They use Slice for delivery. We ordered, received messages from slice that order is delayed. Called pizza shop and they didn't get the order. I paid $70 to slice and can't get through to them. As far as I'm concerned It's a BS process and someone took my cash. read more

I am a return customer of this establishment, and this past Saturday I experienced some of the most dehumanizing treatment I've ever encountered while simply trying to pick up my order. I was given a wait time of 35 minutes, which I respected. I arrived on time, walked in, and approached the counter expecting a normal pickup. What followed was anything but normal. There were three men clearly running the operation. One appeared to be the head cook, while the other two--dressed in plain clothes--were assisting with orders. One thing that immediately stood out was the head cook wearing black rubber gloves while touching everything--door handles, the phone, the computer screen--without ever removing or sanitizing them, then continuing to handle food. That alone raised concerns about cleanliness. I stood at the register for about five minutes and was completely ignored. Not one acknowledgment. For context, the restaurant is very small, and I am a 6'4 man--it is impossible to miss me. Directly behind the register is a bread rack, and one of the men--the shortest of the three--kept coming within arm's reach of me, repeatedly ignoring my presence. I could have physically touched him, that's how close we were, yet I was treated as if I didn't exist. After being ignored, I sat at a nearby high-top table. The three men continued preparing orders without acknowledging me. A DoorDash order was called, and someone came in and was helped once their name was called. Shortly after, another man walked in and was immediately asked for his order name ahead of me. At this point, I had already waited about 15 minutes past the promised pickup time and watched multiple people be acknowledged before me. I stood up, went back to the register, and firmly stated my order name. I received a few looks but no real action. While this was happening, another customer came in saying he received the wrong pizza. I asked if it might be mine. I was told no, and the box was quickly moved out of sight. When the shorter man returned, the head cook tried to speak to him about my order, but they were speaking in their native language. I then saw the short man put his hand up toward me in a dismissive way, as if to say I could wait. Without even looking at me, he raised his voice and asked if I placed my order online or over the phone. I had to confirm he was speaking to me. After I answered, he disappeared briefly and came back with what looked like the same pizza box that had just been moved. Suddenly, his demeanor changed. He became overly friendly--calling me "bro" and acting like nothing happened. I responded with silence. I was honestly too stunned to speak. Before leaving, I checked my order to make sure everything was correct. As I got into my car, the same man ran after me with a 2-liter Coca-Cola, saying he could "see it in my face" and offering it as a gesture. That's when I spoke up. I told him how unacceptable and disrespectful his behavior was and reminded him I had just spent over $60 at his business. He admitted I was right and started offering me "anything I want." He brought out a slice of strawberry cheesecake, which turned into two slices and repeated apologies. But the damage was already done. I made it clear this wasn't about free food. It was about how I was treated--as a paying customer and as a person. I reminded him that his business depends on people like me, and that behavior like that is unacceptable. I do not give him credit for trying to fix it afterward. It felt reactive and weak compared to the disrespect I experienced. However, I am glad I spoke up and made sure he understood how badly he handled the situation. I share this because I walked away feeling hurt, dehumanized, and racially targeted. That is a lot to feel over picking up pizza. No one should ever be made to feel invisible or disrespected like that. So I'll say this for myself and anyone else who has experienced something similar: F*CK that. Do not let anyone feel that comfortable disrespecting you. Sometimes you have to stand your ground and make it clear--you do not have permission to treat me however you want. read more

Ordered Italian parm wings. Described as "cutlet style". I have never had a cutlet, chicken or otherwise, with bones in them. Was excited for chicken parm but got soggy Buffalo wings drenched in cheese and sauce. Threw them away. The lobster shrimp rigatoni was good. A little strange as they gave you ravioli and rigatoni, which is pasta with pasta. And there were only2 shrimp. Vodka sauce was good though. read more

This review is based on two grinders I've had here recently, so I can't speak for the pizza. First off, the size of the grinders are GIGANTIC - I couldn't even finish half of the first one, which was the Milano. This grinder was SO good - the chicken and eggplant were nicely crispy and the balsamic glaze added a nice sweetness. The second grinder I ordered a couple of weeks later was the Tuna Fish. I forgot to take a picture, but the portion of the tuna was more than generous and the vinegar added a nice touch. Flawless experience. The food is amazing! I wanted to try out the grinders because I always loved them at pizza shops. Inside is small and is mostly set up for take out. But the service was great! They were quick and let us know how much longer we had to wait. They gave extra sauces as well. The food was the best part though. I would recommend a calzone and Philly cheese steak for sure. 3.50 stars. Basically, 4 stars for the pastas, 3 stars for the pizzas, and probably 3.5 stars for the price. No matter what you order at Turnpike, it's going to be a generous sized portion. This is especially notable in some of their pasta orders like their veal piccata or chicken scarpiello. Both orders were absolutely massive and lasted me a couple of days. The pizzas have also lasted a few days but alas for a different reason. I love the level of customization for the pizzas. There are so many flavor combinations that other places would be afraid to try. For example, fresh lemon is served on the side for their shrimp scampi pizza. But the pizza itself just isn't my favorite. I guess I like my thin pizzas crispy and what I've found is the pizzas here tend to have a more chewy consistency. Overall, however, Turnpike is worth exploring. I'll probably try one of their glorious grinders on a subsequent visit. read more

