McMenamins Anderson School is a great spot. Lots of options on site surrounded by lush landscaping and lots of parking that is somehow always full! McMenamins is an anchor in downtown Bothell and right next to Pop Keeney. Date night, out with friends, happy hour with coworkers, family dinner - it all works. And it has some unique features: You can stay at the hotel, swim in the salt water pool, play shuffleboard, eat outside by the fire, drink wine or a cocktail or a beer! They've got Tiki and they've got Tillamook! If you haven't been, it's definitely a go try. While it is not gourmet and runs on the salty/fatty side, there is healthier fare. And sometimes, a girl just needs Cajun Tots! read more

Superb idea. I really wanted to give five stars. The location is great, cool ambiance, indoor and out outdoor setting. The biggest complaint is identifying wait staff in such a busy environment, and them goofing off rather than working. If management supplied matching Polo shirts with company logo to all front of house waitstaff, it would make ALL the difference. read more

I needed a quiet place to stay and work for a few nights and I am glad I came to McMenamins Anderson School hotel. I wish I had known about this place way back. A unique experience! The hotel room is WONDERFULLY CLEAN. And it's clean everywhere in the building. Thumbs up to the housekeeping staff! And kudos to the business owners who seem to make sure the furnishings stay fresh and new. So so COOOZY and QUIET. Soft carpeting throughout the room and the hallways. The FUN DECOR AND WARM COLORS are so inviting. High ceiling. Little vintage style decorated seating areas tucked away here and there in the building. Love the attention to the details. I took the SUNRISE package with breakfast. Happy I did! YUMMY BIG HOMEMADE BREAKFAST delivered to my room every morning by a kind and professional young man! All I need to do, is to pick what I want in the menu and hang it at the door knob each evening. What I love is that KITTIES ARE ACCEPTED for a very reasonable fee per day. And my orange kitties seem to feel home right away. They look so happy here, so I keep on extending my stay! Lol! Every staff person I spoke with is very friendly and professional. Feels GREAAAT to be here. Very nice parking area and it's FREE. Saw a couple of cute tiny rabbits! :)))))) This is a really FABULOUS 3 star hotel. UNIQUE ambiance. Casual and relaxing atmosphere. Lovely budget friendly getaway that is actually close to everything. From now on, I will look for a McMenamins hotel whenever I travel in the Pacific Northwest. Disappointing. Checked the menu on their website (not very intuitive site) and found several vegetarian/vegan options. Once seated at the restaurant, got a completely different menu without a single vegetarian/vegan option. (Hello, you are a restaurant in the greater Seattle area!!) Wait staff was not attentive, service was slow. Food was ok. Their chocolate cake dessert sounded good, but was very disappointing. This is the best place to drink beer and meet up with friends in Bothell/Mill Creek .... Multiple bars , great beer (get the hammerhead) and great food. Outdoor area feels like a civilized keg party....with a movie theater inside as well. Dare I say there's a cool place your friends from the city will drive to Bothell for. read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in to have a drink and maybe to shoot a bit of pool in The Woodshop a couple Sundays ago. (11.21) The place was busy and all the pool tables occupied so we elected to be seated at a two-top adjacent to the bar. Just like all other businesses they were understaffed but as it turned out it was worth the short wait for a server to acknowledge us. Madeline came from behind the bar to take our order and, after a couple of questions regarding specific brands, we gave her our drink order. She asked if we wanted any food (it was happy hour). We really wanted some snacks but we responded, as we usually do, by telling her that we had multiple, difficult food allergies and almost never ate at restaurants. Most servers would say, "OK", and walk away at this point but not Madeline. She took it as a challenge and asked us to name our allergies! After listening to us list them off she commented that she was almost certain that she could feed us safely but she would go double check with the kitchen. A few minutes later she came out and made us both extremely happy - she rattled off two or three items from the happy hour menu we could safely eat. We ended up with two orders of hot, crispy fries. If that doesn't sound like a big a deal to you you've never had to sit in a bar watching everyone else enjoy food you couldn't have! Oh, if you get the fries make sure you try the Portland brand ketchup with them. Major Kudos to Madeline for her in-depth food and beverage knowledge and her pleasant persistence. Thank you Madeline for making our experience a great one. I'd also like to thank the kitchen management for maintaining a gluten free deep fryer and for using a non-allergenic fry oil. Crowded spot on a Friday night that was pouring outside! There's plenty of parking so don't worry about that. My friend and I got there and immediately put our names down for the 2 other restaurants in the school area and the wait time was 2 hours so we decided to grab a drink and wait by grabbing the open table in the area designated for non restaurant spots. Turns out we waited only 20 minutes before we got a text to check in. Pro tip! Use the wait list and just grab a drink while you do that. When seated we got seated by a fire pit and we had their crab cakes and their hot whisky. Great time and will definitely come back. read more

