Not new to McLean's but as usual I had a great experience. It was fairly busy but we were greeted and seated right away. Our server was friendly and attentive to our needs. Great place to start the morning! I always enjoy the "biggest breakfast" which starts with three eggs, choice of meat, juice, bread, and a breakfast side. On this visit the eggs were cooked a perfect over medium, the sausage patties were tasty (they also have links), and the juice was fine. My ordered rye toast turned out to be wheat, and the grits were okay. Everything was the right temperature. Lunch fare was also available, including burgers and some deli sandwiches. Maybe next time. Service was great, kitchen was reasonably fast, and the place was clean. Parking in the rear was nearly full as always, but there is some street parking as well. We will keep it on the breakfast rotation. read more

Your grandparent's favorite RVA diner. Super unassuming from the outside and quite impressive on the inside! This place was much bigger than I expected it to be - plenty of seating and with an enormous menu. A bit pricier than I expected for your neighborhood diner-type food, but my friend really appreciated the smaller-size chicken and waffles, and I really enjoyed my simple breakfast sammy. Friendly staff that make you feel at-home. Overall would go again - especially based on location alone, it is so dang convenient! read more

Very over priced. After noticing how expensive breakfast was we immediately regretted choosing this place .. It's basically an over priced blue plate restaurant. There is no way I was getting a basic Breakfast plate at these prices, So ended getting biscuits and gravy. The gravy was cold and the biscuits must have been delivered in a bag to the restaurant. to add insult to injury, there was a 20% gratuity automatically add'd to the bill . We didn't even get coffee cause that was too expensive too so I had to pay an additional 20% for the waitress to write down my order and set the plate down in front of me. We were going to give the waitress a tip because it's the right thing to do but to have it automatically added like that I think is wrong anyway bad experience, waste of money we'll never go back. read more

Huge family oriented diner has wonderful Eggs Benedict and very good breakfast. I haven't been there in years and went back after my sons moved to Richmond. It was a Sunday so it was rather busy, but staff was efficient. Food came out early with a look. read more

It's the perfect spot for a good old-fashioned greasy breakfast! You feel like you're entering a time capsule when you go there, but in the best way possible. The staff is very friendly, and you get your food so quickly. While staying in Scott's Addition, I stopped in here for breakfast on a weekday morning. The dining room there is quite large and I can see how they get very popular and crowded. The menu is loaded with all the typical breakfast usuals, nothing really stood out as being particularly special or homemade. I opted for their breakfast burrito and it was decent. The potatoes that came with it were very bland and basic. As for service, my server wasn't very attentive, he was more concerned with eating his breakfast. The other ladies working were helpful and attentive, keeping my coffee filled. The place did have a nice, family feel to it. I'm sure it's normally really spot-on, both service and food. One thing I didn't like was that they charge gratuity. Seems like there's a better way to do this (charge more for the food or don't do it at all). read more

This is my first time in at McLean's since they extended their hours--even though I still made it in before the extended hours. Anyhow, I am a solid breakfast customer here, and was looking forward to trying the dinner food. My mom got the liver and onions with collard greens, mashed potatoes and gravy and a biscuit. She must've loved it since she ate almost every bite. I got the chicken fried chicken, mac and cheese, lima beans and roll. I enjoyed everything but the lima beans, which weren't cooked long enough and had very little seasoning. The mac and cheese was a little runny, but flavorful. And the chicken was on point, but could've used more gravy. Prices are great, and we'll definitely be back when in the mood for classic diner fare. read more

