I've ate at Berix Restaurant several times over the years and it serves up delicious Bosnian (Balkan) food in South St. Louis County area for several years now and I love it! I usually like to try different dishes when I'm there and for this past trip I chose the Punjena Paprika that is stuffed peppers although my plate seemed to be stuffed cabbage but any way it comes with mashed potatoes and a creamy sauce that's so delicious! Another favorite Berix dish of mine is the Cevapi that's Balkan grilled small sausages and comes with a delicious Bosnian bread called Somun that you mix with a roasted red pepper (paprika) sauce, raw diced onions and sour cream on piece of the Somun bread you break off from the roll, it's delectable. You can order at the counter for take out or sir down for table service as well. read more

My first foray into Bosnian cuisine proved to be an amazing experience. As the Deep South is devoid of Balkan restaurants, I elected to try two entrees. First, I enjoyed a wonderful plate of Sarma. The filled cabbage rolls were divine. In lieu of rice, mashed potatoes accompanied says rolls. Secondly, I devoured a generous portion of Cevapi. The bread was to die for. The beef sausages were seasoned & cooked to perfection. In terms of service, the staff were outstanding. While the property is a bit aged, the ambiance was nice and everything in working order. My friend and I took a chance on this place after a walk at Jefferson Barracks and am I glad we did! It is located in a strip mall and isn't fancy at all, but if you're looking for authentic Bosnian food or a new experience this is the real deal. We were there on a Saturday afternoon around 3:00 and the place filled up. Who eats at 2 or 3 in the afternoon? Apparently a lot of Bosnian folks. We were possibly the only ones in the place that didn't speak Bosnian or some sort of eastern European language! Talk about authentic! The menu describes the food and has photos of each dish so you kind of know what you are ordering, but if you don't know the traditional flavors you still get a surprise when the dish arrives. My friend had the Pura breakfast which was rich and comforting, the corn was denser than grits but not as crispy as in a Mexican dish and was swimming in a rich cheese sauce. I had the Sarma - cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef and rice covered in a sauce that I cannot begin to describe except to say it was really good. This dish had so many distinct and complementary flavors and I (an admittedly finicky eater) enjoyed each one. As someone previously noted, the table service is a bit slow which left me wondering if we were supposed to order at the counter. Nope, order at your table and be patient. I will definitely go back to experience more of their delicious flavors. read more

I have been here countless times. I like their donor Kebab. a lot. The cevapi is good too however I wish it had the sauce and stuffing like the donor. The meat and cheese pies are both good. Stopped in here today at the last minute. Okay the last 55 minutes. They close at 7pm and we walked in at 6:05. I hate that we did that but we did try to make up for it... more about that later. We stood at the counter with a bunch of other people that were all there to pick up to go orders. When it was finally our turn we said we wanted to order something. Then someone behind the counter told us that they close in 45 minutes. Now we were hungry and we eat fast so we thought 45 minutes would work for us. We ordered and sat waiting for our food and at 6:40 I went to the counter to say that they could make it to go and we would just sit outside and that way we weren't causing any problems. They seemed to appreciate that. See. I told you we tried. But they brought out our food at 6:45 on plates. It was steaming hot and looked amazing. Yes, even though time was crucial you know I had to take pictures. We got the Teletina Ispod Saca and the Sarma. Glad you don't have to hear me pronounce those cuz I screwed it up. Hearing our waitress say it was beautiful. Remember when I said we eat fast? Well we were finished with our food at 7:55. Even though I had a couple pieces of bread to soak up the amazing sauce the Sarma was sitting in. I took the plates and the basket of bread in and put it on the counter and told them we'd be back. And we will. Oh yeah, several of the "regulars" were getting something they were calling doughnuts out of the pastry counter. However what we ended up buying while we were waiting was (I think) called Kozaracke Kape not the Tulumba. Yeah, I looked them up online. We brought them home to eat. IF these were in fact Kozaracke Kape then they are more beautiful than anything I saw online. Actually they were more beautiful than anything I saw online while I was trying to figure out what we were eating. They were so fresh and moist. Back to dinner... the Sarma was fantastic the potatoes were a great addition and the sauce was yogurt based and smooth and had just the right amount of richness. As for the other entrée the potatoes had a fresh flavor not sure where they got the tomato from because it tasted home grown but it's May so who has fresh tomatoes? The veal was the reason for the 4 stars... it was a little fatty but it was so tender we didn't need the knife we were given. The food was good. Cevapi sausages are my favorite, and the Somun bread is pillowy like a cloud (but more tasty! ) Service was strange or perhaps I misunderstood. It seems like counter service but when the lady asked if we were eating in (yes) she handed us menus and told us to sit anywhere. There were booths and tables and the dining area was good sized and pleasant enough. It took awhile for someone to come out and take our order. Then once she brought our food and drinks we never saw her again. Ever. I had to go up to the counter to pay even though a bill was never provided. So it seems like it really is counter service and I wish I had ordered and paid in advance because it was awkward trying to pay afterwards with people in line to order. read more

