John D. McGurk's Irish Pub and Garden, Saint Louis

My VP's credit card definitely took a beating tonight. Our whole team showed up, and with an open bar in play, things escalated quickly. Beer flowed freely, a few rounds of shots made their way around, and the food kept coming. Even with what must have been close to sixty people ordering, drinking, and talking over each other, the staff here handled it all with impressive grace and efficiency. They kept the energy up and made sure no one was left waiting too long, which is no small feat in a crowd that size. I went with a Guinness, naturally. It's my go-to in a setting like this. To go with it, I ordered a Reuben sandwich. I skipped most of the bread and passed on the chips, but the filling was absolutely spot-on. Hot, tender corned beef layered with melted Swiss cheese, a touch of sauerkraut, and just the right amount of mustard. It was rich, savory, and satisfying--basically perfection on a plate. We'll definitely need to come back to McGurk's when it's a smaller group so we can enjoy things at a more relaxed pace. But for a big team night like this, they really pulled it off. Very impressed with how smoothly it all went. [Review 1187 of 2025 - 452 in Missouri - 24739 overall]

McGurk's Pub review today on St.Paddy's day was appropriate but I did go there today but a few weeks ago in search of good fish and chips. Every now and then we try to find an equally delicious fish and chips my wife and I had at John Long's Chippery in Belfast a few years ago. The chippery's fish was cod with a light batter ,crispy not crunchy, soft melt in your mouth flavor. The chips are French fries lightly salted with a soft brown color and crispy texture. So far the closest match to John Longs fish and chips was Edible and Essentials restaurant in So St. Louis on Hampton. Unfortunately Matt B., owner and chef closed his doors and moved to the Ronald McDonald House as Master chef for all the Ronald McDonald houses organization. I hope the client's there are getting great fish and chips during Lent. As far as what is the best fish and chips by default after John Long's in Belfast is John D. McGurks. Their fish were 4 modest sized fillers with a choice of French fries or their homemade chips. It was the perfect portion of fish with a buttery flavor and a light crispy batter. I could not pass up the homemade chips they are iconic. Enjoy your St. Patrick's Day and make it to McGurk's soon. You will not be disappointed maybe even try the Rueben or Guinness Irish Stew. Two of my favorites. Sláinte.

Fish n Chips. Fish was okay, I'd rather have actual fries

I love Irish Pubs and McGurks has the look and feel of a solid Irish Pub in STL and I love going there for pints especially after my beloved Dubliner in STL closed down five years or so ago. That's why it pains me to write a less than stellar review but it's mainly because of the food. So I ordered the fish & chips and the quality of the fish was good, but it wasn't a traditional fish n chips plate you'd expect of an English or Irish Pub since the chips were actually pub potato chips although that were cooked in-house. Also on their plate was three small pieces of breaded fish which tasted good and I didn't leave hungry but just barely. Suffice to say I would've preferred to have one giant piece of cod or other white fish along with fries as opposed to pub chips and I think it should've been an option but yep I know now that I should've read the menu before ordering. Also noted that in a past visit I've had the corn beef and cabbage there and it was good but was a real basic dish. While the corned beef tasting good it was about as good as the same dish made at home and nothing stood out about it. I'll enjoy stopping into McGurk's for pints of Guinness. There's also a very nice patio out back. Finally I have to say the servers there are attentive and friendly.

McGurk's is one of the finest bar/restaurants in the area. The patio is a must if you can find a seat out there. If not, don't worry you'll have much to look at inside as well. My family and I have been coming here for years. This is where I took my fiancé for our first date and it made for a memorable night. The food is excellent. From the bacon wrapped shrimp to the burgers, and sandwiches it's all good. Come thirsty as well as they have so many great drinks on tap.

We came with family on a Saturday late morning. We were promptly seated. Our waitress was cordial and polite and serviced us well! We split the Reuben and onion rings, big enough for two people. The Reuben was good but very dry; I had difficulty swallowing it.. There was a party close to our table having a birthday party and the kids were yelling and screaming until they left. We graciously received a to go cup for our iced tea!!

Went for a beer and ended up having an early dinner as well. Guinness was poured properly and wife had a Brick River Cider. We had the Grilled Chicken Chef Salad and it was great, just the right amount of dressing and the chicken was very good. Came with fresh avocado and boiled eggs as well, just delicious. Also had the potato soup which was also tasty but it could have been a little hotter. Bartenders were super nice as well. Could have been a little warmer inside but it was the first cold day of the year.

