    French toast with blueberries
    Jeanette C.

Went to breakfast with my family that lives close to bastrop. It's a very small place do def get there early. You can tell everything is freshly made my husband got the biscuit and gravy and said they were good. I tried a bit an they were def good. I got the hearty breakfast with French toast eggs, bacon and potatoes. The potatoes were very crispy, bacon was cooked really well and eggs. French toast could use some more flavor but still good. Our girls for the kids French toast which is two pieces. My brother in law had the monte cristo he said it was kinda small and could have used more meat inside not very filling. Service was great, our serve was great she was good with all the kids, she even put up my daughters drawing on there board, which my daughter was super super excited about. I wish I got more photos but I was so hungry I forgot until I was already eating.

I was finally able to get here for breakfast. The place doesn't have air conditioning but it's still cooler inside. Texas heat is no joke. I love that they serve Pepsi in a jar that they use for glasses. I ordered French Toast (suggested by the server) and a breakfast taco (eggs, cheddar and avocado). The French toast was not big at all so I could easily enjoy my taco. The server was friendly. The restaurant has tables only. And the bathroom could definitely use some TLC. All in all food and service were good. Food was tasty.

Popped in on our drive through the area and so glad that we did! Cute historic downtown area. Very cool vibe and great food! Our party ordered: Chicken fried steak-best they ever had. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage were really good. The praline french toast was on another level of amazing! Was told the cinnamon roll was great but the key lime pie was not, due to too much whipped cream. Service was decent and everyone got everything they needed. This place is amazing! We will return!

I haven't had a Monte Cristo since the days of Bennigan's--almost 20 years ago--so my expectations were very high when I saw this much beloved dish on the menu. While this wasn't quite the nostalgic Monte Cristo I remembered, it was definitely good enough to scratch the itch. It even came with that sweet jam dipping sauce that's a must with a Monte Cristo. The sandwich had great flavor and held its own, and the fries were perfectly crispy and crunchy. Great rendition of a classic with a homemade take that still hit all the right notes.

The food as always is absolutely delicious! The wait is worth it! Breakfast and lunch has never tasted better! The sweet tea is outta this world! The service is wonderful always smiles and quick!! The decorations make the place feel even more like old home and if you get the chance, ask for Linda the server! She's been her for 15 years!!

Breakfast was great and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with the biscuit. The chicken fried steak was nice and crispy and the gravy was flavorful. The biscuit was a little dry. My boys ordered the two egg breakfast with the griddle cakes. The griddle cakes were huge and delicious.

Back fairly quick with the GD in tow...and sadly this was nowhere as good as our first visit. Service was definitely lacking, and we were there early...wife went with the Rise and Shine special...luke warm at best, potatoes soft...there crazy crispy and hot last round...burnt the first round of toast and took way to long for the replacement...its toast...My chicken fried steak was really good, tender...over easy eggs were a bit under on the whites....taters a miss a well....The GD went with eggs and a couple of sausage patties...that was pretty good...and we all shared a huge pancake...good flavor but really hard to cut thru...not burnt of anything....we won't write it off just yet...the first time was so good, we can try again....everyone has an off day.

Tried something new with avacado toast. It was wonderful. The atmosphere is always casual and the staff are great. Emerald gave amazing service and always has a smile. The cook absolutely takes pride in his work. Food tastes great and the presentation is beautiful. Love this restaurant in Bastrop. Highly recommend.

this place is packed so there was a long wait after we ordered, but service was friendly. the price is a steal considering how huge the platters are. their catfish and chicken melt were grilled perfectly, and we loved the hushpuppies and sweet potato fries. you can also sub egg whites for free, which went well with their homemade salsa. their jam and pies are on the sweeter side though. also just a heads up that they automatically include credit card service fee in the check.

Slid right in on a Sunday morning and grabbed a table for 2. Cute cafe in downtown Bastrop with a little outdoor seating. I got the chicken fried steak/4/4 could have used more seasoning on the gravy and steak. Husband got the Texas scrambler and liked his 4/4- pretty much a deconstructed bkft taco. They make their jam in house and it's good but I suggest spreading it when you are about to eat it as it is watery and soaks into the toast!

