We picked to go to El Quetzal restaurant yesterday because of their artistic sign board and inviting exteriors. Our overall experience matched our expectations. We were made to feel comfortable right away with tortilla chips and salsa. Horchata has a mild and distinct peanut flavor which was a plus and the virgin Micheladas were fun. Appetizers, Garnachas chicken were delicious and the Shrimp Aguachiles surprised us with jumbo shrimps laced with red onions in green lime tart sauce. Main entree Chiles Rellenos is served with rice, bean sauce, veg salad and soft hand made tortillas. Hilachas, beef with potatoes is the non spicy option and Revolcado is a dish for more adventures at heart. Tacos are stuffed like never seen before! It was a very satisfying and fulfilling dinner. I will encourage everyone to go ahead and give them a try.

It's a cute little place that you will easily pass up. The decor is colorful and the staff is extremely friendly. Defiantly lost of regulars. The food tastes like a home cooked meal at someone's home. The pupusas with frijoles and queso is so good! I also tried the hilachas. Meat was very tender. I saw several people ordered caldos/soups which I plan to try when the weather is chilly.

My wife and I live in Long Island New York. I've been here my entire life. My parents are from Peru and my wife is from Guatemala. As a Perúvian I can say I have many restaurants to choose from. But unfortunately my wife does not. Back in New York their Isn't any Guatemalan restaurants that I could recommend. We're visiting Chicago for the first time and happen to stumble upon this restaurant by chance. Guatemalan food has a lot to offer. Unfortunately there aren't many places to represent the food/cuisine well. For me a restaurant needs to be kept clean, the servers need to be polite & efficient. And of course the food needs to be well prepared. This place met most of the requisites and more. The young lady attending us was polite and attentive. The place is kept clean and it had good music (typical Guatemalan Marimba music) giving it a good ambience. The food was pleasantly tasty and plenty of it. As an appetizer we had a Pork Tamal each. For a main course my wife had Chiles Rellenos. I had a Steak with Onions which came with a tasty Guatemalan red sauce. Both dishes came with Rice and Refried Beans as well as an order of complimentary "Home made" tortillas. The tortillas were not the typical Mexican type tortillas that you find in many restaurants, meaning the thin bland tasty ones. They are substantially thicker, slightly smaller and have a robust taste to them. I accompanied my dinner with a typical Guatemalan fruit drink, tamarind juice. My wife had a well prepared glass of Horchata. Both drinks were not overly sweetened. For dessert we shared Rellenitos which is a dessert typically not found in restaurants. It consists of beans in paste form and a plantain based dough, deep fried and Lightly drizzled with sugar. At the end of our dinner we asked to speak to the cook. Two are pleasant surprise, a young lady emerged. She was the owner and the cook. We complemented her cooking and her restaurant. She was very appreciative and well mannered. Definitely won't be the last time we come here. I highly recommend this restaurant.

This place was really good different style but delicious very small family owned street parking as for recommendations so you order the correct items BYOB but only for beer drinks they have cocktails

Their food is amazing! Everything was so fresh and delicious. Homemade tortillas! Only 1 server the night we went but the food was definitely worth the wait. It's also BYOB. Will definitely be back.

La comida tiene sabor, el "atol" de maiz fue mas un atol de maicena que de maiz, y el servicio fue malo la mesera fue muy grosera.

Beware..... of yourself…read more Palm Sunday one of the busiest Sundays of the year. Most cafes get hit with the after church crowd. I sat by the back wall and witnessed what hostesses, waitresses, waiters, cashiers, chefs, cooks.... go through. A table became so selfishly rude and impatient. A restaurant full of people. *** if a restaurant is full and has a line outside... as a foodie.... that's a GREAT SIGN*** It reminded me of the times, I was rude, full of myself, immature, selfish, impatient, obnoxious, ridiculous, wrong!!!! I wanted to defend the staff so badly, I wanted to step up and say something. But instead I observed how poor of a customer we are and have become. All in all, the 2 waitresses, were humble, quiet, patience, pleading with the crowd, smiling, trying, cleaning, answering calls, welcoming each costumer/s, taking orders, preparing online orders, attending to each table promptly. Our food was timely, delicious, affordable, amazing. More importantly the staff on point is AMAZING!! I hope you each search your heart, think!!! One day your loved one, child, grandchild, yourself... may be in a similar situation. Treat and appreciate your waiter/s, delivery person, cashier..... and bless them. Thank you for an amazing meal each and every time. I hope the owner, appreciates and compensates the waitresses. You don't need to go bankrupt.

