Fish and Chips - December 2025
    Kimberly W.

The Scottish Arms is back, after more than a year away and new ownership. Based upon the crowd on the windy night I stopped in, it seems a lot of other people missed them as well. We shared a Scotch Egg, and then had Fish and Chips and Bangers & Mash. All of which tasted to us like they did before. They are barely a month into this new era, so the drink and food menus are relatively limited still. I'm hoping that they eventually bring back a bit more, but it's a good start. They've been adjusting their hours as they get everything figured out, so check their socials before you go.

A very nice upscale hole in the wall. I Before their closure, they had the best brick in the Lou. Now, they're a novelty that Issa a cult classic. Delicious Scottish food. Come here for a pint and leave satisfied. Service is ducking excellent. The ambiance is to die for

Went here for dinner on the last night they were open . A regular haunt for friends of ours, we wanted to show up to support. This visit had us wishing we had stopped in earlier in the year to see it in its glory. There was live music and on brand decor featuring dark wood, classic British isles wooden booth pub seating, paintings of Scottish scenes, Scottish crests, and plenty of Scotch lining the walls. We heard that their specialty cocktails were something to write home about. We certainly hope someone buys the business soon to save this well-loved work of art. While they were out of Fish and Chips by the time we walked in, we passed several plates and they looked so fresh and so good with their side of peas! We ordered what they had left of Wellington Bites and Scotch Eggs and were so glad to have tried both. The Wellington bites especially were juicy and had the perfect combo of salty, savory, and meaty flavors. If Scottish Arms opens again, we will be some of the first in line.

Go to place in St. Louis for some Scottish and traditional UK food items. Friendly service. Nice space featuring classic brickwork and a beautiful wood bar. Ambience is upscale casual. Seating in the patio is pretty nice and more casual. What we ate and drank: - Blood & Sand (4.5/5) loved this drink! Well executed and tasty! - highland gathering (4/5): very tasty appetizers. Scotch egg was my favorite! - fish & chips (4.25/5): nice piece of fresh haddock with a tasty beer batter crust. Fries were seasoned well. Tartar sauce was dialed in quite well. The peas were surprisingly excellent! Enjoyed this meal! - shepherd's pie: (4.25/5): Very tasty and well executed. Portion seemed a bit small, but was plenty for a meal. - banoffee bread pudding (3.75/5): beautiful dish and well executed. Flavors seemed a bit dialed back.

We had a great dinner on Saturday night with friends . The kids had the option of a few entrees served in half portions ( burger with one patty and half order of fish and chips ) and they enjoyed those . The drinks were great and they have a wide selection of beers as well . We enjoyed the pretzel with rarebit sauce as an app . My fish tacos and my partners salmon were both tasty . My friend enjoyed her crab cakes but the French onion soup was less cheesy than she expected . The fish and chips entree was size able and tasty. The orange cake desert was exceptional. Tasted like creamsicle. Jill , our server was friendly and attentive . The ambience was relaxed and the restaurant got busy as the evening progressed . The ambience is cozy and welcoming and I see myself visiting again to try other items on the menu .

Stopped into Scottish Arms bc my husband has been on the search for Scottish Eggs. We went on a Sunday evening. Sundays are a limited menu that offers a happy hour menu only. Don't worry, you will still find flatbread, French onion soups & shepherds pie for more filling things! The bartender was also the waitress that night & she was super nice & attentive. Inside was a bit dark but wasn't impossible to read the menu. Clean area! I'd like to go back to try their full menu.

So much to tell you about The Scottish Arms! Let's start at the beginning! SMALL PLATES: Wee Wellington Bites were the entire reason we went! (A miniature version of Chef Ramsay's signature dish? Right here in the Central West End? Run, don't walk!) And they pair perfectlyyy with the equally decadent Truffle Fries. MAINS: We went all in on the seafood! The Fish Tacos are technically a small plate but there was nothing petite about them. Between the carrot cabbage ginger slaw, cotija cheese, and sriracha mayo, every bite had BIG flavor. As for the Fish n' Chips? Jaws dropped. For one thing, it's MASSIVE! This wild caught, Atlantic haddock filet was battered with Civil Life ale and even the side of peas impressed! DESSERT: We shared the evening's off-menu special: peach cobbler! Not to be outshined by the other courses, it arrived cutely nestled in a little iron skillet, topped with ice cream. VIBE: Think pub comfort meets candlelight.

This place is a hidden gem. I've worked near this place for years and never even heard about it. So when my date suggested we go here for dinner I was intrigued and excited. We made a reservation for 7 pm and we were shocked they weren't that crowded for a Friday night. Our waitress, Cat was awesome and she suggested some great things for us to try off the food and drink menu. My date ordered the New York Angus strip steak with truffle fries. I ordered the gyro with regular fries. All of it was amazing. For drinks, we both settled on peach strawberry sangria. Never can go wrong with a good wine. The other drinks Cat suggested sounded great if having a good drink is your thing. For dessert, we ordered a strawberry cheesecake parfait and it tasted good. The thing I like most about this place is how it looks on the inside. Each table had a lit candle and it gave off a warm feeling. The owner/manager even stopped by to ask how our food tasted and if we needed anything. Excellent customer service. Until next time...

