From the outside, Mayfair Restaurant may not look like the most inviting place to go to, but as soon as you sit down you're greeted with the most sincere and heart-felt smile. The decor isn't all that great, but the friendliness, the prices, and the food all outshine that! My husband and I went here on a Saturday around 11am. It wasn't busy, perhaps 4 other tables. The menu is fairly simple and it makes it for people like me who are indecisive have an easier time picking something! We ordered 2 coffees (unlimited refills), the salchipapa (fries & sausage), maduro frito (fried sweet plantains), the chilaquiles, and an omelet. Everything was so tasty and their salsa verde is the best I've ever had. We had enough food leftover to fill out an entire to go box for breakfast the next day! Majorly disappointed. I've let it slide in the past when the food arrives cold, because I understand there are other deliveries besides mine and I have a microwave. I've even let it slide when the eggs are cooked incorrectly, requested items are not included, etc. Let me continue by saying sour cream is what makes the chorizo skillet tasty for me. I take extra steps to make sure it's included because it has been left out so many times in the past. Not only did I put it in several places on the order, along with the fact they could charge me for it, but I received a text stating that they were adding it and I'd be charged and this was confirmed with an email as well. However, once again the sour cream was missing when the food arrived. I refused to just accept it this time, so I called the restaurant and was told it would be right out...an hour later, still no delivery of sour cream. Ridiculous! They are less than 3 miles from my home. I call again and they say it'll be here soon as the driver took it with other orders, but if I don't get it, call back and they'll refund the extra charge....seriously?! It has now been an additional 30 minutes since that phone call with no sour cream. This company is all about making money and not about customer satisfaction or even pride in the quality of their product. As much as I love this skillet WHEN IT'S RIGHT, the service sucks and it is rarely right. I am really disappointed and will not be ordering from them in the future. You can only give them so many chances before you have to cut your losses and realize the mediocre food quality that you've been getting along with the crappy service is now the norm, not the exception. Ordered from GrubHub, arrived late. Grecian chicken was way too salty and the sauce leaked all over the container, making a soggy mess. Veggies were mostly soggy green peppers, ugh! Requested potato salad instead of mashed potatoes, request ignored. I go here for breakfast because me too restaurant is better than other restaurants and making breakfast. They also give you more food. the eggs are always cooked perfectly the potatoes are awesome with peppers and onions and everything prepared well. The coffee is really good and the service is excellent. Other Chicago breakfast spots have fallen of; their food is greasy and their coffee horrible. But, as another reviewer stated, the cooks and this one waitress don't wear masks. I can live with the cooks but this waitress walks in, the same one as in the other post, takes her coat off it proceeds to walk around the restaurant greeting people without a mask on! Weird she was. In an era of chain food diners, I'm glad little neighborhood joints like this have a niche in this world. A group of us stopped in on the recommendation of a friend that lives in the area. First of all expect casual and expressive banter between the staff and regular customers. This simply adds to the ambience as the air fills with talk about grandkids, medical problems, and general neighborhood gossip. This will kill time before the food arrives. It may also delay your food if the cook decides to chime in as well. As for the food, the pancakes are buttery awesome. The steak, not so much, but we all warned the person that ordered it to lower their expectations. If we weren't so so engrossed in the food we might have joined in the neighborhood banter, but it was just as entertaining listening. New to the Mayfair neighborhood and we love our Sunday brunches. So, we were happy to see there was a diner within walking distance from our new place. But, after I checked the reviews I was a bit skeptical to even try it. Glad we did! IMO, diners have the best breakfasts and this place did not let me down. Sure it's not the fanciest place and the staff is, what I like to call down to earth. :) No snooty attitudes, just a friendly, "Hey there! What can I getcha?" They have plenty of regulars, they know most people by name, and they talk to everyone about their day or about what happened last week. Ha! I think that's awesome. Went in on a Friday afternoon for coffee and food. My boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich and fries which he devoured (must have been good)! I ordered the steak and eggs, portion is huge and enough for two people. They lost a star because it was slightly overlooked. Flavor was good though. 1st review: 5 stars: Ordered a gyro, and it was quite good! It wasn't overcooked or overly greasy. The sauce was a little more garlicky than I am used to...but not bad!! He seemed to be upset. Both servers were nonetheless kind to him and showed him no attitude. The service was pretty fast too. Would definitely come back & recommend. The chorizo one was soooooo spicy for me!!! no where did it say it was spicy!!!! I am usually careful about that. So my order was about $5-6. Even though I was getting take out, there was a space for a tip at the bottom. I felt super uncomfortable not giving a tip because growing up, I was taught to tip. I gave a $2 tip, which felt sooooo small. but how could I give more for a $5-6 order????? also, here comes the part about the low rating... the waitress was super nice and kept telling me stories about how it's great that the restaurant was finally getting more customers blah blah blah. All this was fine because I liked the interaction while I was waiting. However, then she got to the part that made me feel super pressured to tip. She told me how they get paid a really small amount (I won't discuss the details because I don't believe you need to know anymore for the sake of this yelp review). She also told me how some people gave them quarters for tips. Some lady would come in pretty often and give them "only a penny." Then the waitress was like (this is paraphrased) "well if I get a penny every day, that would be 5 pennies for the week, and that's better than nothing." I literally believed non of this LOL. I thought that she was continously making up stories, so I would freaking tip more. At least that's how it felt to my poor college student thought process lolol. another weird thing is that the place is super dark. turn the damn lights on especially if you have customers there! read more