So whatever you may have previously thought of or heard about Turnpike Pizzeria, it's time for a fresh look. As of a few weeks ago, they have new leadership, new food talent and a new menu. I didn't connect with Turnpike when they first opened in Newington and I hadn't been in years, but the recent changes had me curious. I visited this week for lunch takeout, and I'm glad I did. I don't remember having a strong positive opinion of the atmosphere when I last visited under the previous management, but I immediately felt welcome when I walked in this week. They had cool music playing. I was warmly greeted, and the crew took the time to tell me about their new direction and their background. (They share some DNA with Pietro's in Hartford) They also gave me a better view of certain things for my pictures. You don't get much better service for takeout. Turnpike has one long table that could seat about 6 people, but it is more of a takeout or delivery place. They have a counter area with heated slices such as cheese, pepperoni, BBQ chicken and Buffalo chicken. You can order whole pizzas, sandwiches, apps, pasta dishes and entrees. The new entree menu has good looking options. I ordered Chicken Tortellini in Vodka Sauce, and it came with a Garlic Knot and salad. The food was all good. The vodka sauce and marinara that came with the garlic knot were both well executed and tasty. The grilled chicken was cut into long thin strips, and it had good texture and was juicy. The cheese tortellini were good. And the dish was well put together. The garlic knot was more like a garlic fist. It was huge, pillowy and garlic-buttery. Even the salad was a step or two up from what you expect. More vegetables. High quality ingredients. The creamy Italian dressing was good. With one very good experience under this new team, I'm putting Turnpike Pizzeria into my area takeout plans. I've heard so many great things about Turnpike Pizza so I decided to try them out. Turnpike Pizza is basically a take out pizza place but they do have a couple of seats in the establishment. As I walked in the establishment, it was very busy as there were many orders coming in for take out orders. I ordered a small pizza with half Pepperoni and I waited about twenty minutes. As soon as I got my pizza, I opened it up and took my first bite. The pizza was crispy but the sauce was messing some flavor. It had the right amount of cheese and the pepperoni was good but overall it was just missing flavor. read more

Turnpike Pizza is surprisingly our new go-to place for pizza. I was originally skeptical but these people are the real deal. The fire-kissed caprese delight pizza (Hot Honey, Hot Oil, Fresh Tomatoes, Fresh Basil, Fresh Mozzarella, Balsamic) is our favorite, and I don't usually go for "specialty" pizzas. The calzone followed the rule of "if you can't cook, just load it up with garlic"! It was stuffed to the hilt with garlic and mozzarella, very little ricotta. Our first time trying this place out. When you walk in the first impression is clean and welcoming. Music is blasting(which I love) and you get greeted by the staff. If you order ahead your order will be ready on the shelf next to the register which makes for easy pick up. We got the chicken, bacon, ranch which was pretty good. We did find some bones from the chicken on the pizza but not a big deal, couldve been some more sauce and chicken but flavor was good and the crust was amazing. Plain cheese pizza was great. Great cover of cheese and not to much sauce just perfect for a plain cheese pizza. Mozzarella sticks were good. The chicken parmigiana dinner was fantastic! The sauce is really phenomenal. The side salad wasn't your basic salad that comes with dinners. It had chopped up green peppers, tomatoes and onions. Often times I find myself and family to want both wings and pizza. All of the other places I've tried the wings are far from great, and you can tell they are using cheap product. The new & improved Turnpike Pizza lives up to the hype! The pizza is honestly perfect. It's NY style, with a rustic Italian vibe - soft, and slightly crispy around the edges. I tried a sample of their focaccia & noticed some similarities to the pizza dough. My theory is that their chef comes from a background in baking (they also make their own grinder rolls). For me, they have claimed the coveted "best pizza in Newington" crown. My only concern is that their menu is so incredibly expansive, I'm not sure how they will manage that much inventory while still achieving speed, quality, profit, etc. I'm not sure if they really need the bowls & wraps, given everything else available.
