We put it at Vinegar Creek boat ramp, outside of Riggins, and jetted up to China Bar Lodge where we ate lunch. They supplied us with home made sandwiches and delicious home made cookies, and we sat in the lodge and enjoyed the beautiful view of the river. The trip itself was fun. We got to see a lot of Idaho landscape that you will never see from any road, and were lucky enough to see some wildlife along the way. Bald Eagles, deer, mountain goats and sheep. It was awesome. Jeff, our boat pilot and one of the owners of the company, was super nice and he stopped the boat several times to tell us about the history and events that took place along the river. Also important to note was Brenda, who I spoke to several times during the reservation process. We had to change and update our reservation several times, as family availability for the trip changed, and as we had to make adjustments on who would be coming. Through all of this, Brenda was super helpful and took care of everything perfectly. All-in-all, this was a great experience, and would highly recommend Salmon River Tours for your wilderness river vacation experience.

We texted back and forth for about an hour and soon decided to book a trip. Family and new friends from Alabama, Arizona, North Carolina and Idaho decided to make the trip. Well the long and short of it is we had a fabulous time with an amazing outfitter. I can't speak highly enough about SRT and the way they made the trip a total success! After watching the episode we felt like we knew Jess and Brenda but we had no idea how much fun it would be. Jess went way out of his way to see we had the best possible time and made the trip a total success. Rocky was a great tour guide and went way out of his way to take care of anything we needed. The food was was far more and way better than anything we expected. Dinner was prime rib and shrimp and breakfast was just as good, gourmet all the way. The jet boat trip is a can't miss. Jess gave us a fantastic tour and really highlighted the beautiful canyon they call home. I've been boating for most of my life but Jess can maneuver this boat like nothing I've ever seen! It may be their business but we think it was much more than that. The worst thing I can say is that we didn't book a couple more days to really appreciate the canyon. The best thing I can say about it is we're all planning to be repeat offenders to this hidden jewel, some as soon as within 2 months. This time we're going to spend the time fishing with people at SRT who truly know the river and canyon. We did a lot of research. There's a lot of outfitters out there. The weather was also decent. Joseph is no fool. While it was a weekend, the other towns nearby were all but shut down. Not Joseph. Most of the shops were open. Restaurants full of people. Sidewalks bustling with pedestrians. We had other plans, we traveled a couple hours to get here and still had the drive back. We literally had only planned on stopping at the post office in Joseph. I thought it would be funny to mail my Uncle Joseph in California from Joseph, Oregon. Apparently, I'm the only one who thinks I'm funny. My Wife is immune to my hilarious nature. Although Joseph is a little out of the way, we are planning on a summer trip back. There was so much to see in Joseph that we would need to park and walk around to see everything. We love camping in the area, so Joseph is just another reason to come back this way.

The city of Joseph was incorporated in 1887 and named after Nez Perce Chief Joseph who is buried there at Wallowa Lake. The population of Joseph is approximately 1000. The economy was primarily based on agriculture and timber until the 80's when 3 Bronze foundries opened and artists and galleries came to inhabit the town. The streets are lined with beautiful side walks and life size bronze statues. There are many art galleries and shops with unique items. A couple miles out of town is Wallowa Lake which offers camping, shopping, hiking, boating, restaurants, a tram and wildlife viewing in a breath taking setting. In July, Joseph hosts the Chief Joseph Days rodeo, in August the Bronze, Blues and Brews Festival and in September Alpenfest which is a Swiss-Bavarian festival at Wallowa Lake. Hells Canyon is what you make of it. If you imagine it to be a gateway to hell, then that is…read moreexactly what it will be: grueling trails through rugged country, hostile heat and cold, intrusive plants and animals (poison ivy, ticks, rattlesnakes), and endlessly long and steep days followed by eternally long nights. If you approach it differently, with an open mind and an expansive heart, then Hells Canyon will be like the Iceland of the American West: beauty instead of brutality; green fields, verdant wildflowers, snow-topped ridges, and cascading mountain streams. Birds will sing and winds will blow; stars will shine brightly at night and you will stare in perpetual awe at one of America's most pristine wilderness areas. But the greater truth is that BOTH of these places exist - the Hells Canyon of nightmares, and the Hells Canyon of dreams. You simply have to find a way during your visit here to reconcile these opposing visions into an integrated whole. If you can do that - the beauty and and the beast coexisting happily together - then you will emerge from Hells Canyon a transformed person with a deeper sense of self and an enhanced appreciation for the diversity of the wider world in an appropriately sized package (750,000 acres, for starters). And if you can survive the ordeal, you will exit the canyon happier, heartier, and healthier than when you left - like Orpheus in the Underworld, except that in this particular case, you won't feel the need to look back. That, in essence, is what Hells Canyon means to me. And to you, if you are ready for the experience. May is the best of all possible months for visiting the canyon by foot or mule: you'll likely enter using Freezeout Trailhead (30 miles on asphalt and gravel roads from Joseph, OR), or Dug Bar, a long high-clearance road to the North (downstream). Bear in mind that the Idaho side of the canyon - the Seven Devils Wilderness - is still deep in melting snow, and is not accessible until the summer, so you'll need to enter from the Oregon side if you want to see the wildflowers and the impossibly green meadows that carpet the canyon in springtime. Plan for 3-5 days, choose the High Trail (#1751) as your main route, and don't descend to the Snake River unless you are prepared for thorns, poison ivy, and brush. Sluice Creek and Saddle Creek make good access points if you choose this path (Temperance Creek does not). If you are a first-time visitor, I'd recommend staying on the High Trail the whole time. Head up, down, and then North until you are tired, find a campsite, then return back over Freezeout Saddle when you have had your fill of what the canyon has to offer. The climb over Freezeout Saddle is epic: steep, switchbacked, with expansive views of the Seven Devils and of the distant Eagle Cap wilderness to the West. On a clear day, with lupines, Indian paintbrush, and arrowleaf balsamroot blooming, this is the most beautiful place you ever will see - as untouched and unvarnished a natural landscape as you are likely to find in the continental U.S. This is hard country. You need to be prepared. That "hell" part isn't a joke. But it's also America's grandest and most incredible canyon, end of story. If you are able to come, and it takes time, effort, and luck, then just do it! You'll emerge a different person than when you started, and that's something to treasure for years and decades to come.

Brad and I spent the day with Roy, a historian, a patient teacher and a funny as hell human being. Such an accomplished guide, drift boats man, with a love for the lakes and the rivers, that he both loves, and thrives in. He truly wants his guests to succeed in catching fish and makes every effort to do so. I was not having much luck on the last day and the last part of our journey together. He told me that he was going to get me a fish. He gave me a standard rod and reel, and then it happened, finally, I got a great fish. Hallelujah!! He was truly pulling for me to finally get one and "we" did ! Thank you Roy for your expertise, your fun loving and patient demeanor. How does one measure a tiny library in a quaint, touristy, small town with a population of just…read moreover 1,000 people? You can't compare the City of Joseph's library to the great Seattle Public Library downtown or even to the Boise Public Library (you know, the one with an exclamation point after "library"?). But here's what I can tell you: when you first walk in there's an Irish Setter who will greet you and follow you around, or sit next to you pandering for some petting. There's a friendly librarian who is more than happy to help you find what you're looking for (in my case it was inspirational quotes). There are dedicated volunteers, a free wifi connection, a separate room for kids. And there are infrequent visits from people in the area dropping off books and checking out more. This is a great place to visit for a quiet afternoon of reading (I saw at least two chairs with ottomans in the main area) or a great place to set up shop for a couple hours and read the daily newspaper or work on school deadlines. Highly recommend!
