This place is amazing! It's located in the heart of Bastrop in the downtown area and parking is a little tricky if it busy. When you arrive inside you get a southern homey vibe and are greeted with smiles. I then noticed on the wall that they were known for their breakfast. So I was ecstatic to try it out. When seated I scanned over the menu and decided to try the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast plate. When the food arrived I was shocked! The portions were huge and the biscuit was so soft and delicious and the potatoes were crispy and delectable! The eggs were fluffy and the entire overall experience was phenomenal! That's fine because it allowed us a bit of time to check out downtown Bastrop. Once seated, service was American cafe classic. Very friendly and full of memorabilia on the walls and decore. The evening cleaning crew left us an upside down dead . . . Yup, you guessed it. We told the server, they might want to clean it up before seating the next guest at that table. Went to breakfast with my family that lives close to bastrop. It's a very small place do def get there early. You can tell everything is freshly made my husband got the biscuit and gravy and said they were good. I tried a bit an they were def good. I got the hearty breakfast with French toast eggs, bacon and potatoes. The potatoes were very crispy, bacon was cooked really well and eggs. French toast could use some more flavor but still good. Our girls for the kids French toast which is two pieces. My brother in law had the monte cristo he said it was kinda small and could have used more meat inside not very filling. Service was great, our serve was great she was good with all the kids, she even put up my daughters drawing on there board, which my daughter was super super excited about. I was finally able to get here for breakfast. The place doesn't have air conditioning but it's still cooler inside. Texas heat is no joke. I love that they serve Pepsi in a jar that they use for glasses. I ordered French Toast (suggested by the server) and a breakfast taco (eggs, cheddar and avocado). The French toast was not big at all so I could easily enjoy my taco. The server was friendly. The restaurant has tables only. And the bathroom could definitely use some TLC. Popped in on our drive through the area and so glad that we did! Cute historic downtown area. Very cool vibe and great food! Our party ordered: Chicken fried steak-best they ever had. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage were really good. The praline french toast was on another level of amazing! I haven't had a Monte Cristo since the days of Bennigan's--almost 20 years ago--so my expectations were very high when I saw this much beloved dish on the menu. While this wasn't quite the nostalgic Monte Cristo I remembered, it was definitely good enough to scratch the itch. It even came with that sweet jam dipping sauce that's a must with a Monte Cristo. The sandwich had great flavor and held its own, and the fries were perfectly crispy and crunchy. Great rendition of a classic with a homemade take that still hit all the right notes. read more

Back fairly quick with the GD in tow...and sadly this was nowhere as good as our first visit. Service was definitely lacking, and we were there early...wife went with the Rise and Shine special...luke warm at best, potatoes soft...there crazy crispy and hot last round...burnt the first round of toast and took way to long for the replacement...its toast...My chicken fried steak was really good, tender...over easy eggs were a bit under on the whites....taters a miss a well....The GD went with eggs and a couple of sausage patties...that was pretty good...and we all shared a huge pancake...good flavor but really hard to cut thru...not burnt of anything....we won't write it off just yet...the first time was so good, we can try again....everyone has an off day. read more

this place is packed so there was a long wait after we ordered, but service was friendly. the price is a steal considering how huge the platters are. their catfish and chicken melt were grilled perfectly, and we loved the hushpuppies and sweet potato fries. you can also sub egg whites for free, which went well with their homemade salsa. their jam and pies are on the sweeter side though. also just a heads up that they automatically include credit card service fee in the check. read more

