This place is okay, judging it using a greasy spoon criterion. I passed by it almost daily for years without going in. I think they got a new sign recently, and i think that's what made me want to try it out. Food is good, fresh ingredients, tasty. I had the veggie skillet. Horrible service!!! We ordered breakfast at 10am, said it would be delivered between 10:40-10:50, never showed up. Called the restaurant at 11:04. The server said that the order left 5 minutes prior, it should be there within 5 minutes. Fine. 11:23 comes, still no delivery. I called back, the server again said, oh sorry, hold on, let me contact the driver, and then hangs up on me. I waited 5 minutes, she never calls back to give an update, so I call the restaurant back again, for a 3rd time. Same server answers, I tell her who I am, that I've called before, has no idea what I'm talking about. I said, you were going to contact the driver right? She said, oh yeah. He should be there in a few minutes. At 11:35 the food is finally delivered, almost 55 minutes after the initial delivery time was said. Food was cold, condensation was dripping all over the food, will definitely NOT be ordering from here again! read more

Went here for brunch on a Sunday as it was close by. Had the Denver Skillet and the fiancée had the pancakes. Both were pretty good and service was very attentive. Will go back to try the non-breakfast menu items. read more

I want to like them more, but I agree with reviewer Frank H.: the server was nice yet it must be the same cook. Our food took a really long time to come out even though we were the only ones there. We finally had to ask where it was. The waitress said the cook was on the phone for too long. They should get rid of him! The soup was very good; everything else was average. Prices OK. One of those old-fashioned diners and is about 30 years behind the times. Again, I'd rate it higher if weren't for the slow service. read more

Went in for breakfast on Sunday with my family and the restaurant was very slow (only 3 other people in the place). After 40 min we still did not have our food while numerous other people that came in after us had been served. Over easy eggs and hash browns, how hard could that be? The server was very nice but mentioned that the cook had an attitude. My family and I will never return to this business. read more

Fantastic. Excellent food at affordable prices. Their service is just as good as the food. You have to eat here. Get the steak. Their menu has a good mix of foods that include Mexican, Ecuadorian, and American. There is even a couple of Italian choices. It's a good place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I hadn't visited this diner since it got new owners and was fixed up - but it is now better than before! Met a friend for breakfast and was blown away by the quality of the food (try the hash browns - perfect!) and the great prices - about $6.00 total for a large and tasty breakfast! It has now become my neighborhood place for breakfast and lunch. Chatty staff and steaming cups of joe (also good) make the place as comfortable as your own kitchen. read more

The 1 review that is saying this place is nothing special,has no idea what Special is about.Mayfair Restaurant gives you the Charm of the old show Cheers...a place you wanna go where everybody knows your name...Kim the waitress and owners wife not only makes it a point to greet you with the biggest smile ever but she is also really good at getting your order in and accuarate on time.I have had the hot chocolate and the egg omelette and Ive had the gyro and all were pretty darn good.The sauce used on the Gyro was abundant and tastey. Simply put, this is a below average place. Small dated greasy spoon. Tiny kitchen. One bathroom through the kitchen. We came for breakfast. The place was empty an hour after opening. Probably should have taken the sign. Pancakes below average. Scrambled eggs fine. Chilaquiles were good. No cheese, which I am used to being in there. Chorizo skillet was okay. Definitely greasy but okay flavor. In a town with amazing breakfast places all around, it's surprising to see this place with 4 stars. The staff was nice, but not nice enough to make this place more than a 2.5 on the Chicago scale. Not worth the trip in my opinion. I would have rather been at a golden nugget honestly. read more

If you want to have food from this restaurant, go to the restaurant. DO NOT ORDER ON GRUB HUB! I write this as it has been 2 hours since I ordered and still no food. I called and they said it was on the way - that was 40 minutes ago. I've tried calling again to cancel the order but they took the phone off the hook and are no longer answering. If they were too busy to deal with the volume, they should have pulled off Grub Hub temporarily. Restaurants do this when they know they can't deliver the food in a timely manner during high rush times. I NEVER would have ordered had I known this would happen. I would have picked a different place that could deal with the volume of orders. Because of this experience, I will no longer order or eat at this restaurant. I just hope I can get my money back. read more

