We have been fans of Rose Mary since the beginning, thoroughly enjoying it as an alternative to a Monteverde when you want something more elevated and unique. After three or four stellar visits, we had a fairly rocky fifth that kept us away for the better part of two years. I'm glad to say that appears to have been just a brief bump in the road, and that Rose Mary remains an excellent spot for Italian/Croatian fusion. Everything is fresh and many dishes are seasonal, like the wonderful eggplant fritters with pesto dipping sauce. The batter on the eggplant wasn't too thick, nor was the fry too oily. Similarly excellent was the peach stracciatella, a combo I've never had before but will now crave, the brightness really shining through. But, the true star of the show was another seasonal dish, the chitarra with crab, corn, and truffle. This was a perfect dish, with every ingredient balancing each other out wonderfully. Just when the crab and sauce might be getting too much, you're hit with a pop of fresh corn. When you want a little different flavor, the umami of the truffle kind of steps in from the background. Really, really good. A very nice wine list, attentive service, lovely patio, and fair prices round out an excellent experience. read more

Don't get me wrong, food was delicious, but with how hyped up this place is I thought it was going to be the best meal of my life. It was extremely pricey for what you got. There were 2 of us and the $25 risotto was enough for 1 big spoonful of risotto each. Overall the food was great, but ultimately overpriced. The stracciatella was the star of the show! It had plums in it and was served with a yummy bread. Also they forgot our zucchini fritters and at the end they asked if we wanted dessert and we were like.... Came here while on a trip to Chicago and absolutely loved the food. We came here on a whim and wanted to splurge a little on our last night. Ambiance: Gorgeous and very open interior! The tables for 2 are small but dishes are split into courses as you order so it helps! Service: the front of house and servers were attentive and kind! Food: the lamb saddle was definitely a standout, it is a great size for sharing, I definitely wouldn't eat it alone. Came here with 2 friends and it was a delicious experience. Inside is a really great ambiance with lovely decor, perfect for a date night or a little yap session with friends! I got the crni and it was really flavorful. The squid pieces were crunchy on the outside but tender, and perfectly seasoned. My friend got the branzino and it was awesome. Flakey, light, and there were sausage pieces too that I personally thought were really flavorful, but my friend didn't like them too much. I would say maybe the sausage was a bit more rich and therefore not as great as a pairing with the flakey light branzino. My other friend got the ravioli and it was so delicious the filling was amazing. I am not sure the name of the drink I got but it was really good. Our server was fantastic as well! First time trying Italian-Croatian food. Definitely on the pricier side and the portions are not the biggest. If you come with a couple people you have to do family style and try a little bit of everything. My favorite dishes were the cevapi and the cacio r pepe. The cevapi was decently sized dish with the soft balkan flat bread (lepinja) and well paired with the sausage + dips. I love love loved the cacio e Pepe and it was perfectly cooked and the sauce packed a punch. This pasta dish is a bit heavy so you will get full instantly! Croatian Italian is a unique combo that caught my attention so a birthday dinner reservation was made at Rose Mary. This place can get noisy so it's difficult to hear the people you're with, and the atmosphere was giving countryside vibes. The staff here are friendly and check in the just the right amount. My server suggested we order two dishes per person since everything was shareable and smaller in size compared to traditional Italian restaurants. Plates and utensils get changed out after every series. I ordered a rosemary spritz which was pleasant and bright. The stracciatella which was a nice start and a surprisingly large serving of macerated cherries in a light bed of buffalo mozzarella slices and sauce and a side of flatbread which helped scoop up the sauce. The grilled clams were detached from the shells which was a nice touch, and sat in a smoked pepper butter. The mezzaluna was presented well. I was thinking the lamb pancetta was going to be saltier, but it wasn't at all. Ended with pork ribs pampanella which were plentiful and grilled, but not spicy which I thought pampanella was. The meat was slightly tender but still had enough chew. Rose Mary has a good staff and a large kitchen bustling with activity, but the cross section of Croatian and Italian didn't do it for me. The menu has a wide variety to choose from, but I'd prefer a setting in which I can hear my party. The drinks and service were a highlight of the night, but the food came up short. read more

It had been a long while since I've been here but was in the area so thought to swing in. It's the same open and bright ambiance but the server was not attentive and incredibly rude. Know they do not accommodate any allergies and according to the server "the Chef will not alter or substitute anything" so they try to point you to other things on the menu but then get snippy if it's not something you want to try. We have to say that the dining experience we had last night at Rose Mary was the best we have ever had. This was a beautiful, lively Croatian and Italian fusion restaurant. The staff were very attentive and friendly. We sat at the chef's table, which made the experience even more special, to watch our food being prepared right in front of us. I've been hanging around Chicago's food scene since ye olde meat-and-potatoes days (who else remembers Ronny's $1.79 steak dinners?). Hoo-ee, we've