Mixed feelings about this business being fully closed during the pandemic. This place has so much character, I really hope they are able to reopen at a safe time. We have been here several times for various social occasions. A non-profit that we volunteer with rents the Thorndike room annually for a celebratory meal. Community members can rent this room free of charge once a year. There is lots to be said about the food here. Good variety. Great homemade ice cream. Lots of local craft beers.... But I find it a bit overpriced for the quality. Ambience is fun but most of the dining room is dark. Love the inner courtyard/patio area. At one point we considered this place for a large fundraiser. Although it was out of our budget, for a different event, we would certainly consider it in the future. read more

This place is heavenly. Enjoyed a nice swim/soak. Be sure to bring a robe, big fluffy towel and flip flops; getting out of the pool is tough as it's freezing! Note to the childless: Very family friendly, so maybe consider going later in the evening if you want to avoid the kiddies. There are lockers but they can't be locked so take your purses/valuables and hang them on the hooks by the pool so you can keep an eye on them - there's plenty of pool deck to put your things where they won't get wet. After a hot shower we headed upstairs to the North Shore Lagoon Tiki Bar and had burgers (which were delicious, they have veggie burgers and gluten free buns as well), the cajun tater tots had a lovely seasoning, but not spicy at all (sort of assumed they might be) and my daughter had the 3 little pigs pizza - the "small" wasn't so small so keep that in mind; with lots of cheese, pulled pork, BBQ sauce, bacon and ham, it was filling and hearty. Our server was a little forgetful as he forgot to put in a couple things we'd ordered, but the place is new so I'm sure we can attribute any mistakes to their newness. Regardless, I loved this place and want to go back to check out the other pub, tavern and lodge. So worth a visit! read more

What an interesting spot! Unfortunately it was extremely busy and crowded; there wasn't a single free fire pit when we arrived and some of the gas heaters were out of gas and the staff knew and had stopped refilling them for one reason or another - it's winter!!! Not a single wait staff came around to ask what we wanted to drink. Later in the night, fire pit lid would've burned me if I wasn't paying attention and stopped it with my foot - it wasn't secured and someone across from me lifting the lid (to refill wood) caused the whole thing to slide off towards my legs (design issue, area not well lit enough for the person lifting the lid to see as the lid started to slide). In the dark I couldn't make out any clear signs for where restrooms were - the property is like a maze, which I imagine can be frustrating after a few drinks. Pretty unique but there are definitely areas for improvement. read more

My wife and I thought we just spend the weekend away from home and she decided to try Anderson School Hotel. We read a lot of nice reviews. But these reviews were not from anyone with a walking disability. The handicapped parking is about 100 yards from the office to check-in. Then if you are in a wheelchair you can't even get into the office to check in, there is no handicapped entry. Then here is the kicker if you are in a wheelchair or unable to climb stairs you have to go down this dark path to the back of the build about 150 yards away to a winding ramp to the back of the building where the garbage cans are stored and again try to get access to the building with no handicapped access, then you try to get into a small elevator that has a huge gap where my wife wheelchair flipped over because the wheels got stuck in the elevator entry and the door still tried to close and when we got to the room it was not even large enough for the wheelchair to access and turnaround in the room. One thing I must say is that the bathroom was larger than the rest of the room. I say this to say if you are disabled with any kind of walking issue stay far away from Anderson School Hotel. read more

It was a beautiful night, we all had the best time and the place was PACKED of course. I can't speak for the food, accommodations or entertainment but the drinks were strong, well priced and the fire pits were so fun and relaxing. I enjoyed a margarita and splurged on the beignets for $2/each which were crazy good with TONS of powdered sugar. The manager agreed to keep our fire pit open long after it was supposed to be shut down since the wait staff had closed the area off. The food looked great and I heard from others that the rooms and entertainment were tons of fun. We'll be back for sure! read more