Intimate setting with just 7 seats at the chef's counter and 12 in the dining area. 9/13 dishes were great. There's no "smoke and mirrors" at the chef's counter. For an additional $20, we received two extra courses and an intimate look at a high-functioning, high-pressure kitchen. Chef Norman Fenton's exacting expectations are on full display. It's a masterclass in attention to detail, though the transparency comes with a side of tension. I loved the honesty of the experience, but if your goal is a serene conversation over dinner, the main dining room is the play. 5/5 Would be sad to never have again (1) * Chamoyada: Palate cleansers are always refreshing, but this was next level. Fruity and fresh heaven. 4.5/5 Great (8) * Chips and Salsa: Impressive to finish like a true salsa and chip. My wife loved * Chicharron: Rich corn and cheese dip. * Aguachile: Stunning visually. Lovely chile broth. * Quesadilla: Truffle uses well to round the dish. Super rich with black garlic. * Lamb: Super rich glaze. Great accompaniments from the beets and sauces. * Pineapple dessert * Horchata chai: Banana pieces were incredible. Good sweetness level. * Finishing bites: Nice 33% and 66% chocolate. Fun little bites. 3/5: OK (3) * Ravioli: Ravioli inside was rich, but overly so. Nice corn sauce but there was a corn component on the outside of the dish that had an unpleasant chewy flavor. * Tacos Dorados/Bluefin Tuna/Toasta: Love the idea of taco flight, and a great mix of textures. But none of the taco flavors hit for me. * Black Cod: Great components, but a sum that added up to less not more. Ultracrispy kale, but it tasted far better on its on. Nice green sauce and cod. Chayote texture felt out of place for me. 2/5 Not good (1) * Michelada: The Modelo beer foam dominated what I'm sure was lovely oyster.

The portions were large and honestly, easy to share. The fried calamari and shrimp and the shrimp scampi was SO GOOD. The cook was amazing, the shrimp were huge and had so much flavor. Something I was surprised by was the catfish. Holy crap. So much flavor and loved that it came with rice and potatoes. Get it. Just get it. The employees were efficient and helpful. If I'm in Chicago, I'll have to go back. Im dreaming of the fried calamari and shrimp combo and that catfish.

Well, this is an update to the review I made 4 years ago. Today was a better experience all around…read more We arrived around 2pm and it was not crowded at all. They added an enclosed outdoor seating area, Thats lets you enjoy the breeze or sun, but protects you from the rain. It used to be a tent, so this is definitely nicer. My wife and I were seated immediately. The server quickly brought us water and garlic bread. I really like that they give you 5 fairly big pieces of garlic bread for only two people. Nice touch. We were not in a hurry and couldn't decide what we wanted so we started with the calamari salad. $29, but it's huge and chock full of those calamari guys. Lettuce is always crisp and has everything I like in it (olives, eggs, carrots, artichoke, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and romaine lettuce). We were almost full just from the salad alone. I ordered a grouper sandwich (not fried), and my lovely wife ordered the Scottish salmon plate, which comes with potatoes and grilled vegetables. My sandwich came with coleslaw and fresh cut fries. They switched to fresh cut since my last visit, and this was an upgrade. My sandwich was great, and huge too. Could not finish it. Wife's meal was a humongous slab of salmon. The veggies now come on a smaller plate, but that's okay, given the size of the fish. Service was a tad slow, but like I said, we weren't in any hurry. Total tab was $100, with tax and that pesky 3% service fee. I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. It's not a place I can go every week, but when I can splurge, and have a taste for fresh seafood, this is the best around.
