    Milano Grinder
    Melissa T.

This review is based on two grinders I've had here recently, so I can't speak for the pizza. First off, the size of the grinders are GIGANTIC - I couldn't even finish half of the first one, which was the Milano. This grinder was SO good - the chicken and eggplant were nicely crispy and the balsamic glaze added a nice sweetness. The second grinder I ordered a couple of weeks later was the Tuna Fish. I forgot to take a picture, but the portion of the tuna was more than generous and the vinegar added a nice touch. I was honestly impressed with how good the sandwiches were that I already plan on ordering again!

I Called in an order over the phone on a busy Saturday night. Staff was friendly and polite. We ordered a large napoleon pizza. It was delicious. After taxes and fees it came to about 30$. Pizza was yummy and I would order here again.

Flawless experience. The food is amazing! I wanted to try out the grinders because I always loved them at pizza shops. Inside is small and is mostly set up for take out. But the service was great! They were quick and let us know how much longer we had to wait. They gave extra sauces as well. The food was the best part though. I would recommend a calzone and Philly cheese steak for sure. Everything was hot and crispy and made to order and I will definitely be making another trip here!

So whatever you may have previously thought of or heard about Turnpike Pizzeria, it's time for a fresh look. As of a few weeks ago, they have new leadership, new food talent and a new menu. I didn't connect with Turnpike when they first opened in Newington and I hadn't been in years, but the recent changes had me curious. I visited this week for lunch takeout, and I'm glad I did. I don't remember having a strong positive opinion of the atmosphere when I last visited under the previous management, but I immediately felt welcome when I walked in this week. They had cool music playing. I was warmly greeted, and the crew took the time to tell me about their new direction and their background. (They share some DNA with Pietro's in Hartford) They also gave me a better view of certain things for my pictures. You don't get much better service for takeout. Turnpike has one long table that could seat about 6 people, but it is more of a takeout or delivery place. They have a counter area with heated slices such as cheese, pepperoni, BBQ chicken and Buffalo chicken. You can order whole pizzas, sandwiches, apps, pasta dishes and entrees. The new entree menu has good looking options. I ordered Chicken Tortellini in Vodka Sauce, and it came with a Garlic Knot and salad. The food was all good. The vodka sauce and marinara that came with the garlic knot were both well executed and tasty. The grilled chicken was cut into long thin strips, and it had good texture and was juicy. The cheese tortellini were good. And the dish was well put together. The garlic knot was more like a garlic fist. It was huge, pillowy and garlic-buttery. Even the salad was a step or two up from what you expect. More vegetables. High quality ingredients. The creamy Italian dressing was good. With one very good experience under this new team, I'm putting Turnpike Pizzeria into my area takeout plans. I encourage people in Newington and neighboring towns to try it. 4.5 Stars based solely on my recent experience with the new team.

I've heard so many great things about Turnpike Pizza so I decided to try them out. Turnpike Pizza is basically a take out pizza place but they do have a couple of seats in the establishment. As I walked in the establishment, it was very busy as there were many orders coming in for take out orders. I ordered a small pizza with half Pepperoni and I waited about twenty minutes. As soon as I got my pizza, I opened it up and took my first bite. The pizza was crispy but the sauce was messing some flavor. It had the right amount of cheese and the pepperoni was good but overall it was just missing flavor.

Been dying for a pizza with salad on top... used to get one in South Carolina of all places and this was perfect! Balsamic was the best part!

Was looking to grab a Greek salad, and Turnpike Pizza's Greek Salad Pizza came up as an option. OMG this is amazing. New favorite

So, so, SO many great things to say about Turnpike Pizza. The owners are amazing, and always serving some traditional and innovative Italian food with a smile. Noting that they serve both traditional and new creations is important, because if you're looking to try something new, I'm sure they have it. Their menu is wide - inclusive of salads, sandwiches, pizza of course, pasta, pierogies, nachos and don't even get me started on the desserts whatever you are craving, they are able to satisfy. So happy that Turnpike pizza is a staple in our neighborhood

Recommended to try Turnpike Pizza on my recent visit to Hartford to see my college student. It is a very welcoming place and the customer service we received was top-notch, 10 stars! I ordered their famous garlic knots, which did not disappoint. Fresh out the oven and large in size. You taste the Love! Oh, and the amazing homemade marinara sauce, I could eat all day. Just the right ingredients and nothing overbearingly strong. Kudos to Turnpike Pizza! I will be back!

My husband ordered a small (12in) cheese pizza, and I decided to go with a small (12in) vodka pizza. I love vodka sauce but had never tried it on a pie before, man was it delicious!- Chef's kiss! My husband really enjoyed his traditional cheese pizza as well! It was great to find a new haven style pizza joint further into the state. They also serve Detroit style pizza which I'd be interested in trying next time. The only downside was not having room to try the italian ricotta donuts that look and sound amazing (which JG doesn't start serving till 5pm). I guess that means we'll just have to go back! 10 out of 10 for JG, we shall return!

