I really wanted to like Matt's Big Breakfast, especially considering the reputation and the claim of fresh, made-from-scratch food, but this breakfast was incredibly disappointing. Nothing about what I received tasted freshly prepared or made to order. The scrambled eggs were probably the biggest disappointment. They were dense, browned in areas, chewy and almost rubbery instead of soft and fluffy. The texture and flavor honestly reminded me of the type of eggs you'd expect from a cafeteria or fast-food breakfast, as though they had been batch-cooked and sitting in a warmer rather than freshly scrambled. The bacon was so dry and over-crisped that it was closer to beef jerky than freshly cooked bacon. The potatoes also tasted and felt like something that had been prepared in a large batch and held for service. Then there was the pancake. Again, nothing about it tasted particularly fresh or "from scratch." It had the taste and texture of a basic boxed-mix pancake that had been cooked earlier and kept warm. And that's really my issue with the entire meal: everything tasted held rather than freshly prepared. I understand that restaurants have to prep ingredients and that certain foods are made in batches, especially during a busy breakfast service. But when you're positioning yourself as a quality breakfast restaurant and emphasizing food made from scratch, I expect a noticeable difference from what I could get at a fast-food restaurant. The restaurant has a beautiful interior and looked clean. I was initially very excited to try this local breakfast spot, having been heavily recommended by my coworkers to try Matts. I will say i was let down a bit quickly, with the lack of greeting and some unprofessional attire worn by staff. Seeing as the environment was more family based, the server Genesis was dressed in very short shorts, almost exposing private areas. This is quite disgusting and off putting for a family breakfast place. I understand we live in a warmer state, however a Dress Code NEEDS to be implemented on these female servers. I would not recommend families to come with the given dress code deemed acceptable for this establishment. If i wanted to see females inappropriately dressed i would go to a strip club or hooters. Being an elder woman, this is NOT what i look for when coming to enjoy breakfast with my spouse and grandchildren. Very disappointing as the food was amazing and the store manager was friendly and engaging. To be quite honest, my husband and i had assumed he was a server, having been going to all the tables. All the credit goes to the blueberry griddlecakes. They were the star of the show. The holes in the pancakes look a bit unusual at first, but they taste incredible. The blueberries were almost whole, and the pancakes were perfectly fluffy. One of the best pancakes I have ever had. The smash avocado toast can be skipped. The toast was very hard, and overall it just did not stand out. The Hog and Chick was solid, just a mix of all your breakfast favorites so you really cannot go wrong. We stopped in here this morning for breakfast after having an early appointment next-door. They serve breakfast and lunch and at 7:30 on a weekday They were not busy at all. They do have some bench seating that's comfortable, otherwise a lot of the chairs are metal fyi. My husband usually orders one of the big breakfast specials-it was called the rise and shine and it's a lot of food. I usually don't eat a big breakfast so I typically order a side egg. ($2.25) and then share a little bit off his plate, which is plenty for me. The coffee is super strong and tasty Service was quick and efficient and the ambiance is very upbeat. The bright orange colors and the really cool mural on the wall make it fun. They do have daily breakfast specials that rotate and one of the cool things about this place is they use as many local suppliers as they can and provide you a list so you know where your food is coming from. $23 before tip. read more

The pancakes were awful, the bacon was jerky, the potatoes had no seasoning along with being burnt and the eggs were raw still. I sent the pancakes back because I couldn't pull myself to eat them. As usual, it was busy, but we were still able to get a seat rather quickly. The service was friendly and fast, spot on with the other locations I've visited. There inside seating options fill up quickly, so be prepared to wait if you go during peak times on the weekends. The vibe inside is comfortable and relaxing. Food is always amazing! This was my first visit to Matt's Big Breakfast. I remember all the hype when the original location opened but I am not one for waiting in long lines. I am glad that I finally made time to try it out. The Biltmore location is in a busy shopping area so be patient trying to find parking. I was seated right away at the bar. Note: the host does not walk you to the table - I assume because it is a small place. It was only about five minutes before a server took my drink order - coffee. Since this was my first visit I decided to try the classic breakfast option, the Hog & Chick - 2 eggs, option of hashbrowns or home fries, bacon or sausage and toast. I also ordered a short stack of blueberry pancakes. Coffee came first and had a good flavor and the right temp. Food only took another 8 minutes or so. Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned well - golidlocks status - not too much or too little. I opted for the home fries and sausage links. The home fries were cubed potatoes that were cooked well with just enough crunchy pieces around the edges. The sausage (from The Pork Shop in QC) was probably some of the most delicious I've had at a breakfast spot - great texture. The portions were more than satisfactory and I was left with most of the pancakes to take home. The staff was friendly, professional and seemed to be hustling turning over tables and running food. It would be a good spot to stop to grab a bite before/after shopping or running errands. It was a quick bite for a sit down atmosphere. IMHO nothing super exceptional but definitely good quality and service for the price ($33 w/tip). My only complaint is that the coffee is 3.99 but it is good and includes refills. MBB has exactly the kind of consistency for a place I would make my regular breakfast spot. I would eat here again or try another location just for the experience. read more