come a long way! Today, innovation layered on top of innovation makes 'normal' food seem humdrum, and that's where Rose Mary shines. Getting a prime time reservation here is like trying to nail Jello to the wall. The hack is to do it online at 12:00:01 AM exactly 30 days before the desired date; preferred time slots tend to fill up quickly. The Missus and I went for dinner on a Sunday. The décor is contemporary and exciting; even when the restaurant is crowded (which I'm told is always), you don't feel hemmed in. The fusion menu is unequivocally unique. I suppose you could call it "Crotalian." Cevapi meets cacio e pepe! Our server was professional and efficient. She knew every nuance of the menu and food prep, and was there whenever we needed something. Although the menu is not huge, there are some vegetarian-friendly items and also the kitchen offers a dairy-free menu, perfect for my cheese-averse Missus. Rose Mary encourages diners to order at least two dishes per person and share, share, share. But c'mon, our utensils were never replenished and we also had to reuse the same dinner plates for each course. We feasted on roasted pear salad, sweet potato, branzino, and pork ribs pampanella. Composed of high-quality ingredients and inventive flavor combinations, each dish blew us completely away. I particularly enjoyed the pork ribs - Italianized Texas BBQ plated in a pool of spicy sweet & sour sauce. The meat (tender but thankfully NOT 'fall-off-the-bone') had a nice crunchy char amplified by chopped walnuts. I requested the accompanying "cabbage & yogurt relish" (Greek coleslaw, I suppose) served on the side, not dolloped onto the ribs. For dessert, my Missus had chocolate gelato and I went for the cherry sorbetta. The latter's flavor was so intense and tart, it was like sucking on a raw lemon. Not my favorite. I went for restaurant week this past Friday and this was a great menu to try different dishes. One thing that I'd like to point out that was a little confusing is that you share the courses. So on the menu you get everything on it but share it with the person you come with - I'm not sure maybe they put smaller portions if you're by yourself? Service was nice and the food came quick. I liked the sweet potatoes they were vinegary which is different. The tuna crudo was my favorite by far. The Cacio Pepe was ok nothing special. I was looking forward to the steak but it was kind of basic nothing too special - I didn't really like the beets. The toffee pudding for dessert was also good. Restaurant week was well worth it! We had a party of 4 and it was a bit confusing at first how it works. Essentially you get everything on the menu but you share it as a pair. The Restaurant Week offering is very limited: two choices per course and one dessert option.But the main downside was value and portions. You get one small dessert to share for two which was surprising and my first time seeing this during Restaurant Week. I also noticed our crudo came with four pieces, while others who also did RW got six, which felt inconsistent. I think they determine the portions based on the number of people dining and everything is meant to be shared, which I thought was very confusing given the portions. Overall, their approach to Restaurant Week feels off and not the best value. It would have been helpful for the server to explain this at the beginning. I would recommend trying out the regular menu instead. The meals however were delicious. The tuna crudo was incredibly fresh with great garnishes, and the cacio e pepe was solid. The sweet potatoes were definitely a highlight, unfortunately the steak was just okay, maybe a personal preference but was not wowed. Their take on sticky toffee was also decent. I'm at the point of being over the concept of upscale restaurants having very small portions for the sake of having small portions. My husband and I came here for New Year's Eve dinner 12/31/2025. It was our first time here. We ordered a bottle of red wine (Domaine Bessa Valley petit enira 2019) that was very good. And we shared the NYE menu. This was SO much food! It was all incredible. The servers were on point and the service was excellent. Bread: this was very good and a nice touch since it wasn't on the menu. The flaky salt was great. Tuna crudo: this was fabulous. Grilled oysters: this was my second time eating oysters. The first was elsewhere and they were presumably raw. This was a delicious bite of food and now I understand why people like oysters! Pasta: this was one of the best things all night. It was absolutely heavenly. Divine! It had lamb in it. I was shocked by how good this was. Risotto: this was my least favorite thing we had. The risotto was undercooked. The flavors were interesting and not what I was expecting, but I did like it. Dry aged strip: this was delectable! The mushrooms and hollandaise were room temp which was a little odd but it didn't matter because it was all so delicious. We could not finish the steak. Sweet potatoes: this was very rich and also large! Sweet potatoes with crème fraiche and also sweet potato chips.... Brilliant! I really enjoyed this, and we also took some of this home. Toffee dessert: this was a really well crafted dish. The cake with the toffee sauce, the bourbon whipped cream, the nuts, and the vanilla ice cream, plus the orange segments. It was a beautiful way to end the evening! And while it was rich, it wasn't overly sweet or cloying which is impressive with that many things going on. I really enjoyed this! All in all, we had an absolutely fantastic time. We were seated at the bar, and 3 of the chefs working on bread and tuna crudo were working near that end of the open kitchen. Had dinner at Rose Mary and ordered the gnocchi with beef cheek, the crni risotto, the baby octopus peka style, and the cevapi. Being of Croatian descent, these dishes really hit home. The flavors felt both familiar and elevated, almost