Found ourselves in Bastrop, on an exploration day. Say all the reviews for "Maxine's Cafe" so we headed there. Just so happens to be the day before a big car-show"Hero's and Hot Rods" a local Veterans Day celebration. Although there was a bit of a line at the front door, we were seated fairly quickly. The service here is amazing. We were acknowledged by our server right away, letting us know she'd be right with us. She'd just received two more tables just ahead of us. This allowed us time to check out the menu. Wow! Home style southern cooking just as you'd expect. I ordered "Chicken & Waffles", deep fried chicken breast, atop a fresh waffle. Choice of syrup or gravy (I chose both on the side). The combination was fantastic. Wife chose Half order (1 biscuit cut in half), of Biscuit with sausage gravy. It was quite "amazing". Now I know I use that word a lot, but nothing else comes to mind. Hot fluffy biscuit, smothered with sausage gravy with bits of country sausage sprinkled on top. It was simply "amazing"!!! Bastrop folks are very friendly and naturally kind hearted. My table neighbor commented on my appetite, as I didn't leave much left on my plate. Not for me. Food was bland, and it took a while to get utensils after the food was served. Oatmeal portion was generous but way too soft for my preference. Omelette was ok but it didn't have seasoning or other things to pull the ingredients together. The food was prepared well and service was ok, but I've had better choices at Denny's, Waffle House, or any Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast. It's such a nice atmosphere with a charming small-town feel just outside the city, and we really do love Bastrop. We were excited to try this spot, especially with all the great things we had heard. Unfortunately, our experience didn't quite meet expectations. We were quoted about a 30-minute wait for a table for two, but it ended up being over an hour. We completely understand that wait times can fluctuate, especially when it's busy, but the updates we received were a bit misleading. we made a reservation for 11:30 but did not get sat until around 12. it took 10 minutes after being sat for someone to come and take our drink order. all service was rushed. the restaurant was VERY cramped and it did not feel homey or cozy. there was a roach on the wall and the staff did not notice. the food was alright. it was very greasy and heavy, but i guess you can't expect a healthy meal from a diner. read more

