Apparently this place has new ownership as of the last couple years, but the spirit of the original is still in the menu. Good ole country dining with an amazing staff that is very diligent and kind. There are certain things that you won't get here that you can get down the road at Waffle House or at Dennys... For me, I gotta have peanut butter with my pancakes... However, there is a choice from the staff to serve their own unique items (which is respectable) that you also won't get at said establishments. Everything is yummy. There's no bad ingredients, and nothing tastes cheap. For Austinites, it's very similar to what you might could get at Kerby Lane (ALSO crowded but yummy - establishment). The one tick in stars is depending on when you go. It's can be an absolute pain to get a spot here, and just like the rest of Central Texas, it's often SOOO crowded. It's a cute place though. YUM!!!! Did I just sit down in my grandma's kitchen? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this cafe!!! We just wanted a semi-clean (not too greasy/heavy) breakfast, and got the rise and shine special, coffees + side of avocado w/ wheat toast and we loved it. Bacon was crispy and thick cut, nothing was over salted or over seasoned. COFFEE WAS GREAT TOO. Love the mismatch mugs. Servers were super nice and not annoying at all ( you how some come back to your table 8 times and ask if you need anything else, and interrupt conversations and you feel pushed out of the door - wasn't that at all). Great service here!!! Ambiance was true to the photos and appropriate to this charming town. Lots of fun Texas Grandpa signs (our favorite being "love your enemies but keep your gun oiled"). I have been here maybe 7 or 8 times now. This is a great smaller "mom and pop" place. The food is fantastic and plates come out full. Service is usually good. It gets a bit busy on weekend mornings but it's worth the wait. read more

First of all I've been coming here a few years with my wife and we love this place and the staff have always been beyond kind to us ! Except today, there was a new young lady by the name of MACY that was pretty rude to us from the beginning, telling us to leave the lobby entrance (where no one was present today) but that's understandable, after that she skipped us in line and just all around did not like us for no reason, it was a odd situation and I hate to complain but hopefully me doing so will help her be not so aggressive towards patrons in the future . read more

I eat out twice a day, everyday and today was the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. I sat there waiting for at least 30 minutes before I even had a waitress stop by my table..... then I waited and waited and waited for food that never arrived! I said, "Excuse me." To the waitress after waiting an hour and she acted like it was the worst thing in the world to be spoken to by a customer. I walked out. Will never be back. I love the food but the service is slightly lower quality than wet toilet paper. I spoke to the assistant manager who looked just old enough to work, to share my experience and she said sorry about that and when I said I won't be back she said, "okay" so at least we're in agreement. read more

We love Maxine's. Lacy is a fantastic waitress? All of them are but we get her the most. The pancakes are bigger than your head, so take head before ordering more than one. Great breakfast or brunch spot. Make sure to try the Benedict, chicken and waffles, and the Mote Christo. read more

What a great example of small town comfort food and charm!!! While traveling back home from Aggieland, we made our way through the small town of Bastrop, Texas. Limited parking and seating will be an issue here, yet once you get inside and to your table, the smell of pancakes and eggs will definitely catch your senses. At first, I wanted fried green tomatoes, but this place had me at breakfast!!! My grilled pork chop was cooked nicely - juicy and flavorful! I was happy to have the flavors coat the potatoes! The rye toast tasted great with butter and the strawberry jam. The whole family was a fan of the pecan praline pancakes that were topped with candied pecans. We'll definitely make our way back to this place for dinner and those fried green tomatoes! P.S. Two snaps for Maxine's representing the old school Texas State days with a SWT cap! I'm posting this which I also posted on another website. I have been visiting and sending people to Maxine's for years but that's probably over. The food has never been fancy but was great comfort food, particularly the breakfast and, even more specifically, the biscuits. Wife and I went to Maxine's last November and it was as good as it had ever been. We took our sons there last weekend and it was a 180 degree difference. I'm enclosing pictures of the food and they look better than the food tasted. I ordered a variation on Eggs Benedict where they use a biscuit instead an English Muffin, and a sausage patty instead of Canadian bacon. The Hollandaise sauce had little taste and was, at best, lukewarm. The biscuit tasted like a mix rather than the great biscuits they used to have, and the sausage patty was nearly tasteless. My wife ordered a "griddle cake" which was just a huge pancake. Unfortunately it was dense and heavy, and the remainder of the food we bought for all of us could have been purchased anywhere without the long drive to Bastrop (the "home fries" went straight from a freezer bag into a fryer, no seasonings, etc. ), the 20-30 minute wait, and the higher price. IHOP would have been a better choice on this day. The biscuits looked and tasted like they were made from Bisquik mix. If you've ever had a good, fluffy, homemade biscuit and then tried one from the mix you can see and taste the difference quickly. I don't post negative reviews a lot but I guess I'd better start if it will save someone a drive. We spent about $18 a person on breakfast and could have gotten the same a few miles away for less money or saved a lot and gotten great food at any Waffle House. The service, however, was good. The food was great. But the service was abysmal. Everyone around us had the same experience. Drinks took 30 min plus to arrive and in our case and a neighboring table, our drinks arrived after our food. Two tables got up and left. My husband actually went into inquire about our drinks and found out our food was ready. But not our drinks. They arrived ten minutes after our food. Seriously I can't recommend this place. I suppose they could have had a bunch of staff walk out... but hubbie said the kitchen area was full of workers. They were more interested in gabbing than serving. Management problems?!? I'm a local who has been eating at Maxine's since 2017 and always had good experiences until today. I haven't visited since COVID and am sad at the change that has seemed to happen to the quality of food. I ordered eggs Benedict and asked for no Canadian bacon. Honestly it shouldn't be that weird of a request. It came with home fried potatoes. I had to pull off 4 strips of Canadian bacon. Doing that removed much of the Hollandaise, which is one of the treats of eggs Benedict. The Hollandaise tasted like a Vick's cough drop. It had a white cast to it, and Hollandaise should have a rich yellow color. The WORST part was that it had been showered with powdered CINNAMON. Yuck. That is not Hollandaise. Nowhere in the world is that some quirky flavor twist for Hollandaise. The English muffins were hard like a sponge and I had to use a knife to cut bites. The home fried potatoes were small cubes and were hard as rocks and sounded like rocks being pushed around my plate. Completely without any flavor and like chewing Styrofoam. The final blow was that all of it was cold. No heat like food having just been cooked. Unfortunately no longer the wonderful destination breakfast that Maxine's has always been famous for. read more

