Ben has always done a great job, I felt special, and he made me feel like a billion bucks. For Years. The other day though... was priceless. Seriously. I was in a car accident in March. I have missing teeth, I have a brain injury, stitches on my face... I'm still sick and have not felt like myself, at all. Salons were closed at the time and I was too ashamed to ask anyone to help me wash my hair and help me take a bath. No one wants that or could help. Hard to keep up with your hair with all that going on. I was blonde/partial blonde for 4 years. Ben helped me achieve my natural color again in one session so I could afford it and the maintenance again. I combed through countless instagrams, yelp reviews, facebooks, google reviews to find a studio with the best talent and one that wouldn't break your budget. When I moved to West Loop in May, I was looking for a friendly, affordable, welcoming salon like the one I had gone to for years in Lincoln Park. Withlove is exactly what I was hoping to find. The ambiance is warm and inviting. I love the cute little bar where I can get a glass of wine to enjoy during my appointment. I especially love going to Isamar, who gives me the exact haircut l'm looking for every time. She's so funny, kind & asks the right questions to ensure she understands the look l'm after. I visited Hair Loft for the first time a few months ago, looking for a new hairdresser nearby. Saw the great reviews and just had to give it a try! I got a hair cut and color, unfortunately both were disastrous. Perhaps they are not great for Asian hair. 1. Terrible cut - not sure if my mistake here is scheduling with the only available stylist, the least experienced. But given that this is a reputable, high end shop, I just assumed that even a less experienced person would be trained well and/or there will be someone to oversee/train. There wasn't. The result is the most uneven cut I've ever had in my life. All I needed was a trim, but instead I got a straight lop on one chunk of hair on the left side and a another lop on another chunk at a different length on the right. The back looked even worse! 2. Disappointing coloring - I have naturally black hair and regularly color my hair (brown). I came to get a similar color, and after more than an hour, my hair was only slightly less black. I mentioned that it doesn't look like the color took, my stylist said "no, it's lighter when it's dry, it's a different color." It wasn't. 3. The inexperienced stylist - while she was blow drying my hair, I definitely got whacked in the head by the blow dryer at least 2-3 times. And I don't think she even noticed. This should never happen in any salon. 4. The product - I was "sold" on a color maintenance shampoo before my cut was even completed. Since the color didn't even take very well, this obviously was not needed. 5. The service - I called back and asked to get the cut fixed, and they were very apologetic and very accommodating. They scheduled me in with a top-ranked stylist (albeit only for 15 min). He was very nice and understanding. He fixed my cut on the two lop-sided chunks I mentioned in less than 10 min, it was great. But, he only did specifically what I showed him as examples and he never went through the make sure the rest of my hair (in the back!!!) was okay. He also didn't respond to my inquiry about my hair coloring because "he needs to check what treatment," although he never did. He was fully booked and simply too busy, and he's not getting paid for this, so I get it. All in all, I was hoping to look amazing for my Spain trip but ended up looking like I styled my hair myself. I was super embarrassed when I had to go back to my normal stylist to have her re-do everything. Honestly, super disappointed. read more

Today was my second visit with Christian at the West Loop location. I've been meaning to review since my first visit. Better late than never. Christian is an extremely well-respected educator and stylist within the beauty industry, and he consistently provides the best haircuts I have ever had. How did we get so lucky as to have talent like this in Chicago? How did I get so lucky as to have this salon within walking distance from my home?! What I love about my visits with him is that I can put together a Pinterest board of the general feel that I'm going for, and he'll nail it. When I first moved to Chicago, I drew a picture of the haircut I wanted on a napkin, and I GOT EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. His consultations are thorough, and his work is customized to your needs/limitations. He's known for being a haircutter, but don't make the mistake of seeing someone else for color. I've really enjoyed previous visits with him (also at the River North location) for hair color, and both visits have been dramatic changes. I'm a beauty industry professional as well, but I always leave having learned something new from Christian. He makes sure you know what he's doing, why he's doing it, what products/tools he's using and how to use them. Today, I learned an awesome new trick with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shaping Cream that I never would have considered before with my hair. I had a great experience here! Starting right from when I made my appointment. I messaged them on yelp and the manager responded to me within minutes (even though it was after hours) and told me the easiest way to make an appointment (which was online) and suggested a hair stylist to me based off of what I said I wanted! I used their online site to make an account and schedule an appointment, which was very easy to navigate and such a great idea since I could see all the possible available times on one screen without the hassle of having someone list a million times to me over the phone! When I got there I was very impressed. The studio is very modern, trendy, clean and spacious! Christian came and got me immediately, I barely had to wait! He asked me what I wanted done with my hair and he did exactly that! I LOVED this place! I have moved