My wife and I bought tickets for an early lunch show, "Grunts & Grits", not knowing what to expect. It was excellent! Great setting, great people (Karl was our chef, Monica our server), great food. 4 courses - plantain chips with Cuban chimichurri, bollos (like hush puppies but much lighter), fish with grits and pico de gallo and key lime pie with meringue. Also had the best sangria we've ever had. ALL were excellent. You receive recipe cards for each course plus the sangria. Highly recommend. read more

We didn't stay for the show, but we did stop in for a slice of Key lime pie. The pie itself was very good. It had a nicely tart flavor and a tall meringue topping that was light and delicious. That part was excellent. Unfortunately, the graham cracker crust was disappointing. I'm not sure what their recipe is, but it could definitely benefit from more butter. It literally disintegrated when we cut into it. For me, the crust is just as important as the filling, so that detracted from the overall experience. There was a lot to like about this pie, and I'm not sure if the crust issue is typical. For me, it brought the experience down to a solid four stars, when it could easily have been five. P.S. There are other Key lime pie spots in town with excellent crusts, though they don't offer the same lofty meringue topping. read more

The Cooking Show is a wonderful place to eat great Key West and Caribbean influenced food, and learn at the same time! An appetizer, salad, main course, and dessert are forthcoming in this lesson put forth by world class chefs! The chimichurri was absolutely a knockout with the plantains! The avocado salad was smooth, cool and delicious! The Ropa Vieja was a great well spuced, shredded flank steak and rice dish which was new to me. I loved it! The flan was a great cap to it all! This was a wonderful experience, and you should definitely book this for an excursion on a cruise or, if you're in town, try a demonstration! They have their menus posted ahead of time, so you can take a look at what you'll be eating. We arrived on a cruise with Celebrity and were walked over a short distance to the location from the port. Before the demonstration began, we had time to order drinks at the bar and browse their gift shop. We got a couple of souvenirs before sitting down. Our menu for lunch was Sangria, Plantain Chips, Tostones with Chimichurri, Picadillo, Black Beans & Rice, and Tia's Flan. Everything simply tasted amazing! It was very interactive, and our host was fantastic throughout the whole show. I really liked the chimichurri. They even give you the recipe cards for all the dishes you ate. We were very full at the end, and there were leftovers that we couldn't take back with us on the ship :( If I ever am in Key West again, I will definitely book another show! read more

We didn't get a chance to attend the cooking school experience due to timing, but you can still visit anytime during opening hours for snacks, drinks, or Key Lime pie. We did the Key Lime pie. TWICE. It was THE BEST EVER! I was a little leery of the meringue (not a big fan of meringue), but it was suggested by a local as a must-try. So glad we did. Their meringue is unlike any meringue I've ever had or seen while on the island. It was creamy like whipping cream, not sweet, but it offset the tang of the pie perfectly. This is my vote for THE BEST KEY LIME PIE anywhere! read more

Two days after attending the cooking show we've retuned to attend a ceremony a cocktail show. We were the only two people in the class and Michael was our instructor. He made the class. He explained the history of rum in the Keys and world history. Very knowledgeable in the topic. We fixed two drinks in the class, he fixed us one. Whoa! Came here because we heard their Key Lime Pie was good....boy, were we wrong...it is GREAT!!! Delicious! The bar vibe is amazing and the seats in their grand hall is phenomenal! It was a wonderful experience. It's like food network but you get to eat the food! It was a culinary history lesson of Key West. Our Chefs Michael and Karl were so fun and interactive and so knowledgeable about the culture and influence of different foods into the area. Ali was our server and always available for anything we needed. Others had been earlier that week and brought their family back! The atmosphere is so cute and made you feel at home. The Key West Cooking School was amazing from top to bottom! We had the opportunity to try our hand at crispy plantains, conch fritters, mojo roast pork, black beans and rice, homemade sangria and key lime pie! Everything was delicious. Amy, the chef, was beyond awesome, sharing not only wonderful cooking tips about Key West, Spanish and Cuban cuisines but also so much about the history of the region. Her assistants were wonderful. Throughout the class, we were able to do some hands-on cooking, all while sipping away at our just-made sangria and nibbling on plantains with a delicious tangy Cuban Chimichurri. (If we were not departing that morning, we would gladly have stayed at the lovely adjacent bar!) The kitchen is also gorgeous with state-of-the-art appliances and is located in a super cool historic, beautifully renovated building. We walked away from the class with lots of tips and great recipes. But more than that, we came away feeling like we were part of Key West's magical laid-back happy island life for a short while. (However, this class would be great for locals, too!) Come hungry! You eat what you cook and the Key West Cooking School makes sure you walk away full of delicious island cuisine. I'm from Key West, and we decided to try the Key West cooking show. Not only was the entire event amazing, the bar was wonderful too. *they serve fresh juices!!!! *they also have a cute gift shop. From the entry, to the exit, it was a 10!!!!! AMAZING decor, and an "old fashioned" kitchen. They even allow you to take photos!! The menu changes often too. The food was so authentic too. We had an incredible experience doing the rum cocktail course! We learned a great deal about rum history and the way the Keys played a part and enjoyed mixing our own drinks and gaining some new drink recipes.