I had a bowl of the potato soup to warm me up. And the Grilled chicken chef salad. Tastes great and filling too. McGurk's is a St. Louis staple!

Wow, I really liked this place. It was recommended by a friend. Stopped in for an early dinner. They play Irish music and have what you would expect on the menu to include it a Guinness stew, potato soup, and corned beef and cabbage. I would recommend trying the potato soup. It was rich and flavorful, although quite salty. If you can't handle a lot of salt, then I would maybe steer clear. Their mashed potatoes are also pretty flavorful and I would add them as a side to any meal. Their Guinness stew was delicious. I had really rich flavors and a hearty portion so I was able to eat it for a few days after. We were set right away and the server was friendly and knowledgeable.

On our last stop of the day, we made our way to McGurk's. I've only been here a handful of times but this would be my first time for live music. I was still a wee bit hungry but wanted something light to snack on. The server said the crisps were really good and were big enough to share. I got an order of that and stuck with water. The crisps came out shortly and they were even better than she described. They were seasoned (which a treat because not all pub chips are the same), light, and you def. can't eat just one. For a Sunday night, this place was packed. The atmosphere was lively and made me feel as if I was somewhere else other than Stl. This band in particular had quite a few fans and one of them went around asking for donations. Every now and then I have cash, but Sunday wasn't one of those days. When she got around to our table, I pointed to my card that was in the bill folder to pay and explained that's all I had, otherwise I would have paid my bill in cash. She then scoffed and said, "who doesn't carry cash on them? Not that I don't believe you but I'm old school." I'm thinking, "yeah, you look every bit of your age and additionally, it's a donation, which means it's optional." I shouldn't be chastised and made to feel bad for not being able to contribute. If that's how it's going to be going forward, I may re think going to see live music here, or at least go when a different band is playing. Aside from being accosted by the Karen groupie of that band, I enjoyed my time.

I hadn't been to McGurk's since college, because pubs really aren't my vibe anymore; however, we had to go on Mother's Day due to the original place we were planning to go having too long of a wait time. What a delicious meal we had! I was so pleasantly surprised by the taste of the food. The server was nice and gave us lots of time to relax and enjoy. Would definitely come back to grab a bite to eat here in the future.

Friday night and the weather was fabulous so of course there was a small wait (15-20 min) but we were lucky enough to find a spot at the bar instead. Not a huge range of options for food but what they do have are delicious. I will never not order the spinach artichoke dip! Drinks are good and the vibes are great. One of my favorite patios to visit when the weather is perfect for outdoor dining.

Ambiance. Ambiance. Ambiance. 5 stars for the patio! We visited on a Sunday late afternoon, around 3pm. Parked on the street and walked a couple of blocks. Entered through side patio entrance. No wait. They cleared a table and we were seated immediately by the waterfall/koi pond. Loved it! Three outdoor bars, plenty of TVs, but also beautiful flowers, water, and a peacefulness that I really appreciated. The drinks came quick. Server was attentive, even though she was very busy. My husband had the Cajun chicken sandwich and onion rings. I had the Cajun chicken pasta. Both were very good! The sandwich had more of a kick to it than the pasta, but still very good flavor! We can't wait for our next visit!

I was honestly surprised at how busy it was when we arrived at 4pm on a Thursday. I wasn't expecting that kind of crowd, but thankfully I had made a reservation, so we were able to get seated right away. As much as I would've loved to sit on the patio, it didn't look like anything was available, although if you can snag a patio table, I'd definitely recommend it. Inside was packed, with quite a few larger groups as well. Our table was right in the middle of the restaurant, so we had a good view of everything going on. It was loud, but in a fun, lively way. Our server was really friendly and quick. She checked in on us often and gave some helpful recommendations. We ordered drinks and a couple of apps to share, and she left us a full bottle of cold water, which was such a nice touch. We got the pretzel monkey bread, french fries (the best) and the artichoke bean dip. We weren't planning to stay for dinner, just wanted some snacks. The food came out fast and honestly looked too good to wait on. I loved the monkey bread, the pretzel bites had a great crisp to them, and the sauces they served with it were really good. The bean dip was good too, just not as much my thing since I'm not a big fan of dill, so I left most of that for everyone else. Once we wrapped up, we were able to split the check and head out pretty quickly. I really appreciate places that still make it easy to split checks, and even more when you can just pay right at the table with those handheld POS devices.