a couple times in recent years and have tried lots of different salons and stylists. This was far and above my best experience. I cannot say enough good things about this place and especially about Bree! She was fantastic. I will 100% be back. Bree was so patient and easy to talk to. She listened to my concerns and accomplished exactly what I wanted. I have long hair and have had previous stylists cut way more off than I ask because the stylist (not me) thinks it needs to go. Bree was the polar opposite of this. She cut a little bit, let me see it, and then asked if I was comfortable with cutting more off. She took it very slowly, and I greatly appreciated it. She gave me new tips for how to deal with problem areas. I loved her! Added bonus: they will inform you about the products they are selling and the benefits but will NOT pressure you to buy any. This was particularly refreshing. They were also very forgiving of my being late after I drove around for quite a bit of time trying to find parking. I've always been relatively low maintenance when it came to my hair, but decided that it was time for a change. I came to see Kayla to get my hair highlighted for the first time in my life. Kayla has cut my hair a few times, so I knew that I could be as blunt as necessary to make sure that I wasn't leading myself into a first-time highlight disaster. I bombarded Kayla with pictures and ideas of what I thought I wanted, but also solicited her input as to what she thought would look best. She was very understanding and patient with me, knowing that because I had never colored my hair before, I didn't know what questions to ask or what specifications I should articulate. She clarified everything, asked me all the right questions, and communicated with me throughout the whole process. Most importantly, when I showed her pictures of what I liked, she asked me specifically what I liked about it, and what I saw that made me want to use that particular picture as an example (acknowledging that sometimes stylists and clients can look at the same picture and see very different things). Somehow, throughout my rambling and panicked explanations, she nailed exactly what I was trying to achieve. Perfect amount of light and warmth, but still maintaining my brunette color. At 26 years old, my friends have long-found their trusted stylist to handle their highlights or coloring without any fear or timidness. There's something comforting in knowing that I've found mine. I'm not the type to leave reviews, even if I feel service was bad but since this particular stylist has very little reviews I felt I should warn others. I booked with Isamar because I'm actually very broke and $70 was the best I could find in the area. The reviews on here are great for every other stylist, so I assumed I'd be getting a top grade stylist regardless of who I went to. That being said, Isamar was very nice and not very talkative (which I personally prefer in a stylist), so I initially was very excited and hopeful that she knew what she was doing. My hair fluctuates between wavy and curly depending on how long it is and how long its been since I had a haircut, so I asked her to just generally give me a cut that will bring out my curls by cutting off the dead weight. At least on that she delivered. The problem was that I wanted some face framing pieces/curtain bangs. I showed her pictures for reference and then she started cutting and I trusted her to know what she was doing. I have this one piece of hair in my bangs section that is very stubborn and never wants to curl like the rest of it. I was unphased by it, but I did notice that the very inside pieces of my bangs were a tad too long since they were below my eyebrows at about my eye level. So she cut them to make them shorter....but WHY would you cut them so short. These pieces are now at about half my forehead and don't even blend into the rest of the curtain bangs. Especially since my hair is curly, they look absolutely awful. I honestly have never felt my self esteem plummet as low as it did in that moment after she cut it and we both knew she messed up. So now I have a choppy mess of curtain bangs that probably can't even be fixed until it grows out. I don't think she's worth $70 quite yet. Also she didn't even bother to dry my hair all the way and let me walk out with crunchy damp curls. It was embarrassing. I'm sure the other stylists there are great, but I'd stay away from Isamar. At least until she's maybe had more training. If I wanted to be a guinea pig, I would get my hair done at a beauty school for much cheaper. read more

As a person with anxiety and a hard schedule to work with, Kylie went above and beyond her call of duty as my stylist - Multiple consultations, hours hand weaving hair -She took the time to thoughtfully plan her every move to take horrible, hair that had been lost due to stress, pregnancy and alopecia. I have truly never felt more at home and comfortable or felt that someone worked as hard and as diligently on anything esthetically for me. She gave me a true transformation that was worth every penny and beyond. Kylie is a great colorist/ stylist - she has spent her own time & money to progress her studies in beauty culture and you can see her passion through and through. I moved to the West Loop over a year ago and continued to use my stylist back in the suburbs. It was definitely time to choose a hair salon close to my new apartment, so through a quick search on Yelp, I decided to take a chance with The Hair Loft since both locations had such great reviews. I made an appointment online (super easy process) and choose "any provider" under the stylist option since I was not familiar with the staff there. Upon arrival, the staff was friendly and attentive, the salon looked practically brand new, and the overall vibe was very laid-back. I ended up with Christian as my hair stylist that morning. He asked me exactly what I wanted, explained everything he was going to do, and made sure we were both on the same page (LOVED that).
