Homemade ice cream and the softest freshest giant cookie I've ever had. I thought it would be too rich and sweet but it was not. Don't get me wrong, it was sweet but the flavors were well balanced. Service was phenomenal. We asked what flavor the worker thought was the best and her favorite was the toasted coconut. Immediately yes. It was perfect. Creamy but not too sweet. The toasted coconut flavor was very nice. I will be definitely be making this a must do stop on any future visits to Key West. Mattheessen's is a local ice cream and cookie bakery in Key West. They have a few locations dotted around the island. This location we went to was small with a small counter with a couple stools but that's it for seating so plan to stand inside or walk outside to eat. read more

CHOCOLATE CHIP MANIA... There are three Mattheessen's Candy Kitchen locations within Key West open until midnight. As we walked by the Duval Street shop, we noticed gigantic cookies in the display window ready for human consumption. There was a line forming from outside and it was elbow to elbow outside, this seemed like a popular late night snack joint so we checked it out. Ordered a Frisbee sized chocolate chip cookie, look at my hand vs the cookie size in the pic, its crazy. For $7.00, they offer these mammoth cookies offered in oatmeal raisin, peanut butter and sugar. The cookie was lightly warm, and flapped over in my hand with the chocolate chips slowly melting. We also purchased ice cream, which was good on a warm night, but nothing compared to the cookie. Maybe next time we will try the thick fudge slices, priced at $18.95 per pound with a buy two get one free deal. read more

Great little ice cream shop on Duval Street in Key West! We were drawn in by the huge cookies in the window. The decor was so cute with large ice cream cones suspended from the ceiling. My kids got ice cream and I split a chocolate chip cookie with the hubs. I'm not a big sweets eater but did enjoy the soft chewy cookie! The lines were long (one line for cream and one for cookies) but we were greeted immediately upon entering and the wait was short. The most as big as my face the chocolate chip is my favorite with just the perfect amount of chocolate chips with a buttery taste. The one that's a must get is the peanut butter fudge - you will know it when you see it!!! We split it between 7 people. Perfect. In the mood for cookies and we stumbled upon Mattheessen's. We were so glad they were open late. Walking in, we saw they had cookies, desserts, and ice cream. The cookies display is what really sold out. Plentiful. Beautifully displayed. We ordered 3 cookies. They were huge. As big as someone's face. We also tried a flavor of ice cream because they allowed us to sample. Our total was about $30 which was a lot for 3 cookies! We came in because of the HUGE cookies in the windows and our inability to resist but I noticed they had a ice cream bar at the back and so we got 2 scoops of ice cream (Cookie Monster and Dulce de luce) and 2 cookies- the sugar and the one covered in fudge. The ice cream scoops were HUGE we shared between 3 adults and were unable to finish it, but it was absolutely DELICIOUS. The cookies- the sugar was definitely my fav- a cake like texture, not overly sweet, I could eat the whole thing (almost) lol. How can anyone walk past this store and not come in for a sweet treat !?!?! The store specializes in fudge, ice cream, cookies, and anything else sweet ! We walked in with our friends and before we knew it, we all walked out with an oatmeal raisin cookie the size of a handbag !! It was huge ! Easily 8 or 10 inches wide, half a pound in weight. The cookie was delicious and moist...just perfectly made. To give you some history on the shop, I can tell you that in 1993, the Mattheessen's moved to Key West and opened a coffee kiosk named after their daughter, "Kayla's Cafe." Not long after, they expanded to open a fudge and cookie store. With the success of that fudge and cookie store now they have three locations in Key West. Mattheessen's serves only the freshest products using quality ingredients. Once you bite into one of their half-pound cookies, sample their marble slab fudge, try their refreshingly sweet chocolate dipped key lime pie, or have a lick of their homemade ice cream, you'll be coming back for more.