like a modern take on the meals I grew up around. The gnocchi was rich and comforting, with beef cheek that just melted. The best plate of the night. The crni risotto had that deep, briny flavor I've always loved, and it was easily one of the standouts. Service was attentive without being rushed, and the atmosphere had an energy that made the whole experience even better. Staff always came and filled up the waters, and picked up the dishes very quickly once finished. Rose Mary was not on my radar but I am happy I tried it. We made a reservation for two the day before. This place is pretty popular and fills up quickly. So I definitely recommend a reservation. We were seated right away. They require you to order all at once. So we started with cocktails we both had the honey vespa it was amazing love the sourness of it not too over powering. For appetizers we had the zucchini fritters they came with a pesto aoli it was very different from what I ever had but I liked it. The brussel sprouts were well cooked and flavorful. For the pasta we had rigatoni and cacacio e pepe. I wasnt a fan of the rigatoni it was well cooked but the cacacio e pepe was the star. We then ordered the pork ribs and lamb saddle. The ribs were a bit dry. That egg plant sauce under the perfectly cooked and tender lamb was delicious. I also tried the cocktail called "actin up" which is made with mezcal I didnt care for it. I specifically asked the waitress if the mezcal was very smokey and she said no but it was. For dessert we had the pistachio tart which was very good. On Sunday night, we were able to walk in and were seated at the Chef's Counter, which was such an intimate and interactive experience! If you have the chance to sit at the chef's counter though, I would advise you take it!! For the food, we ordered the zucchini fritters, stracciatella, radiatore "cacio e pepe", caramelle, and the crni. The server also gave us a side of roasted cauliflower. Everything was shareable and was a great size for a party of 3. To start, I loved the zucchini fritters, I can see why so many orders came in! The sauce that was paired with it was delightful! I will say the stracciatella was my least favorite of the bunch, but it was still good, I think I just pictured to be better in my mind. However, the roasted cauliflower, blew me out the water. I loved the pairing of the pine nuts with the preserved lemon chili crisp. That will probably be a staple for us now! For the mains, the cacio e pep was to die for, we couldn't stop eating it! The caramelle, I think fell short in comparison, but it was definitely unique and it was worth a try. Lastly, the risotto was so delicious. Wow, this place lives up to the hype. The food is incredible and the environment is welcoming and lively with a warm glow. We were excited to try it because we love watching Top Chef and the owner and head chef won season 15. Our server Nina was really sweet and caring. We could tell that she loves her job and goes above and beyond to care for guests and share details about how the food is prepared. There is a great view of the kitchen from the dining room and I noticed how everyone seemed focused and calm while cooking. We started with the Brussels sprouts and I honestly think they are the best I've had in my life. They have a perfect grilled texture with a complex vinaigrette that is earthy, bright, tangy, and well balanced. I loved the texture and added layer of flavor from the toppings. The spinach artichoke risotto was surprisingly bright and creamy and we loved it. It made me think that a vegetarian would be happy here, because all of the veggies were prepared so well. We also loved the pork ribs and the slaw really took the dish to the next level. I received a gluten free menu and was happy with the number of options I had to choose from. I walked in. I saw an open seat at the bar. I sat down at the open seat at the bar. Simple, right? Wrong. A staff member came over to inform me that I could not just sit at the open bar seat. First I had to walk back to the host stand, wait in line, and ask permission to find out whether I might be allowed to sit at the seat I was already sitting in. Read that again. I had to get up, go stand in line, and ask if I could sit in the empty seat I was already in. This is the most backwards policy I have ever encountered in a restaurant. The DMV doesn't even make you do this, and the DMV is where joy goes to die. But this place looked at the ancient human tradition of "sit at the empty bar seat" and turned it into a bureaucratic approval process complete with a waiting list. I did not eat. I did not drink. I never made it past the absurdity of being told to go ask permission to keep doing the thing I was already doing. Save yourself and stay home. Your couch does not require you to check in with a host stand. read more

We were lucky enough to get last-minute reservations to celebrate my husband passing the bar, and the staff made it feel so special. At least four different employees congratulated him during our meal, which was such a thoughtful touch. We started with prosecco to toast, then followed their recommendation of about four plates for two people. We ordered the tuna crudo, cacio e pepe, cevapi, and skradin risotto. The tuna crudo and cacio e pepe were our absolute favorites, and we also really loved the skradin risotto. We spent a month in Croatia this summer, so we had to try the cevapi, but it didn't quite compare to what we had there, it wasn't even similar. Rose Mary was delicious! We tried about 8 different dishes and all were incredible. I am not a huge zucchini fan but the zucchini fritters are a must try! I love the decor and ambiance of this place. Our waiter was also really helpful in helping us decide what wine to order for the table. I love how everything was brought out at separate times for each course and the ribs were perfectly tender and saucy! read more
