We got the original for 17.50. The roast beef that made them "famous" has the same consistency as chewing on a dry towel. It's salty but not much flavor other than that. I don't really have much more to say on this except do not get their roast beef if you'd ever eaten beef that's quality is better than McDonald's. If you're just getting drinks, it can be fun, but there's way better bars just steps away. 6.50 for a hamms? In northeast Minneapolis? Go to knightcap across the street. After living off of smoothies for two weeks (wisdom tooth), I was craving some hearty greasy bar food! We stopped in here on a Sunday during art-a-whirl. It's seat yourself and has A LOT of space, so finding a seat wasn't a problem. We've lived in the area for quite a while and there is a high probability I've already been here, but probably not to eat LOL *cheers*. I ordered a beer, cheese curds, and their original roast beef. Cheese curds: cheesy with crispy onions beneath. Beer: carbonated. The roast BEAST: 10/10 salty soft and delicious! Portion sizes: BIG! Will definitely be returning when I get that bar food craving. Mayslack's is literally a neighborhood institution and can be proud of being called a Dive Bar. You would expect to see a row of Harley-Davidson's outside, but it's not a biker bar. Just an old-timey NordEast kind of place. I started coming here back in the early 80's when it was owned by Stan Mayslack and there were lines of people waiting for the Sunday-only (as I remember) roast beef sandwich. He pinched the thumbs of every women in line with his serving tongs (I can't explain why) and the garlic in the sauce satisfied the most fervent garlic-lover. It was a fantastic sandwich and worth the wait in line. Fast forward to circa 2000 and Stan has sold his place to a new owner. The only décor change is that the new owner doesn't leave the Christmas lights up all year, but other than that, it's true to its origins. I still make it to Mayslack's several times a year. The lines are gone and the menu has changed. I STILL really like the HUGE roast beef sandwiches, but I miss the original sandwiches, from the Stan days. I know that the recipe was part of the deal when the new owner bought the place, but unfortunately the quality of the roast beef is not nearly as good. It's not at all bad, but it's tougher and somehow more dried out than back in the Stan days. The garlic is there, but is much smaller quantities. It's one of those cases, where shortcuts have been made, a little here, and a little there, and eventually it's just not the same. Fortunately, it's still worth the visit. By the way, the onion rings are the best I have ever had. The batter is like tempura and it is beyond crisp. If you are going to order a side, this is a true winner. I'm still giving it four stars because the roast beef is still tasty and the quantity ensure you will have at least one more meal out of the leftovers. I do love the juice on the buns (don't even think about trying to pick it up), the onions, and the beefiness of the meat. I do like the dive-bar authenticity. Visited Mayslack's Saturday, 5/18/24 after attending Art-a-Whirl with my bestie. The photos on Yelp of the onion rings is what caught our eyes. Walked in, found a table, and sat down. So, its seat yourself. It's your neighborhood dive bar which honestly, I'd think staff would be super friendly-- not the case in our experience. It was dinner-ish time, but it was about 10-15 minutes before we were acknowledged. Our waitress asked us what we wanted to drink, we both asked for waters. She literally pointed to a large picnic style jug of water and said there you go, and walked away. I appreciate the water being available at our fingertips, but the way it was delivered to us was just rude. Waited another few minutes, she brought us menus and walked away. About another 15 minutes later, she came back and asked us if we wanted to order? Put in an order of onion rings with spicy ranch. Onion rings were good. I don't know that I'd come back here, definitely wouldn't go out of my way to visit. The service just wasn't good and the onion rings weren't the best I've had. We felt like an inconvenience to our waitress Megan. Poor service just leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth about the place. I got The Original Roast Beef sandwich, which was a PILE of thin-sliced delicious beef, which was flavorful and seasoned just right; the quality beef spoke for itself. Came with au jus. Generous serving of cole slaw was cold, creamy, delicious and fresh. Husband got the Clubhouse, also delicious. Love the waffle fries! Great service. I visited this place with a friend for the first time at noon on a Friday. It wasn't busy, and Mayslack's totally has an old-school tavern feel. My buddy and I both had "The Original," which contains Roast Beef, Onions, Peppers, and a side of Horseradish, Mustard, Cole Slaw, Au Jus. After eating that absolute mountain of beef, a roast of medium-rare perfection, ya better believe our appetites were TOAST But before satiation, we also shared Mayslack's Fries with Bacon, Cheese, and Sour Cream. I've never had food like this. Ridiculously insanely amazing. The sandwich is made for meat lovers. Beef as good as it gets, and there's enough so you won't ever forget the flavor. But the fries... they tasted like cheese curds, I kid you not, even without the loaded toppings! Something about the crispy exterior and the soft interior made them different from any fry I've tried. Second time ive been here, and each time they have been so wonderful. i had questions regarding being gluten free, since they don't have any allergies on the menu. The owner is usually there and he was just great, he went and got the seasonings in the back and showed me the label himself, lowkey made me tear up because it didn't seem it bothered him. he was willing to go out his way, to my experience good and comfortable. 100% recommend. read more