This was my first time in STL and being Bosnian, I wanted to try some of that bad a$$ Bosnian food, I heard so much about. Berix didn't disappoint, food was amazing, fresh and 100 percent authentic. Service was great, regardless of the mandatory mask due to the current covid situation. We tried Baclava as well as some other pastries and they didn't disappoint either. Baclava is extremely moist, so if that's not your thing, try something else, I liked it this way! Will come back 10/10 read more

If you have a problem with workers that don't use gloves then don't go. Just know they are a mom and pops type place that serve food their way. They wash their hands and yes there are some things that could be improved but, food is good and they take care of you. read more

Small space with amazing Bosnian food. You can either order at the counter or sit down and be served. I went on a Saturday with my sister for lunch, and we decided to have table service. The service was a little slow, since they were running between the counter and the tables, but the waitress was very friendly. We both asked for water, and we were given bottles of water instead of glasses. I would have preferred glasses because I drink a ton of water and I drank my bottle far before I finished my meal, and the waitress never came around again. The waitress also forgot a salad that we ordered, but luckily it didn't end up being a problem since we ordered too much food. The food was amazing. We split a Sirnica (a cheese stuffed pastry), a chicken skewer dish, and a Cevapi (their self proclaimed best dish, consisting of flatbread stuffed with sausages). Neither of us really like sausage, so we both preferred the chicken dish and the Sirnica. The pastry and the bread that came with both of the main dishes was AMAZING!!! Some of the best food I have ever had. I couldn't stop eating it. We didn't realize for a really long time that you have to pay at the counter, so we ended up sitting at out table for a lot longer than we planned. read more

I stayed for a long time watching the two women make other peoples food including carving meat from the vertical rotisserie. All was interesting & I was able to be patient, but still... The menu was literally in another language to me. I did not want to do a web search so I thought I would just order a "pick 2" and ask for the most popular. Then came the spoken language barrier. I ended up just ordering a sandwich with lamb. It was like a large gyro on fresh softer bread for $5.50 & I was happy. $2 for tea... I understood why there were so many "to go" orders. Today I tried this restaurant for dinner. I brought it to my husband's work just to get surprised that most of my requests were not heard. We got chicken kebab(raznici) and I asked for no peppers and salad I asked for no onions, and here we are picking out onions from our salad and peppers off the chicken. Went on Saturday with BBF after visiting the Telephone Museum @ Jefferson Barracks. There was quite a bit of confusion at the entrance. We couldn't figure out if you ordered at the counter or whether you had table service. An experienced diner pointed us to the dining room. They do an incredible carry out business which is always a good indicator. It took a while for our waitress, but the place was hopping.....at least at the front counter. It was late in the afternoon, so the dining room was barren. While we yammered on, the place got busy. Looked like lots of locals and their families come here. And for good reason. Kudos on a great picture menu! It helps when dealing with language fifferences. We both had the Donner Plate. Huge serving of meat. Salad extra tasty. All tzaziki sauce is not created equal. Theirs is excellent. Our only problem was we received rice instead of vegetables. Absolutely a language problem. I give no points off for someone who actually speaks more than one language . I'm sure our order would have been corrected, but we chose the path of acceptance and figured the Rice was part of our journey. No service complaints. I recommend and will return. Next time I'll go with the Donner Salad with extra tzaziki. read more

One of my Bosnian friends suggested coming here for delicious food, and she was right! We regularly visit Berix to order the meat pie, doner kebab, and fries. The doner kebab is large enough for two people -- way larger than any other doner kebab I've seen. I also can never get enough of their meat pie. The fries are on par with some of the best in St. Louis. I usually call in my order and the food is fresh and ready in about 10 minutes. read more

