For special meals, this is the place we like to go. We like it so much, we went there for our one-year anniversary. The service has always been great. The bread and roasted garlic are a nice way to start the meal. We have tried many of their entrees and have never been dissappointed. Their martinis are to be tried to be enjoyed. read more

Where do I start? I expect a popular restaurant to be busy on a Saturday night, so it was kind of silly of my family to arrive 5 mins before our 8:15 reservation. It was past 8:30 when we got a table; and in the time waiting witnessed a bunch of unhappy customers, one group, who had a 7:30 reservation that didn't sit down until 8:30. That is unacceptable in my book. Further, when a table finally cleared,it took 5 mins for someone to come over and another 5 mins for them to finish clearing it. Not the best impression to make with an entryway full of waiting people. When we sat down, it was next to the windows, which would normally be fine except a door to their patio was right next to us and there was a draft coming in. I ate with my coat on the whole time. My appetizer and the bread were actually very good. I got the butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter and it was cooked perfectly. A nice combination of sweet and savory. I am not usually a seafood person but enjoy scallops and when I saw they came with asparagus risotto, it was a no brainer. The scallops were good - nice and brown on the outside but soft on the inside. Unfortunately, the risotto was probably the worst thing I've ever been served in a restaurant....let's just say Gordan Ramsay would not approve. It was very bland (no seasoning/salt) and watery, not creamy how risotto should be. Another thing I found odd is they serve barilla pasta. I'm sorry but if I want barilla pasta I'll stay home and cook it myself. While our actual waitress was nice, and some of the food was good, I wouldn't go back.. read more

I had the pleasure of having a take-out order of Penne al Buttero last evening. It was fantastic! Even more so, I was pleasantly surprised at the accompanying roasted garlic bulb, bread and olives! I wasn't expecting it and it brought a little bit of Max home with me. Nice touch! read more

I've been here a few times, most recently to celebrate the purchase of some home decor (we'd been searching all. day.). We sat at the bar and promptly ordered drinks: dirty martini for me, bacardi and diet for mom. It may seem low-end, but they carry smirnoff, my favorite vodka for dirty martinis. I was asked 'how dirty?' which, in my book, is always a good thing, since i like them extra dirty. Properly equipped with drinks, we perused the menu. There was an interesting soup of the day, braised veal with wheat berries, but we really were just looking to share some snacks. As soon as i noticed burrata, i knew we were getting it. If you've never had burrata, imagine a ball of mozzarella the size of your fist. Break through the outside layer of skin, and you'll find some silky, lovely, luxurious, runny cheese. It's basically mozz that has not fully set all the way through. Max's version was exemplary, served on a pool of olive oil, with lightly roasted roma tomatoes and fresh basil. With bread, this is a meal unto itself. Perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper, the only thing i would add is a small side salad dressed in balsamic. Delish! Our other choice were their meatballs, a combination of pork, beef, and veal (a combination of meats is always best for flavor). These were tender, juicy, and flavorful. The accompanying sauce was glorious in its own right, and did cause me to request extra bread. The bread, by the by, is really like a plain pizza crust with garlic and herbs added. Ours arrived piping hot with a touch of char- absolute perfection. My only criticism is that the dish- both meatballs and sauce- was a bit salty. Tasty, but i was definitely aware of the salt level. I deducted one star because i sat with an empty martini glass for quite some time. I'm sorry but, the whole point of sitting at the bar is to avoid that situation. In fact, i literally had to say 'pardon me, i'd like another martini.' I think if i hadn't spoken up, i would not have been offered another drink. Funny, since, at $8.75 each, this is clearly the easiest way to run up a check. Regardless, this is a cozy, casual, kinda romantic spot. The food is spot-on and, while traditional, always has a few interesting, thoughtful details. I'm sure i'll be back when in the area. read more