Whoo Hooo!!! Tripster Party!! This property is great - the McMenamin Bros have outdone themselves this time, and dothey know how to throw a party - AWESOME SAUSE all night long. The property was not quite done - but it is fantastic. The painting/artwork was not complete or hung in some areas - but the general history of the school will be fun to see when I go back. We started with drinks at the Tavern on the Green. The Bees Knees was delish. While sitting at the bar - we invented the Ruberry Cider - 1/2 Ruby and 1/2 Blackberry Cider. Order it - it's a thing. Moved onto the Woodshop. It is open and comfortable - sporting all the games (pinball, pool, shuffle board - hello experience stamp). Continued with Ruberry Ciders. Got the pretzel sticks and hummas plate. tastey. We then moved on to distillery and wine tasting. The gin is wonderful. Walked across the lot (no drinks allowed0 to the pool. The pool was not open - but once they get that area set up and going - I can tell it will be a blast. The Tike Bar overlooking the pool was super fun to hang in - I really enjoyed the rum punch. The icing on the cake was meeting the Bros - great down to earth dudes. Had breakfast at the Tavern on the Green the next morning. Fantastic mushroom and goat cheese omelet. Make sure to take a look around the property as it is a unique facility. And if it is a nice evening or afternoon choose to dine outside. I had the chopped salad with added prawns and it was a very generous portion. I couldn't even finish it. Those dining with me had the chicken sandwich, the gumbo, and the clams. Everyone was very satisfied with their meal. Make sure to try some of their beers and whiskeys if you like to partake, as they brew/distill their own. We have also really enjoyed the Theater (you can dine while you watch with food from their grill) and had happy hour at the Tikki Bar above the pool. All really fun experiences. read more

Hotel: Staff was SUPER FRIENDLY! Front desk staff, housekeepers/maintenance staff we ran into in the halls. Our room was so great. We got assigned a King Plus on the 3rd floor. Super high ceilings, beautiful large windows making for a great view, and cozy feel. (Might I add, I love the flickering lights on the chandelier!) noticed a few cobwebs, but they were out of reach. With the exception of the young man working in the Principal's Office.. He could have cared less about the questions we were asking him. Tavern/Woodshop/Market/Lagoon: Awesome gift shop!! Not overwhelming but packed with lots of goodies. Wonderful and friendly staff at every revenue center. We are just out of state Passporters, but we felt welcomed and not "unimportant" as I've felt elsewhere. We did enjoy a nightcap at the Tavern bar. Very knowledgeable bartender. the campus has been nicely redone, but I didn't care for weaving around in the yard to try and find where I was going. signage is an afterthought. we landed in a bar with pool tables. nothing on the menu was anything that I was too interested in, so I passed. beer was the beverage of choice at the table. We went to the taproom, and the space and atmosphere was nice and lively overall...BUT the service wasn't the best. I understand they were busy, but it was pretty disorganized. We sat down at a small booth next to the bar, and we had this one waiter that came up to us I wanna say like 4 times after we repeatedly told him that we were still working on the drinks we had. I've worked in the restaurant industry so I understand checking up on tables, and making sure they're doing okay, but he was a bit rude and just interrupted us. We weren't camping by any means, we were there for like 20 minutes, but he kept coming up to us, and passive aggressively asked if we STILL wanted to order something, we finally caved and ordered a pizza. He rolled his eyes after the 4th time he came up to us and we said we were still okay. So my date had suggested that we try this place out. She said they have a passport system, drinks, staff, great atmosphere and of course the food. What I found was amazing! First off the parking situation, was great. Especially at 1:00 pm in the afternoon, not over packed but the place does get busy early in the day with some families & older couples. The staff are friendly and like to give as much information about the facilities. The restrooms are artsy and very unique. They have a garden out front, which really surprised me since space is always a luxury for any themed places like this. However, there isn't a place like it in Washington. I can attest to that. Conclusion: I'll be coming back again. Get a passport, make the rounds at the rest of the other locations in Washington & Oregon. You owe it to yourself. read more