Breakfast was a big disappointment. Maxine's was highly recommended by a local resident. Breakfast was barely edible. It was mostly a server problem. We were at one of the two outside tables in use. 1. We had no silverware when the server brought out food. When we asked for silverware, she snipped "I'm getting to that". 2. The scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast had NO heat - not even lukewarm. (The fried potatoes and fried eggs were fine.) The wait for silverware and unheated plastic plates didn't help. 3. The server never brought any salt and pepper for the eggs. She didn't come back after bringing silverware, so we couldn't request them. The butter was obviously reused - mostly separated into liquid and milk solids. We did find some to use, but questionable butter on cold toast was unappealing. 4. There was a long wait to pick up the bill/credit card. We finally got up to go inside and she came out. The other outside table had a different server, and seemed to get good prompt service. We found this awesome restaurant with Yelp. It is small which emphasizes the 'close-knit community gathering place' atmosphere. But expect a wait. Luckily we arrived at the perfect time and were seated in 15 minutes. The brunch menu offers something for everyone. The staff was attentive and the food was fantastic! My only recommendation is if you order the Famous Fried Green Tomato BLT Sandwich with jalapeño cream cheese, get the cream cheese on the side. The Texas Benny was phenomenal, the eggs were perfectly poached, the spicy hollandaise sauce had a very mild but delicious taste and the potatoes were seasoned perfectly so there was no need for ketchup. What a nice little place, very busy. We were seated after a few minutes waiting for a hostess, who also brings you your drinks and cleans up tables. Our server shows up and we ordered our breakfast. I and my FIL ordered the rise and shine. The bacon was delicious. Biscuits and gravy were delicious. The biscuits are so large and soft. Hubby said that his food was awesome! Downtown Bastrop Maxines is a local fav and treat. Just love this place. They are awesome for breakfast and lunch. Their omelets are spectacular and huge - they never skimp on fresh and lots of ingredients that you select. Willie's plate is a delightful dish with eggs your way, meat and grits or oatmeal plus a side of French toast. Their lunch options are amazing. Recommend starting with a southern fav fried green tomatoes and then enjoy a great southern menu of options. One tiny warning: One griddle pancake is over 12" round ...so order one and you might want to share...but it is so delicious and comes in various flavors you might not want to. Our first time coming was a quiet Tuesday Morning at around 9:30am. Bailey helped us out and she was terrific! She was even so kind to walk my daughter to the restroom. I can't thank everyone here enough for such hospitality and perfect service. It was a peaceful atmosphere too!! We were in Paige for the Viking Festival and I wanted breakfast before driving home.  Plus it's fun to check out new places!  Did my scouring of reviews of a few places in downtown Paige and ended up choosing this spot. We arrived around 10:00 AM on a Sunday.  This place was packed with a line outside.  Fortunately for us, they had outdoor heaters running and there was a fella picking his guitar and singing to entertain us while we waited.  Got to check out the historic marker on the building as well during this time.  Once inside it felt like a hometown diner for sure.  Stuff all over the walls, waitstaff moving back and forth with refill coffee pot in hand, and buzz of many conversations happening all around you.  So if you're looking for a quiet spot to sip your coffee, this ain't it!  But that's not why we were there so it didn't bother me at all.  The noise level was pretty good for being so crowded actually - we could still have a conversation without yelling at each other. The waitress we had was sweet as pie.  She was mature in life and when we asked if it was always this busy, she replied "Oh hon, I only work weekends!".  Smart woman - that's where the bank tips are I'm sure!!  We proceeded to order and she looked shocked as I ordered what felt like enough food to feed a family of four and my husband got an English muffin. LOL!  But you know - I wanted to try several things, what can I say!   I ended up getting Willie's Hearty Breakfast (11.00) : A Griddle Cake or French Toast served with 2 eggs, any style, your choice of bacon, sausage patty, or ham steak & your choice of home fried potatoes, oatmeal or grits.  I went with the blueberry cake, bacon, over easy eggs, and grits with added cheddar cheese.  I also added in a half order of biscuits and sausage gravy.  There was hardly any room on our table for two when it all arrived!  This was a solid well done breakfast!  The bacon was thick cut and cooked perfectly.  The grits were just good old southern grits, but when I added the bacon and cheddar - droooool.  Eggs were done just right and the cake was huge, bouncy, and yummy as well.  That biscuit gave my grams a run for her money - so fluffy and soft.  The gravy was good too, but could have used more sausage and for it to be more crumbled and spread evenly throughout.  There was really just a big chunk.  But the flavor was spot on for this Southern classic.  Needless to say to go containers were taken and lunch on the road later was just as satisfying as the first round.   I can see why it's so popular.  Solid service, good breakfast options, and located in the heart of historic downtown. read more

Off to a very slow start. One sweet waitress brought us water after close to ten minutes after being seated and said our server would be with us shortly. After another five minutes the hostess was very curt when asked about our server. We had to ask again and she was even nastier. But then Bailey saved the day. We were approaching 30 minutes at this time. She swooped in with a beautiful smile and great attitude. There apparently was some type of crisis with our server. Anyway Bailey saved the day and turned our zero star visit around. If we had started with her, it would be a 5 star review. After several recommendations from neighbors and locals, we decided to try Maxine's after church and weren't disappointed. My daughter and I arrived around 11:15 am after attending early church service. When we checked in we were told the wait would be about 25 minutes. We waited outside where there were tables and chairs. It was early and still pleasant enough out, so the wait wasn't bad. About a half hour later we were called and seated at a table where another party of 2 were seated on the opposite end. The table was large with plenty of space between parties and the folks were pleasant so we had no problem sharing the table. It was nice to have friendly exchange with strangers in these polarizing times! The food was enormously fantastic in every sense! I ordered an iced coffee with caramel flavor and Willie's Hearty Breakfast which included a whopper of a pancake, choice of meat (I chose sausage), eggs (perfectly soft scrambled) and potatoes or grits. My daughter had the chicken and waffle -- the tender breast fillet was perfectly crispy and tasty. She said her sweet tea was the best she's had.