I went here in February. I ordered the braised short rib (or some sort of rib)and it was the best I've ever had! It literally melted off the bone and I was so surprised as I how tender it was. I also had a chicken Alfredo that they specially made for me. Apparently they do not usually have chicken Alfredo? I thought it was a bit odd. Great ambience and great service. Parking is easy! read more

While I have dined here in the past, today's experience was especially outstanding. We hosted a bridal shower here this afternoon and the entire process from start to finish was perfect. The executive chef Steve helped us plan a perfect menu of appetizers, a salad, three entree choices and three dessert choices. He accommodated our gluten sensitive and lactose intolerant guests without sacrificing quality. The food and service were above our expectations and our family and friends were thrilled. What was most impressive to me was that none of the food had that "mass produced" feel to it. Value wise they cannot be beat- most area resturants were quoting $10-$15 more per person with minimum spend, but Max A Mia gave us a high quality meal with great service at a terrific price Try them for dinner, try them for hosting your next event, just try them! read more

Mediocre at best is how I would describe this restaurant. My wife and I recently moved out this way and had heard great things about this place. We felt rushed to finish and leave, the calamari app was significantly better than the entrees. It's highly over priced for what you get and I would prefer 110 Grill or The Market place. We will not be returning again. read more

This particular review is based upon my happy hour experience after work early evening on a Friday. As a job-hunting post grad, I have grown particularly fond of restaurants that offer happy hours with food specials. Max A Mia's happy hour does not (yet?) include drink specials but they have a menu of $2 appetizers. My best friend were immediately seated at the bar for the happy hour but neither of us felt like drinking so we both ordered water. I commend the bartender for serving us with a smile instead of getting irritated we weren't going to be racking up a drink tab. Additionally, he was quick to refill our waters whenever they became low. We ordered four appetizers out of the list of eight happy hour food choices. We chose the caprese, federa, calamari and pomodro stone pie. The other options included three other types of stone pie and mussels. The food came out quickly and the portions were impressive for being $2 a plate. I was impressed by the quality and presentation of all the food. I was particularly impressed by the federa -Warm fresh mozzarella and sage wrapped with crispy Prosciutto di Parma with a side of arugula. The menu said something about sundried pesto but the arugula was dressed with lemon and something else... I doubt it was the sundried pesto. Regardless, I was impressed by how savory the dish was. The other three appetizers were good, excellent quality and value for happy hour. I suppose I could be nitpicky about the small details about how the food might've missed being perfect, but hey, if I'm paying $2 a plate, I was completely happy! Happy hour at Max A Mia is the opportunity to get the taste of this restaurant at an absolute fraction of the price you'd pay for a regular meal here. Take it from a poor post-grad, this happy hour's worth the value! So... anyone know of any job openings? read more

I am not a fan of the Max restaurants but I had a great time at Max a Mia... Sat outside, enjoyed a couple Corona's, had a delicious Cobb salad and will go back. For a more in depth meal, I would've normally waited to write this after a couple times I went but I was very happy with my first experience and the decent prices warranted this review. read more

