The servers constantly suggested what was popular amongst others, so that was nice! It's a smaller restaurant in the university area. Seattle-Area Boba Shop Review #83 I had no idea this location of Mee Sum started as a boba shop and only expanded to food later on. I wouldn't have discounted it so long if I had known! Luckily, we saw it as one of the entries during the recent Boba Fest and decided to stop in for lunch as well. In addition to entrees and drinks, they have a small selection of the baked goods they have at the Pike Place location. It's a good alternative for people who don't want to wait in line. Dine in orders get complimentary bowls of hot and sour soup to start. Popcorn Chicken Meal ($13.50) - This plate includes a large pile of fried popcorn chicken, made of juicy thigh meat, dredged in sweet potato flour, and sprinkled with the fragrant salt, white pepper, and five spice mixture. The meat is very moist, the dredge is very even, and the fry gives only a very light crisp. The powder is very fragrant but the mix they use here seems to have a ton more salt than other places. The chicken comes with a bunch of cabbage with small slices of carrot, stewed in a somewhat savory and salty manner. It's very nicely, lightly flavored and is almost a little buttery. There's a small amount of sweetened marinated salty daikon. There's no daikon flavor but it gives the dish a little more crunch. Finally, there's a mound of perfectly cooked long grain rice, topped by a small bit of braised ground pork. It's nice and flavorful, but a little dried out. (4/5) Deluxe Pork Belly Over Rice ($10.50) - This is a pretty large bowl of rice covered with braised, chopped pork belly ala lu rou fan. Tons of fatty pork belly, braised well and flavorful, but with the sauce being more watery and completely disappearing into the rice. It's surprisingly very thin and not that fatty, so the flavor dissipates too quickly. The pork belly is a little on the dry side with a lot of the moisture having escaped. The dish comes with a hardboiled braised egg that looks super dark like it's been marinating in dark soy sauce for hours. It's cooked well done, but doesn't have any of the green coating on the yolk, which is indicative of an overcooked egg. It's again very flavorful from the time spent in the marinade. Overall, this is an okay lu rou fan. Good enough to satisfy a craving, but pales in comparison to great ones. (4/5) BBQ Pork Hombow ($5.50) - Expensive, but also among the largest char siu buns I've ever seen. Chock filled with sweet and savory meat. It tastes like a bit of shaoxing wine hasn't quite been burned off/evaporated, which gives an off flavor that I don't enjoy that much. The bun is a normal chewy texture. (4/5) Jasmine Milk Tea w/ Brown Sugar Boba ($5) - This was one of the Boba Fest 2025 specials, a premixed drink that comes with brown sugar boba. When I ordered it, I was told that I couldn't adjust the sweetness since the drink was premade. Ominous... Could this be any good? The drink comes out with the classic melted brown sugar swirl. After mixing everything thoroughly, the drink actually isn't too sweet at all - probably equivalent to 25% sweet at most places! Being premixed, I wondered if the drink was perhaps made from powder, especially because I found it to be extremely gritty. And yet the flavor indicates that it's actually brewed tea. It's actually very overbrewed (usually fine for boba drinks), muting the jasmine flower flavors a bit, but also allowing the astringency and bitterness of the green tea leaves to be front and center. It's actually a pretty good tea, but really marred by some grittiness, I guess from the heavy use of non-dairy creamer. The boba is actually very good. Sweetened in brown sugar, smooth spheres that have essentially the perfect chew and bounce. Superb boba, probably in my top 10 around Seattle. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 5/5 Portion sizes are generally very big - we only finished about half the food before having to take the rest home. Although, we were saving room for other food/drinks during Boba Fest, so that might have influenced things a bit. I was very pleasantly surprised, especially by the drinks served by Mee Sum. I wanted to try this restaurant since I am a huge fan of Mee Sum pastry at Pike Place. I had their Roasted Duck with rice and I honestly didn't like it. The duck itself was good, however, they pour the sauce under the duck and it tasted too salty together. I wished they separated the duck and the soy sauce. The fried rice was good. The honey walnut shrimp was pretty good too. Each meal comes with egg drop soup and that was tasty as well. The service was decent. Other than the duck, the other dishes were made decently fast. I always enjoy coming here when I'm on the Ave and craving some wholesome Cantonese/Taiwanese cuisine. I used to come here all the time when I was a student at UW. It's worth the trip to eat here when I'm hungry. I can eat a full meal plus get myself a bubble tea at the same time. Me Sum was a delight to try. Customer service was really welcoming and friendly. The pastry I got was so delicious on the outside it was a little crispy but then buttery on the inside. I wasn't a huge fan of the pineapple in the veggie roll but the sweetness reminded me of bbq pork bao that I liked. I'd give them 5* but their menu is unfortunately rather hit or miss - I have yet to meet anyone who liked the complementary side of soup, and certain items, particularly their baked goods, are weirdly lacking given that they're supposed to be a bakery. (And their baked goods are also weirdly expensive) Have tried a variety