They are the best place around for a wonderful, healthy fish dinner. Their salmon is amazing as well as everything else I have had! The nice thing is a complete meal including salad and bread ranges from around $18-25. You can't get the quality or the price anywhere else. The atmosphere is very good. It is a great place to sit down and enjoy a meal in comfort. The servers have always been very helpful making substitutions where needed. I have always felt very cared for by each of the servers. The first and last time we came here was five years ago, and the food and service were terrible. But we decided to give it another try, and we were not disappointed. Apparently, McGrath's has done much to upgrade itself. I loved this place in Eugene, so when I had a couple of nights in Salem, you bet I was gonna get an order of clam chowder to take back to my hotel. Alas, I did get the chowder (and it was as good as I remembered, hence the extra star), BUT... I did not get the extra bread and butter I ordered (and paid for!). Remembering to put crackers in my bag was apparently asking too much of staff during a slow lunchtime. The salads were made with wet lettuce and the sides of dressing were only half full. Since I was back in my room and in my pajamas before the disappointment manifested, and I decided to enjoy what I did have, but here a few hours later, I'm still thinking about my disappointment. I dunno if dining in results in better quality (though it's much easier to get them to fix things if it doesn't), but think long and hard before doing take out. McGrath's is a great restaurant for seafood. My group of three ate there on Thanksgiving Day. I had reservations and we still had to wait 40 minutes for a table. At first the waitress said they were out of the Thanksgiving dinners. She took our seafood and chicken order then came back and said she found out the Thanksgiving Day dinner was only for people who had made reservations. On the afternoon of the 3/15/2025, I ordered the 3 course special with the steelhead salmon, the salad, and the chocolate cake and ice-cream desert. The add showed a steelhead phylae that was at least one inch thick and a baked potato and a mix of broccoli vegetables. What I got was entirely different that was advertised. The salmon was hardly a quarter inch thick, and burned. I gave the waiter the coupon when I ordered. The vegetables were a few asparagus spears. I went ahead and ate it. I should've contacted the manager, but I didn't. which I now regret. After I finished , the waiter gave me the bill that did not reflect the 3.00 off. He tried to make me pay the regular price with out the discount. When I questioned him, he said " thats not with the discount." He was expecting me not to notice so he would charge me the full price. He brought back and updated bill showing the 3.00 off. then he asked me if i wanted desert? I said yeah the one that comes with the meal. He said " oh, yeah I forgot." I was a waiter for five years and why did he serve me the plate that wasn't right in the first place. That's something the server should check that it's the right plate that was ordered, He seamed to me to be a McDonald's reject. He didn't care just like McDonalds crew. We enjoyed a nice dinner here with some friends. We started our meal with my favorite... sourdough bread. It was served warm and soft with whipped butter. Next was a house salad. Fresh and good sized. I ordered my dressing on the side. I had the STUFFED PRAWNS $18.79 (Butterflied Prawns stuffed with a Seafood Mixture and Baked. Topped with Lobster Beurre-Blanc.) I loved it! Came with green beans and baked potato. There used to be a McGraths located at Alderwood mall and we would go there. Ordered the salmon and chips with a side salad. The salad was good, but came with a mess of green peas on it. I like peas, but not on this kind of salad. My salmon & fries were tasty. My wife had shrimp cocktail, and the goblet was mostly full of inedible celery pieces. This presentation needs to be rethought. Maybe avocado or slaw that can be eaten on the bottom layer. Overall it's a good restaurant, menu and prices need tweaking to compete with Red Lobster down the road. read more