We came here on a friday night around 7pm without a reservation. Sat a table by the entrance, it was so cold everytime someone opens the door. There is other tables inside but were not available. I recommend making a reservation before coming here. So me and my friend decided to sit at the bar. Wasn't too bad. Ordered some cocktails, Back to Thyme one is like lemonade with a hint of thyme, refreshing. Then I ordered their Bordoeux wine, was really good. Food is good too. My friend liked her fish n chips. I like my Kofta Flatbread. But I was just expecting meatballs not a small amount of ground beef as topping. Because Kofta means meatball. I was a little disappointed but it is ok.

The Scottish Arms has the authentic pub feel. It's dark, moody and rugged, great choice on a cold day. The sampler platter was a favorite and fish and chips were delicious. Our server was not super knowledgeable when asked which scotch was best to begin with for a newbie. However they were very friendly. Been back many times and it's constantly good.

Delicious cozy meal during this chilly weather!! Love Scottish arms, been coming here for years. Jill is a great server and everyone that works there you encounter is a kind soul! They changed their menu up a bit since we last came, but our main staples remain. Started with a Scotch egg, French onion soup. Then had fish + chips and beef Wellington bites for main. I didn't get it this round but I also love the burger & the Shepard's pie. You HAVE to make sure and get desert - bread pudding for the win!! Recommend a reservation, we came early (5:15pm) so we're able to snag a table for 2 tho!

Despite that, the other tables seemed to receive constant attention while our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time. We were initially seated in the side room with a large industrial fan blowing so hard that it was moving the menus off the table. We waited for the waitress to return so we could request a different table, but she never came back, so we moved ourselves to another empty table away from the fan. She seemed unhappy about the move and told us we might have to relocate again because they were expecting a busy day. Honestly, the restaurant was empty, and we would have been finished long before any rush started -- which we were. I asked for ketchup with my burger, and it didn't arrive until after I had already finished eating. Overall, the service was very poor. Unfortunately, the food was also extremely salty -- and we're people who normally enjoy salt. I had the Farmhouse Burger with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese, while my wife ordered the steak and fries cooked medium well. The steak came out medium rare, and both her fries and my burger and Brussels sprouts were overly salted. The one bright spot was the mac and cheese, which we took to go. My daughter tried some and said it was the best she'd ever had. To top it off, our bill came to an even $100 with tip, and all we had were waters and the items mentioned above. We had been wanting to try Retreat for quite a while, so this experience was very disappointing. Between the poor service and underwhelming food, we probably won't be coming back.

I ordered their pork chop, which came with asparagus and layered potatoes. The pork chop was served with a chutney sauce made from apricot, black, and golden raisins. I came with my parents and husband and we all agreed it was a great idea and a very comfortable space, perfect for what was needed. I was surprised at how relatively ample the parking was here despite its proximity to the city. We found a spot with no problems. There were discreet signs that directed us up the stairs to where the event was held. It was spacious, airy, and cool, with a decent number of tables and a very nice large bar, as well as restrooms for both men and women. Our family members who spoke were able to stand on a small stage and share their thoughts. The food was served buffet style in front of the stage. Although you'd think it might be hard to hear given the acoustics, they worked out a way to make it so their speeches could be heard easily. Even visiting with other folks after they spoke, it never became too loud to hear each other. There are also nice TVs which displayed photos of the family. Although we used the space for a celebration of life, I can imagine it would be a good fit for all sorts of events, from corporate parties to just a chill hang out space when it's open to the public. It did get a little bit hot in the space as the event wore on, but it wasn't intolerable. The food and drinks were also quite tasty, especially for catered/buffet style food. There were pretzel bites and cheese dip and three different types of slider burgers: a standard/original burger, a taco burger, and an Impossible burger. The pretzel bites were crispy and buttery. I had a taco burger slider. It was a tiny bit dry but had a great flavor. The bartenders were great -- friendly, answering questions, working efficiently, and very kind to all the guests. Husband enjoyed the beers he tried and my mom and I both ordered the "Cranberry Crush," which was a yummy (and strong!) cocktail that was bright and perfectly sweet. We arrived right on time for our reservation, stood for quite a few minutes in a half-empty house before being seated, then waited a very long time between visits from our apparently over-stretched waitstaff. Food was middle of the road. A smoked sirloin sandwich was tasty, though rather well-done. And the order of "salmon cakes", which the menu says is made of "smoked salmon, roast corn, tomato, cucumber, creme fraiche, and capers" was in fact just one cake (not cakes!), smaller than a hockey puck (about 1/2" thick max) and seemed to be made of canned fish, not the bright orange of smoked salmon. It was accompanied by five thin slices of cucumber and three or four halved grape tomatoes. No corn, no capers. It was so boring, and an overpriced disappointment at $23.