Maxine's is a great spot for lunch. The atmosphere is wonderful, wait staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant felt like small town cafe with generous menu items and desserts. My only gripe was that food service was slow. We arrived with party of 4 at lunch during a standard weekday. The kitchen seemed quite understaffed while the front of house was overly staffed. At one point I counted 8 people waiting tables, bussing tables and assisting with water/food. When I went to restroom there were maybe 3 people in the kitchen. That seemed a bit disproportionate imo. The wait for food was at least 40 minutes which really seemed a lot longer considering it was lunch time. The food (once it arrived) was warm, not hot but warm. The portion sizes were fine and it tasted great. There were no complaints from us. The other downside however was the cleanliness, or lack of cleanliness, of the restrooms. There was paper and water (hopefully water) everywhere. The trash bins were overflowing and it was just a mess. This applied to both women and men restrooms. The doors were wide open on both when you came around the corner. This part of the experience could have been better. However, overall the restaurant was a great place to eat and though food took a little long, it was still pleasant. I would recommend this cafe to others looking for a solid lunch/breakfast establishment in Bastrop. read more

What a great find! We came to Maxine now several times after we found it on Yelp. Lovely delicious true Texan breakfast. Plates are always so full of food and always we leave full, sometimes even take boxes of leftovers. This time I had "Rise and Shine" : two eggs, sausage, grits and homemade jelly. Even eggs taste so good, not sure where they get eggs from, but they taste so much better than the ones I get from HEB. Sausage was very flavorful. Grits simple but tasty. Bisquit very large and very homemade. My husband had "Willie's Hearty Breakfast" withfrench toast with nuts. He enjoyed all of it very much. Service is always great. Sometimes there is a line on weekends, but they tend to seat fast. I definitely recommend it. read more

This is a great little treasure. Even after the lunch rush people were still coming in. There were several large parties and a lot of people had the chicken fried steak on their plates. I ordered the chicken fried steak but thankfully, I ordered the half order. The half order was a perfect size for lunch. I also wanted to try some pie so I didn't finish the mound fries on my plate. The fries were lightly battered and perfectly fried. After powering through the chicken fried steak and a couple fries, I went up to the pie case and ordered a slice of the Elvis pie. When I got the pie, it was a heaping mound of whip cream on top of a thin layer of pie filling. I would've liked the filling to be a little bit thicker. read more

Went on a Sunday, and boy were they busy but worth the wait if you're into diner foods like me :). Plus it was a beautiful day to wait outside. I ordered the steak(sirloin) and eggs with home fries and a biscuit. The steak was actually a nice, thick, piece of steak that they kitchen actually cooked medium which was awesome considering other places serve a thin steak. The eggs were delicious, and the seasoning on the home fries were bomb-diggity. I loved how they served a good cup of coffee in mismatched mugs and the biscuits were nice and chunky. I will definitely come back and try more biscuit related items cuz it was so good! The staff was super friendly and attentive considering how busy they were. A plus was that they seemed like a well oiled machine rolling out delicious foods. We had to wait a bit for our food to come out -again it was the Sunday crowd- but it was worth it. I will be back to try their eggs benedict that looked velvety with that hollandaise sauce that I saw come out of the kitchen and I hear their pies and desserts are delicious as well. I came here because I have a long list of places to check out based on magazine & newspaper articles and this was the nearest thing to where I was going. I think I should clear out the list because some of these were written too long ago. If I were a local, I would go here frequently but this wasn't close to being magazine worthy. The restaurant has a great Texas charm. I liked the way the seating was laid out - plenty of it, but didn't feel cramped. Certainly didn't get hip slammed and was close to where the cooks passed out the food. The wait staff varied tremendously. Some were very nice, sweet and engaged. Some looked like they would like to tear their/your hair out. The waitress next to me refusing to take the table's picture because "she was too busy" kinda did it in for me. We took care of that. I had the chicken fried steak. Go with a 1/2 portion! It was big and the full was just obscenely large. The meat was very chewy and the chicken fried was VERY crunchy. Maybe the oil was too hot. The gravy needed a little kick (maybe just some pepper). The mashed potatoes were a pass. Likely stayed in a container for way too long before being served. Green beans seemed under cooked or bland. Either way, I didn't finish. I couldn't believe it, but I also got a slice of pie afterwards. My date was NOT going to share her banana cream pie and pointedly told me that in many ways, many times. So I was happy to order my own pecan pie. It was VERY good. Don't often see pecan pie with chopped bits on top. I don't know if it's cheaper that way or their style. Either way, it tasted good and I loved their filling. Pro-tip: Decent place to eat, just don't drive to it as a destination. read more

Disappointed! I am a pancake lover and ordered a Griddle Cake with Bacon. The cake was huge...larger than the plate. I believe quantity was a substitute for quality. The flavor was nonexistent until you added syrup. The syrup was tasty. The pancake was stiff and difficult to fold over to fit on the plate. Stiff and tasteless. Think cardboard. The staff person that "greeted and sat us" (female with black and pink hair) was almost the reason we left and didn't eat.
