There are plenty of places to get dessert in Key West. I know because we tried most of them! What's nice about Mattheessen's is that they offer some items that are uniquely their own. Food: The one item that really stood out was the PB Fudge Cookie. It's a large peanut butter cookie with a thick layer of peanut butter fudge, topped with another thick layer of chocolate fudge. Yes, it's one big and delicious cookie. It's expensive at $12, but it's large enough to feed a family of six. There were other items that looked equally amazing, including the chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons. On another visit a couple of days later, we tried the Key lime pie, and it was excellent. The crust had a rich, buttery flavor and held together well. Instead of the traditional meringue topping, they used whipped cream, which was a nice touch. We even asked for extra. Service: The staff were friendly, helpful, and patient. We never felt rushed. Atmosphere: The shop is well lit, clean, and has an upbeat aesthetic. I'm not so sure about their giant cookies, which appear to be their signature offering. I could be wrong (I'm allergic to chocolate, so it's probably best to ignore my cookie opinions) but they seem way too unmanageably large to possibly be good -- unless you're somewhat drunk (which you probably are, if you're in Key West... even the name of this shop has way too many superfluous letters to not be a hallucination). But, that doesn't matter. Never mind the comically large cookies. They have excellent lemonade. They have excellent FROZEN lemonade. And, because it's Key West, they have really excellent FROZEN KEY LIMEADE! It's fantastic. I got two -- or for immediately, and one for the freezer for (a little bit) later. read more

Freshly squeezed lemonade for me in the door, but the homemade giant chocolate chip & pecan cookie with warm ice cream made us stay. The shop is located in the middle of a busy (even on a Wednesday) street, filled with shops and visitors. We paid to park a few blocks away. The four stars is for the 5-star price. That lemonade was small for $7 and the cookie and ice cream, while tasty was $17. I'd still consider visiting again for the key lime pie. read more

Stopped in for some ice cream & there weren't any other customers inside. Asked to try 2 samples & the girl behind the counter mumbled something under her breath, but eventually got samples for me. I have stumbled upon a Little piece of Heaven. As soon as you walk in the door, you can smell the most delicious sweet smell. There's an assortment of Homemade delicious treats they have delicious ice cream, fudge, and cookies. It was very hard to control myself. I ordered double chocolate ice cream on a waffle cone, which was delicious. I had a conversation with Jack who I thought was the owner, because he was so knowledgeable but he is the manager. Jack is absolutely so helpful and sweet. He suggested I try the chocolate covered macaroons. I took them back to my hotel and ate them the next day. These macaroons are the best thing I've ever eaten ever!!! I love them so much that I actually went back the next day to buy more and to say hello to Jack again. I wish I had more time in Key West. I would go back again. This was the most pleasant experience. I love this, place is so beautiful and They make the most delicious treats you also have to try the chocolate fudge it's amazing. My group of friends and I rode by this lovely establishment. Since I was leading the pack we all came to a sudden halt. I walked in and fell in love immediately with the LARGEST macadamia cookie. The best $$ I've spent on dessert. I don't remember the price. It was around $8 maybe. It was soft and crunchy the way cookies should always be. Each bite was just as sweet as the last. We visit the various Mattheessen's locations every time we're in town! Let me tell you -- these are probably the the absolute best cookies I've ever had anywhere, ever. Family members actually request Mattheessen's cookies as their Key West souvenirs when we come down! If you tell the employees that you'll be traveling and taking the cookies home, they wrap them up and package them for you so they won't break in transit. We were sitting on the second floor balcony of a restaurant across the street and I could see these giant cookies. That's how big the cookies were...I could see them from that far! Now you might be thinking, $6 is a lot for one cookie. These things are not only huge, but pretty tasty. We tried the peanut butter and a chocolate chip. My vote goes to the peanut butter one all the way. We also ended up coming back to try their key lime pie. Now mind you, this was my first key lime pie, but I really enjoyed it. That being said, I don't have anything to compare it to but I thought it was delicious. So why not a 5 star rating? At both locations I went to, the employees weren't particularly friendly.
