Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs.
Mo A.

Breakfast was great and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with the biscuit. The chicken fried steak was nice and crispy and the gravy was flavorful. The biscuit was a little dry. My boys ordered the two egg breakfast with the griddle cakes. The griddle cakes were huge and delicious.

Back fairly quick with the GD in tow...and sadly this was nowhere as good as our first visit. Service was definitely lacking, and we were there early...wife went with the Rise and Shine special...luke warm at best, potatoes soft...there crazy crispy and hot last round...burnt the first round of toast and took way to long for the replacement...its toast...My chicken fried steak was really good, tender...over easy eggs were a bit under on the whites....taters a miss a well....The GD went with eggs and a couple of sausage patties...that was pretty good...and we all shared a huge pancake...good flavor but really hard to cut thru...not burnt of anything....we won't write it off just yet...the first time was so good, we can try again....everyone has an off day.

Tried something new with avacado toast. It was wonderful. The atmosphere is always casual and the staff are great. Emerald gave amazing service and always has a smile. The cook absolutely takes pride in his work. Food tastes great and the presentation is beautiful. Love this restaurant in Bastrop. Highly recommend.

this place is packed so there was a long wait after we ordered, but service was friendly. the price is a steal considering how huge the platters are. their catfish and chicken melt were grilled perfectly, and we loved the hushpuppies and sweet potato fries. you can also sub egg whites for free, which went well with their homemade salsa. their jam and pies are on the sweeter side though. also just a heads up that they automatically include credit card service fee in the check.

Slid right in on a Sunday morning and grabbed a table for 2. Cute cafe in downtown Bastrop with a little outdoor seating. I got the chicken fried steak/4/4 could have used more seasoning on the gravy and steak. Husband got the Texas scrambler and liked his 4/4- pretty much a deconstructed bkft taco. They make their jam in house and it's good but I suggest spreading it when you are about to eat it as it is watery and soaks into the toast!

Found ourselves in Bastrop, on an exploration day. Say all the reviews for "Maxine's Cafe" so we headed there. Just so happens to be the day before a big car-show"Hero's and Hot Rods" a local Veterans Day celebration. Although there was a bit of a line at the front door, we were seated fairly quickly. The service here is amazing. We were acknowledged by our server right away, letting us know she'd be right with us. She'd just received two more tables just ahead of us. This allowed us time to check out the menu. Wow! Home style southern cooking just as you'd expect. I ordered "Chicken & Waffles", deep fried chicken breast, atop a fresh waffle. Choice of syrup or gravy (I chose both on the side). The combination was fantastic. Wife chose Half order (1 biscuit cut in half), of Biscuit with sausage gravy. It was quite "amazing". Now I know I use that word a lot, but nothing else comes to mind. Hot fluffy biscuit, smothered with sausage gravy with bits of country sausage sprinkled on top. It was simply "amazing"!!! Bastrop folks are very friendly and naturally kind hearted. My table neighbor commented on my appetite, as I didn't leave much left on my plate. The food is very good, the value is there and the ambiance is inviting. It can handle small or large groups. Just a nice place to refresh and refill will checking out the town. So, come on over to Maxine's and check out the amazing food, you won't regret it. Michael C. - Georgetown,Tx.

The food as always is absolutely delicious! The wait is worth it! Breakfast and lunch has never tasted better! The sweet tea is outta this world! The service is wonderful always smiles and quick!! The decorations make the place feel even more like old home and if you get the chance, ask for Linda the server! She's been her for 15 years!!

Omelette (add the Cholula yourself)

Not for me. Food was bland, and it took a while to get utensils after the food was served. Oatmeal portion was generous but way too soft for my preference. Omelette was ok but it didn't have seasoning or other things to pull the ingredients together. The food was prepared well and service was ok, but I've had better choices at Denny's, Waffle House, or any Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast. Probably just my personal preference, but the food was bland, not interesting. They did have Cholula though.

Stopped in twice on a recent visit for breakfast. As usual, the service is great and the food is very satisfying and good. Lots of options for a vegetarian. Still one of my favorites in Bastrop.