I wanted to love it, I really did. But Berix fell a little flat for me in a few key areas. My mom, brother and I came here for lunch with pita and cevapi specifically on the brain. You order at the counter and then take a table. The restaurant itself is really clean, spacious and has sort of a cozy ski-lodge feel. My mom placed an order for our cevapi, a cheese pita and also two pitas to take home. However, when the order came up all the pita was on the tray instead of being packaged to-go as she had asked. Not a biggie, but they also gave her spinach pita instead of cheese for some of the order. No language barrier, just unmindful customer service. My cevapi themselves were really good, but there's more to cevapi then just the meat. The bread and kajmak also contribute to the total awesomeness. While the bread was perfect (and I mean perfect!), the cevapi were served with ajvar. I asked for some kajmak but received... sour cream! Lack of the ideal (and authentic) cevapi condiment? Somewhat of a letdown. The pita was so good my mom served it at Thanksgiving dinner instead of making her own. So we'll definitely be back for that. Berix also makes burek, sarma, gulas, raznici, kebabs and pljeskavica in addition to more Americanized sandwiches. Trivia: wondering about the name origin? No, it's not Bosnian. I ended up working a double shift instead of an afternoon shift. So, I decided to go ahead and go to Berix for lunch instead of dinner. I walked in and only one other couple were ahead of me. I asked what she would suggest to anyone who had never been there. she handed me a menu and asked me to look at it. i was just like oooooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!! i ordered the cabbage rolls and a diet beverage. The Cabbage rolls themselves were awesomely good. The 2 scoops of mashed potatoes tasted good to me, but one scoop was cold while the other scoop was fine. The sauce was sooooooo goooood. I believe that the sauce had smoked paprika in it. They also gave me 4 pieces of white bread. The bread was fresh and soft and i ate all 4 piece even though i was getting full. I even thought about going back up and try a dessert and coffee, but the line was getting long and i did not want to just be handed a menu again. The restaurant itself is very nice. The outside seating area was also very nice looking. The service I believe would be better if maybe I spoke Bosnian, or they made it a sit down restaurant. I witnessed people walk in from the other door and walk right up and cut the line. The counter girl looked a bit overwhelmed at times. We live not far from here and after saying we should try it for over a year, my husband and I went sans kiddos for a date night on a Saturday night. We arrived about 6 pm and there was no one else in the dining room. We were handed menus and told to sit anywhere we liked. The server came over pretty quickly to take our drink menus. I ordered American coffee and she was very up front that she would need to brew a new pot so it would be a few mins. No problem at all! A few more tables filled up but I noticed multiple servers so anticipated pretty prompt service overalll. I ordered the Mijesano Meso, my husband ordered the stuffed cabbage rolls and we got the spinach pie to share. Starting with the spinach pie- you could tell it was reheated. The pastry was chewy and just had an awkward overall mouth feel. Mijesano Meso- the meat platter was not anything to write home about. The chicken skewers and grilled chicken breast were seasoned the same so why include both on the platter? While they were cooked properly, there wasn't much to write home about. The sausages were ok. I'm not sure what I expected but aside from a meat flavor, there wasn't much else in substance or seasoning that came through. My husband did enjoy his cabbage rolls and especially enjoyed the sauce. The bread swerved with our meal was light, fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It really was perfect. I wonder if the server just expected us to be done and come to the counter after we finished eating because she mostly disappeared. We had been finished for a good 15 mins before I had to stand up and flag her down from my table while she was coming out of the kitchen. This place wasn't that busY, about 3 other tables with at least one more server floating around. My coffee was tasty and my husband ordered Turkish coffee and while he has had it before, the server was kind enough to explain again how to drink it. The baklava was good but not great. It was soggy and lacked some of the traditional back lava flavors we love Overall, Our experience at Berix was Meh and I don't know that we'd be back. read more

Went in one day with pregnant wife and kid to order a pickup. Held the door for a lady with a baby. Let her get in line before us. The lady couldnt get her order thru because they look to be busy but really were not that busy. Was still waiting in line. A foreign lady walks in, a man walks in 1 minute later. We were waiting in line. The lady looks to the foreign people that walked in way after us takes their order gets it ready they pay and out the door. While we are still waiting with another family to still place an order. The blonde hair lady juat looks at us and get back to work. That was the last chance I gave them an walked out.