The Scene: Three couples met for dinner on a summer Friday night. The weather was perfect for sitting outside and we had a table next to a fireplace that was lit when the temperature dropped. The Good: The outside patio is lovely and the ambiance relaxing. The live music was perfect, not too loud to interrupt conversation but definitely enhancing our experience. Even though it was VERY busy, the beautiful landscaping curved around the entire outdoor area to make smaller "rooms" for dining. We did not feel crowded, it was not noisy and we were not rushed. The Bad: It appears that each of the many dining areas has a different menu but you can order from any menu. Our waiter only brought us "his favorite" so we had no idea there were other choices. We all ordered at one time but dishes were served sporadically and far apart; two of us were already finished with our meals before others were served. I ordered the Highlander Salad with Chicken; when it arrived (far later than others at our table) it did not have the correct salad dressing and the grilled chicken was cold. I sent it back and it was promptly replaced. Our food was pub fare and it tasted good. The Ugly: Our service was horrible! Our untrained, apathetic, and rude waiter leisurely strolled though his section, ignoring guests vying for his attention. Examples: (1) When asked a question about a dish he arrogantly said "That's not in my pay grade" and made no attempt to find the answer. (2) Our menu only listed a white wine blend called White Rabbit; when we asked about ordering Chardonnay he said "it's out of my way to get Chardonnay, are you sure you want that?" (Answer was yes). (3) He could only carry two items at a time (do they not have trays?) so food and drinks arrived sporadically, at his convenience. (4) Without being asked, he divided the check in thirds, assuring us he "split it up in the best way;" it was inaccurate. (5) Clearing the table was obviously beneath him...we moved our own empty plates and glasses to an open table. So go to Anderson School for the music, activities, ambiance and pub fare...but go knowing that laughable service is part of McMenamins' show. read more

McMenamin's is a destination more than a gourmet dining experience. We've been here several times, mostly to catch a movie, and for that it's a fun place to come. The theatre is cozy and inviting, and the seats are comfortable and roomy (so people getting up and down don't really disrupt you much). There is only one theatre, which changes titles every couple of weeks and sometimes has kid friendly titles (especially during the summer). In fact, the main reason we come here is so that mom and dad can have some adult food and beverages while the kids are occupied with kid-friendly eats and a movie. McMenamin's has some pretty good brew, and they change up their ciders every few weeks as well. If you're more of a mixed drink person, you can get those too. The food is okay. I usually stick with the hummus, which comes with their house made pickles (these are yummy) and veggies, and it's a meal in itself. The kids like the pizza and the chicken nuggets, and the fish and chips are decent as well. There are areas that this place could improve upon. You can purchase tickets online, which ensures you have a seat, but the check in is through the same line as those waiting to purchase tickets, and lines can be long. Those same lines then must enter a second long line to order your food. The lobby is super small, so it's pretty cramped and staff and patrons both become a bit flustered during the process. McMenamin's is large enough that staff in other sections of the property could be cross-trained in the theatre, and help move people through more quickly (even one additional staff member checking in the online ticket holders would cut the time in half and fee up space. It would be great if the could streamline the food ordering process too, again, by pulling another bartender over only at those peak times (20 minutes before the movie starts) to move things along more quickly. The design for the food trays are also poor - they don't hold a full-sized plate (even the kids meals and pizza slices come on a full-sized plate) so your plate doesn't sit flat on the tray. They also fit pretty loosely into the seats, so if you shift positions and lift your leg too high, your tray may fall out (this almost always happens to someone's tray crashing to the floor half way through the movie. That said, the ambiance at this place is pretty neat. I love the outdoor gardens and the different rooms that you can hang out in, and the pool (which is in a separate building housing another one of their restaurants) looks clean and would be a fun place to splash around in. The gift shop is fun to browse around in and a good place to stop and pick out some of their beers and wines (they make a lovely port). The food in the restaurants is again, just okay. I definitely wouldn't come here if you're just looking for a great meal. But if you're coming for a movie with the family or for a drink on their patio, I highly recommend that. read more