I journeyed the half mile from my house to this place to start a little Friday afternoon pub crawl up 4th St. It was a great jumping off point. The place is bigger, brighter, and prettier than I would expect a dive bar to be. It's a light dive and is not very sad to be in. The booths are really tight and intimate. Probably the best booth experience I've had in a long, long time. The Grain Belt Premium was cold and crisp and relatively cheap. PERFECT! I also had a roast beef "sandwich" -- I think the "original" or something like that. It comes with coleslaw only, no subbing!!!! I knew this going in. Let's talk about that first. It is probably Sysco brand. I like it. Call me crazy. Now for the beef (Le Beuf) sandwich. It was more of a pile of meat than a sandwich, which again, I'm into. I'm used to like razor thin, STILL PINK, cold roast beef. This is thicker, more cooked (i.e. drier, darker), and slightly tougher than what I'm used to, but it was still tasty AF. Lil cup of Au Jus to drizzle on top, yesssssssssssss. The bread was a rye???? I think rye, and it soaked up the Jus like a sponge. So good. A couple of people from my group ordered a reuben. Gargantuan roast beef sandwich at a very reasonable price. Beef was somewhat dry, tough. Delicious cold slaw. Au jus spot on. Best fountain Coke anywhere -- more base syrup and less carbonated water than most. Pull tabs to keep your hopes alive on a winter afternoon. Not the quality of Stan's old time sandwich but Stan passed long ago and it's time to get over it (I was a customer 43 years ago -- I know, it hurts!). Couldn't finish the huge sandwich so took remainder home with the left over au jus and made myself a pretend birria taco the next day. Still debating whether to go back. You can't go home again. Starting at Mayslack's, Aly got us off to a good start. Try the Bloody Mary, and make sure that you're hungry if you order the huevos Rancheros. Thirty-five years ago I lived in Minneapolis while working my first job after college, and my visit to Mayslack's made me nostalgic for the Minneapolis I remember from that period. 'Old school' and quirky in that particular way that 'dive bars' should be, Mayslack's is a throwback but with decent drinks, an excellent beer selection, and sandwiches piled so high with roast beef you'll think you're in a NYC deli...minus the sky-high prices. And as an added bonus, I found out that my wife's parents used to come down to Mayslack's as far back as the 1960s for polka nights! How cool is that? 5 stars for the beer; 5 stars for the nostalgia; and 5 stars for being able to enjoy the roast beef sandwich and then turn the remainder into a great stir-fry the next night. read more

My husband loves this place. The roast beef is melt in your mouth amazing. We can't live without going here it is so beloved to us. The onion rings are fresh and made to order. Having been a fan of the original Mayslack's, and having been there only once shortly after his death when it changed hands (and being disappointed) I and a friend decided to check it out again and was disappointed at once again being disappointed. You do get a LOT of food for your money but what you get is mediocre. Gone are the days when Mayslack would pull the marinating beef out of a tray of a jus. The beef came dry with a small (and inadequate) cup of a jus on the side and the overpowering taste of garlic of yore just wasn't there, though on the plus side when I mentioned it to the waitress more was delivered. Then came the bill which was automatically printed with an additional charge for use of a credit card. I get it, restaurants pay a fee to the credit card company and some pass that on to the customer, and I'm cool with that, but I was paying cash. When I brought it to the waitresses attention she came back with a new bill with the same charge included. When I brought it to her attention again she said they had adjusted it. Rather than waste more time I found it more expedient to merely reduce her tip by the difference and then some. I don't know if this was the result of a mathematically challenged waitress or a subtle scam by the place (hope it was the former) but patrons should be on the alert for this. Sadly, the Mayslack's of yore is no more; that cow left the pasture along with Mayslack. You want a lot of food for your money go to Mayslack's; you want a really tasty roast beef sandwich, try Famous Dave's or the open faced roast beef sandwich at Maverick's in Roseville. read more

There was a guy who dropped a big wad of cash on the floor one night while I was there. Being a good Samaritan, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if it was his. I knew it was his because I saw him drop it. He was super appreciative and kept offering to ply me with drinks. Good old Mayslack's. Used to frequent this place quite a bit back in the day. It's old and worn, but still fun and was so much fun when Johnny P was bar tending and saving me from the persistent guy above. The good old days.... Great mix of people, inexpensive drinks and just a fun atmosphere. The staff really takes care of their customers and their regulars. DISCLAIMER: You have to like dive bars with cheap beers in order to like this place. If you want fancy drinks with a fancy ambiance, go somewhere else. I've seen a lot of people complain about the service but I have never had an issue. Ive also seen people complain about the roast beef, but I've had both the Classic and the Philly Cheesesteak and I thought both were delicious. I've eaten the wings here multiple times and they hit the spot every time (buffalo bourbon for the win). Probably my favorite part of Mayslack's is the take and bake pizza as there is nothing better than taking home a Mayslack's Original Pizza at 1:30am.