You could see this place being lit on St. Patrick's Day…read more It's a deceptively large space, perhaps owing to it being situated on a street that's more along the lines of an alley, along with a few government and industrial buildings. It already smells vaguely of mop water, so it wouldn't be an issue if someone barfed. This place pours a good Guinness draft. Not that I'm an expert. The last few times I had it, it was in the weird cans with the dispenser thing inside of them, years ago. Probably decades ago. But I appreciate the fact that it's served kinda warm, and without too much of a head, meaning you get more beer for your $10, or whatever they're charging you. The food isn't half-bad either. All the photos on Yelp make it look gross, like maybe they were taken in low light, or a long time ago. Possibly both. It was all lit up when I was there, at maybe 8 PM on a Wednesday evening. Does this place turn into some sort of nightlife destination for local boomers? I might drive by this evening and see if I see a bunch of golf carts parked out front. You can't go wrong with a burger in a place like this, so that was the plan. They offer something called the Pub Burger, which comes on an English muffin. It's hard to imagine how that could be a good idea, but I briefly considered it anyway, for the sake of citizen food journalism. The problem is, I would have had to eat it. There was also something called the Llywelyn, served on toasted brioche, which is what I probably should have gotten. I got something called the Diner, which was fine. As its name suggests, it's a bog standard double cheeseburger, like something you might get in, erm, a diner. It was good but not great, but I've been spoiled when it comes to burgers lately, having hit Hi Pointe, Shake Shack and Salt & Smoke all within the past few weeks. The ingredients were really good, including the vegetable toppings, which were fresh and expertly sliced. I especially liked the razor-thin onion slices. The thing that would have really elevated it is if the burger patties had a little char to them. The fish and chips looked good, and I appreciate the fact that they already had malt vinegar out on the table, as if it's a standard condiment. I might have to try that, if I return. I don't know how often I'd eat here otherwise, but a group I belong to meets here on occasion, so that's not outside the realm of possibility.

However, more soccer fans were on the patio, smoking and wishing the US game to be put on. As soon as they accommodated this request, it got louder. Our waitress was lovely but also couldn't hear us outside at times. I ordered steak and brie sliders (appetizers) while he ordered the famous steak sandwich. The sliders came in a trio, and I ordered a side of sweet potato fries. The portion of fries was massive, and each slider is cooked to your liking and came with 3-4 chunks per slider. I did wish it had more brie and caramelized onions, but it was still good. If they ever want to elevate the recipe or make an offering, garlic butter buns would set this off even more! He enjoyed his steak and cheese sandwich, and we tried their seasonal blackberry margarita with our meal. I hadn't been here in a while but will avoid it during peak game times of the year. I personally can't handle a lot of noise while dining!

Not only were we not granted an exception on the checks as consolation for not being able to order french fries, there was no indication that this had even occurred to our server. This is precisely the level of temerity we need to inculcate in young women in our society, and I'd encourage her to apply for a job at the women's-only sports bar a few doors down if and when it ever opens. It'd be tragic if she wasn't there if and when I return, but I'd appreciate the fact that she has a greater mission. Hopefully, the deep fryer is working. It being out of commission naturally limited the number of things on the menu we could order. We were only told that we couldn't order anything that required a deep fryer, not given a modified menu or anything. I started going through each item and imagining how it might be prepared, but I couldn't muster the psychological bandwidth to continue. Hit my Cash App if you appreciate the amount of unpaid emotional labor I was compelled to contribute. It occurred to me that I might just get a burger and a side salad, but then I saw that they carry a club sandwich. I love a good club sandwich, and I figured it might make for a light, refreshing alternative, given the weather. There's an option to get a cup of soup for $1.50 extra as a side with your sandwich (no, they didn't offer to eat the charge), and I figured that might go well with my sandwich. I was kicking myself when they brought out someone else's order with the side salad. It looked really good. The Frisco Burger, or whatever they're calling it, looked good too. Meanwhile, the BBQ Beef & Cheddar Soup--the soup du jour (that's French), according to Flo--looked gross, like something your dog might cough up. But damn it was good! It was more beef than anything else. A large bowl of it might actually be too much food. (I'd still eat it, natch.) The overall flavor profile was along the lines of a good french onion soup. It was a reminder that I need to be ordering soup in restaurants more often. I wish the club sandwich was cut into little triangles and fanned out on the plate in some elaborate configuration, like at a place where rich old ladies have lunch, but I guess that wouldn't have been in keeping with the theme. Instead, it was served on the world's thickest Texas toast, with the world's dullest steak knife protruding from its center. This sounds like hyperbole, but I may have honestly been served the equivalent of half a loaf of bread. It was much more bread than I required, but at least it was fresh and delicious, as were all the other ingredients. Turkey used for sandwiches is almost never remarkable, but this was surprisingly great, as good as anything you'd get served as an entree unto itself. Nothing about this place suggests that it would have such good food, but it just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. The decor, the overall vibe and the lack of hospitality might not be for everyone, but don't let that deter you.