Ordered an expensive dinner. Rib Eye. Baked potato came with fake butter and fake sour cream. Tiny morsels of bread came with fake butter. Had to ask for real butter. Cook said "that's all our bakery uses" like that somehow makes it correct. Rib Eye should have been called a "rib 'skin of eye'" as it was so thin that the "media rare" was a like a slice of paper through the middle. I ordered the fish and chips. When the food arrived it was mediocre at best. I ordered the baked potato instead of fries and it was terrible. The butter tasted like it was stale and so did the potato. The fish was soggy and greasy. At the end of dinner we thought we could at least get a blackberry cobbler and salvage a bad dinner.. We ordered it to go and it came out stone cold. I got it home. warmed it up and went to take a bite and there is barely anything inside. what was in there tasted like some cheap jelly you get at the dollar store. No actual fruit at all. I took a table spoon to scoop it out and there was only 3 tablespoons of this stuff inside a big crust. It was so bad. I was very disappointed because this place used to be so nice and the food was so good. It is so sad to see how far it has gone down hill. Our dinner costed us about 80 bucks including tip. I had dinner with some of family members here reside in the Salem, OR, area during my visit to the area for vacation. We deliberated over options and settled on McGrath's. We started with calamari (not pictured). It was delicious and it was some of their first time trying it. I had the Salmon, rice, and veggies. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the rice was delicious, but the carrots were a little undercooked. For dessert, I had the pumpkin cheesecake. For someone like me who doesn't really like pumpkin flavored options, it was absolutely delicious and almost had the flavor a sweet potato. It was so good. No. Just no. We were being lazy and ordered delivery from McGraths. I've never been impressed with them before and after our delivery, I am even more against them. Food was still warm when we got it it. The petite lobster tail was small as expected and wife said they were good. I had the Seafood linguini. It was terrible. Had to hunt to find the seafood and the sauce. Basically it was a pile of noodles. Thumbs down on that. Couldn't even eat it. Then there were the stuffed mushrooms. Squished, slimy and just plain gross. I spent close to $100 on this meal and was so disappointed but like I said earlier, have not been impressed before and they didn't let me down this time. The review will be about my experience but touch on my entire table because they got their order wrong and had to wait--but good service recover. Last time I was here I was really disappointed in the clam chowder. It was thick like potato pudding and so oversalted that I'm sure the cook hadn't tasted it since earlier in the week when it was first made. So, I was curious to see if this time would be better because I really love the look and feel of this place. My chowder was exactly as I expected with good amounts of clam, good consistency and the flavor was just right. I asked for the pan-fried oysters to be lightly cooked since in the past they have been overcooked. The plate was nice looking with fresh green beans and I could not have been more pleased. The oysters were just right as if the cook liked oysters. The service was very tight from the hostess to the server to the manager who had to recover my tablemate's experience. I will certainly come back. Although for an established restaurant like this to not be able to get orders right is unfortunate--service recover or not. read more

Would have liked to give 3.5 stars. This is a nicely appointed sit down restaurant. We stopped here on a Monday evening after a full day of driving. Hostess very friendly and seated us promptly. In honor of the local hazelnut farms, we both had the sole, which we enjoyed. Salad also very good: nice crisp croutons and some unusual items like radishes and green peas. Baked potato good; pilaf serviceable. There were some significant gaps however. First, neither the hostess, waiter nor even the bartender (!) could tell us anything about the craft beers. So we were left to order on name alone. Suggest that a short written description be available as staff cannot advise. Second, the vegetables were pretty awful. I had 'glazed' carrots which were baby cut carrots seemingly steamed with a dash of sugar (no glaze). Hubby had seasonal vegetables, which included unseasoned baby cut carrots, a mix of grey/overcooked snap peas with nicely cooked ones, and one forlorn piece of red pepper. So, I'd say that the kitchen got the hard part right (hazelnut crusted fish with nice light lemon caper sauce) and totally dropped the ball on some easy things. read more

I'll start by saying the waiters were polite, attentive and professional. My last visit was 2/4/2025. I've been visiting Salem a couple times a year for a long time. I usually eat at McGraths during my visit. Over the last few years I've seen a gradual but noticeable decline in quality. In the past I got hooked on the fisherman's stew as it was a hearty manhattan style fish chowder with chunks of fish in a tomato based broth. The clam chowder was also a hit with lots of clams. The fish was cooked correctly which is easy to overcook. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case the last few times I've dined there. On my last several visits the fish stew had no pieces of fish only a scattering of shredded fish. The clam chowder was no better with just a few small pieces of clam and potato in a thick paste like broth. My side salad blue cheese dressing was void of blue cheese flavor and thin. My fish and chips were greasy and the tarter sauce tasted like it came from a bottle. They also have removed cloth napkins in place of paper ones. All cost of doing business has risen. People will pay for consistent quality. Please return to the quality that I first experienced many years ago. If prices need to be raised then so be it. read more

I really enjoy opportunities to share how great a place is whether it is good, service or atmosphere. Unfortunately I this is not the case here. I have had one less than satisfactory visit after another with this restaurant. From having my meal forgotten and receiving it after the rest of the table was done to poor service to dirty table and now this latest. I keep saying I won't go back but after this last visit, I won't select, recommend or be coerced into going back. Salad course, watered down dressing, over abundance of peas and a rotten tomato. Dinner course, tiger crowned halibut. Supposed to be topped with tiger prawns thus the name. Three jumbo shrimp. The typical 3" curled 20-25 per pound w/tail on. Tiger prawns are more 8-12 per pound 6"-7" long. Harvest size is 9"-11"... don't advertise it if it isn't so! Halibut was a good portion but overcooked. Dry, dense and chewy. Sides were as expected. Dessert, ordered two Dutch Apple Cheesecake slices with streusel topping to go. This was listed on the "specials insert in the menu. Just happened to look in the boxes... pumpkin cheesecake that looked like it had been sliced and sitting on a plate in the fridge for a day or so based on the look of the top and sides. Server said they were out of the Dutch Apple. Service was friendly and polite but slow and fairly non existent. The upside...I had a most excellent dinner companion. Overall...not worth the cost and I cannot recommend them. read more