We had the Chicken Joey which was so flavorful. The risotto was outstanding, so creamy and delicious. And the broccoli was tasty, covered in chopped garlic. We also had their new promotion of chicken cutlet meals - Brooklyn chicken which was a mild impression of Parmesan, but less sauce, and fresh mozzarella on top. And, a very strong taste of garlic, to be expected. The atmosphere is pleasant and we had a friendly and attentive wait staff.

We ordered the triple appetizer, and the kitchen gave us chicken tenders instead of the arancini that we ordered, so they gave it to us on the house. The servers were attentive and kind, and quick to fix our order. - Arancini, (4.25/5): I've never cared for Arancini but this changed my mind- the ball was perfectly cwisp and fried, with a not toooo mushy cheesy center - Calamari, (4.5/5): so good! I love lemon on mine, and it came with this addictive sour spicy mayo dip- top notch sauce - Meatballs, (4/5): tasted pretty standard- not too dry and very beefy with acidic tomato to cut through the meat - Chicken tenders, (4.5/5): surprisingly very good - very juicy with crackly batter and had a great dipping sauce - Small Calabrese Apizza, (5/5): wow! this pizza is sooo light and airy. I am not a big crust person, but I ate the whole slice. the dough is so chewy, the pizza itself was flavorful and light. the waiter recommended us to get a small since we got appetizers... but tbh the 2 of us could've tackled a bigger pie as certified big backs Very happy to have tried Sally's!

I wanted to give them a second chance. Sometimes businesses have bad days and I don't like to judge based off of one experience unless it's super bad. Well, this time was worse. Ordered the chopped salad. All you could taste was dressing and it was soggy and swimming. Barely any meat. Then the pizza came. One half had pepperoni and hot honey and the other had meatball and ricotta. The pepperoni side was literally disgusting. Like the salad, it was completely drenched in hot honey and sickly sweet. It was pooling on my plate. You couldn't taste the sauce, cheese, and toppings. Speaking of the sauce, there was little to none, had no flavor, and it was canned. I know canned sauce when I taste it. This was especially shocking because Sally's is known for their sauce. I'm very disappointed because I usually love the sauce at Sally's l, but this wasn't it. And then there's another problem: the pizza came out burnt and cold. New Haven style is slightly charred, not BURNT. It wasn't just the crust; it was also the undercarriage. See the photos I attached. It also took 50 minutes from the time our order was placed to get our one pizza when the restaurant wasn't even at half occupancy. Service was terrible!! We weren't even offered red pepper or parm with our pizza and weren't asked if we wanted dessert. Not like we wanted to stay after that mess, but it would've been nice to be asked. Our server was never near our table and it took a long time to get the things we wanted. We felt completely ignored all night. I feel like this is totally understandable on a busy night, but the place wasn't packed by any means and there were only a few tables occupied. We had to wait an extra 20 minutes after we finished our pizza before our server came around again and just handed us the check and walked away without a word. Not coming back.

To me it almost tastes like a clam pasta on a pizza. It's basically just what the name implies. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again but the tomato pie was great. Our service was stellar. I'm conflicted on this 2/5 rating since I wish there was a 2.5/5 option here. There are some promising things about Frank Pepe's: a coal-fired oven, photos of the same white clam pizza I ordered that look more like pizzas I had in Italy than the one I got, and other options for toppings that might work out better. Perhaps asking for light garlic and maybe the addition of the calabrian chilies from the seasonal special pizza (or pickled jalapeños, if available) would've fixed the balance (and topping palatability) of this pizza. A different pizza also may be substantially tastier, but goshdarnit, we're close enough to the ocean that I'd like to think the white clam is a slam-dunk. It's even listed in neon in the window! As ordered, unchanged, off the menu, though, I feel like I need to leave this state for a pizza just to feel something. Connecticut calling itself "the pizza state" has thus far been a lie; a cruel joke wherein a few outstanding outliers try to gloss over the fact that most of the state's pizza is mid-to-bad. "Mystic Pizza" being one of the state's most famous audiovisual exports sort of fits given that the availability of standout pizza here appears to be a mystical unicorn I've yet to find after moving here last year. Pepe's gets serious props for using large chunks of clams that don't look like the typical, uniformly cut, restaurant-supply-can chunks, but they were a bit rubbery and almost completely drowned out by the amount of garlic. It's like they were cooked too long, and the moisture from the clams evaporated accordingly. The crust had a little crunch to it as well, but lacked the crispy bubbles and heavier charred spots I expect from this style of pizza and from the assorted menu photos. Either go foldable or go harder on the fire--anywhere in between lands in disappointment territory. Commit to a bit. $8 a pint is a bit much for basic beer selections like Sam Adams and Peroni, too, but that's sort of my least concern. We live in Hell where everything is expensive lately, and at least beer prices haven't shot up as badly as gas prices. I probably should've ordered the sangria in hindsight. White peach? Here for it. Also, the staff was friendly, and service was prompt. I really should give it a second chance with a more traditional tomato-sauce pizza, or maybe a margherita. If you go, expect it to fall short of the hype unless whoever made the nicely bubbly white clam pie in the photos posted here is manning the oven. Unless you like garlic as much as I like cheese, consider asking to go light on the garlic for a better-balanced pizza if you order this one.