This past Friday, husband and I decided to go to Max's on a whim... meaning we had no reservations, but figured we'd at least try to get a spot. We arrived at 6:15 and asked to be placed on the list. They told us about a 45 minute wait. This was fine - we had nowhere to be and were just excited to be out and about without our three kids, frankly. We cozied up to some bar stools and ordered a beer (him) and a glass of pinot noir. We were chit-chatting and having a grand ol' time, and drained our drinks. We ordered another round, and at some point I looked at my phone and noticed that it was well after 45 minutes - about 7:35. I didn't even care, I had my wine and we weren't starving yet. The hostesses felt horrible, and the manager came over and apologized profusely. We were absolutely fine, but I was really happy that they were so apologetic. I hadn't realized the time had passed, but if you think about it, an hour and 20 minutes is a pretty long time to wait. We ordered the fried calamari for an appetize, and our waitress brought out the fresh bread. When the calamari came, they also included a fried mozzerella and proscuitto dish on the house! Totally unnecessary, as we weren't even upset, but definitely appreciated. The appetizers were absolutely amazing. Their calamari is a freaking revelation - crispy, with fried cherry peppers and two different sauces. The mozzerella came with a microgreen salad which really cut down on the fatty cheese. For our meals, my husband ordered the burger (He does this all the time, I try to go for "fine dining" and he eats... a hamburger.) plate and I ordered the ricotta gnocchi with duck, butternut squash, and swiss chard. The gnocchi were perfect - like pillows- and the duck was awesome. The best part was the squash, it complimented the dish so well. I ate 85% of it, and tried to save the rest of it. My husband said his burger was right up there with Plan B, or Wood-N-Tap. The chips were homemade and really, really good. We opted to not have dessert, but I was SO incredibly satisfied by my experience. They really tried to make up for our crap situation, and it was our own fault for not making reservations. Our bill for dinner was only $45, although I will say we probably dropped another $40 at the bar while we waited. Overall, great time and wonderful food & atmosphere! read more

I'm a fan of the Max Restaurant Group and have been to many of their locations. This was my first time eating at Max A Mia and it did not disappoint. Went last night for a family gathering party of seven seated promptly. The restaurant was full, didn't realize on Thursdays they offer half-price bottles of wine what a bonus! We started with the carpaccio and fried, Calamari. They brought a basket of bread with foccicia and Tuscan bread with a marinara dipping sauce. Also marinated olives and baked garlic. So yummy. I ordered the Max a Penne. I added mushroom, delicious very light perfect if you don't want a heavy sauce. My friend from Arizona can never get good Italian food there so he ordered the baked pasta. We all shared salads Caesar salad's and Tuscan salad generous portions. For desert the coconut cake and bocce ball I wish I had taken pictures of them the cake was enough for seven people to have many bites. This place is never a disappointment. The food is fresh hot and delicious the service friendly. Always feel the most important part of the restaurant is the greeting at the door the host staff were friendly and polite. Very well managed staff a great dining experience. it's always nice when you bring a guest from another state especially as far away as Arizona to enjoy good Italian food and they leave wanting to come back. read more

I haven't been to Max a Mia in years, but I was up in Avon, CT recently and was able to stop in for lunch. In general this place is really good, just like the other Max restaurants, but it's in a little bit of a hidden location in a strip mall off of US44. They used to (~2011) provide roasted garlic with bread, but this time we got 2 types of bread and olive oil to start off lunch. The regular bread is fine, but then they give you this herb bread out of their wood-fired oven and it's incredible. Just like Ruth's Chris, I could show up here just to drink and eat bread. Because of their great bread, their wood fired pizza is also very good and has a lot of different specialty options. I also had the Tuscan Salad, which has great chicken and mozzarella in it. It also has these chunks of fried corn bread croutons that taste great, but the last thing you need here is more bread. One of the few things I miss about CT is the Max restaurants and Max a Mia is no exception to that. read more

Max a Mia is a restaurant specializing in Italian cuisine. Ironically, one of the most popular restaurants in Avon, is one of my least favorites. Positives: Staff- Every waiter or waitress we get is always friendly, fun and helpful. My sister's friend is a vegan and finding something was hard for her. Our waitress offered to have the kitchen create a specialty dish of pasta and vegetables for her. And it was tasty she said! Ambiance- Every time my family and I walk in the lighting, decor and smell of fresh bread is intoxicating. It is always a pleasure to just enjoy the ambiance. Bread- What else do I need to say? It's delicious. Variety- Pretty good selection of food. Negatives: The Food- probably the worst thing to be on a negative list. Now, I don't know if it is just because I don't like sauce or tomatoes or onions or peppers etc., but I just never seem to find something on the menu that satisfies my need for simplicity. This is more of a personal negative, but when I can drive, I probably won't go to Max a Mia. Overall, a great restaurant if you love Italian food. I have never had a major problem when I was there. And hey, who doesn't love good bread? :) read more

