As I entered the shop, I noticed that it was in a bit of disarray due to a pending move. That didn't take away from how good the pastries looked. I got a slice of carrot cake and a key lime pie slice. I got both thinking I wouldn't be able to finish them but I was wrong! The pastries were rich and flavorful without being overly sweet. Cake icing usually tends to be too sugary for me but the icing on the carrot cake was good and not overpowering. I am a fan of key lime pie and this was made perfectly in my opinion. We ordered an 8 inch cake via email for our daughter's small wedding. Steve was responsive in answering questions and when we arrived we gave Steve the cake topper we brought and paid the $100, which included delivery to Sunset Key. The cake was delivered on time with the topper. The cake was delicious! The only nit was that we ordered German chocolate filling with the funfetti cake with buttercream frosting. The cake that we got did not have any chocolate in it. When I followed up with Steve later he replied they don't usually put chocolate filling in a cake unless the cake itself is chocolate with chocolate buttercream frosting. It was still quite yummy! We went to Key West to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday this past week on 8/21. Mind you, ten of us flew from L.A. and flew/drive down and also visited relatives in Fort Lauderdale. So I completely forgot to order a birthday cake! As we were driving on the way to Key West, I found Key West Cakes via Yelp and saw a beautiful turquoise, sea shell themed cake. I decided to call them. The lady (I forgot her name) helped me decide to get exactly what I envisioned by asking me what my daughter's favorite color is (pink) and flavor (white cake with strawberries). I told her I liked that sea shell theme. She suggested an ombre cake frosting from white to light pink to dark pink with that theme. A white cake with strawberries & cream will be extra but will be perfect. So I ordered it and I wanted edible sea shells. She offered to put glitter on it and deliver it to the restaurant I chose for the birthday dinner for extra $10 charge. However, I had to ask the restaurant if this was okay with them and confirm the time. So I had to call her back. No problem for the restaurant and I selected Duffy's Seafood and Steakhouse as it seemed to be a Key West institution from the reviews! Needless to say, that $80 cake was worth every penny! It was delicious with just the right amount of sugar in the icing, creamy strawberries (in little bits) and moist white cake. The sea shells were made of white chocolate! My daughter (and the rest of us) loved that cake so much!! We were still eating it a couple of days later! The next day, I personally went to their bakery and thanked all of them for the excellent cake and promised to write a 5-star review!! Five years ago my wife had the good sense to order our wedding cake from Key West Cakes. I realized I needed to bring her home a cupcake to remind her how wonderful KW is just enough to become snowbirds from NE FL. The cupcake was just as I remembered, a triple chocolate - so decadent and tender with the right amount of butter cream and chocolate ganache as filling. Erica loves anything Boston cream so I couldn't disappoint her. The delicious creamy custard and the chocolate frosting...yum. Just writing this reminds me of the taste. The Key Lime cupcake had a light citrus taste with an extra kick of key lime in the frosting. Super pleased with the lavender flower decorated cupcake which had a subtle lavender flavor-just right. Also have to give high marks to their key lime pie! After trying several around town, I wished I had tried their sooner- would have had it more often!! I won a gift certificate for cupcakes at a local bar and the next day, I walked across town to get them. The bakery's website looked good and I went during the posted hours; it was open and I walked in. There were lots of delicious smelling cookies and cake slices available, but no cupcakes. I called to someone working towards the back and held up the gift certificate. He said they had no cupcakes , so I asked if I could get some cookies instead. he looked me in the eye and said they had nothing available - no explanation or apology and then he just turned and went back to what he was doing. Chose this as the place to do my 21st birthday cake. My mom and I supplied the company with a picture of the cake exactly how we wanted it to look and they told us they were able to do it (minus the fresh flowers which was completely ok with us). However, when we received the cake the colors were completely wrong and the cake itself looked nothing like what we had asked for. Additionally, we were overcharged what we were quoted and after reaching out to the company about all of this, they have since blown it off and made it seem like the cake was completely fine. They also have not offered to refund what we were overcharged. All that has been said was "was the cake not delicious?" NOT at all the point and honestly not even that great of a taste. I was looking to have a very cute cake for a special birthday and instead was left extremely upset with how it turned out, especially after reading so many great reviews. To top everything off, the staff was very rude and unwelcoming to my family when picking up the cake (before we even saw what it looked like!) If the bakery had thought this was going to be too difficult to achieve, that is all that would have needed to have been said and we would have found somewhere else to make it. Instead, we were left extremely dissatisfied and upset with what we got. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone in the future. I'm usually the girl who removes frosting from any and everything but looking at their cupcakes, one could tell that it wasn't average. I tried the frosting first. Certainly light, almost whipped. The cake was soft and moist enough, but something was missing. One of the other reviews said "butter" and I think I would have to agree. They lacked that buttery, sweet taste. Inside was not loose and creamy, but a thicker consistency much like bird stuffing. - Flavor: On point.
