We had so much fun. Plan on going back and staying at the hotel, so we can enjoy it more. The bars and restaurants are fixed up up in so many cool and funky decor that you enjoy sitting and having food or drinks in each area. That is why it is best to spend the night. Had a lot of fun in the principal's office. Not large because it has a bar in there, but room to enjoy a drink and eat, and talk to others people there about time sent in the principals office. We had two meals one in the tavern on the square and a snack in the principals office. All delicious. Plus a nice swimming pool ( use to be the HS pool. We want to go back and stay so we can go to the movie theater there. Just plan a day to relax and enjoy it all.

Our water color group painted at the Tavern on the Green today, and had a very enjoyable time. Cora was our server and she did an outstanding job of taking care of everyone. I had the turkey and bacon sandwich with fries and it was delicious. I first had hot tea, cranberry orange. It was loose tea served as pictured. Really yummy with honey! And the light was perfect for painting!

Wow what a beautiful place cozy by the outdoor fire pits. Awesome atmosphere great food and drinks. Highly recommended going here and spending time walking around, eating and dining. Had glass of white wine with black bean burger no bun and side salad. Very delicious. Parking is a challenge at certain times, I was able to find one right away. Antonio was very helpful and definitely attentive.

Love, line this experience! We spent one night so had a great time and got to enjoy all the amenities as we were stamping our McMenamin's Passport. For starters we got room 302 with three windows and on the end of the hall.... great big room... it was beautiful! We swam in the pool (ask for robes at the front desk) and you walk across the parking lot to the lagoon pool. We saw a movie and ate dinner in their renovated theatre. The seats are rocking theatre style. If you get there early you can sit with the small tables in front of you so order at the bar and you get it delivered to your seat. Coffee bar in the morning was on the 3rd floor. Overall, the staff was great, hotel, restaurant, pool, movie theater were all wonderful!

The front desk agent was kind and helpful. When you first walk in the room, there is definitely that "wow" factor with the extravagant style, maximalist decor, and terrific lighting. However, upon settling in we did notice a few things that weren't smoothed over (a tack on the floor that could have pricked someone's bare feet, some peeling paint, a tear in the couch fabric, and some rungs missing in the curtain that did not allow the window to be covered fully leading to a lot of light being let in during the early morning hours). Overall, the hotel is unique and beautifully whimsical. With a few extra comforts, it would truly be a stellar stay.

We visited Portland a few years ago and came across one of their many electic taverns. I wish I remembered the name of the property- but, it was multi level and had this ginormous wooden bar that shelved the liquor bottles. I forgot where it actually got imported from. We sat at the Portland bar chatting up the bartender. And he gave us the rundown on Mc Menamin's properties and how they'll repurpose many locations. When we left, I looked up the various locations and knew- SOMEDAY we were gonna stay at one of their many electic school properties! Fast forward to 2025. Since new booked our Alaska cruise to sail to/ from Seattle- Anderson School was the place to go. Although it's about 25 miles out of the Seattle area- I figured this was our only chance to enjoy the property! I booked our stay way in advance. And took advantage of the pay early deal. What originally was a premium king room- sofa included. I figured more leg room to stretch out after disembarking a 7 day cruise. Hubby got a missed call while we were on the cruise ship. Since our phones are on Plane Mode- we don't receive calls. But, Jesse from Anderson School, left us a voicemail. Jesse mentioned there were issues with the premium rooms and if it'd be ok if he gave us a standard king room. Thank goodness we happened to be in port when we realized the voicemail. Hubby called Jesse right away and explained we were on a cruise. We told Jesse the room switch was fine (because I was REALLY looking forward to our stay). And while they were in the phone- hubby explained we'd be getting off the ship by 8am and would most likely arrive at the hotel by 10am. By the time we arrived by 10am- Jesse was very accommodating and very apologetic as well. He was able to get us checked into a room right then and there! Which was a huge relief! Here at this property- it's not your typical cookie cutter hotel chain. And there isn't much of a lobby, per se. There is one couch at the Tavern on Square- (next to a fire place) which is in the same building as hotel check in. But, MANY out door seats. Our room was on the first floor (thank goodness) and closest to the elevator side of the school building. There's only one elevator. The school building is awesome! Yes, hallways are dimly lit. Which is fine with me. Not a fan of LED lights. LOL. And each room's door has a name painted on it. Our room 110- had the name of the vice principal! Since I was in a medical boot- this arrangement helped out so much, being on the first floor. As soon as we settled into our room- I felt the need to explore the school building. Daily coffee available on third floor- outside the Principal's Office- til 11am. The Principal's Office opens at 4pm, I believe and it's such a teeny cozy space. There a bar inside and you can actually order food! So, we did grabbed our night cap from there. While hubby slept- I sat outside under the trees and read my magazines. Watched some squirrels putter patter around. By the time it was lunch- hubby joined me outside at The Tavern. There really is no reason to leave the property. After we finished lunch- it was time for the 3:30pm matinee! For $11/ adults- the theater was great! First come, first served on seats. I thought they'd be the hard wooden stiff auditorium/ theater seats. But, these were cushioned and cozy. The seats actually rocked! We watched How to Train Your Dragon. You can order drinks and get popcorn and other snacks. Afterwards- we walked by their garden area. Plenty of apple and fig trees. Artichokes, salad green and herbs. There's a chicken coop. And they're very robust. LOL We enjoyed some tiki drinks at Nui Nui's. I initially booked this property because they had a huge saltwater pool & the tiki bar in another building. We didn't have the energy to dip in the pool. The pool is also for the community as well. There are lockers, showers and changing rooms. Since we didn't utilize the pool- the theater made our reservation worth it! Also, since our reservation downgraded from a premium to standard king room- Jesse put the difference back to the card on file. Looking forward to another Mc Menamin's visit when we're in the PNW. They also have their own beers and coffees!

