Came in today just to grab a couple of 1lb tanks of propane. Highly doubtful I will ever return. Peggy my checker was absolutely rude. I said hello to her. Got no response. After the transaction I politely said thank you. No response. I even went as far as to say have a nice day. Again no response. Aside from taking my money she didn't even acknowledge my existence. I went to get a BBQ that was on sale at my store in Sumner, couple hundred off, great deal. After waiting for 30 plus minutes, the only one they had was the floor model, no problem, except they couldn't/wouldn't remove the side tables so it could fit in my SUV. Directed to Tacoma where they had 2 of the BBQ's. Could not have had a more frustrating experience with indifferent or incompetent staff. Three different staff, with terrible customer service. Knowledgeable and quality staff used to be what set McLendon's apart, now their as bad as Lowe's or Home Depot. read more

This is by far my favorite hardware store! I always end up here after going to the other two major chains like an idiot! Today Damian helped me out so much! I had a broken clip on an outdoor recessed light that still worked so instead of sending me back to those other two places because McClendons didn't sell what I needed he took the time to actually go back into their onsite "Pop's Shop" and make me a new clip for the light!! I went to the Tacoma, WA. Store To see if The key shop had or could cut keys for my Suzuki car door. including cutting a gas tank cap key. Plus I needed an extra key for my GMC truck. I was told they could. I Handed over my keys to be made as replacements. They did not have the Suzuki door keys or Franz Gas Cap keys. They did cut a key for my GMC. The key did not fit. I had forgotten to take back my Suzuki door key. By the Time I realized I had forgotten it. The store had closed. for the last could of days, I tried calling the store more than several times. Only to get a voice message,saying to press 1 on my phone to speak to a store representative. First two times. Never spoke to anyone they just hung up on me. Next two times I spoke to a woman and she said she would check to see where the key was at the key shop. Even with her. I was hung up on. I generally will, most always support my small locally own business. But, that is rapidly changing. McLendon is no longer a family run business. It is "sad" to say. The customer service that I had enjoyed when it was Family own. Is no longer available. Having been in the Tacoma Store, several times after the family sold out. The Happy Smiles or smiling Faces are not there. Customer Service is poor at best. I actually get and receive better service with smiling faces at Lowe's and Home Depot. They have an excellent selection, much larger than Ace on Pearl, but the service isn't quite as good, and the prices are premium. We are regular customers when we need something more specialized. It is quite convenient to the North End, compared to Home Depot and Lowe's. read more

It's all over for McLendon Hardware. What was once a proud privately owned Northwest tradition, has now become embarrassingly incompetent. They were bought out I believe three years ago. I've given it a good year and a half as far as the change. Customer service horrible, stores messy. Stock low In some areas. Confused check out people. Random check out style. On and on. Not a big deal they'll be gone in five years. What is changed? Years ago you would ask a question and four people would come running and know exactly what you needed and where. Now they look up try to find the row, point you down the path and still look like they are not really sure if they've given you the right direction. read more

I just bought a floor model bbq unknowingly without an ignitor switch. I get it back to my house while entertaining people. The bbq will not ignite. I figure out the problem and go back to the store to retrieve the switch. The staff tells me the part is on order and that bbq was supposed to be pulled from the floor and not be sold. Long story short I go to Mclendons because I don't want to go to Lowes or Home Depot. If your guys customer service sucks just as bad as them, I don't see myself going to this location again. Nobody seemed to care, they offered me 10% off another bbq but who cares right. read more

Had to grab some new wire for my dryer and the man that helped me was knowledgeable, friendly and informative. In and out quick and easy.

This rating is based on knowledge of plumbing issues. Only one person in the store could assist me in a knowledgeable fashion with shower remodeling. This individual acted like he did not really have time for my questions. Three other sales representatives in the Plumbing area claimed to have no knowledge of plumbing beyond referring me to someone else. Very disappointed with the information I received and not on par with other quality McClendon hardware stores. read more

Came here a couple of times with my pops in search of some stuff for the house. Every time we go I'm amazed at how orderly everything is. Was doing a little DIY project for a bubble fountain, and I can't say enough about the customer service I received from Mel. I really didn't know what I was doing but had an idea. After years of DIY projects in multiple homes, I have largely hung up the tool belt and passed along the power tools. I just moved to Tacoma from the East Coast and bought a home here that needs a few fixes and I am so glad to find McLendon Hardware. Excellent customer service and great selection/prices are a huge relief from the inconsistency in the national chain stores (part of my project burn-out). I'm a very happy customer! read more