Lovely little spot in Bastrop Tx. I had the Greek salad while Tom enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich with sweet potato fries. Everything including the ice tea was great!. They also have tables on the front porch if you are like us and travel with a Pup

Most pathetic club sandwich I've ever had. Mostly bread with micro slices of meat. Didn't include the tomato listed on the menu and they serve it dry with mayo packets on the plate. Wilted lettuce. Ordered onion rings on the side and they dumped whatever fried remnants were left in the fryer basket on my plate. Also took 30 minutes to get our food from the time we ordered. Will not be back.

This place is delicious! The serving sizes are huge no matter what you order. The food is all home style, country cooking. You can't go wrong with whatever you choose. We have been for both breakfast and dinner and both experiences were great. The service is always friendly. The ambiance could use a little update but it definitely adds to the small town charm of the place. Be prepared for a little bit of a wait when you go, but it will be worth it!

Famous Fried Green Tomato BLT Sandwich with jalapeño cream cheese. I recommend getting the cream cheese on the side.

We left with some leftovers, of course! The sandwiches were on Texas toast and were super good, for a very reasonable price! My favorite of the sides were the potatoes, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. I was so tempted by baked goods but it felt like we had enough food already. If I'm back in bastrop I'll have to try some, along with the brunch items. The folks working there were all super friendly and attentive. The inside was nicely renovated but still homey/quaint. We ate outside in the back with our dogs, which was also nice. Plenty of shade, too. You won't regret stopping here if you're in Bastrop!

My husband's go to is always a burger and he enjoyed his brunch burger (with an egg) as well. My kiddos got the ham and cheese sandwich kids meal and gobbled up theirs too! So overall a success for our family :) The potatoes/tots were included with our meals and they were unique but definitely very salty. The friends we ate with had grits and biscuits and gravy and commented theirs were also pretty salty, but still good! Service was simple - you line up and order and then find seating until your beeper rings. We enjoyed the outdoor seating out back but there's also a decent amount of seating in the interior.

They have gluten free options as well as vegan options and options for those who can have gluten. I went there for three out of the six days that I was on vacation in that area. I had originally wanted a chocolate chip cookie, but they didn't do just regular gluten free ones. However they did have gluten free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. I'm not a big fan of peanut butter, but I thought I would try it since I was really craving a cookie. I had just the one, and it was so so so good! It didn't taste overly of peanut butter which was a win for me! It had just the right amount of peanut butter and chocolate chips. It was crispy around the edges and chewy towards the middle. I went back that same day and got two more of those cookies. The other days I went I got the same thing. One day, I did try their gluten free apple butter bar which was just as amazing! Service was fantastic! Each day I went, there was someone I hadn't seen before working. Each of them were super nice and friendly. The bakery itself had a very calm ambiance about it. It had a lot of space inside if you wanted to eat your meal or dessert inside or you could get it to go. I also love how Tough Cookie Bakery supports the LGBTQ+ community. There was a pride flag painted outside of the bakery, and that just made me love the place that much more! I would definitely recommend Tough Cookie Bakery in Bastrop. I can't wait to go back once we're back in the area at the end of this month.

The only letdown was finding out that the ice cream isn't homemade or unique to the shop--it's just Blue Bell. Now, as a lifelong Blue Bell fan, I'll never turn it down, but with a place that has so much originality and character, we were hoping for a menu that reflected that same spirit. Still, it's a cute spot and worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.

And they offer both options every day/all day, which is great. She'll come back with her sister to enjoy it again. I had two breakfast tacos: one with egg, sausage and cheese and the other with migas. I really loved the migas. While the first taco was unremarkable, the migas was great. It was perfect, in fact. And it really celebrates their home made corn and flour tortillas. The only thing I didn't like was the salsa. It tasted like canned tomatoes and it was a wee bit salty and not very spicy. I really liked the migas, though. It was made with fresh jalapeño and had just the right amount of heat without needing any salsa. So I think this is one of those places that does some things very well... enough to build up a solid base of regulars, even though some of their other offerings were disappointing, like improperly reheated enchiladas. But if you know what to order, you can really enjoy this place. Oddly enough, they have chorizo on the menu, but don't list it among the available proteins on the breakfast taco menu, which I personally find very strange. Chorizo and egg is such an iconic breakfast taco offering. I'll bet they'd do it justice.