We ate here while visiting friends from the area. My girlfriend and I arrived ahead of our husbands so sat in the bar area enjoying a glass of wine. The waitress that took our order was friendly and knowledgable. The front of the house staff was also friendly and accommodating. We finally decided to sit at our table and when we were led to our table it was too close to the open kitchen and the smoke bothered my girlfriend so the hostess pleasantly accommodated our request and sat us at another table. Our waiter was friendly and professional and attentative. We started with wine and cocktails and 2 appetizers. We had the calamari which was good, not the best I have had but pretty decent. Prior to that we were brought a dish of olives and the house bread with a delicious tomato side dish for dipping and spreading. We also ordered the federa appetizer which was out of this world delicious. I ordered the gnocchi which was fresh with a very tasty sauce and sausage which was tender and tasty. My husband had the Max-a-penne which he said was good but he preferred my dish more. The restaurant is open but not overly loud for conversation, the tables are nicely spaced. I enjoyed our dinner here very much and would return if we were local. The food was delicious, served in a timely manner, excellent wait staff and front of the house staff. They get an A+ for service and obviously understand the importance of good customer relations. read more

Awesome atmosphere, nice friendly wait staff, really good penne pasta. My mom has an allergy to Wheat and Gluten (Celiac) so she always has to ask what she can and cannot eat which can sometimes be difficult. I was very impressed when the waitress came back with an entire menu that was for people with allergies to wheat and they even brought her a special basket of gluten free bread from a local baking company! read more

Was here recently on a Fri nite..waited about 20 min for a table (hadn't made reservations). Our waiter was very good, friendly and attentive.. The bread was served with roasted garlic (Yummm!) and a spicy tomato sauce, both on the side. Really liked that sauce, it had a definite kick! Had the Tuscan salad, which was good..liked the polenta croutons and more roasted garlic, yes :-) Shared the funghi stone pie--mushrooms, goat cheese, asparagus, onions, Marsala sauce.. While I like all the ingredients, somehow it didn't come together for me..seemed like something was missing--I added salt, which helped..was almost too sweet without a balance..was ok, but I wouldn't order it again. Dessert--the polenta cake with white chocolate sauce--one of the best desserts I've ever had!!! A touch if sweetness and great texture, just delicious! This is my least favorite of the Max restaurant group, but still a worthy place to check out :-) read more

Always a great place to go, excellent food!, great atmosphere, usually great service...just walked in tonight, yes, no reservations...hostess sat us at the worse table in an empty dining room...shame on her...now at the bar experiencing great food and an attentive batender... hard to forgive you hostess!... read more

This is one of my family's favorite restaurants to go to, to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, awards, promotions, and so on! It's always a treat to dine at Max a Mia and we always have a great time chatting, enjoying roasted garlic, and a fresh meal cooked and seasoned to perfection. The waitresses and hostesses are always friendly, and the dishes always come out hot. Some of my family's favorite things to order are the salmon, gnocchi, native pear salad, and burrata. Fortunately, if we are feeling adventurous and like straying away from our "go to" orders, we know that whatever we receive will be delicious. The only reason I didn't give Max a Mia 5 stars is because our appetizers have been forgotten a few times. We understand that it is busy, as it is a popular place, but by the time we remind someone and can get it, we are starving! Still, this is a family favorite and we'll be dining here year after year! read more