Parking- eek, 2 stars? Restaurant- yum!!! all the stars! We entered from the rear parking door and were sat right away- lunch rush in full swing, we ordered pretty quickly and drooled over the huge plates of wonderful smelling food passing by before ours arrived. My Barry Bird- turkey, bacon melt on fresh sourdough bread was simply a delight for the tastebuds- I remember just loving the bread! John ordered country fried steak with onion rings and apple sauce and the corn bread- good gracious, it was huge! You could tell this was the spot for locals- the servers knew customers by name! I came to McLean's on Broad Street in Richmond with my girlfriend around 11:30 AM for brunch -- something we were genuinely excited about. She had been before, and since I love southern-style food like biscuits and gravy, we figured it was finally time to try it together. No wait, so we were hyped. That excitement came to a hard stop the moment we walked in. We were greeted by a woman at the front who immediately made a hand gesture toward my girlfriend's chest, motioning for her to "cover up." My girlfriend was wearing sweatpants, a tank top, and a purple cardigan -- completely appropriate for a casual brunch spot. The gesture was incredibly rude, uncalled for, and downright disrespectful. Let's be clear: this isn't some fancy, fine-dining restaurant with a dress code. It's a casual breakfast and lunch place. It's BROAD STREET in RICHMOND, where all walks of life should be welcomed to sit down and eat some damn food. The judgment was not only unprofessional but just plain ugly. When we received the bill, my girlfriend politely asked our waitress who that woman up front was, and the waitress responded with a passive-aggressive, "She's the owner," as if that made the experience better. It didn't. It made it worse. The food was okay, but nothing is good enough to justify being made to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. We will not be back, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who values basic human decency. read more

We were charged $51 for breakfast for two. 20% gratuity added without my knowledge (they said it was posted on the door) $3.10 for coffee (wasn't hot), $16.15 for the Pancake Platter which consisted of two eggs, two pancakes(tasted like flour), one scoop of home fries(undercooked), a small fruit bowl of apples (way too much cinnamon) and a small piece of country ham. What better place to come to after a night out than a diner like McLeans Restaurant. ***LOCATION*** I don't know how I never noticed this on Broad. My friends live right next to it so this is how it was brought to my attention. It's closer to the Scott's Addition side of Broad in an unassuming yellow building. ***EXPERIENCE*** This is the ultimate spot to come to for weekend diner food. Their brunch menu is great and there isn't a wait during normal high wait times on weekends. They were kind and quick about coffee refills. The service was wonderful. I tried their chocolate chip pancakes (very diner-like, but made me happy). Got scrambled eggs, bacon (on the crispier side), and home fries too. ***PRICE*** A great bang for your buck. Things range from $7-15 here. ***CONCLUSION*** If you want comfort/American food, this is your spot. It reminded me a lot of the diners we used to go to as teenagers on weekends and brought a beautiful sense of nostalgia. The food is what'd you'd expect from a diner, but enjoyable. read more

Came here on a Wednesday morning and it was pretty full! Seems to be a popular local spot. The food was pretty good. I got the breakfast burrito, and while it was nothing exceptional, I would definitely get it again. The potatoes weren't great; they could use a bit of crispiness. The prices are decent and portions are pretty good. It is worth noting that they automatically add a 20% tip, but at least the service is great. My water never went below halfway and they were constantly asking to top off coffee. I would definitely be willing to revisit McLean's and try some of their other dishes. read more

I used to come here regularly decades ago when I worked in the area. I remember it as being kind of dive-like with cheap, good eats. It's really different now. I'm not sure if they painted, got new windows, or changed up the seating, but it feels more open and light now and not like a dive. The food was slow, not hot, and mediocre. I ordered eggs, bacon, and grits, so nothing hard, but it was just barely okay. I won't be back because they added a MANDATORY 20% tip. It is not announced when you walk in, on the menu, or anywhere. It just shows up on the check. A "tip" is a gratuity. You don't get to demand it. It's a gift. When it's not a gift, it's stolen, coerced, or robbed. And then they had the nerve to leave an open space for an additional tip. WTH? Nope. Never again, McLean's. Americans are generous - especially those of us who worked in food service. So, it's not about the 20% (even though I picked up the check for the table and it wasn't a small amount). It's about the entitlement. read more

In all my years of living in RVA this is my first time at Mclean's and I can see why they are a staple in the city. We sat at the bar, where the servers were friendly and attentive. I ordered the Sweet and Salty platter with French toast and bacon, added a side of salmon cakes and an orange juice. I was very impressed with the French toast-perfect combo of flavor and texture. Crispy and soft at the same time and was very tasty. The bacon was cooked perfectly (fat rendered and lean parts not overcooked) and did not disappoint. The salmon cakes were a bit too salty for my taste, so I only ate one, but they were fried well, so I think if they dialed the salt down on them, they would've been an 7.5/10. The atmosphere was very Richmond, with many different types of working folks enjoying their meals. Definitely will be coming back. read more

This place offers all day breakfast, this place offers such a wide range. The waitress was super helpful and kind. I ordered two catfish, eggs, biscuits, and home fries.