Lovely little spot in Bastrop Tx. I had the Greek salad while Tom enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich with sweet potato fries. Everything including the ice tea was great!. They also have tables on the front porch if you are like us and travel with a Pup

Found ourselves in Bastrop, on an exploration day. Say all the reviews for "Maxine's Cafe" so we headed there. Just so happens to be the day before a big car-show"Hero's and Hot Rods" a local Veterans Day celebration. Although there was a bit of a line at the front door, we were seated fairly quickly. The service here is amazing. We were acknowledged by our server right away, letting us know she'd be right with us. She'd just received two more tables just ahead of us. This allowed us time to check out the menu. Wow! Home style southern cooking just as you'd expect. I ordered "Chicken & Waffles", deep fried chicken breast, atop a fresh waffle. Choice of syrup or gravy (I chose both on the side). The combination was fantastic. Wife chose Half order (1 biscuit cut in half), of Biscuit with sausage gravy. It was quite "amazing". Now I know I use that word a lot, but nothing else comes to mind. Hot fluffy biscuit, smothered with sausage gravy with bits of country sausage sprinkled on top. It was simply "amazing"!!! Bastrop folks are very friendly and naturally kind hearted. My table neighbor commented on my appetite, as I didn't leave much left on my plate. The food is very good, the value is there and the ambiance is inviting. It can handle small or large groups. Just a nice place to refresh and refill will checking out the town. So, come on over to Maxine's and check out the amazing food, you won't regret it. Michael C. - Georgetown,Tx.

And the place is a time machine, rolling back the decades. Little has changed here in the past three quarters of a century, which makes it very charming. They have farm-fresh eggs, locally-grown salad greens, sausage, cheese, breakfast tacos, baked-from-scratch pop tarts, Texas pretzel bread and other items in this small store, without feeling crowded. At the coffee bar, I had a cortado (Spain's take on a cappuccino -- equal parts espresso and steamed milk) along with a little chocolate truffle. We also picked up some Opa Klein's amazing summer sausage and a six pack of Stash IPA to go. We're coffee snobs. We'll be back for the best cuppa joe in town, at a minimum. Special thanks to Mike K (one of Tracy's baristas) for telling us about this place as he serenaded us during brunch at downtown restaurant. He's a very talented guy, and very proud to be associated with this quaint and historic Bastrop fixture. You know you're doing something right as a business owner when your staff naturally delivers your best and most effective marketing, just from the sheer enthusiasm and pride of working there. So, yeah, it's a tiny little time warp, but it's well run and worth coming to, especially if you're into great coffee.

Even more than that, the staff is amazing. Each person was so kind and personable - made our day and felt like "home" (we are visiting from out of town). They even put up with my twin three-year-olds who were unwinding for lack of a nap today, and they made a bit of a mess on the way out. When we went to tidy things up, instead of eye rolls or frustration (which would be understandable) one of the managers gave us some fresh salsa to take home and try. Talk about understanding and kind - these people care, and it showed in each aspect of our visit today. We will be back for sure (but maybe leave the twins with a sitter next time;-). During that time, Coffee Dog was reliable, welcoming, and worth recommending. Unfortunately, under new ownership, that is no longer the case. This morning was the final straw. I placed my order and waited over 30 minutes, only to receive absolutely nothing. After my order was taken, I reasonably assumed it was being prepared. Instead, a different employee later came to the window and asked what I had ordered as if no record or communication existed at all. At that point, I asked for a refund. What followed was a frustrating and unnecessary ordeal. The so-called manager came to the window and began explaining how long a sandwich takes to make despite the fact that I did not order a sandwich. The manager clearly did not understand the situation, continued wasting my time, and failed to listen after I had already made it clear that I just wanted a refund since my order was never made. Even processing the refund became a struggle. This is not an isolated incident. On several prior visits, they've been under-supplied, out of basic items, or dealing with non-functioning machines issues that are frankly unacceptable for a business that calls itself a coffee shop. The lack of organization and accountability is astounding. One of our clients regularly purchased gift cards from Coffee Dog for us, but after this experience, I will be telling him not to return. Mr. Hodges, save your money this place is no longer worth it. It's incredibly sad to see how far this business has fallen. I supported Coffee Dog for the longest time, but I am officially done. I will not be returning, and I will not be recommending this place to anyone. Future customers should be aware: this business is not the same under new ownership.