I've been here twice. Once for date night, and once with my family. Max a Mia strikes me as a nice restaurant. When there with my date, we enjoyed dim lighting, no TVs in the background, great service and solid Italian food. When taking our kids here, I was a bit worried on whether or not they'd be received well. To my delight, they had crayons and a coloring page for the kids, and there was a family seated near us with young ones. The server was more than kind and complimentary of our family, so we felt very comfortable there with our young ones (five kids, aged 2 through 10). Food: date night dinner was homemade pasta for both of us. The menu changes based on what's fresh or interesting for the chef, so I don't remember exactly what we had, but just that we did thoroughly enjoy it! Portions were not huge, but we were too full for dessert, so that tells you something. Family night food was solid as well. We had pizzas for the kids (thin crust, not too much cheese or sauce, and cooked well). Flavorful, and definitely was better than a cheap pizza joint pizza. Dad had homemade ravioli (short rib ravioli with a mushroom sauce) that he thoroughly enjoyed and wish there was more of. I had a steak which was cooked perfectly. Service was very good. Our server was attentive but not overbearing. She answered all our questions and was very patient as we have two kids with food allergies. She was friendly to us and to our kids. I do think some items on the menu are overpriced, such as the steak. And would like to see some "basics" like cheese ravioli on the menu. I feel like we waited a little too long for our food, considering it was pretty quiet in the restaurant (it was a Tuesday night at 6:30). But I will go back with and without kids. read more

Food isn't bad, service was not great. Our waitress seemed like she was having a terrible day and taking it out on us. The mushroom app was really good. I won't rush back here, but I also won't completely write it off. Maybe our waitress was just having an off night. read more

Kale salad was a huge disappointment. Like eating a broom. Dry tasteless. Dressing was Light & tasteless. A dusting of nuts and extras to few to even talk about. Goat cheese was a small table spoon full. Rest of the meal was great but to mess up a salad like this so badly, it's hard to look beyond this MIS-step. I should have asked them to fix it. If I go past again I may stop back in. read more

This was our first visit to this restaurant. We went for an impromptu lunch on a Wednesday. It was somewhat busy with a mix of casual crowd and business lunches. We were surprised by the modern decor, I don't know what we were expecting but it wasn't that. Leather booths, rustic wood beams, glassed in open kitchen with fire brick oven for pizzas. Our waitstaff was pretty friendly even though it felt we waited awhile for our food to arrive. We started with an appetizer of prosciutto and cheese, very tasty. I ordered the Pom Mojito which was flavorful, I don't usually like pomegranate. I ordered the California Cobb salad and added shrimp. My husband ordered a spicy penne and sweet sausage dish. My salad was somewhat lackluster. It's a salad I know but this didn't stand out in any way. The avocado was over ripe and mushy. The shrimp were so cooked they were zombie dead. The waitress agreed and removed them from the bill. My husbands pasta arrived in a cast iron dish hot from the oven. Spicy, zesty, rich and saucy. He liked it very much even though he was sweating buckets from the spice. We decided to try some dessert since it was our first visit and they didn't disappoint. I ordered Tiramisu and received a giant slice. The coffee and liqueur flavors came through and the cream was rich. My husband got a creme brûlée dessert with a nice crisp sugar crust. It was creamy and smooth underneath. The cappuccino and latte were great. I'm giving four stars for the atmosphere, waitstaff and desserts. My husbands food and the app were good. We may give it a try for dinner or maybe just a dessert place in town read more

My husband, teenage son and I had lunch today at this restaurant. My husband ate here years ago when he lived in Connecticut. He raved about their garlic baked snd served in terracota over bread- the garlic was like butter, spread over the bread. We ordered the baked garlic with the bread, two salads -- kale (lake, squash, pumpkin seeds with goat cheese) and a house salad (arugula and endive, red onions). Both salads for lunch were a good portion, filled the plate. More than enough salad, could have shared. We ordered two appetizers, prosciutto wrapped mozzarella (3) and the mussels with chorizo, stewed tomatoes served with two slices of toasted sourdough. Our son ordered a prosciutto panini sandwich with fries. Everything was very good, service was excellent. The restaurant has been remodeled since my husband was there on the late 90's. It was a great dining experience. We will return. read more

