It was a last minute decision to stop here and eat after leaving The House of Blues. There was a line out the door which almost deterred us from staying. Well....we stayed and then we waited and waited and then waited some more - OVER an hour! While waiting I went to the rest room - it was disgusting and there was no toilet paper. You would think that since this place is busy pretty much most of the time - that it would be maintained regularly, which was definitely not the case. I ordered the shrimp and grits and was pretty much turned off by it when I saw that the shrimp were not deveined! Come on now that's food prep 101 - devein the shrimp! The grits were delicious though. I myself didn't interact with the staff but my family said they were pretty much rude to everyone. Which seems to be the norm after reading some of the other reviews. I don't even have a food picture for this place, which says a lot . After being in Louisiana for a week, our vacation was coming to an end. After constantly eating grilled and fried seafood, I was over it! I needed some normal options. Stopping at Melba's would be our last eating destination. With an abundance of options on the menu for southern food goodness I opted for a simple turkey sandwich. I know right! Who orders a turkey sandwich on vacation? Well me. I couldn't look at any more seafood, fried food or anything served in gravy! When I seen the turkey sandwich I knew it's what I wanted. This place is disgusting! DO NOT EAT HERE!! They completely messed up our order, didn't give us items we paid for and got others items wrong. There were hairs on the fried chicken wings from the actual chickens because the chicken was not plucked prior to frying (I have attached a photo to this review.) The macaroni noodles were fettuccine noodles with shredded cheese and a disgusting oily substance to top it off. A favorite place to grab a bite to eat when I'm out in the city. There are so many things to choose from. You get so much food too!! For instance, you can get wings, with a side of red beans and rice and another side. Normally red beans and rice is the main dish. The corn grits are great and they give you plenty. Some of the worst food I have ever had. This was recommended from so many locals and it was a huge disappointment. Got the po-girl fried chicken, they forgot half the ingredients I asked for. First time customers have no clue about how this restaurant is arranged. It is located in a strip mall and the front door faces the mall parking, which is too small for restaurant customers. Melba's main parking lot is in the back. You have to stand in line twice to get a meal here, one for the food and one for the drinks. These two lines are in different rooms and there is nothing to tell the customers about the process. If you enter through the front door it appears to be a gift shop, and you have to figure out that this is where the food is. If you enter through the back door it appears to be where you order food but it is not, this is where the drinks are. Once you find the food it is still not clear which clerk is supposed to take your order. The cashier does double duty answering the phone so the line for food backs-up while the cashier is taking orders over the phone. They have limited seating inside. They do have outdoor seating but the picnic tables are only semi-usable because they are covered with bird droppings. I have no complaints about the quality of the food or the prices. read more

Back when I was a meat eater, I would frequent this place in attempts to circulate my money outside of the FQ. However, upon my return as a vegetarian today, I'm learning that this place is not vegetarian or vegan friendly....at all. I ended up eating Mac n cheese & green beans. I enjoyed the food it was great. Although I was missing fries and our drinks cause I paid for combo. They advertise that 1st responders get 50% off total of order. What really upsets me is that they wouldn't honor their discount. I'm a 1st responder and actually considered critical 1st responder. I had my badge and gun on me and they said I had to be in uniform. I was in uniform especially with those 2 things on me. I'm a Highway Emergency Roadside Officer and we don't wear the same thing that city officers and sheriff's wear. I'm also an ex U.S.Marshal with a GS9 clearance. Higher than anyone you imagine. Does this mean that FBI agents and Homicide detectives don't get discounts either. Cause they wear suits not uniforms. Ordered delivery from Melba's after a day of walking around the French Quarter. Ordered shrimp po-boy, chicken strips, shrimp and catfish platter and red beans and rice. They did forget to deliver the half a gallon of sweet tea and one of the sides, but the rest of the meal arrived fresh and hot. The catfish was tasty, but the shrimp, both in the platter and Po-boy, were way over salty and almost totally inedible. The red beans and rice seemed to lack flavor and any spicy kick. OMG... what an experience. I'm in town for Zulu/Fat Tuesday and this place was suggested. First of all the line was so long that I wanted to leave. But it was because it was Mardi Gras. We ordered a poboy, jambalaya, and fries. After about half an hour of waiting the poboy came out, but the fries and jambalaya never came out. Even though we'd already paid for them. After waiting a few more minutes, while other people who'd ordered after us were getting their food, my friend asked someone behind the counter about our jambalaya and fries...and they got mad at us! So we just left without ever getting the rest of our food. This is a uniquely New Orleans place. It's a wash and dry laundromat, a daiquiri shop, and a restaurant all in one. Their menu has plenty of varieties of food to eat and from what I have seen and have tried, most of it is good. If the line is long, you do have the option of placing your order on a kiosk, which will give you a 5% discount. This roast beef Po boy, that's pictured, was very tasty. The customer service at Melba's is horrible! I was greeted by a lady who've never eaten the food and didn't know if she liked anything. Then I was told they were out of fried chicken (dark meat) 15 mins after ordering it. I was initially given the options of white meat, or tenders. I took the option of white meat and then eventually tenders once I was told they couldn't do the white meat (despite being given the option as a replacement ). 10 mins later some guy who I haven't interacted with came back and said they have to give me a refund because he would not honor the swap !! No apology, and was rude about it. How does the worker makes a mistake and then is rude about the mistake is beside me? Not a great experience. We tried this place out at the recommendation of our hotel staff. Melba's staff was unprofessional and inattentive. We ordered the baked chicken, Mac and cheese, wings and fries, and shrimp po' boy. The baked chicken was mushy and overcooked; the Mac and cheese was inedible. You couldn't get close to it because it smelled rotten. The po' boys had decent sized shrimp but the bread was stale. The sandwich overall was dry. This is experience was a complete disappointment.