As always, it was very busy, and the parking at this location is a bit of a challenge not too bad. The service was a little slower than I would like however our server was friendly and the food came out hot and fresh, and like all items here very delicious. We had the first table by the door which wasn't the greatest because I had people at my back almost the entire time I was eating. The rosemary is a nice touch. The coleslaw was okay...I thought the pieces were a bit large...could be shredded more. At least they know how to add some vinegar to the mix. The tuna sandwich, while very tasty, was a disappointment...the pieces of bread were each about an inch thick, and then with the thick tuna salad, it was too big to take a bite. I ended up taking off half of the bread and eating it with a fork. Also, the bread just fell apart, so a bread with more density would be better. read more

But when I went back to Phoenix to visit family, we had some time one morning and I toted 3 other family members who had never been to Phoenix before out to one of my fave breakfast spots. When I lived I. Phoenix, this was one of my go to spots. (Well the one downtown was). This time I went to the location in Biltmore Plaza. I remember this location as it used to be Noca, which I loved also! Matt's took over this location and has brought their great food and awesome service to the biltmore area. Finally decided to try MBB out. Don't know what took so long to try out a diners drive-ins and dives pick. We were able to be seated immediately, we got to the restaurant around noon. So the morning rush was pretty much over. The restaurant was very clean. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I ordered the Saturday morning scramble special. A three egg scramble with pork tenderloin, organic spinach and have already cheese I believe? Hash browns and homemade sourdough toast. Oh and I better not forget the homemade blueberry preserves. The meal was delicious The preserves were perfect The bread was delicious too. The home fries were perfectly prepared with rosemary. If I had one thing that kept me from giving this restaurant five stars they would be I felt like there could have been more pork tenderloin in the scramble. I'm not sure I came across anything significant as far as pork tenderloin was concerned in my scramble. I won't let that stop me from trying them again. The menu looks incredible. read more

Was in town for a wedding. I dropped my girlfriend off for a hair appointment and decided to grab a quick lunch. A friend told me about this place and when I saw it was nearby I knew I had to try it! I walked in only 10 minutes before they were closing, not realizing until I got there. I told them I just wanted to check it out and maybe grab a menu to-go, but the manager and servers insisted I stay and eat. They really made me feel welcome, even though I felt bad to order food so close to closing. I was looking over the menu when the server suggested the daily specials. He mentioned a chorizo omelette with jalapeños that sounded so good I knew I had to try it! I was NOT disappointed that I took his advice. The manager checked on me to make sure I was good while I waited for my food. All the staff members were really nice and accommodating. Got my meal and it was hot, fresh, and delicious! Just the right amount of spice though I did still add a little Tapatio just to make sure. The chorizo is locally sourced with a good kick, the jalapeños added to the kick. Got hash browns on the side which were crispy and always go perfectly with some ketchup. I heard they have really good bacon so I had to try it. It was very fresh, hot, peppered, and thick. Definitely worth having either on the side or in any dish! I would love to come back some time when I'm in the area to try their weekly special. Pro's and Cons... Would I go back and could I recommend it? Yes. Outstanding design, food, restaurant wonderment, stylish uniqueness? No. Memorable? Only one thing stands out for me and it was written on the back of their menu! **All things in this restaurant 'chain', are ALL locally procured items, supposedly the freshest of ingredients, including their coffee, and they 'do not own a microwave or a freezer'?! Who does that today? LOL. So putting those well thought out concepts up front in this review, the food was unfortunately, nothing to report about, truly. We looked hard. For some reasons, even though our meals came out rather quickly, the toast most of the hot items, weren't really warm OR hot. Hash browns were oily and eggs pretty runny. Another dish (Avocado Toast) seemed okay but a bit bulk-ish to get into my fellow person's (adult sized) mouth. Sadly, the coffee wasn't inspire-able either to any degree as well and the only flavored creamers was/were half & half. Our waitress seemed dislocated to check on us and only came back once. Overall, this restaurant's cornerstones are excellent. The food production presented to the table, quality, and overall restaurant presentation were lacking. I'd give another location a second attempt but these styled restaurants with the eco-conscious formulas, should have some incredible taste to the dishes; they didn't. I mean, with locally grown, sustainable products from local vendors, I'd hope they'd have a smash hit for local flavor that tells a tale, draws the crowds for breakfast or lunch, but they don't. I earnestly look for the Foody 'Niches' that inspire and draw you - the READER into a valid spot that you can enjoy from an honest reflection. This place really didn't do that. It was almost a sleep at the wheel and surprisingly at one of THE most wealthiest spots in Phoenix to boot... So, the food was uninspiring, but I will absolutely CREDIT them for the local-vendor-to-the-table ensemble that they've created. There is zero seasoning in their food. We both got the Big Papa breakfast burrito. So bland that salt and hot sauce didn't help. The tortillas was so big that it was mostly tortilla rolled up. Service was pretty much nonexistent. Had to ask for ice tea refill. Had to finally ask for the check. They charged us for a coffee we did not order. They removed it from the bill.