Fun place to go with many different settings and ambiances. Each area differs and there is an outdoor fire pit area as well. Tiki bar area was cool and well decorated. They had an assortment of beers and different types of entrees from steaks to salmon. Service was great, we had a server named James and he was very attentive and his memory was great as to who ordered what in our group of 8.

So much fun! Same thing in all the rooms though: dark lighting. Water is hot, room is warm, bed is comfy, people are nice and drinks are great. Location is perfect, lots to do

Staying at The Anderson School Hotel was a bucket list experience--charming, slightly eerie in the best way, and full of character. Located in a beautiful and safe area of Bothell, this historic property is a former elementary school turned into a boutique hotel and it delivers a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. The check-in process was smooth and welcoming. The front desk staff were courteous and helpful, and the lobby had a cozy Pacific Northwest feel. The scent of the nearby Fleetwood fireplace added a warm woodsy aroma that made a great first impression. Our room was in a separate building that still retains the essence of an old school with long hallways, classroom-style doors, vintage lighting, and photos of former students and staff lining the walls. The rooms themselves feel like a step back into the 1920s, complete with chandeliers, antique-style decor, and unique touches. Ours was likely a converted office and the bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was clean and spacious with a walk-in shower and ample counter space. While there isn't a free continental breakfast, there are great on-site amenities, and breakfast is available for purchase. It's also worth noting that the room rates are higher than a standard chain hotel (ours was $244 per night), but it's well worth it for the experience. Think of it as part historic tour, part hotel stay with just a hint of "The Shining" vibe that adds to the fun, not fear. Highly recommend if you're looking to stay somewhere north of Seattle that's anything but ordinary.

We went to McMenamins for brunch and had a lovely time! The food was delicious and the portions were generous. My daughter ordered the blackened salmon Caesar salad--it was a huge serving and she had leftovers. She said the salmon was perfectly cooked and full of flavor! My boyfriend had the shrimp and grits with a side of cottage potatoes. He loved it--said the dish was super flavorful and satisfying. I had the huevos rancheros, and it was bomb! Every bite was packed with flavor. My only suggestion would be to add some tortilla chips on the side--it would be perfect for scooping up all the tasty bits that fall off the tostada.

    The sign.

OLD SCHOOL TRANSFORMED TO FUN HOTEL. Fun restaurants and bars to explore. McMenamins is known for preserving and repurposing classic old buildings and institutions into fun hotels and restaurants. Is this a five star hotel? No, but it is an experience like no other. A variety of restaurants and bars to explore. A giant pool. And don't forget to try McMenamins own micro brewed beer. Oh, and bring your dog! You'll have fun. We did. Cheers.

This location is pretty cool and like it better than the one in Portland. Food is pretty good, beer ofc is excellent and their movie theater even plays newly released movies!

I've been to quite a few McMenamins bars and restaurants over the years, but this was my first time staying in one of their hotel rooms. We stayed one night at the Anderson School in Bothell, Washington. It's a converted junior high school and it definitely has those retro school vibes, which is fun. The hallways are filled with interesting signs and displays about the school and local Bothell history. The grounds are nicely landscaped, and there are a multitude of eateries and bars onsite and nearby. We ate at the Nui Nui bar and restaurant onsite, a great choice. It has Balinese decor and tasty food (I got the vegan Jamaican Rice Bowl which was both sweet and savory and I'd definitely recommend it). The Nui Nui is perched above the hotel's indoor pool, an Olympic-sized pool (which is rare for the area) and has big windows overlooking the pool, adding to the tropical vibes. The other big bar/restaurant onsite is the Tavern on the Square, which is pricier. Next to it is the Woodshed, which has pool tables and shuffleboard as well. Smaller bars include The Shed (outside) and the tiny Principal's Office (inside). There's also a movie theater onsite (extra, not free for hotel guests) and a small gift shop with cute home decor items, McMenamins-branded clothing, and beverages. The reason for the 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 was that the hotel room was grossly overpriced for what it was. We paid $360 for one night. Granted, it was a Saturday night during the Christmas holiday period, and there were tons of people around at all the bars for Christmas parties and get-togethers, so that might be why the price was so high. But it was really not justifiable. The room was dark and a little creepy. The heating didn't seem to work properly, so the room stayed quite cold in spite of our best efforts to get it warmer. (When we arrived, the room was 64 degrees and chilly. We had to set it to 76 just to get it up to about 71, where it seemed to top out, and even then it took a few hours to warm up to that.) The curtains didn't pull fully open either, so the room stayed very dark and unpleasant. Maybe we'd have had a better experience if we were staying on a higher floor with brighter light coming in from the windows, not the bottom/basement floor, and maybe not in winter either. But for the price we paid, we just expected more. Hotel guests don't even get any perks at the onsite restaurants or bars -- no discounts at all. In the morning, no breakfast -- just free coffee and tea outside the Principal's Office upstairs. Just seems like a raw deal for $360 a night. Much better to stay at one of the area chain hotels and visit the McMenamin's properties for a meal or drink instead.