One of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to. I used to come here on my way to Boston from NYC. Now I live in the area and it has become one of my go-to restaurants. The food here has always been very good. It is too seafood-oriented for my liking, but that's ok. The last time I went, we were a party of 6. My parents and I were out in the Avon area and I decided to bring them to Max a Mia since they like Max Fish in Glastonbury and I liked Max a Mora when it was open. My Dad is a veteran and I wanted to take them to a nice place since it was veteran's day. They had a rib eye special and he decided to order, he likes his meat cooked well. I mentioned to my father the rib eye should come out pretty good for being cooked well because it has more fat in it. My mom and I shared the short rib ravioli, she's a very small eater and won't order a meal of her own anymore. I ordered a ceasar salad to add. Now I've been a waitress in my life for almost 20 years, working for top notch steak houses and a well know Italian restaurant here in Connecticut. I was disappointed with Max a Mia. Now I understand it's not the norm for a Cheif to not over cook anything. My dad's steak was not quite cooked through so we gave a portion of the steak back to cook just a bit longer. I did not expect a place like Max a Mia to have the steak for over 10 mins and when I asked the waitress don't forget my dad's steak, she gave me this look like "yeah when I get to it". I was afraid they would completely burn it. We finally received the steak back from what appeared to be the general manager. Sure enough they brought it back burnt covered with a sauce to hide it. read more

Consistently yummy! I had the steak and husband had the lasagna last time and would highly recommend both!

I've been coming here for over 10 years, and I by far, had the WORST service I've ever had here. It took us 30 minutes to get our drinks, our server was flighty and not very nice. She spent the majority of the night slicing bread. We didn't even eat at prime time! Our reservation was for 8:15, drinks didn't come till 8:50! Super disappointed in Max a Mia, will not be coming here again. read more

I always give Max a Mia 5 stars! Even during this crazy time with Covid ruling our lives, I ordered a Ceasar Salad. It came with their awesome Foccaccia bread, a roasted head of garlic, a small container of olives and a small container of dipping sauce! I was so excited to see the roasted head of garlic! JI'm a huge fan of garlic and Max A Mia's Ceasar salad dressing. I judge all Ceaser salad dressings by Max A Mia's. Just what you get in the restaurant during normal times! Never thought I would see the extras with the salad, considering it was only a salad. Kudos to Max! Also, they serve their take out in cardboard boxes, not tin containers. Very classy. As I'm writing this, I'm smelling the roasted garlic head wafting in my direction and salivating. Love, love all your food! Best of luck during this insane time! read more

These guys do it right. Fresh, fresh, fresh with a dash of creativity seasoned with smooth, professional know-how. Went to Max a Mia for the first time in June and had SUCH an amazing meal. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. A lovely, friendly and attentive server. She was a doll. Our first lunch visit was A+++! We couldn't believe we've never stopped by before! This is the first Max Group restaurant we've been to. We were told by our lovely server that if we emailed the chef about our delicious tomato soup that we *might* be able to get the recipe since it was a seasonal special and isn't always available. I emailed about our great first visit and the ask about the recipe and sadly, I didn't get a response at all! I wouldn't have minded if they said, "We can't give it to you but thanks so much for writing." Oh well... Still love this place so much we have been back at least 4 or 5 times in the last two months. FOOD: Some of our favorite dishes: Whipped ricotta, salmon, eggplant lasagna, tomato soup, stone pies SERVICE: Lovely. Prompt even when busy. I have felt a bit rushed at times but I think that is because servers sometimes try to rush lunch orders for you because they assume you need to be back to the office. The lunch time hostess is a bit cold she could smile some more and be glad to see you. ATMOSPHERE: Love the outdoor patio but it's been too hot lately for it. The dining room is small and the A/C is kind of weak (maybe it's the pizza oven?) The layout of some of the dining tables make me feel I'm sharing a table with strangers too. I prefer to sit in the bar area if I have a choice. Star Breakdown: Food 5 / Service 4.5 / Atmosphere 4 If they had emailed me back it may have bumped it to a 5 star overall.
