Though I had my doubts from the name and branding, this was one of the memorable key lime pies I had on my vacation. Glad it lived up to the name! I'm not knocking the name, but when you're traveling to a new city, it's tough to differentiate the thrills from the frills. Hell, I live in Denver, and so many things are named Rocky Mountain this and Mile High that. Every city has their thing! Store itself is clean and comfortable. It's a grab and go type of place, but plenty of seating if you can't contain your key lime pie urges. Guess which camp we were in, haha. YEP, we ate it there. Now my doubts came when I saw the pie was chilled. You can even see a little icy sparkle from my pics. Presentation wise, there's no meringue. I personally like the texture meringue brings. We went to the Key West Key Like Pie Company because Skipper from Hemingway recommended it and if I am visiting a city and a local who has already introduced me to something fantastic recommends a stop, I am going to go. A cute little shop it offers key lime pie in many different sizes. As we were on a cruise we elected to try a small version - a little pie slice and pie in a cup. This was good but way too sweet for me so we didn't end up finishing much of it. After a wonderful day in Key West, my wife and I decided to grab 2 slices of Key Lime "Pie" to take back to our condo. Once I paid cash for the total and left a tip, the worker told me that "There's no egg in the key lime pie so it will melt like ice cream." Considering I had a 1hr drive back to Marathon, that was wonderful news. I decided to grab a few plastic spoons on my way out the door and look for a place nearby to eat them. I found a nice park overlooking a marina 5 minutes into our drive. The 2 slices were already starting to melt. "Pie" was way too tart, no meringue, barely any crust, and I've had better Key Lime Pie from the bakery at Publix. If I wanted an ice cream cake, I would go to Dairy Queen, not a place that claims to specialize in Key Lime Pie. Next time, you might want to mention to the customer before they pay that the pie will melt. Found the timing interesting. Ignore this place if considering real Key Lime Pie. It wasn't super tart - so if you want a really "limey" pie maybe another place is better for you. Key Lime pie is something you have to get while in Key West so this was one of the first and primary things I kept talking about on our drive here. The pie was tart and sweet but wasn't exactly what I was expecting so I didn't love it - didn't hate it - but it wasn't the best Key Lime I've ever had. I preferred the bowl option for ease of walking while eating but we didn't try some of the other things bc I just couldn't eat it all! They have a large menu and a bunch of things to try to cool you off on a warm day. I'm pretty sure the guy behind the counter said the slices were frozen, and you could tell a little bit, but they were still good. This is by far the creamiest key lime pie that I have tried in the Keys so far. I preferred the mini key lime pie because it was nice to have so much of the crust, and it wasn't as cold as the slice. Vacationing in the Keys in search of the best Keylime pie from Miami to Key West. We came to the conclusion that the best service and the best pie that we sampled was from The Original Keylime Pie Company of Key West. Located at 511 Greene St., Key West, FL 33040. It's both a sit down relax or grab and take to go place. It's great to take kids or young at heart ppl my mature age, as they have a viewing area where you can see the pies being made. Also good to note this is the ONLY PLACE that offered a GLUTEN FREE PIE option. Not only was the pie sampling a hit, but the counter person Brittany was very outgoing, great vibe, knowledgeable, and attentive. I enjoyed learning how they prepare the various items on the menu. I'm not a fan of Mile high meringue keylime pie, extra burnt meringue pie or pudding textured Keylime pie, nor the meh bland Keylime pie... We sampled a few I was in awe that their whipped cream was house made and one of the best whipped creams that I've ever had. It wasn't overly sweet and it wasn't overly buttery characteristics that you get for over whipping. It was the perfect creamy, fluffy, thick whipped cream like Grandma could make. Some of the other pie companies def. use canned whip cream or nondairy whipped cream or just use meringue. You can see this place takes their baking seriously using excellent ingredients. My favorite, because I like chocolate and anything with chocolate is worth the calories... is the dark chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick. It was served with a cup of whipped cream on the side. It had the perfect tartness (party on your taste buds) and not overly sweet and that is what my taste buds like. Don't understand some of the reviews saying don't go here you'll break your teeth on frozen Key lime pie and how horrible the servers are. We go on vacation in The Keys to experience new things and enjoy the upbeat Happy vibe everyone has. Sampling is the best part. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose because everyone doesn't have the same taste. If you run into a server on a bad day, try and turn that frown upside down. Our Key lime pie was definitely not frozen hard as a rock as you can see from the added photos. It was absolutely convenient to be able to tourist walk with it in hand on a hot day and not have to carry the togo container until you find a trash bin. I will add without naming, that three other pie companies we tried did not have the best of service or even a positive vibe. Wait times were long, to just get a slice of pie on a plate, not plating thrills. Staff busy and not social and overly anxious to tell us that "they are the best and first, or original; everything else fell short and not even bother going elsewhere to compare. I don't really care who is the original recipe, I guess that's a standing dispute. I'm glad that my daughter and I ventured out and found this Key Lime pie. Everyone enjoys different taste so venture out and try many ; I would say if you're in the keys, definitely go here perhaps even more than once they have a variety of items on their menu with the perfect tartness, texture & temperature and great staff like Brittany. read more
