I spent a good portion of my young years in Connecticut and the one thing I truly miss is the pizza and calzones that come from this weird area of central Connecticut (Yeah, I'm not talking about New Haven style, I want this greasy mildly thick stuff). My plane landed at around 5:30AM on Saturday and I made sure that six hours later I was on my way to Max's Pizza to pick up a calzone and a cheese pizza to go in on (didn't eat both for lunch, but needed both in the house). My calzone was stuffed with mozzarella cheese, sausage, and meatball and my small pizza was simply cheese. The calzone was everything I could of hoped for, the dough was soft but also a little crispy at the same time. The sausage and meatball inside was delicious and cooked to perfection. The mozzarella cheese was ooey and gooey and what else can a man truly want out of calzone cheese? And finally, that red sauce was packing a flavourful punch that had me cleaning my plate when I was done. I won't lie, I did tear into at least one fresh piece of the cheese pizza and I absolutely loved it. Overall, Max's Pizza might just be my favourite pizza place, period. I've eaten pizza pretty much everywhere from New Haven, Chicago, and Las Vegas to Rome, Sicily, and Toronto and there's something about this central Connecticut stuff that is my ultimate weakness. Glad to see Max Pizza grow thru the years just as the residents in Bristol has grown with them. Seeing it expand into the former jewelry store next door to include dining area and a back porch too. We grabbed a clam casino pizza, veggie lovers and Hawaiian for the group of us. The pizza were cut into squares which is always a nice way to share a pie. Full of flavor and toppings you'll always get a nice bite of everything on the slice/square with the hot bite burning the roof of your mouth if you aren't too careful. All in all Max pizza has been a local favorite that isn't going away anytime soon. They have a monopoly with their giant cardboard coupons for free pizzas eventually but they know you'll be back. read more

I have been getting pizza from Max's since I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. I have no idea how the family came upon such perfect recipes and pizza as they have. But it makes for a place where you not only are valued as a life long customer you bring your kids there introducing another generation to their amazing food. What are they serving? Classic comfort food you'd expect to find in any pizza place but with family recipes for meatballs, sauce etc etc. That makes a huge difference. A pepperoni with meatball and mushrooms is to die for and even the shrooms must be seasoned to taste so good. Their meatballs have been a staple for me when it comes to deciding where I'm going to eat out. The staff has been there for a long time, new additions are obviously taught the customer is number one and I can honestly say I don't recall one incident of sending food back. One time I even dropped the pizza on the way out, kinda flat on the floor but in the box with how hit is was the cheese went nuts. The owner said "No it's no problem, you wait here I'll make you another". They're so good to you I was like no I have to pay because that was my own fault. He laughed and said "you come here all the time, I'm making a new one for you". I haven't tried the nachos since they put it in the menu but I hear they're damned good for a pizza place and my buddy was impressed which isn't easy as he cooks like a madman. My husband is suuuuper picky about his pizza and compares every pie to that of his favorite neighborhood pizza shop next to his home where he grew up - and he agrees that Max is on par with the best of the best! We feel so lucky to have this just down the street from us. The pizza is the best and the prices are fair. We also tried mozzarella sticks here and they were delicious too. I've always loved Max 1 (Stafford Ave. in Bristol) pizza since I was a kid. Its been awhile since I've gotten pizza from them because, here in Forestville/East Bristol Oasis was our go to for Greek pizza. Now that Oasis has changed ownership and become The Bell City Diner, they no longer make pizza so we decided to go to our old favorite Max. Called in my take out order and was told 20-25 minutes...perfect. Got to Max's to pick up and was short 10 cents.....a dime! Of course I have a dime in the car, but the woman behind the counter said "Don't worry about it." I asked if she was sure and she waved me off with a smile. Some of you may think "yeah....so what?" Or " I dont see what the big deal is to this story/review." The thing is, in my experience, no one does this anymore. Sure maybe for a couple pennies, but a dime seems too much for most businesses