Capt. Jerry explains our cruising altitude before we push off.

First off, there's no evidence that Marilyn Monroe was photographed in that burlap potato sack from Long Produce in Twin Falls at J.R. Simplot's Payette Lake getaway. Yet, that's what Capt. Jerry said as we cruised by the potato king's vacation home on the west side of the lake during a cruise aboard the 62-foot vessel, The Idaho. The other passengers ate it up. I was skeptical because all of the famous Monroe shots were taken in a studio. Why would the starlet waste the breathtaking vista of Payette Lake to go inside to a studio if she had really come to Idaho in her potato sack? With the beauty of the lake and its surroundings, I'm not sure why Jerry felt the need to embellish a tall tale about Simplot and that dress. If Simplot was involved, then she would have been wearing one of his burlap bags. That said, my wife and I really enjoyed the two-hour trek around the lake. Thankfully, it didn't last three hours, since we all know what happened to the S.S. Minnow. The trip provided a great perspective on the lake and how large it is. It's difficult to get that perspective driving on roads away from the shore. The skies threatened rain all evening on an early summer night, so there were probably only a dozen guests on board. I think that made it more enjoyable for those of us who braved the weather that night. It was interesting to see the mix of old A-frame houses that had entertained owners and their guests for decades and newer structures built closer together. Some of the older places once had fabulous views out on the lake that were now obscured by trees that had grown up over time. Capt. Jerry provided commentary that except for the Marilyn tall tale was informative and interesting. The cost was reasonable and all of the staff members were friendly.

We had a great time on the Idaho for a Sunday sunset cruise! We booked our reservations online and checked in super easily the day of. We sat on the front of the boat at the beginning of the cruise and then eventually moved over to the top and inside. The drinks are reasonable (full bar) and it was fun chatting with the others on the tour! Great experience! I would definitely recommend this!

My wife and I were gifted a sunset cruise for our wedding anniversary. First time doing a cruise like this and we will definitely do another one in the future. Views were great, captain was great with the history of McCall and Payette Lake. We got to meet a great couple who sat with us at our table and had great talks along the whole 2 hour cruise, all while taking in the scenic views! All in all, it's worth it to do a day or sunset cruise of Payette Lake. We decided to use our sunset cruise on August 2, 2024.

My girlfriends & I thoroughly enjoyed the 1.5hr cruise on a Sunday late AM. Online booking was easy (though credit card vs debit recommended, as my card info was stolen... but that's reflection of online risks, not the co). I really appreciated the ability to list the names of people in our party, & was able to get a bit of social distancing from others amongst our grp (as well as there was plenty of gentle airflow up top!) as well as I was able to bring on my own water (due to a medical condition that I notified them of prior to arrival.) A full bar is avail, along w/your basic non alcoholic drinks & basic snacks. The narrator was informative... but honestly I just "literally enjoyed the journey" w/my girlfriends. But for those history buffs- the volume was loud & clear & the facts were varied from frivolous to fascinating... I would do this cruise again!

We had a lovely cocktail cruise around the Payette Lake thanks to McCall Lake Cruises. We ordered cocktails, and for non drinkers, there was also water and other soft drinks available. We sat on the upper deck where we had beautiful views of the lake and lakeside homes. The staff was attentive and made sure we were getting everything we needed. We had a great conversation with Brian, who we all enjoyed very much . And the sunset was beautiful which was close to 9pm as that is when the sun sets at this time of the year. This is a great way to end the day if you find yourself up in McCall, Idaho.

Fun experience and good for all ages. Great to see the lake from a different perspective and to hear about the history. The crew was nice, friendly and professional. Highly recommend the experience.

Awesome views and nice relaxing ride. A little low budget on the music, but overall good bang for your buck. Worth doing if you've never been on Payette Lake.

The road gets pretty windy once you hit Copperfield, but the views of Hells Canyon and Snake River are worth it! There are quite a few pull-outs to stop and take pics. We also passed numerous campground and picnic options. We enjoyed driving over the dam and taking pictures from both sides. Such beautiful views! If you follow the road to the end, passed the dam about 0.5 mile, you come across the visitors center. It was closed when we arrived, but we did enjoy watching the rafters and kayakers from the back deck. Would highly recommend a visit!

To access the dam, you pick up Hells Canyon Road at Copperfield (if coming from the Oregon side) and snake your way up along the Hells Canyon Reservoir for about half an hour. It's a scenic drive that offers plenty of places to pull off and swim, and quite a few trailheads for hikes up into the Idaho side of the canyon. The route takes you along the base of some very steep cliffs and overhangs, and you can tell by the dents in the blacktop that there are often rockfalls along here. My wife was white-knuckling it during most of the ride out. The dam itself is nothing too spectacular, but it does sit in a very scenic spot on the river. Once you cross the dam, the road ends in a boat launch, and this is where the adventure begins. Here you can put in for kayaking, rafting and drift-boat floats down the canyon. Fishing abounds. The dam itself has a little visitor's center with historical photographs and a couple of Idaho Power employees who can answer questions. We were able to get some good info on road quality for our forthcoming drive up the forest service roads into the Wallowas. Super helpful! If you're not floating or fishing or otherwise using the recreation side of the river, there's not a whole lot to do here other than learn about the dam and take in some pretty scenic views from the canyon floor. It's almost more about the views on the drive in. And you'll be seeing them again on the drive out, as there's nowhere to go from here but back the way you came.

We made a reservation for 8pm on a Saturday, and honestly, they weren't packed (they still had plenty of tables open). When we arrived there was no one at the host stand, and when they came they didn't check us in right away. Once we confirmed the reservation it took about 10 minutes for us to be seated, and there was a couple that came after us that had a reservation at the same time and were seated before us (okay, no big deal). We did get a window seat, which was nice. But this is supposed to be an upper scale restaurant in the area, and the silverware we were given was dirty, so not a great start. The server came to take our order, we ordered mocktails and a huckleberry lemon drop as well as the bread basket and the cured meat and cheese plate- compared to the Cutwater, honestly, no comparison. The teens didn't even drink the mocktail (which the server did take off the bill, and that was nice) and the lemon drop was okay. The bread basket and meat plate were fine, but we wouldn't order them again. My son ordered the 12oz ribeye (which was nearly 60.00) and I would say at least 50% of it was fat, and his was overcooked. I ordered the flat iron, and mine was undercooked, so he ended up eating mine. The herb roasted potatoes needed seasoning and felt like something they simply tossed on the plate. My daughter's Caesar salad was as expected to a side salad. Our server never came to check on us after the food was brought out, and we waited for her to return after we were done with the food for nearly 20 minutes. Overall we were disappointed and not truly certain why this place is recommended above other similar places in town. Very expensive, seems like it is trying to be upscale or more "fine-dining" but it missed the mark for us.
