This was my third move using Meathead Movers, but my first time using the crew based out of Orange County (The other two times were Ventura County). My first two experiences with this company explain why they were asked back a third time.
My initial contact was with Torrey, the coordinator for Orange County. He was on time for the estimate, answered all questions thoroughly, was accessible whenever I needed to call with more questions or concerns about selecting my move date, and generally very responsive through email and phone. He sold me on getting some packing services through the company (Princess Packers) which was a service we had not before taken advantage of.
Sydney with Princess Packers was great. She was thorough with her explanations, careful with our items, and kind enough to give us some discounts on the mounds of packing materials we had to pay for. Arturo helped her with packing and they both did an outstanding job of marking boxes and packing carefully. Nothing was broken or damaged in the moving process. I actually had them pack everything that was fragile including all kitchen items, wall art, vases, etc.
Lastly, the move. The day of, 4 men came to complete the job. It was a pretty big move (4 bedroom house...and I have three small kids if that gives any clue as to how much stuff we have). My husband and I were at the house doing additional work to pack smaller items into our cars. I showed up after my husband did, but the movers did not even acknowledge my presence by perhaps, introducing themselves? That set the precedence for the rest of the experience. It was obvious I lived there, yet they did not make any effort to really warm up to me so I felt like I was walking on eggshells in my own (soon to be former) house. I did not experience this lack of basic customer service and courtesy the other two times we used Meathead Movers. The other two times, the guys were absolute gentlemen.
Anyway, the personal matter aside, let's get into the technical moving stuff:
- These guys were not efficient. I cannot tell you how much time was wasted when they tried moving our large fridge out of the house. From not measuring doorways to scrambling to find appropriate tools to remove handles from the fridge door (thankfully, my contractor was there at the time finishing up a job and he happened to have the right tools), to standing there and looking helpless, I was unimpressed.
- Common sense was lacking. Like when they unloaded boxes into the garage for us and I'd find a small box on the bottom with three much larger (and heavier) boxes stacked on top of it. Seriously?
- Sloppiness and inconsistency. My daughter's mattress was not wrapped (yet all others were), so I loved that her linens were filthy upon setting up her room. Her light-pink upholstered chair was not wrapped and arrived with black smudges and stains all over. Couch was moved after unwrapping, leaving marks and sweat on it.
- Inability to comprehend instructions. I was asked where to put one of those over-the-toilet shelves. I directed the man where to place it and he said, "It won't fit." Surely he was misunderstanding me, so I explained HOW he needed to place it there. He argued again it would not go there. I showed him what to do (lift and place this part behind the tank and set down). Still didn't get it. My dad was there and being a little old man who can't do the job himself, tried explaining to the guy how to put it there. I left to move more stuff. Came back, they were still there, and the shelf was still not over the toilet, so I finally grabbed it and did exactly what I told him to do and BAM, it fit.
- Attitude. There was an incident with putting together my sectional couch. I did not realize my husband disassembled it at our old house so they wouldn't have to figure it out so when we were at the new house, I asked them to put it back together. It was the end of the day, we were all tired, and I just wanted my couch intact. They told me none of them took it apart, which confused me, so I fully admit that I jumped the gun saying the must have. This was eventually resolved when I called my husband to ask about the couch and he confirmed he took it apart. I immediately apologized to the crew for placing blame and one of the guys had the gall to roll his eyes and throw his arms up like, "I TOLD YOU SO." Give me a break.
These guys had the muscles, but the common sense and customer service were severely lacking. Moving is typically WAY more stressful for the families involved, so these guys need to remember that and be more courteous and kind.
Meathead followed up and offered to send out someone to clean the furniture. I did not feel it was worth the time and interruption it would cause while I was busy with unpacking and with three small children at home, but I appreciated the gesture, anyway. It was easily preventable, though. read more
