional Caesar flavors. If you're a celery lover, you'll eat it up! My husband is, and was on a fresh celery cloud 9. The pizzas, like the menu, were petite in size. They were more individual sized, which is not a big deal if you are okay with the price of them. If you are looking to really chow down on lots of pizza, I'd advice going to another spot or go in knowing you are going to spend some dough to get full. We expected The Cheli to be a sweet & spicy mediterranean masterpiece as it said it had feta, lamb sausage, pickled jalapenos, honey and za'atar. We've ordered pizzas like this before and really loved the sweetness the honey provides to the spice of jalapenos. Unfortunately, there was no sweetness or real spice to be found on this pizza. Instead, it had a strong vinegar tang to it. The Wrath of Kahan was our favorite out of the two. I'd order it again! However, both pizzas crust came out a tad too burnt (you'll be able to see in my photo). I'm all about some crunch, but not when the char over powers the pizzas components. Nor when you a paying quite the premium for your pies! Maybe, we just went on an off night? Which is A-okay, things happen! We do not live in the area and will likely not return if we ever travel back to Charleston but I hope others have the 4.5 star experience they have clearly earned. I had some questions for the staff, and they were very accommodating in answering and helping navigate the menu. We ordered the meatballs that were on the happy hour special, and while they were delicious in the sauce was amazing, they were pretty small so they definitely left you wanting more. They were so good so many people recommended them in the reviews and I was like guys we gotta get these. I enjoyed them and then we also got the house ranch and the hot honey sauce to dip our pizza and guys those two were game changers. Also the OG meatballs came in this like Alfredo sauce. I believe I might be mistaken, but it was delicious. If I would've kept that dish and would've dipped my pizza in, 10/10. we grabbed the house wine. It was so good. We had like maybe three glasses, it was such a fun girls night. So delicious! This is not your usual pizza joint, they make the most unusual combinations of flavors that no one else dares to do and you will be happy you tried it. If you really want, you can "make your own" but trust them, at least once. Their Korean fried chicken will make you forget it's an Italian restaurant and the Caesar even has nuts and sunflower seeds to make it special. My friend and I initially had no clue what all of the ingredients meant, but we were so glad we ordered it. Similar to gnocchi, gnudi is mainly made out of ricotta and parmesan cheese. The pesto sauce and the thinly shaved cheese gave it that last flavors that the gnudi was missing. We loved it so much that we even tried to recreate at home (but it didn't turn out like this dish). Disappointing. I don't get the high ratings, the 2-3 star are the most accurate. The pizza crusts were good and tasty, but the toppings and sauces were horrible. The she-hulk was absolutely gross and tasted like soap. The sauce on the wrath of Kahan also had a weird taste and ruined it. Stick to some basics or better combinations, these didn't work.