to let go. Maxs Pizza did just that, let it go. I guess the point to my review here is that the woman at Maxs pizza restored my faith a bit that there is kindness in this world, no matter how little, its still there. This is NOT regarding the Stafford Ave location I went to the new Max for on Middle Street tonight with a party of 10. server was fantastic however pizzas took 55 minutes to get to the table. And we had two toddlers with us and they wanted us to put pizzas in front of the toddler's because there wasn't enough space on the tables and refused to give us additional space. cats are pizzas on top of the high chairs and had to hold the toddlers while we tried to eat the food that came out cold and burnt. read more

I went to Max Pizza the other night with my family for my father in law's birthday. It was A Friday night, and very busy- which I thought was a good sign. But I was wrong. Our waitress seemed very overwhelmed throughout our dinner, and was slow to help. My partner's french onion soup tasted like "dish water", according to him. I agree it needed a lot more seasoning. That was disappointing because it looked yummy upon first glance. We also got tacos. Yes, this pizza restaurant has tacos. Yes, they taste just as odd as you'd think a pizza shop's tacos would taste- down to the use of mozzarella cheese! I would compare them to school cafeteria tacos- edible but not delicious by any means. I shouldn't have expected much of them anyways. Now, when the pizza came out, it was barely cut! We were ripping piping hot slices apart and cheese and sauce was sliding everywhere! As for the good parts of the experience, our waitress changed the channel to the Red Sox game at our request (even if she made it seem like it was the biggest chore ever), and the boys loved the Pac Man arcade machine. I would probably get Max's again but as take out. It was so busy in there, the waitresses couldn't possibly be as attentive as they needed to be. The lighting was really bright- like supermarket bright, and it was just loud and busy. This is a small town pizza place that serves average food for average prices. The pizza is Greek style and doesn't stand out. However, it doesn't severely disappoint either. If you're unsure on size, I'd say a small is leaning towards a personal size and a medium is plenty for two people or even three. We tried Jalapeno poppers, which were of the standard frozen variety. My wife digs the Chefs salad, but let's be honest, it's iceburg lettuce, deli meat and cheese. Take out service was friendly and quick. There was only 1 waiter, whom after speaking to only was working there for a few weeks. He was on top of every table and one of the most friendly and personable people that has ever served me. For being new, he totally exceeded my expectations. Everyone in the back was on their toes and the food came out quick and hot. The onion rings were perfect and the pizza was delicious and exactly what I remembered growing up. This place will definitely be on my rotational list of local pizza places! Completely baffled by how this could be conisdered good pizza by anyone who has a rudimentary understanding of the art... Greek-style pizza is hard to get right, especially with that thicker crust. Ideally, it should be soft, buttery, a little crisp on the outside. Not tough, chewy, and Domino's-esque, for lack of a better adjective. So yeah, Max Pizza reminds me of Domino's, and that's anything but a compliment. In fact I'd probably prefer a Domino's pizza... at least it would be cheaper. I should also mention that I'd probably never think to sit down to eat here... it's very, very old inside, and not in a dank dive bar sorta way. Consider take-out orders only if you plan to try their pizza. It's not inedible, it's just not particularly good pizza. Some of the best pizza in Bristol, with their buffalo chicken in particular being my favorite - a great blue cheese flavor with pieces of real (unlike other pieces of chicken I've seen on pizzas before) grilled chicken covered in buffalo sauce. This is the type of place most of us who grew up in suburban towns in New England remember from when we were kids. A family kind of place where you can relax and hang out and share a big pie or call ahead and pick up your order. They're pretty popular in both aspects, and that's why the place is still here, doing it the same way as when we were kids. Their pizza sauce is sweet, and its better to get a large because you get a better crust, and they have Long Trail on draft which is a nice near-craft beer selection. My mom grew up in the neighborhood behind the shop and the owners have treated my family pretty well for about 40 years or so. Extra star for great hospitality.