of other items which were ok. For whatever reason, they have a milk tea flavor I got on a whim that I'm pretty sure is just cola and milk (Brown Bear flavor, under Mee Sum Family Creations.) In other words, they sell pilk bubble tea. Really unsure how to feel about that, but I do think it's pretty funny (even though I was unable to finish it.) Most notable other item, for me, is their pork belly rice bowl - pretty weird, texture-wise, practically a pork paste with no garnish on rice, but it's pretty cheap, very filling and it tastes pretty good, so if I'm not feeling like splurging on the chicken bowl it's a passable substitute. I used to come here all of the time for their beef chowfun and baked char siu baos (pork buns), but then they got a "Needs to Improve" health rating a couple of years back which made me avoid the place for a couple of years. Thankfully, they have turned around and now have a "GOOD" health rating posted on their door. THE GOOD: - SEAFOOD BAKED RICE: I was a little unsure about trying this one because it has CHEESE melted on top (it's definitely an asian fusion dish), but it's been my favorite go-to order! It's full of SHRIMP, SQUID, and COD tossed in a bechamel sauce and mixed with vegetables. - BAKED CHAR SIU BAO: This is probably their most popular selling item at their Pikes Place bakery. They are big, fluffy, and stuffed with red BBQ pork. If this is your first time here, definitely give this a try! - STIR FRIED RICE CAKE: The cakes are chewy and very spicy. They stick to your ribs, so you definitely will have enough for two meals! If I remember right, this dish also comes with pieces of pork or chicken. - BEEF CHOWFUN: They used to use wider rice noodles, but they've recently switched to a thinner rice noodle which is unfortunate. However, the oil and soy based sauce is just right and the portion is generous for what you pay. I recommend getting the beef over the chicken because my friend got takeout once and the chicken was still raw in the middle :/ THE BAD: - BAKED VEGETABLE BAO: I thought that the filling would be savory with shredded cabbage and carrot but this was far off from what I expected. While the bun was fluffy like the char siu baos, the filling was basically a large glob if viscous sweet and sour sauce with chopped vegetables. It was basically inedible and so I ended up throwing it out. - MATCHA MILK TEA: I will assure you that all of the other tea flavors are better than their matcha flavor. The fake green tea powder is neon green, almost like the color of artificial green apple Laffy Taffy. It tastes mostly like chemicals and nothing like green tea. If you plan on ordering a bubble tea, I instead would recommend the black milk tea, Mikey's Mango, or the black sesame milk tea (get 1/2 sweetness because they tend to be on the sweeter side). Service tends to be on the slower side unless you're getting a drink or baked good. However, Mee Sum has a lot of seating and WiFi so it's a great place to meet when you are studying in a group or meeting up with friends. My friends and I came here for a quick dinner on Wednesday night. Another friend recommended this place to us and we thought we would come try it out. First off, parking on the Ave is really hard. There were barely any parking spaces, and street parking was difficult because there were a lot of cars going around on University Ave. We got to the restaurant around 6:45 PM, and we were able to get a table without any difficulty. The server gave us menus, so we can look at them before going up to the counter to order. They have a bunch of different dishes-- chicken, beef, pork, and seafood. They had Taiwanese cuisine, as well as Hong Kong and Chinese dishes. At the counter, there were a lot of Asian style buns on the counter. I was really tempted to get one, but the $2.25 price tag was really high. After some deliberation I decided to get the crispy chicken wings dinner, since I love Chinese fried chicken and I haven't been able to find a place that served them. The guy at the counter who took our order was super cool. He suggested some dishes for my friend, and told me that the fried chicken would take a bit longer than the other dishes (around 10 min). The food came out really fast (with the exception of the wings, but that's expected), with soup and rice as sides. The soup had mushrooms and tofu in it, and it was light, savory, and delicious. Special shout out here to our server, who was fast, provided good service, and was hilarious. He explained to us what each dish was, except for one of them-- he didn't know what it was called. However, he explained to us that he just finished finals and his brain was elsewhere! Being fresh college grads ourselves, we know that feeling all too well. HAHAHA, somebody please give this guy a pay raise. When I got my fried chicken, it first looked and smelled so good, that I forgot to take pictures and just started eating right away! That really speaks to how appetizing the food is, because I always take pictures of my food. The wings were crispy, well-seasoned, and juicy. They were also really hot because they were freshly fried! The meat inside was all fully cooked, and its tenderness contrasted nicely with the crispy exterior. I inhaled all 5 wings in under 10 minutes, and proceeded to inhale half the broccoli (was a little bit hard but still good) and half the rice (topped with meat so it was savory!). I ended up taking the rice and broccoli home, so I could save it for another meal. When we left, I forgot my phone on the table. When we called the number, our server picked up and let us know that he had the phone, and that we can go back to pick it up.