Booked a last minute stay-cation here with the family and really enjoyed it. We swam in the pool 3 different times, temperature was good, pool was clean, locker rooms weren't crowded. They do a great job of making sure there aren't too many people in any one session, which helps. I love that it's indoor/outdoor - seeing the sky through the huge skylights is pretty neat and keeps the pool area from getting too humid. We had a snack at the Woodshed pub - soft pretzel sticks & BBQ wings - hit the spot after a couple hours of pool time throwing the kids around and splashing with some friends who'd joined us just for a swim session. After checking in, getting settled and some more pool time we ate dinner at the North Shore Lagoon above the pool. Tiki style drinks and the south asian meets pub-style food was what I was expecting (I had the kalbi short beef ribs with jasmine rice). Finished up the night having a chocolate cake at the Tavern restaurant which the kids completely inhaled. Our room was spacious for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) and quiet despite the city streets and restaurants around us. We ordered room service for breakfast and it came on-time and what we ordered. I especially liked there wasn't the built-in service charge & tip (and yes, I remembered to tip well). The little "principals office" on the 3rd floor of the hotel is a cute touch - cocktails in the evenings and coffee in the AM. We even hit the pool again in the morning before checking out (you can do it after checking out too) which is a nice way to finish off the vacation, at least for my water obsessed kids. We'd brought a few little dive toys, which I'd recommend, since there isn't anything they provide there. Cute little gift shop let us pick up something for some friends & family, and if you're beer-minded (it is a McMenamins) there are pretty awesome growler choices here too. The only thing it's missing is communal places to hang out that aren't attached to the restaurants/bars. I get that the restaurants/bars *are* the business here, but since the hotel doesn't really have a lobby it'd be nice if some of the outdoor seating was "free" to just chill/hang out in when you're not swimming or eating. The hotel is an old school so the space just isn't there for hanging out, except for your room. But overall, I'll definitely keep this on the list for in-town getaways with the family or friends in the future. read more

It's not clear if the Tavern restaurant is working out some kinks or if it is just going to be a sub-par restaurant. We had breakfast here and it took ten minutes to get a latte (initially the waitress said, "Oh, we don't have those" and then I nicely pointed out that they were on the menu). I should have known then...When the food came the potatoes were almost cold. We had to ask for more syrup for the waffle as what came on the plate was a tiny little thing of syrup, about an ounce, clearly not enough for Belgian waffles. Food tasted fine, nothing special (looks better on the menu than it tastes). The final, and perhaps fatal, flaw was when the bill came they charged us 50 cents for the extra ounce of syrup. Now, I have the extra 50 cents, it's not about that. It's just ridiculous that a restaurant would serve an item with not enough syrup and then charge you to bring you an additional piddling amount of syrup. I doubt we will return. read more

I love working with the event staff at McMenamins. I have had 5 separate events there and attended dozens of others, and I feel like they really take it up a level to meet my needs. The Haynes hall is always customized just how we need it. The menu options are diverse. The event serving staff are kind and attentive. It's such a great place to have an event because its diverse and there are so many pre party and after party options for guests. I really enjoy the event spaces on the other side of the theater as well. They have lots of flexibility and feel homey. read more

We had 6 of us (3 couples) stay for a night. All 3 couples (42+ ages) were very excited to spend a quality night on this property. It all started out good and sweet at the Woodshop with Penny. She was fabulous. She took care of us through 2 drinks and had some appetizers (40% tip). We then moved over to the Shed for a drink (which is a fabulous atmosphere- 30% tip) before heading to Tavern on the Square for 7:15 reservations for dinner. This is where it all fell apart. After ordering an appetizer with awful service- we inquired about a bottle of wine for the table and SAM (our waitress) informed us that someone overheard the word "drunk" come from our table and she said "we take our liquor license seriously and we will not serve intoxicated patrons". We all sat and looked at her like "ok- but what does that mean to us?" She said- "we will not serve a patron who is drunk." Again we said, "ok- we get that and totally support that but none of us are drunk or even tipsy". She then walked away to get our food which- coincidently- took twice as long as it should have. After our food got there - we inquired AGAIN about a bottle of wine and Sam acted like it was fine. Like it never happened. It was the STRANGEST thing. She served us a bottle of wine and 2 mixed drinks(0% tip and I have NEVER IN MY LIFE tipped 0% before and we had a $400 bill!!!) So really- what was the point of the comment and insinuation?! All it did was leave us with a bitter taste in our mouth and a crappy dining experience. That comment put a damper on our entire night. Now mind you, we are hard working, responsible adults who were looking for a long awaited night away from kids and responsibilities. We in NO WAY took advantage of the situation and acted like 22 year olds. We were in it for the marathon - not the sprint. And for our server to insinuate that we were drunk like some frat boys, well- that was a slap in the face and totally laughable. I'm not sure I will ever recommend this complex to anyone. While the entire atmosphere was eclectic- and interesting- the accusations were a bit much. Final word - be careful what you say in earshot of staff.