We had reservations for three adults at 2pm on Father's day Sunday. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. Without exception the food was delicious, freshly cooked and top quality. Imaginative flavors. No less than three all time bests. The best onion rings I've ever had. The best coleslaw my mother in law has ever had. And the best cheesecake my mother in law has ever had. The restaurant was very busy, but the staff was handling it well. Great experience all around. Bonus: the bill was much less than we were expecting. Went for my Mom's b-day. We got seated right away as I had made reservations. We didn't see our server until we sat for about 8 minutes. He was nice enough, took our order but he NEVER came back to our table. Before he took our order we asked for 3 separate checks. Someone else delivered our food- that's ok though, she delivers 5 peoples food, problem is, we were a party of 6- she says 'anything else you need' we said yes- his food. She asked what he ordered and went to go get it, it was delivered right away. I ordered fish & chips- 3 piece. My plate presentation was terrible. There was rice pilaf stuck to the side of my plate (I didn't order rice) there was a french fry sinking in my tarter sauce- I know the fish is deep fried but there was wayyyyyyyyyyy too much grease on my plate, the fish was very tasteless. Someone should have made sure all the plates were clean & presentable before bringing them out. Someone else I will call our second server checked back on us a couple of times, she cleared our plates- then our original server walks by & doesn't even acknowledge or look at us. Our second server brings out the check- everything is on one, remember we asked for 3 checks. She seemed irritated when she said she could split it for us. We will never go back there again. The salad had a good variety of veggies and was crisp and fresh. The sourdough had great flavor but was underbaked and doughy. Green beans were cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were good but had zero garlic flavor to them. Really enjoyed the snow crab legs. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 though was the steak. Although it was cooked perfectly (medium rare) after my first bite it was apparent why it came with the giant scoop of herb butter; completely flavorless. My red flags did go up when they brought steak sauce to the table but I didn't expect it to taste that bland. Overall great experience, would definitely go back. Wasn't aware that it was a chain but basically the equivalent of red lobster. They had deals for weekdays though. We came on Wednesday and it was a 3 course meal for $14.95. I got chowder, the seafood combo, and Marionberry pie. Chowder was fine, nothing special. The seafood combo came with fish, shrimp, and mushrooms in crazy rich, buttery sauce. Then the pie came out and we were al expecting one piece of pie but no we each got a whole skillet dish of pie with several scoops of ice cream. Crazy crazy deal, but food was just okay. read more

The first order was great, we both had the fish and chips and we couldn't believe we'd waited so long to try this place. Tonight we ordered again, looking forward to their wonderful fish. Instead, we received undercooked, inedible glop. The breading was mush and the fish inside was only half-cooked. You could clearly see the difference between the cooked fish (white) and the undercooked fish (transparent). We threw it all out and GrubHub refunded our food cost. Inconsistencies in restaurant food should never happen. We will never give them another chance. We don't prefer to gamble when it comes to our food and I'm sure we can find a seafood restaurant that will be great everytime. read more

My wife and I recently moved back to Salem after 30 years in Alaska. It was our daughter in-law's birthday and we wanted to treat her to a special meal. The waitress "Amber" did not pour our water until we asked after 15 to 20 minutes into our arrival. My wife and I had the 3-piece fish and chips and a cup of chowder. Both orders of fish were undercooked and tasted like the bottom of a burnt fryer. The fries with my fish tasted nasty as well and looked like warmed over Mcdonalds fries. I was expecting maybe steak fries. The fish tacos that my daughter in-law had according to her were good. The scallops my son had were clearly burnt "NO EXAGGERATION" and everyone commented on them as they reached our table. Our expectations were very high as we remember eating at Mcgrath's at your downtown location years ago. Clearly your standards have drastically diminished over the years to more like a greasy spoon hole in the wall. We were all thoroughly disgusted and have no plans to return at least until you find a cook who understands seafood. We spent over $130. on this disaster of a meal...utter trash! read more

I've been here twice before with my husband and the service and food were excellent! Our favorite place to go when in Salem! So when I had a business trip to Salem and took my son we stopped there for a late lunch. We were seated at 4:45. It took a very long time for the server to come by but she finally did. Gave our orders for drinks, appetizer, and entrees. Got our drinks and appetizer in a reasonable amount of time. At 5:50 we gave up on the entrees and left. They were NOT that busy. The server had two tables, including ours, in her section. My son had ordered the endless prawns. There was no reason his order couldn't have been coming out while I waited for mine. I went to the front and asked for the bill for the food we had been served. A manager came up and gave us our bill. Although I was visibly angry I was very polite and I did pay for the food we actually received. I did not request it but seems to me the manager could have comp'd the whopping $17 bill for my inconvenience. His excuse was the server was new. To be ignored for nearly an hour is not because you're new. We'll be back because I think this was just a one time problem. I hope. But it really takes away from our previous good experience and if it happens again we won't be back after that. read more
