Ambience
Spacious, good lighting, nice decor, clean bathrooms. Nothing is over the top, and the inside looks like 'the new place to go'. It sits in a more isolated part of W Loop, and they do their best to create a cute atmosphere for their outdoors. You can't fault them much for what's outside, but inside is fair game.
Food
The Grilled Mushroom & Lettuce Wrap was short of sensational... 4 uneven lettuce wraps with varying amounts of mushrooms and tofu. The taste was unremarkable. If the dish wasn't pre-assembled, it would have improved both texture and presentation. Quite frankly, this was no more elevated than ordering lettuce wraps at P.F. Chang's, possibly a better experience.
The Prosciutto & Gnocco Fritto was easily the best dish. The pillowy dough had just the right amount of airy chewiness and paired very well with the creamy cheese, jam, and Prosciutto. It was a complete turnaround in taste and experience. I nearly forgotten about the sad lettuce wraps.
The Soup Dumpling Tortellini was a clear cultural crossover or "fusion" which is a fine line to walk. Unfortunately, this was not on the line. The mushrooms started with plenty of umami but was followed by an overflooding of saltiness. The tortellini form factor and thickness of the pasta prevents you from fully enjoying the soup inside.
The Hay & Straw looked appealing, but makes you wonder why you have breakfast potatoes scattered throughout your fettuccini. We mixed the poached egg to coat the fettuccini. Not even two bites into the dish, you'll experience so much salt that it feels sour and acidic. I was on the cusp of spitting out my food.
There was a lot of excitement for the Japanese Sweet Potato. The potato itself was quite delicious. There was a nice touch of brûlée, and I would have been delighted with just an order of this. The Thai green curry itself was also good, with a balance of creaminess and spice, but still very salty. The pickled basil was an interesting choice, but the strong acidity and additional saltiness of the pickling distracted too much from the heart of the dish. I couldn't tell if I was supposed to be eating salt or a sweet potato. Together, the dish struggled as it was missing a cohesive element to bring everything together.
The turbot was quite tender but we found ourselves drowned in salt yet again. Just because it's fish, doesn't mean you have to bring the water where it swims. Breakfast potatoes keeping the turbot company, at least the fingerlings were good and actually not salty!
The Clay Pot Rice was another cultural blend. However, every bite felt more like a clash rather than a fusion of culture and food. It was an all out war in my mouth. You could see the rice was too wet and soggy, almost becoming congee. The restaurant experimented with flavors by using no flavor at all, topping the wet rice with unflavored tofu skin. If you miss texture, you gain grit with unflavored fava beans. While you work hard on your beans, you are perfectly distracted from the fact the pork belly needed to be more tender. This dish was an outright fail.
The Basque Butter Cake looked quite delicious and we were excited that this might salvage our meal. The strawberries had questionable freshness, and again we were having spoonfuls of salt. "Is it supposed to be salty?" echoed as we tried to take bites of the dessert. After finishing our meal, I wondered if anyone in the restaurant samples any of their own food before serving to their human customers.
Service Rating
Maybe the service made up for the food blunders, ....could it get any worse? Eliza was our server. Cordial, took the order, and then I believe she took a trip to Rome and came back to check on us twice before the check. Our table was pretty much unattended, A spoon fell off our table, and I asked one of the workers for a replacement. For whatever reason, the worker gave out a Santa Claus laugh and asked "where's your spoon!!?" He disappeared for the rest of the night, and I also never saw another spoon. I'm lost for words. I'm appalled that 20% gratuity was included and expected for this level of service. Failure.
Recommendation:
I generally give restaurants multiple chances, so it takes a lot for me to write a negative review. Especially for new restaurants, I like to experience as much of what they have to offer, so I know what I'd want the next time or even have recommendations for friends. Unfortunately, my recommendation is not to bother coming here if you're looking for anything good. There are many other restaurants in the community that deserve your support. read more