We got cheese curds for the table and I got the hot honey mac and cheese. The food was delicious. They had a retro movie playing and lots of cute decor. It was super fun to sit there and enjoy the ambiance. The service was also quick and good. Will be coming back.

Lively atmosphere, bartenders were welcoming and interactive. We ordered the Hot Cheese curds as an appetizer, and I got the Obscura as me beer of choice. Not going to lie, the cheese curds were as advertised! They were hot! Not so much that I couldn't handle but don't take them lightly, they are good. They came drizzled with a good ranch. The beer was great, especially with the hot cheese curds. Ordered the Friday Fish Sando with no cheese. Came out in a timely manner, large and crispy! It was messy in the best way. Crispy, beer battered cod, lettuce, and house made tarter. It was juicy on the inside with none of the batter mush you can sometimes get with fried fish, loved the house made tarter, all-around great sandwich. The fries were on point, too. Crispy but not greasy. Great space, friendly staff, good food!

The bartenders were so friendly and helpful in choosing which beers to order. The kitchen is also phenomenal and I love coming here for their crispy chicken sandwich. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed, so we parked across the street at side project pizza. Tables ranged from families with small children to friends watching march madness. There was a small wait for the food but it was worth it! We will be back soon

We all arrived fairly close together, so we just started filling in seats as we arrived. The had us at the back of the restaurant at a banquet seat with tables and additional seats on the outside. It was a little tight, but we worked it out. The hostess was nice when welcoming us in and getting us going. Our server was Tera, she had our large group plus other tables, so she was doing her best to coordinate. We shared menu's, they had regular menus and special menus for Valentines Day. Tara was great with keeping track of the couples when ordering. I ordered the Butcher Board as an appetizer to share with others. Everyone really enjoyed it, especially the toasted bread. The salami, sausage and Braunschweiger. There was a buffalo chicken terrine that was different but good. Grain mustard aioli and house made pickles rounded out the board. I also ordered a cherry margarita as my first of two drinks. The second one was a Hugo Spritz. Both were ok, not great. I ordered the Tenderloin from the Valentine menu. It came with fingerling potatoes and green beans with a sauce. It was delicious! The beef so tender and flavorful. The meal was superb. To go packaging was great and came in a brown bag with handles that makes it easy to carry. We had a great time, great food and service.

There was a 20-30 minute wait so we found seats at the bar and ordered cocktails. Very good. Very strong. The Block is a great space. Tall ceilings, warm & inviting, perhaps a little low lighting for us challenged folks, but nice, easy to read menus made up for it. A busser brought us water and shortly behind him was Laura-Beth, (our server) with a big smile and menus. After explaining the menu, specials, and taking our drink orders she left us to think about our choices. The menu is a little limited but includes sandwiches as well as entrees including fish option.. Being a "butcher" restaurant we both opted for the ribeye, medium rare. The steak comes only with fries which I ordered while my date went for whipped potatoes. I also went for a side of spinach. We also split a Block Salad as a starter. Choosing to split the Block Salad was a good idea. It was more than enough for two. It was great version of a chopped salad with fresh greens, bacon, smoked ham, egg, house-smoked cheddar, tomatoes, red onion, dressed with just enough buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it and just the right amount of salad. Only criticism is not salt and pepper on the table. Probably by design but disappointing. Next came our steaks and sides. We both ordered medium-rare. Her steak was a little under but close enough. My steak was raw in the center. I should have said something but there wasn't so much it was inedible for me. Better under than over! The seasoned fries were good and the whipped potatoes very good were delicious. The fresh spinach was cooked perfect, but under seasoned. All in all, good sides. We finished with Irish Coffee and vanilla ice cream. Kudos to the staff A special thank you to our server Laura-Beth. You were spot on friendly, courteous, attentive, and made our evening great and not just good. Overall, a good place, A bit expensive but where isn't these days. Well worth a try if you haven't.