Hmmm... Where to start...We sat down and it took 10 min for anyone to even acknowledge us.... No water... Not even a hi. And there was only one other table ! Our food took forever and it came slowly piece... By piece... By piece...we all received toast w our breakfast and she asked as she was taking our order if we wanted butter ... We all said yes. We all got our toast dry and cold. When she FINALLY came back we told her that all the toast was dry..." Oh it was I'm sorry" and took all of our toast plates away then returned w them... Still dry and now colder...( same toast) and then gave us a bowl of butter! Lol yeah it was fun spreading that on our cold toast. Potatoes ( hash browns??) were supposed to have green peppers and onions but 2 of us asked for plain potatoes w/o green pep and onion.......yeah so we all got the same plain ones... They were soft like they were from a can....One of us asked for over Med eggs and she brought over easy. One of us never got our bacon and one of us was missing white toast. When we told her she said " yeah!" Like she knew it.... But didn't apologize or anything. They didn't have any coffee made when we came in on a Sunday morning .... Took forever to make it and we had to repeatedly ask for more.... Same w water and ketchup and jam. A busboy/kid was bringing water to tables 2 at a time... Without a tray... Such a waste of time. Took her forever to write up our bill... And when she asked us how everything was we just kind of laughed and she laughed and walked away. Not concerned at all as to why. Would never ever recommend this place In a million years . Honestly it seemed like they opened for the first time this morning and nobody knew what they were doing. read more

Well, my family and I ate there this morning. The cook made the best veggie omelet I've had in years. Full of flavor. Nice and fluffy with extra spinach. The veggies were very very fresh. The hash browns were made the old fashion way. They were delicious. The waitress was a sweet heart. It's good to have friendly people that serve you. read more

After living in this neighborhood for 30 years and never trying Mayfair Restaurant my daughter and I were looking for somewhere different to have breakfast and after reading the reviews we decided to try the Mayfair and boy are we glad we did! It always seems that no matter where you go for breakfast you lack that "yum" factor. Eggs are eggs, toast is toast and hash browns are usually just tossed on the plate as a filler. The food at Mayfair was delicious! It was a simple egg, bacon and cheese sandwich but somehow it tasted better than any other "breakfast" sandwich I have had. The hashbrowns are obviously home made and just delicious. The fact that they use BUTTER really gives breakfast food the flavor it so sorely lacks in every other breakfast place we have tried. The service was excellent, and the fact that it took awhile to get our food just proved to us that it was all house made. We can't wait to try them for lunch! Will be back very soon! read more

my fiance and i love this place. it is our go to and our neighborhood staple! the prices are great, the food is even better. their homemade chicken and rice soup is so creamy and delicious! it is by far my favorite thing there. i've never had any like it and i crave it all the time! they have off menu biscuits and gravy during breakfast and they're one of my favorites, they come with 2 eggs and hashbrowns. standard diner biscuits and gravy, but satisfying. their hashbrowns are like thinly sliced potatoes layered into a hashbrown stack and fried, they are more soft and potatoe-y than crunchy/crispy. their fries are good, average thickness, crunchy but a soft center. their burgers are good too. dont expect a fancy burger, standard fair, but it's done well. they have a cheeseburger lunch special that comes with soup and side that's a great deal. their pancakes are so good! they're soft, fluffy, and perfect! i love their enchilladas too. they're a bit spicy, super flavorful and a huge portion that comes with rice, beans, sliced avocado and soup. this place is very well priced, cheaper than most places in the neighborhood with great, consistent food in both delivery and dining in. i prefer to eat there. their little tables have unique little patterns and i love them. the wait staff has always been friendly and attentive albeit i dont typically go during super busy times. it is a small diner with cute art on the walls, and the windows are full of large plants and vines. it's really neat and they have a pothos plant that has grown so long it is tacked across part of the wall and windows. were moving from the city soon and this restaurant (esp that chicken and rice soup!) will what i'll miss most about chicago. read more