Ask the Community - McMenamins Anderson School

Is proof of vaccination required for service at the bothell location?

I don't know but if you are at all concerned it's probably a place to avoid unless tables outdoors are available and the weather cooperates. Also although there reviews rated much higher a while ago it's not great as of late.

What is the vaccination requirement? Asking for a friend.

We were not asked about vaccination status (June 2022) while staying as hotel guests

    Is this kid friendly?

Definitely. My wife and I don't have kids, but we've been going to Anderson School since they opened and I would say it's one of THE MOST kid-friendly places you can go, based on our observations. Lots of "elbow room" for restless kids to "be kids",… Read more

Are they open in the afternoon with indoor seating?

Yes, just following the regulations (wearing a mask indoors until you get to table, socially distanced tables, etc).

Are they open for stay right now with COVID, and is the pool available for use?

The pool is open by hour reservation. I think its 15 people at a time. The hotel is open.

I am thinking of staying overnight with my husband, four year old and one year old, just for fun, and mainly to use the pool. Is the indoor pool nice to use in the winter? How is the hotel for little ones? Thanks in advance for your input!

I was just there at the end of February- the pool is warm and large and a lot of fun!

I have been calling L&I, and they may not even have a valid license for these elevators. Oh, they have 2, but one never worked, and the other one keeps going out. In my opinion (and physical evidence) this hotel is becoming more dangerous. I am trying to get out, but can't afford it as I am paying all my medical expenses out of pocket before I can settle with the first claim. I would avoid booking a room here until their elevator situation is fully corrected. They spent a lot of money (lipstick on a pig) repainting this hotel and doing other repairs to make it look good for the Summer soccer games in 2026. But they are not replacing the nonfunctioning elevator or getting the one that keeps causing problems fixed in time to prevent further endangering my health and safety during the upcoming games or in the meantime. They laid new white floors but wouldn't force the contractors to remove the stains from them. So it looks like shit stains on the floors. Then, when I said something, they blamed it on the guests not walking on paper, even though they never supplied paper for guests to walk on and had the floors open so we could access the trash rooms while the renovations were going on. When the renovations were done, I got info from the contractor on the products used to remove them from my room and sent an email about it all the way up to the general manager with photos, but the stains are on every floor, and even in the front lobby. Nothing. I have supplied them with photos and included them in this review. I think that speaks to their focus on booking fees and not guest safety. I would especially warn those of you who are elderly, have back or hip injuries, or other frailties to book elsewhere. I came in with a minor back injury, and after 7 1/2 years, I can't work for the last two years, I walk with a cane, plus have had multiple steroid injections to keep from major pain, plus now the elevator injuries. I hope I make it out alive. I am stuck and on SS until they settle my first claim or I'd be gone already. Stay away.

Not a fan Very dark…read moreoutside and in the parking lot. Signage is hard to see from the road.

I stayed here for 2 months or so and had 2 different rooms. My first room was pre-renovation (2nd…read morefloor), and my second room was newly renovated (6th floor). Aside from maybe the clean carpet, bigger TV, and some light fixtures, I actually liked most things about the older room more. It's like Hilton poured a ton of money into updating the place with cheaper stuff. Older bed was more comfortable, older shower with a door was way better than new shower with a Walmart curtain rod and too short curtain, older AC/heater worked better, older fridge was better, older desk/chair was better, older couch was more comfortable, older TV had better sound. The staff was always really nice except for one person but I think he may have been disabled so gotta give him a break. Parking fees here are killer. Small laundry room given the size of the hotel, plus there were always machines broken. Big gym with decent equipment. Thin walls, you could hear most of what neighbors were saying but muffled. Being on the top floor at least saved hearing footsteps overhead, but the construction in the building would still rattle the walls. Pet friendly for a fee, they were nice enough to discount some fees after I got wrongly charged twice when switching rooms. The dog poop bags were out for almost a month but eventually got restocked. Hardly any grass around the building but a little bit along the busy street. Close to tons of shops, restaurants, groceries, etc. and the freeways. The breakfast options were nothing special but I've had worse. Housekeeping available every couple days or upon request, but they weren't very good about coming at the requested times. Overall the stay was fine despite the gripes. At least I earned a crap ton of Hilton points. Too bad the renovation set things backwards.
