The short of it: I initially went to Leslie who didn't do what I wanted and then sorta made it worse by not being entirely truthful. I called the salon two days later and was offered a fix free of cost. Enter Stacie - the best colorist ever! Fixed my color even better than I could have imagined, and then enter Evan: gave me an awesome haircut and blow-out post color! Love, love, love this place! Awesome customer service, great colorists and stylists. My new go-to place for sure.
The long version: I have long dark Indian hair and don't harbor any illusions about what my hair can and cannot do. Add to this, I put henna in my hair for over a year (but 6 months before I came in for color). I was paired with Leslie who told me quite clearly that the Balayage/Ombre effect I was going for was going to be near impossible and that I would probably need to dedicate myself to doing this over many times. I was OK with that. She was quite pleasant to work with, she did her thing with the lightener and I was sent off to shampoo. I hadn't needed a blowout that day so I was sent to the self blow dry station to do it myself. As I did it I noticed that my hair seemed patchy orangey in places. I saw leslie when I dried most of it and she denied any patchiness in the back (where I couldn't really see it properly) and felt that there was no need for any toning. I trusted this, vowed to come back in a few weeks and left kind of upset with the truly, truly minimal change. I felt like I couldn't say anything because of what she had said about perhaps nothing happening on my hair. Once I got home and started straightening my hair, I noticed that my haircolor had indeed lifted, but in random haphazard places and was bright orange where it lifted. I had even asked her if it was patchy and she had denied this and felt that it didn't need to be toned down either. She also distinctly told me that she didn't think that my ends would lighten at all.
I have previously had blond highlights all over my jet black hennaed hair - and my colorist in NYC was able to get this in one shot, so to prove to myself, I bleached my ends for 25 minutes and lo and behold, my ends had significantly lightened. Feeling cheated, I called Maxine's (I have only ever called with a complaint once before in my entire lifetime!) and spoke with someone named Tracey who was amazingly nice and was exemplary in her customer service. She rescheduled me for an appointment with Stacie - who was phenomenal! She explained everything patiently. After lifting the color from my hair, she toned it, and the color is AMAZING! Totally the look I wanted and has that ombre effect! I followed up this awesome color experience with Evan who was sweet as ever and who gave me an awesome haircut (perfect layers!) and blowout.
I know this is a long review, but you want to make the best decision you can regarding your hair. You may not always get someone who can give you what you want right away, but they should be truthful and minimally, you should certainly be offered a fix, especially with the prices you pay. Maxine is a place that delivers on its promise. read more