If I could give McLendon on Pearl zero stars, I would. Unfortunately, Yelp doesn't allow for this so 1 star it is. I have shopped here countless times over the years and, honestly, this store leaves so much to be desired in terms of customer service and help from the staff. That being said, my desire to keep my money in the local economy overrides my common sense sometimes so I have continued to shop here despite the lack of helpfulness and/or availability of staff. However, my latest experience in the final straw and I will never spend another dollar with this company. On 07/04/2017, my mother in law and I stopped in to McLendon to purchase a small piece of butcher block to complete a project that I had started for my new home. The first problem with my order was with the associate that placed the order, Tom P.. From the second we set foot in the "work house", he acted as though we were inconveniencing him by asking him to place the order. That should have been the first hint at what was to come. We placed the order anyway. When the order due date had come and gone, I started placing calls to McLendon to find out where the butcher block was and when I could expect to receive it. After placing the first call, I was told it would be in the following Thursday. Ok, Things happen, I get it. By the time Thurdsay, July 20th, had rolled around, there was still no butcher block and no answers as to where it was or when I could expect it. I called back the following day to speak to someone and was told I would get a call back. There was no return phone call at all. On Monday, July 31st, I called and spoke to Tom P., who then told me he was at lunch (at 10 a.m.) and would call me back. By 1 pm, I still hadn't heard back and decided to get in touch with Patrick, the store manager. By the end of a very long phone call with both Tom and Patrick, there was still no resolution. Apparently it was impossible to replace the order with their vendor and they were not able to locate the original order. I was again told that I would receive a call back because I asked Tom to see if he work with an alternate vendor for the block. Again, there was no call back after a week of waiting so I decided to just cancel the order (a gift from my mother in law). Both Patrick and Tom P. were insistent that it was the vendor's fault (refusing to accept responsibility at all for the mistake) and both acted as though they couldn't have cared less about helping me or finding a replacement piece for my project. I am very, VERY disappointed with McLendon's and will take my business to either Lowe's or Home Depot, when I can receive equally crappy service but with a greater selection of items at (usually) much lower prices. read more

Great place to shop, the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly at this location. They are worth driving out of the way to visit here as they can get damn near anything and have most everything. The parking here is great and the entrances to get in are easy compared to some of the surrounding businesses. read more

On my most recent visit, I needed a pipe coupler and they were out of stock. I went to the register with the rest of my items and one of the employees went to find a suitable substitute and brought it to me at the register just as I was checking out and it was the right part. I have never had such good customer service at any of the other local hardware stores. read more

In the process of a bathroom diy remodel, I've been to Lowes and Home Depot dozens of times over the past 3 months. Most often there was nobody around to ask for help.They were great as far as having lots of choices but they don't come anywhere close to the customer service I got from McLendon's! At McL.there was no waiting for help - they came to me! Having all kinds of questions, there was always somebody with good advice. If one person couldn't answer my question/s that person found someone who could. I found their prices as good as the other stores and Tom (in the "house") was fantastic with advice and getting me the best prices. Generally I like to shop at Mclendons because the location is convenient but any time I actually need help from the staff its a nightmare. I was just in to have a piece of glass cut to to match a shelf that broke in my china hutch. I was sent to "Pop's Workshop" in the back and greeted by what seemed to be the most sullen employee in the store. I said I needed a shelf cut and was initially told it could be done and then when I again said it was for a shelf I was told it could not be done and that I would have to go all the way out to Puyallup for a piece of tempered glass that would have to be special ordered. The whole time I was made to feel like my presence there was an inconvenience. I then asked if I could get a piece of plexi glass cut instead. Thats when the man in the white hat got involved and told me no with so much condescension that he was almost laughing at me. It's not the first time that I've been sent back there to ask a simple question only to have the same man act like I was asking him to move a mountain. Its very disappointing that this happened at Mclendons because I like to shop local whenever possible. I think I will have to take my business to Home Depot where the service is just as bad but at least the prices are lower. read more

Last Friday I was looking for sweet potato vine and called the new Tacoma McLendon store. The operator called the garden center via the radio and was told that they had them and the 4" pots were $1.19 each. I drove over (not in my neighborhood) found them, choose 10 of them of headed to the check out. They rang up at $2.49 and I told the cashier I thought that was wrong as I had just been quoted $1.19. He said no, they're $2.49. Period. No apology, no attempt to reduce the price or try to compromise. In my book that's the equivalent of bait and switch so I left them and left the store. I was very disappointed and frustrated about the time I spent for nothing. It was embarrassing to have to argue my point and be treated like that. I'll never ever return and certainly never recommend McLendon's. read more

My husband and I are painting our kitchen walls and cabinets. The first color we tried we weren't happy with so we took it back and they exchanged it for us with no problem and were happy to help us find the perfect color. Shad in the paint department was so knowledgeable and helpful. If it wasn't for him i would've felt overwhelmed and confused, but he had all the answers we needed and steered us in the right direction. We left the store feeling excited to conquer our project! We needed a custom handle for a water pulley system. Mclendon's staff worked to find a creative solution and when they found the solution they put it together for us. Putting it together included extra drilling through a piece of wood and their time to put the handle together at no additional charge. These guys are awesome! read more

I recently stopped at tire store to see if they could change a tire on my utility dolly. They said if I could find a new washer they would change it. Apparently it they ruin the washer when removing it. So I stopped at McLendon's to find the washer. Well they took the washer off without ruining it, and replaced my tire, no charge. Generally a big fan, especially remembering the old old Renton store. Two gripes though.... 1) Wish the McLendon web site had the weekly flyer on it. Get with it web personnel. 2) No Fishing Dept at the Tacoma store. What gives, just down the road is Point Defiance and all of the salt water fishing and of course it would be nice to stop and get some fresh water fishing supplies before heading out across the bridge. read more
